TOGETHER ON THE WATER

HOW IT ALL STARTEDBorn on the island of Oahu and located in Bend, Oregon for over 20 years, KIALOA grew out of our love for the sport of outrigger racing. Driven by the need for performance equipment and the desire to build the best paddles in the world, my husband Dave began blending Hawaiian craftsmanship with modern technology, and the result was a line of beautiful, handcrafted wooden outrigger paddles. As the demand for lighter equipment arose, Dave responded by developing the first Hybrid Canoe Paddle for the outrigger community.

ENTER DRAGON BOATINGIn 2002 I had the privilege of racing dragon boats on the Yangtze River in the Three Gorges region - just before the world’s largest hydroelectric power station went into operation. An unforgettable experience, I came back from that trip excited about the sport and culture of dragon boat paddling, feeling the same sense of community I got from racing with my outrigger crew. So I asked Dave to build me a dragon boat paddle.Fast forward to the present and you see that we’ve applied our 24 years of paddle building experience, our complete attention to detail, and our obsession with quality materials and construction, to produce a full line of dragon paddles and accessories.

SHARING THE EXPERIENCEWhile the heritage of KIALOA is racing, we understand that paddling is really about people. Whether your goal is to win a race, enjoy time with friends, or to find solitude on the water, the true essence of paddling is the experience, and the relationships that are born out of that shared experience. When you use a KIALOA paddle, we are there with you. Together on the water.

THE ERGO-T™

We have logged a lot of paddling miles after 25 years. We understand how invaluable it is to have a comfortable ergonomic grip for your top hand. Though the Ergo-T™ was designed many years ago, it is tried and true. The front of the T is straight with a rounded edge so that your fingers can wrap comfortably around the handle, while the back is elliptical with a rounded edge that fits into the palm of your hand.

“ The KIALOA paddle felt right the very first time I put it in the water. It felt like an extension of me and I felt graceful. I really like the way the curve of the handle fits in my palm and I like the comfort of the oval shaft.” – Margie Kron, BSC Paddler

THE DIFFERENCE IS IN THE DETAILS

QUALITY CONSTRUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY We are committed to quality construction. We build all of our products with our core value of Excellence (Po’okela) being top of mind. Our paddles are durable, long lasting, and have a bomber connection between the blade and the shaft. All paddles are assembled at our shop in Bend, Oregon with multiple quality control steps in place.Producing products leads to waste. There’s no way around it. One of the ways we reduce waste is by making products that last and retain value, thereby minimizing landfill contributions. This practice reflects our core value of Stewardship (Malama) – caring for people and our environment.

BLADE DESIGNA set of very tight specs on blade design keeps us on our toes in efforts to be innovative, but we did it. We developed our carbon blade for optimal catch and adhesion. When we put paddles in the hands of life long competitors we got some great feedback.

“ When I first demoed the Hybrid, something felt different. The blade was sticking and really holding water at the catch. When I pulled, I could feel the paddle grab the water without slipping. I was impressed. When I compared the blade of the Kialoa to other dragon boat paddles, I could see that it was really designed to do just this, stick. In dragon boating, the paddle time in the water is so short, you have to make all your water time count.” – David Gallant

LeverLock® Adjustable Technology For 2015 we are applying our LeverLock® technology to the dragon boat line and offer the best adjustment mechanism on the market. You can adjust your paddle with the simple flick of a lever. There are no external mechanisms on the shaft and there are no tools needed to make the adjustment. (See page 5 for more details)
