A story set in the past, but relevant todayTold as a memory of the summer of 1935, the years are bridged by the presence of an adult Scout, a narrator who quotes indelible passages from Lee’s novel. The moral center of the piece is Atticus Finch (Dan Workman), the widowed lawyer who defends a doomed, innocent black man, Tom (Manning Goldman), who is accused of raping white-trash teenager Mayella (Claire Avery), whose wounds may well have been inflicted by her own hideous father Bob Ewell (Jacob J. Roman).

Every word Atticus utters has been filtered through the rose-colored memory of an adoring daughter. He’s a man whose stature has grown larger than life in the years since his 10-year-old girl has grown into a 50-year-old woman.

Atticus is a great man for his principles. He’s a great father because he looks his children in the eye, and he answers every question they pose to him with blunt forthrightness. But Atticus has a moral journey to take of his own, and it culminates with the epiphany that there are times when the kindest thing an honest parent can do for his children is not to tell them the truth.

As we reflect on race relations in our country, both historical and present day, Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird encourages us as people to be better and do better.

I remember reading To Kill a Mockingbird in junior high in the mid 1980s. I knew it was one of the great American stories because I was told that it was so, but I didn’t fully appreciate its artistry and importance at the time. To be able to come back to this story over 25 years later, with the benefit of age and wisdom, is a true gift. Harper Lee’s stirring account of a child’s coming of age, southern life in a small town during the Great Depression, and the lingering stench of bigotry and racism resonate today more than ever.

When the novel was first published in 1960, it was a New York Times bestseller for more than eighty weeks. It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961, and the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck as Atticus won three Academy Awards. It has been translated into dozens of languages, been read by tens of millions of people, and is still required reading in many schools around the world.

While set in 1935, the book is very much a reflection of the era in which it was written. In 1961, the nation was struggling over civil rights and Lee’s message, told in particular through the narratives of Scout and Atticus Finch, was deeply rational and impactful. In fact, a national Survey of Lifetime Reading Habits conducted by the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Library of Congress in 1991 speaks to the book’s lasting impact in finding that only the Bible had a larger impact on people’s lives than To Kill a Mockingbird.

2015 isn’t 1961 or 1935, yet one only needs to look at recent events like those in Ferguson, Missouri or the University of Oklahoma to know that the issues of racism, acceptance, and equality are still as resonant, and sadly at times unresolved, as they were when Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird.

Our job as theatre artists is not to preach or judge, but to raise questions and seek out answers, and in so doing we invite the audience to engage in the story in such a way that they leave the theatre feeling compelled and empowered to search for these truths on their own. Through Scout and Atticus, we look back in time, and through them we see our present and future as well.

One of the most charming musicals of all time featuring music by the team who wrote Fiddler on the Roof

She Loves Me is the third adaptation of the play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo, following the 1940 James Stewart – Margaret Sullivan film The Shop Around the Corner and the 1949 Judy Garland – Van Johnson musical version In the Good Old Summertime. It would surface yet again in 1998 as the Tom Hanks – Meg Ryan feature, You’ve Got Mail.

The plot revolves around Budapest shop employees Georg Nowack and Amalia Balash who, despite being consistently at odds with each other at work, are unaware that each is the other’s secret pen pal met through lonely-hearts ads. This award-winning musical premiered on Broadway in 1963, and subsequently had productions in the West End in 1964 and award-winning revivals on each side of the Atlantic in the 1990’s.

She Loves Me is a charming jewel-box of a musical. From Bock and Harnick’s delicious score, to Joe Masteroff’s book, this well-crafted show speaks to audiences that long for an intimate character-driven show. Magically, She Loves Me spins through the seasons while the employees of Maracezk’s Parfumerie live believing life should be “warm and full and rich in love and art.” This delightfully scented case of mistaken identity and letter writing transports us to Budapest, Hungary in the 1930’s. The “Golden Age of Budapest” is a time of Lonely Hearts Clubs, correspondence, stomach pills, picnics, perfume, and hats.

She Loves Me welcomes “home” all BHP Alumni to celebrate the friendships made and sustained on this hallowed ground, this theatre, this creative domicile for thespians. Dr. Lee’s dream of “ending the day with a play” is 70 years young; and we know that Doc would agree that life should be “warm and full and rich in love and art.”

