On behalf of the City of Vancouver, i want to welcome everyone to the 19th annual eastside Culture Crawl.We are fortunate to have a strong and creative arts community here in Vancouver. i am proud of the many celebrations of art and culture that occur during the year and across the City. the eastside Culture Crawl is certainly one of Vancouver’s cultural treasures. there are many talented artists boasting a variety of art mediums in the eastside neighbourhood who are eager to share their talents with cultural crawlers year after year. it is the unique character of our city that allows us to be able to appreciate and participate in a celebration of the arts such as the eastside Culture Crawl.i want to thank the organizers of the Culture Crawl, the artists who are willing to showcase their talents, and everyone who makes this event such a success. i am sure everyone participating will enjoy another wonderful weekend!Yours truly,

the Crawl, Vancouver’s largest visual arts, crafts and design festival has become a ‘must do’ event for thousands. this is where art happens! Located in the geographic heart of the city, the Crawl provides you with an exciting opportunity to discover art. this year we are welcoming several new buildings including acme studios and the arts Factory, along with 80+ new artists. We are fortunate to have a great team working with us who help make the festival run smoothly.Behind the scenes, the Crawl is advocating for affordable, safe and secure studio spaces. the society is part of the Flats advisory Committee, providing us with an opportunity to contribute our thoughts and vision for a strong and vibrant arts community. Moving Art 2015 this year’s 2nd annual eastside Culture Crawl Film and Video Projection, Do You Remember?, is a nineteen-minute montage by six filmmakers who take us to many places—alert Bay, storm Bay, a deep pool, a child’s tale, a dedication to Robert Bresson and a memory machine. though these pieces are varied in style and move from meditative to thought provoking, they are connected with elements of memory, time and place. the screening begins with Floathouse by Jenny Hawkinson, a moving house on the alert Bay waterfront, followed by sean Karemaker’s drawn story Never Grow Old and then the evocative Pool by Clayton Holmes. the fourth film is In Memory of Mouchette by antony Rolland. Will stacey’s time-lapsed Storm Bay Reflections is the fifth and the montage concludes with Ben Z Cooper’s Do You Remember?. northeastdiscover studios that hug the railroad tracks along Powell street. at Portside Studios, meet a dozen accomplished painters and installation artists interpreting local and distant landscapes, exploring the figure, and experimenting with form and colour. at the corner of Powell and Commercial drive, visit The ARC, one of the few purpose-built artist live-work buildings in the city. Here, you’ll find 15 studios filled with everything from furniture, leather work and jewellery, to surreal sculptures made from found objects, intricately patterned drawings and paintings, to film props and puppets. Be inspired by abstract painting at studios in the newly renovated Hamilton Bank Building on Powell at Victoria drive. then head to Vancouver Community Laboratory where you’ll encounter nearly a dozen artists creating sculptures, furniture and installations out of glass, metal and wood. don’t miss the wooden eyeglass frames!

northwestthis area features some of the oldest architecture in the city. Near the corner of alexander street and Railway are studios in former industrial factories and warehouses. at Railtown Studios, open the doors to drawings, paintings and photography. as you walk east along Railway, visit artists working in assemblage, painting, mixed-media collage, photography and print-making. Nearby, check out Octopus Studios near Oppenheimer Park. the 20 artists here work in a wide range of media, from jewellery made from unconventional materials, to tiny ceramics, surreal drawings and sculpture, paintings and humorous dog photography. Further east is Razstone Studios and MakerLabs.New this year: we’ve extended the Crawl’s western boundary to Columbia street to capture more great art studios in Chinatown. en-route to Acme Studios on Hastings street, stop in at Hungry Thumbs on Main to explore the work of painters, ceramic artists, sculptors and portrait artists. then head one block south to Studio 126 on east Pender street to take in furniture made from reclaimed coastal wood, as well as printmaking and sculpture.

