I'm excited to see familiar faces at our upcoming general meeting, and to meet all of the new people as well! I've gotten quite a number of emails from new members and potential members in the area, and so I'm hoping to see some new faces mixed in with our crew. At our first general meeting of the year, we will hand out the Eastside yearbook, so please come! Inside is detailed information, deadlines, and contact info for the whole year. We will go over everything that is coming up this year. There will be announcements about concerts, competitions, and cake! Make sure that Monday, September 24 th is on your calendar. We'll start at 9:30, and we've got a lot to get through that day. Included is our annual fall luncheon. I want to encourage you to show up on time at our meeting. Due to conflicts last May, our Ida Zelikovsky Green Award hasn't yet been awarded to the winner from last spring's scholarship competition. Megan Tan will be opening our meeting at 9:30, and she needs to start promptly in order to get back to school. Please be respectful of the performance and show up in time to hear her play. Are you familiar with the WSMTA Hall of Fame? Our very own Donald Deneger was inducted at the WSMTA/OMTA state conference this last June. However, we'll be presenting him the award and honoring him in person at our September meeting (hence the cake). I know many of you have worked with him over the years, and I'm hoping you can drop by and make the presentation even more special with your presence. Of course, we'll have our usual catered fall luncheon at the end of the meeting with plenty of time for you to all catch up with friends, both old and new! September 2018 Vol. 45 No.1

    Message from the President

Welcome to another year of EMTA events,

everyone! I'm excited to see familiar faces at

our upcoming general meeting, and to meet all

of the new people as well! I've gotten quite a

number of emails from new members and

potential members in the area, and so I'm hoping

to see some new faces mixed in with our crew.

At our first general meeting of the year, we will

hand out the Eastside yearbook, so please come!

Inside is detailed information, deadlines, and

contact info for the whole year. We will go over

everything that is coming up this year. There

    will be announcements about concerts,

competitions, and cake! Make sure that Monday,

September 24th is on your calendar. We'll start at

9:30, and we've got a lot to get through that day.

Included is our annual fall luncheon.

I want to encourage you to show up on time at

our meeting. Due to conflicts last May, our Ida

Zelikovsky Green Award hasn't yet been

awarded to the winner from last spring's scholarship competition. Megan Tan will be

opening our meeting at 9:30, and she needs to

start promptly in order to get back to school.

Please be respectful of the performance and

show up in time to hear her play.

Are you familiar with the WSMTA Hall of

Fame? Our very own Donald Deneger was

    inducted at the WSMTA/OMTA state

conference this last June. However, we'll be

presenting him the award and honoring him in

person at our September meeting (hence the

cake). I know many of you have worked with

him over the years, and I'm hoping you can drop

by and make the presentation even more special

    with your presence.

Of course, we'll have our usual catered fall

luncheon at the end of the meeting with plenty

of time for you to all catch up with friends, both

    old and new!

Once you get the yearbook at our first fall

meeting, you'll have a list of all of our events,

but I wanted to highlight a few of them right

away so you could put them on your calendars:

Monday, October 8th is our first Workshop with

Gilbert De Greeve at Newport Covenant

Church, 10-12:30. Free to members, but make

sure to sign up with Donna Sams!

Saturday Oct 13th is our District I and II

conference up in Marysville, running 9-4 that

day. See WSMTA.org for more info

For all of our new members, know that our meetings are always the fourth Monday of the

month at Newport Covenant Church. Looking

forward to a new and exciting year ahead of us!

    Church

    EASTSIDE WORKSHOP

    SERIES 2018 – 2019:

    WORKSHOP 1

    PRESENTER:

Professor Gilbert De Greeve (from Belgium)

    DATE: MONDAY, OCTOBER 8

    from 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

    TOPIC:

“Everything we need to know for the best interpretation is IN the

score” The aim of the topic is to illustrate how much a thorough analysis of the score can help for a better and more authentic understanding of the music, hence of the interpretation of a piece. The analysis I am referring to does not only concern the form and style but also the harmonic and historical elements connected to a piece and even highlights particular challenges on the instrument. Professor De Greeve does this talk with concrete examples on the piano and will have handouts.

We will be given guidelines and insight into interpreting a score and better learn how much liberty the performer can take.

It is important to sign up with Donna Sams at

the meeting on September 24 or email her at

[email protected] if you plan to attend.

We need to know how many will attend so that

    there are enough handouts.

All EMTA workshops for 2028-2019 are free of charge to EMTA members though the Dorothy Woodcock grant.

    Non EMTA members: $25

Biography – Gilbert De Greeve studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Antwerp (Belgium) and graduated with degrees in both Performance and Composition. He went to study in the USA with a.o. In the same year he was appointed Professor at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Antwerp. His artistic activities bring him all over the globe for more than 40 years already, with numerous concerts, recordings, lectures, master classes in piano, chamber music, Lied accompaniment and composition. As soloist, in chamber music or as accompanist, he is known for his striking interpretations, and choral works. At present he is Director Emeritus of the State Music Academy of Antwerp and Professor Emeritus of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Antwerp. Extra Notes

    Church Organist / Pianist

    Wanted

    Redeemer Lutheran Church, located on

Mercer Island, is a small congregation with a

    friendly, family quality.

The Position: We’re looking for a person with

experience playing both organ and piano in a

church setting. The compensation is $140 per

worship service. The number of services will

naturally vary from month to month, but will be

no fewer than four. Holy Days on the church

calendar that do not fall on a Sunday but on

which Redeemer has a church service are

    Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday,

Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. In

addition, accompanying a very small choir and

leading it as director is also needed, but is

    negotiable. Part-time, seasonal choir

    accompanying/directing will be paid

additionally per rehearsal, at $26 per occurrence

and is based on taking place before or after the

    service.

The Redeemer organist also retains the right of

first refusal for playing at member funerals and

    weddings.

    Requirements: Previous experience playing

hymns and liturgical musical sections to lead the

congregation in song, and accompanying a

choir. Congregational singing is typically done

from our Lutheran church hymnals and sources,

but other sources may be appropriate.

Additional experience in choir direction is also

    desirable.

    Responsibilities:

    1. To select appropriate Prelude, Offertory, and Postlude music every week or on chosen days of congregational worship (as per above), on organ and/or piano.

    2. Follow the service order and any liturgy outlined for the day, including the hymns chosen by the pastor.

    3. Notify the church secretary after music is chosen to print in the bulletin for service. Note title, composer and/or arranger.

    4. Choose choir music as appropriate.

The Location: Redeemer is located near the

south end of the main north/south arterial on

Mercer Island, at 6001 Island Crest Way.

The Instruments: Redeemer has an organ and

a piano. The organ is an approximately seven-

year old Allen digital organ, “Protégé”, two

manual. The piano is a Yamaha baby grand in

excellent condition. It is tuned yearly and as

    needed.

If interested in more information about this

position, please leave a message for Church

    Administrator Gayne Phillips and/or Pastor