One of the first BHP Alumni that transformed the CCC camp into the BHP Theatre was Robert Neff Williams. As I write these notes, the theatre world reverberates from his recent death. Neff was a man of the theatre. This South Dakota native graced, inspired, and challenged actors and theatres alike. From the BHP to Broadway, Regional and NY Theatres, Julliard, Columbia, London. . .the list goes on and on. Neff was a powerful master of voice and speech who set the standard for teaching excellence. His methods, techniques, and insights trained the best theatre and film actors of today. (Boyd Gaines, Georg in the 30th Anniversary production of She Loves Me was a student; so was Robin Williams.) In 1978-80 we worked together at the BHP. My life was changed! I moved to NY to study theatre speech with Neff, and went back again for Neff’s course on Restoration Comedy. Beyond studies, Neff was my dear friend. He shared with me the best New York had to offer in theatre, dance, orchestra, and opera. She Loves Me is dedicated to his work, his life. My heart gifts this production to my dear friend, Neff who lived Amalia’s dream: that life should be “warm and full and rich in love and art.”

Welcome to Shrek the Musical at the Black Hills Playhouse! This musical began as an animated movie in 2001 and then as the hit Broadway musical in 2008. As the production team began to make plans to create our production, it was important for all involved to create a world that would embrace the beloved movie and musical, while creating something that was unique for the BHP. In theatre it can be so easy to copy what has been done before. As artists, it is important to stretch our creative muscles and see how creative we can get, while still honoring the original story. Because of this, it was important for us to create as realistic of an animated world as we could. We hope you will dive with us into the swamp with Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona, and we hope you’re dancing with Lord Farquaad in Duloc.

Not only did we want to create a world that you could jump into and fully join us in our journey, but we wanted the beautiful meaning of this tale to ring true. This musical is not about a princess marrying a prince; it’s not about the ugliness of an ogre. This musical is about being who you are and celebrating that - and everyone else’s uniqueness as well. Yes, there will be adventure! Yes, there will be dancing! Yes, there will be an unbelievable ogre! But most importantly, we get to take this journey together and celebrate who we are.

Let’s go back to Hollywood and the studio system of the late 30’s

In a nod to the 75th Anniversary of the film Gone With the Wind, we present a rollicking comedy about how it got to the screen. If the story that inspired this play hadn’t actually happened, the premise would seem preposterous. 1939 Hollywood is abuzz. Legendary producer David O. Selznick has shut down production of his new epic, Gone with the Wind, a film adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel. The screenplay, you see, just doesn’t work. So what’s an all-powerful movie mogul to do?

The true story: George Cukor was fired by David O. Selznick (rumor said because Cukor was a homosexual and Selznick believed he would not be able to direct the love scenes.) When Victor Fleming came on board, he rejected the script. Production was shut down for 17 days while it was rewritten by Ben Hecht. Hecht was not allowed to read the original novel; instead, Selznick and Fleming would often play out parts from the book, to which Hecht had to write dialogue. Hecht was reportedly commanded by Selznick to write almost continuously for days without breaks. Hecht used Sidney Howard’s original script as the basis for his rewrite, but only got to rewrite the first half, which many consider to be superior to the second half. Ironically, Hecht did not receive official credit for his writing, with Howard listed as the movie’s only screenwriter.

If you love the arts and entertainment, it’s hard to resist the appeal of a backstage story. When the story involves the making of the most popular movie of all time, it may be impossible not to enjoy the tale.

The title of the play refers to the romanticization of the pre-civil war south. Supposedly the writers of the film version of Gone With The Wind created the phrase. In the film, when Scarlett O’Hara wears a dress made of green velvet drapes to Atlanta to try and get money from Rhett Butler to pay taxes on her home, Tara, she smiles sweetly and claims to have everything she could hope for and “not a care in the world.” Rhett, noticing her hands, calloused from picking cotton, knows she is lying: “You can drop the moonlight and magnolias, Scarlett!”

Selznick paid $50,000 for the movie rights to Gone With the Wind, a record sum at that time. The pressure on Selznick was profound. Movie fans demanded Clark Gable play Rhett Butler. Although every actress in Hollywood wanted the coveted role of Scarlett O’Hara, after nearly three years of auditioning, the role was uncast. Legend has it, Selznick’s brother brought English actors Laurence Olivier and Vivian Leigh to the studio one evening to watch Selznick set fire to the studio’s excess scenery. Selznick’s crew filmed the event for use as footage for the burning of Atlanta in the movie. As the giant gates from King Kong blazed, David took one look at Vivien Leigh in the reflection of the dancing flames, and knew he had found his Scarlett.

That’s just one of the legends of the making of a film classic.

Some of the human toll, though, in all its mad glory, is brought to you in Moonlight and Magnolias.