installationThe Receiving Linethe Receiving Line is the term used at the wedding reception for the bride and groom to greet each guest with open arms, hugs or handshakes. Sherry Cooper’s paper torsos have gestural arms and each one emotes differently as reflective of their personality. Her wild and gay images were created on her Galaxy s Note, and are intended to upstage the bride’s dress of white lace, tulle and satin. south endthe industrial area south of terminal avenue is home to a new art hub. The Arts Factory features painters and other 2- and 3-dimensional artists who draw inspiration from street art, music, nature, and found materials. a few minutes’ drive or bike east along terminal avenue leads to The Old Foundry where seven artists push the boundaries of metal, ceramics and stone, as well as painting and photography. Next, head north to William Clark Studios with over 25 artists at work creating felt sculptures mimicing nature, intricate tapestries of neighbourhood scenes, hand-woven fabrics, and vibrant paintings capturing everything from street graffiti to gardens to abstract reflections of natural systems. this is also home to the Vancouver sculpture studio: figurative and abstract work in terra cotta, marble and bronze. When you’re ready for a break, Strange Fellows Brewing is hosting a beer garden for Crawl weekend, offering locally-made craft beer. it is also the location of sherry Cooper’s installation piece (see right) and the Crawl’s Moving Art Video and Film Projections (see page 5).

strathconaVancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, strathcona’s tree-lined streets feature meticulously restored character homes. Many studios here are inside artists’ homes, giving you a glimpse into the hum of creativity that usually happens behind closed doors. there are 20+ studios in this neighbourhood all within easy walking distance of each other.Walking between studios, keep an eye on the ground for mosaics that tell the stories of people who’ve shaped the neighbourhood. Pick up a snack or coffee at one of the area’s many corner stores and cafes, including the Union Market and the Wilder Snail. Be sure not to miss the studios north of east Hastings street, as well as the eclectic outdoor murals (supported by the strathcona Business improvement association) along Glen drive and Franklin street. across the tracks, experience the inventiveness of Propellor, the Yew Woodshop and founding Crawl building The Onion. a stone’s throw away, catch a bite to eat from a food truck before plunging into the Mergatroid and Parker Street studios.

Many eastside schools are designated as inner-city and have little exposure to the visual arts and art-making. studio 101 brings school children into artist studios for free workshops with professional artists. For many participants, it is their first time connecting with professional artists and arts experiences. the program fosters an understanding of the artistic and creative process, while promoting their creative confidence and an appreciation of the visual arts. students from Britannia elementary from grades 5–7 will visit artist studios to create sculptures, paintings, animation, and mixed media items.the eastside Culture Crawl society (eccs) provides the school with funds for students to purchase a piece of artwork. students are introduced to the adjudication process, and give particular consideration to the diversity of artistic practice. the selected work is exhibited at the school and becomes part of the school’s art collection.studio 101 was conceived in 2007 by Crawl artists Mira Malatestinic, Richard tetrault and Kathryn Youngs. it is proudly supported by the eccs and Opus art supplies.

the eastside culture crawl officially began in 1997 with 45 visual artists in three strathcona-area studio buildings: 1000

Parker, Paneficio studios and the Glass Onion. Our attendance then was only a few hundred people.the Crawl has now grown to include over 400 artists and more than 70 venues. Participants include visual artists, craftspeople and designers, and the event attracts an audience of more than 25,000.the organization itself has evolved into a cultural event that is richly experiential, providing visitors with an in-depth glimpse into the heart of the east Van creative community.Our mandate:• Toeducateandincreasethepublic’s

the joy of building an art collection can start at any time, even with the smallest budget. seeing lots of artwork and getting to know the artist helps you to make a decision when the time comes to begin your collection. But what is the ‘right work’ and ‘right time’ is, of course, very personal. the Culture Crawl is your opportunity to see where art is made and meet the artists. talk with friends, research the artists that interest you, and probe into what inspires your favorite artist’s creative process. Remember that most artists are open to showing their work even after the Crawl is over, so do leave your number and pick up a business card.Buy what you like. simple advice, and true! trust your instinct and fill your collection with pieces you love. Stick with original art. Original artworks are unique, one-of-a-kind, and should carry the artist’s signature somewhere on the work itself.Know the difference between an original work and a reproduction. Reproductions are mass-produced copies of original artwork and dilute the impact of the original work. Most of what you will see at the Crawl is original, not mass-produced. How are art prices set? One of the most important factors is demand. the size and medium of the piece, as well as how well known the artist is, are other factors.

