PRESS RELEASE 2015 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination Results Released The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) will release the results of the 2015 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) tomorrow (15 July). A total of 74,131 candidates entered the 2015 HKDSE, representing a 7% decrease from last year. Among them, 61,136 are day school candidates while 11,932 are private candidates. There are 498 participating schools this year. Three categories of subjects are offered in the HKDSE: Category A Senior Secondary subjects, Category B Applied Learning subjects and Category C Other Language subjects. About 85% of school candidates registered for two to three elective subjects in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Liberal Studies. This year, a total of 41,527 day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. PRESS RELEASE 2015 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education

Examination Results Released

The Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) will release the

results of the 2015 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE)

tomorrow (15 July).

A total of 74,131 candidates entered the 2015 HKDSE, representing a 7% decrease

from last year. Among them, 61,136 are day school candidates while 11,932 are private

candidates. There are 498 participating schools this year.

Three categories of subjects are offered in the HKDSE: Category A Senior Secondary

subjects, Category B Applied Learning subjects and Category C Other Language

subjects. About 85% of school candidates registered for two to three elective subjects

in addition to the four core subjects, namely Chinese Language, English Language,

Mathematics and Liberal Studies.

This year, a total of 41,527 day school candidates obtained level 2 or above in five

subjects including Chinese Language and English Language. This represents 69.5% of

which is similar to last year’s figure. The percentages of candidates getting level 2 or

above and level 5 or above are 79.3% and 8.8% respectively.

In Mathematics Compulsory Part, 81.8% of day school candidates attained level 2 or

above, representing an increase of 1.8% from last year, while about 87.2% attained

level 2 or above in Liberal Studies. For both subjects, the percentage of day school

candidates achieving level 5 or above has increased by over 1% as compared to last

year.

Candidates who took Category B Applied Learning subjects achieved “Attained” or

above in 90.1% of the 3,966 subjects assessed and were awarded “Attained with

Distinction” in 20.7% of the subject entries.

A total of 316 candidates entered Category C Other Language subjects this year.

These subjects were examined using the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level question

papers from Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The results of the June 2015

series examinations will be released on 20 July while candidates who sat the

November 2014 series examinations had already received their results in February

2015.

There were more than 14,900 invigilator-sessions for the written papers and listening

tests held in 398 schools this year. Special examination arrangements were made for

1,746 candidates with special educational needs and a total of 133 special examination

centres were set up.

This year over 1 million scripts were marked onscreen in 11 assessment centres

throughout the territory. About 4,500 markers, 500 marking assistants and 1,000 oral

examiners were appointed to assess candidates’ performance.

Arrangements for the release of results on 15 July

School candidates should collect their results notices from respective schools and an

online results enquiry service is available to evening school candidates from 7:00am on

15 July.

Private candidates will be notified by post and they can also check their results online.

Those who do not receive their results notices by post should contact the HKEAA on

3628 8860 or visit our office located at 12/F, Southorn Centre, 130 Hennessy Road,

Wan Chai between 8:30am and 5:00pm on 16 July.

Service hours of the Public Examinations Information Centre (PEIC) and the enquiry

counter in our Wan Chai office will be extended to provide support for candidates and

schools.

Notes for Editors:

The general entrance requirements for sub-degree programmes are five subjects at

level 2 or above (including Chinese Language and English Language) in the HKDSE or

equivalent.

The general entrance requirements for undergraduate programmes of local universities

are level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language, and level 2 or above

in Mathematics Compulsory Part and Liberal Studies. Apart from the four core subjects,

institutions may also set other admission requirements.

All statistics provided in this press release and the accompanying annexes are

provisional and subject to amendment after rechecking and remarking.

若選修乙類學科並取得「達標並表現優異」成績,會被視為甲類學科的第 3 級成績,取得「達標」成績,會被視為甲類學科的第 2 級

成績,以符合副學位課程入學及有關公務員職位入職的成績要求。數學必修部分及延伸部分會被視為同一個科目組合。若考生同時應

考兩個部分,則選擇其中成績較好的一個。 ‘Attained with Distinction’ in Category B subjects is deemed comparable to level 3 in Category A subjects and ‘Attained’ in Category B subjects is accepted as level 2 in Category A subjects for admission to sub-degree programmes and relevant civil service appointment. The ‘overlapping voices’ incident during the broadcast of

Chinese Language Paper 3 Listening Test

Background The 2015 HKDSE Chinese Language Paper 3 Listening Test was held on 31 March 2015. The duration of the test is 45 minutes and the full mark of the paper is 76 marks, accounting for 10% of the total subject marks. A total of 280 examination centres were set up for the Chinese Language Listening Test, among which 237 adopted radio broadcast while 43 used the infra-red transmission system (IR). After the examination, the HKEAA received reports from 35 centres indicating that ‘overlapping voices’ were heard during the broadcast. A total of 2,501 candidates also reported to the HKEAA that ‘overlapping voices’ were heard during the test and their performance was affected by the incident. Investigation of the Incident Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) investigated into the cause of the incident. According to the information provided by RTHK, intermittent ‘overlapping voices’ occurred in the first 23 minutes of the test. The duration of each of the ‘overlapping voices’ was between 0.5 and 2 seconds, and the total duration was around 2 minutes. RTHK confirmed that the master recordings provided by the HKEAA were error free. The ‘overlapping voices’ were caused by a technical issue during the live broadcast. About 13 minutes of examination materials were broadcast with intermittent ‘overlapping voices’, involving 16 questions. The rest of the time (about 10 minutes) included instructions to candidates and the time for candidates to study the questions and to tidy up their answers. The ‘overlapping voices’ were at a very low volume so the examination content could still be heard clearly. However, some candidates might have been affected by the ‘overlapping voices’, depending on the volume of their radio and their aural acuity.

Candidates taking the listening test at IR centres were not affected by the ‘overlapping voices’. Assessing the Impact on Candidates’ Performance To ensure that all candidates were assessed in a fair and equitable manner, the Standing Committee considered the investigation results of RTHK, the centre reports, and the information provided by the candidates. Moreover, the HKEAA also conducted various statistical analyses to assess the impact of the incident on the performance of the candidates. In order to analyse and compare the performance of candidates in different examination centres, we divided them into four groups as follows:

The results of the statistical analyses indicate that, as compared to Group 1, the performance of Group 4 has been slightly affected by the incident, while there is nothing unusual about the performance of Group 2 and Group 3.

Recommendations of the Standing Committee After due consideration of all the relevant information and data, the Standing Committee recommended that a proportional mark adjustment be made to the relevant paper mark of the 2,470 candidates in Group 4 who have been affected based on their marks in Paper 3, while no mark adjustment will be offered to 31 candidates who failed to substantiate their claims. Decision of the Public Examinations Board At its meeting on 8 July 2015 the Public Examinations Board approved the recommendations of the Standing Committee to adjust the marks of the candidates who were affected by the incident. The candidates concerned will be notified before the release of the examination results on 15 July 2015.
