2015 Newsletter Week 4 Term3 Community

Welcome to the third community newsletter of the year and our fourth newsletter for the term. As you can see from the cover we had our annual school cross country event yesterday. Thank you to all those who helped out and thank you to Barry Brown for allowing us to run across his land. This term in the afternoons, the year 5-8s have been working on finding solutions to local school issues. The issues students have been working on have been: Creative furniture solutions that improve our environment for learning Developing challenging physical playground equipment for the older students Improving the visibility and promotion of the school at the road side Improving our school website to make it a vibrant and informative place to visit. Having genuine issues to solve and being part of the decision making and change process at school has been good for the students. They have had to conduct research into existing solutions, think about budgets, materials. Check out some the student ideas in this newsletter. This year Kaihere School has been involved in working to- wards establishing a Community of Schools, with Hauraki Plains College, and schools such as Ngatea, Kerepehi, Waitakaruru and many other Plains schools. This community of schools is being considered under the Government’s some- what controversial Investing in Educational Success (IES) initiative. Our school, and those involved, are interested in providing the best learning opportunities for students in this district. This has given me an opportunity to meet with and share ideas with other school leaders and I have already had some fruitful and enlightening meetings with College staff. One of the questions that keeps cropping up is what constitutes really good learning in this modern age? There has been enormous focus on Numeracy and Literacy because of National Standards (possibly to the detriment of other learning areas). I believe that Numeracy and Literacy are crucial, but I also believe creativity, the ability to learn and explore through experiences, and the arts are also incredibly valuable. What do you think? As a community of parents, business people, employers, what do you think our young people should be learning to take districts such as Hauraki, the country and the world into the future? I am always keen to hear feedback, so parent or not, if you have an opinion drop me an e-mail or give me a call. Wrap-up for the last weeks of Winter and remember that Spring is just around the corner. S C H O O L A N D C O M M U N I T Y N O T I C E SPaeroa Lions Club 26th Annual Fireworks Display On Saturday 31 October 2015 our club will be holding its 26th Annual Fireworks Display at Paeroa Domain. For our 25th Annual Display in 2014 we increased the scale of the fireworks display and we have decided to maintain that standard with our suppliers to include some newdisplays. We aim to providea night of family fun with a great fireworks display at an affordable price.. Our gate charge remains at $15 for a family ticket which covers 2 adults and 2 children. We use the services of a longstanding Aucklandfireworks display provider and we also have food stalls and other entertainment on site. NOALCOHOL OR PERSONAL FIREWORKS areallowed on the grounds and this assists us inmaking this a very enjoyable night of family fun. This year our Display falls the same night as Halloween and we will advise in due course as to what we will be doing to encourage children to wear their Halloween outfits.

As further entertainment we are presently negoti-ating with a world class group to perform for your entertainment. This will not bring about anincrease in gate charge but if we are successful in obtaining this group the gates will probably open a little earlier. More details as they become available

If we are successful in having this group there will be no increase in the entry charge. . WRITING We have been looking at writing in the style of a newspaper report. Here are some excerpts fromstu-dent news articles. Cecil the Lion Palmer is an avid big game hunter who learnt how to hunt at the young age of fve and has been huntng ever since. This is not the frst tme he has been in trouble for his huntng. In 2008 he faced prison tme for lying to a federal agent about the killing of a black bear. He was also profled in the New York tmes afer he killed a trophy elk in California. Palmer's wife (Tonete) also has an interest in huntng and hasn't been seen since Palmer was accused of killing Cecil. Palmer himself has received considerable negatve response because of his actons.By Sarah Shark Atack Australian Mick Fanning, 3 tme world champion surf-er, was atacked by a shark in South Africa. Luckily for Fanning the rescue team got to him before he was hurt. When Fanning was atacked he was competng in a surf competton. The shark bit Fannings leg rope of his surfoard. The shark was trying to bite the surfoard, but Fanning desperately fought back. By Brooke READING We have a class of really keen readers. Here are some of the books we are loving in Mangawhero room at the moment: Paper Towns by John Green. Shontelle has read this and Molly is reading this. It was a good mature book. I liked it because it was funny and had some mysteries. Shontelle Nathan has been reading Driving a Bargain by Fleur Beale. I reckon this book has really great humour. It has a great storyline with good characters.. I am now reading Slide the Corner by the same au-thor Nathan. Damian has been reading another Fleur Beale book, My Life of Crime. A really interesting story that hooked me in. A good book and you should read it. The crime was good, but I wont spoil it for you Damian. Fergus is reading the Gone series by Michael Grant. A really interesting and surprising book. There are lots of exciting parts, right from the first page when all the adults disappear! Fergus Busy times in Mangawhero room (Years 6-8). Please enjoy reading about some of the many learning activities we have been engaged in.

Maths Besides focussing on division calculation strategies, using protractors and solving problems involving time and timetables, we have also managed to send a team to the Netherton School problem solv-ing challenge evening. It was a great night and we learnt a lot about pre-paring better for next year. Cultural Learning Last term was a busy term for cultural learning, with Matariki and a visit to Kerepehi marae as well as the school hangi night. This term in week 2 was Te wiki O te reo Maori (Maori language week). Students have learnt waiata (songs), games, been working on writing and saying their mihi.Heres Daniel with his Pou art, depicting elements of his her-itage and whakapapa Finding creative solutions We have been working through the Technologyprocess to solve some school-based issues and develop creative solutions: One group has been learning about website construc-tion so they can take charge of keeping the schools website fresh, relevant and up to date. If youve never visited our webpage you can find it at http://kaihereschool.weebly.com/ Another group has been looking at furniture concepts. Here is a great idea they want to build and trial in the class. Tube seat. What is required is a tractor inner-tube, strips of fab-ric, and a cushion. This is a great way to make cheap, comfortable classroomfurniture for reading.An-other great idea this team has discovered is that of guttering for book shelves. If any-one has some old (but good condi-tion) plastic guttering, could they please donate it to the school. Our other two groups have been working on theissue of signage and school presence at the roadside and the need for more chal-lenging physical playground equipment for the seniors. Both groups have come up with lots of ideas and intend to present then to the schools Board. Swinging net made fromrecycled tires