Love, Passion & Investment: A Photography Primer Whether for love for a particular image, a passion for the medium, or wise investment, there are a number of criteria that should inform your selection of a photograph. Contemporary photography can be divided in three broad categories: colour, black and white (b&w) and photo-based. they include traditional/analog, alternative process and digital. 1. Artists: does the artist exhibit regularly; how

have critics responded? is s/he engaged with contemporary art/photographic practices? do they have gallery representation?

2. Medium: What medium is the work printed on, and with which process? Critically, is it stable? is it signed? While photographs aren’t fragile, they are works on paper and sensitive to uv damage, fading, curling, etc.

traditional methods: Both b&w and colour prints should have clear highlights and a clean border. Yellowing or staining indicates contamination and guarantees the print will degrade over time.

▶ archivally-processed b&w images (1874–) were considered the most stable of photographic media until the advent of digital printing.

▶ Most images are printed on silver gelatin paper, either fibre-based or resin-coated. a light-sensitive coating is applied to a neutral, acid-free paper base in the former; in the latter, it’s sandwiched between layers of polyethylene. in general, avoid anything with poly in the list of ingredients. Prints can be further stabilized/enhanced via toning; selenium or sepia is generally used.

▶ Chromogenic or C-print (1942–), a colour-negative process, is dye-based and works prior to the mid-1990s are notoriously unstable. think of that lovely, faded image hanging on a south wall.

▶ ilfochrome (1960s–2012), a direct positive medium formerly known as Cibachrome, is considered archival. although dye-based, collectors report stability in normal light. C-prints and Cibachromes as well as most other colour processes have been replaced by digital output.

digital media: digital image-making indelibly altered the production and presentation of photographic images. the historically brief lifespan of colour prints has been extended by nearly a century. each print should include the date, and information on printer, inks and medium used; i.e., epson 4800; Ultrachrome inks; Moab Rag entrada Natural, 300 gms.editions: digital printing reset the standard for archival stability; however, the ease with which images are now produced places the question of edition front and centre. as with most things, scarcity determines value.

▶ is the image one of a numbered edition and, if so, how many prints were issued? Were any purchased by important institutions and/or collectors? is there a secondary edition— a smaller version of the same image, and run of 1000?

presentation: Large prints are often face-mounted; a print or transparency is adhered to the rear surface of a sheet of plexi-glass. there is some uncertainty about the long-term stability of this technique.

▶ traditional framing protects work from atmospheric damage and dust. Mat and backing should be cut from acid-free, rag board. uv-resistant den Glass, while costly, provides additional protection.

How much does it cost? there is no admission charge for the Culture Crawl.Where can I park? street parking is available around the eastside. avoid parking near Parker street studios as the area can be quite congested. Consider taking transit, walking, or riding your bike instead! Many buildings are within easy walking distance from each other, and Modo will have a shuttle on saturday and sunday to help you get around the Crawl. Where can I eat and drink? Check the map (pages 18–19) to find the locations of our food vendor sponsors: Fujiya, Union Food Market, and the Wilder snail. Food trucks are in the parking lot of Parker street studios, and strange Fellows Brewing is hosting the Crawl’s beer garden. Do you have an ATM? No, but most artists and food vendors have some form of credit or debit machine. What should I bring? Comfortable shoes, water, and an umbrella. don’t be deterred by a little rain!Can I take photos? Please respect the artists and ask before taking photographs in any studio. Can I bring my kids?