During the year, Kristy is a middle school language arts teacher in Greeley, Colorado.

Richard Scott Breen, Danville, VA, is delighted to be returning to the Black Hills Playhouse and celebrating this

special anniversary season. Richard earned a B.A. from Averett University and an M.F.A. from Western Illinois University. After 15 years of regional theatre, national tours, and commercials, he returned to Averett where he has shared his passion for theatre as a professor for the past 19 years. Nicholas Breen is excited about his first appearance with the Black Hills Playhouse. Nick is in the sixth grade at Sacred Heart School in Danville, VA, where he has been a member of the drama club, the soccer team, and

basketball team. His acting credits include an orphan in Oliver, a puppy in 101 Dalmatians, and Bert in All My Sons. Nick is planning a career as a professional soccer player and as a caretaker at an animal refuge.

Peyton is a junior B.F.A. costume design major at Pennsylvania State University. She was the first hand for Penn State Centre Stage’s Dogfight and Spring Awakening, as well as

a stitcher for Guys and Dolls, and wardrobe crew for Into the Woods and Julius Caesar. Peyton did hair and makeup for Penn State’s Biennial Halloween attraction, Dead State, and assisted Love and Light Productions in hair and makeup for The Rocky Horror Show.

CHRISTOPHER GEORGE HAUGTechnical Director

Chris recently received his M.F.A. in production design from Michigan State University. His research includes automated workflow for

technical directors, and mobile device integration for live performance. Besides technical direction and lighting design, Chris also works as a media designer for theatre, experimenting with projectors and other video devices. Chris is excited to continue his work as technical director for Albion College in MI this August. He is happy to be back at the BHP for a second season with his fiance Amber Marisa Cook.

Jenna is a 2015 graduate of Augustana College with majors in theatre and history. For Augustana College she stage managed A Doll’s

House, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, South Pacific, and Viking Varieties 2012 and was scenic charge artist for two seasons. Jenna also directed an original student work, Catalyst, for Augustana student theatre. In the last year, Jenna assistant stage managed RENT as well as stage managed Les Misérables for community theatres.

Andrew (A. J.) Lowery is returning for his second year at the Black Hills Playhouse. He is very excited about the chance to return to Custer State Park for a second season. He hopes

After eleven seasons with the Playhouse, Stephen is honored and grateful for his new position as Master Electrician. In the off-season, he continues pursuing his

educational path as well as staying busy from coast to coast. Last fall, Stephen was employed in California with the Los Angeles Opera, and he worked off-Broadway in New York City at the Mint Theatre last winter.

Kenan attends Kansas City Kansas Community College as a theatre major. He has performed in six plays and helped build the sets as well. Kenan has a serious passion

for acting, and hopes to voice act and make it to the big screen one day.

Tyler is from the small town of Cavour, SD. He is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in technical theatre at USD, specializing in lighting and sound, and will graduate in the

spring of 2016. Tyler graduated from Dakota State University in 2012 with a B.S. in digital arts and design, specializing in audio production. Last summer, he married his wife, Ashley, and they currently reside in Madison, SD.

Christopher started to take an interest in theatrical productions when he starred in Dreamgirls as Jimmy Early’s assistant during his

junior year at Washington High School. In his senior year, he performed multiple roles in Meade’s Musical. This is Christopher’s first season at the BHP.

Christina is delighted to be returning for her 3rd season at the Playhouse. She spent the past year in New York City, pursuing a career in costuming. In the time spent

there, Christina designed costumes for Our Town for the St. Bart’s Players and The Merchant of Venice for the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. She is looking forward to another great summer in the Black Hills!

Dan graduated from Brooklyn College in 2012 with a B.A. in technical theatre. He has spent the last three summers working summer stock/repertory theatres,

namely Des Moines Metro Opera in Iowa, The Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine, and The Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre. Dan spends the winters in NYC doing overhire carpentry work for schools and off-Broadway theatres, and as a rigger and lift operator installing large scale holiday decorations. He looks forward to spending this summer in a new place with a new crew of people to work with and learn from.

Melissa is a recent graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN where she majored in theatre arts with a minor in gender

Throughout college, Melissa focused on stage management but also dabbled in directing, acting, and front-of-house, as well as being a supervisor for the theatre’s public relations team and the secretary of Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society. She is happy to be returning for her 2nd summer at the Black Hills Playhouse!

Jesse loves the performing arts. He’s drummed in rock and roll bands since age 10, toured with alternative rock and jazz groups, and played for musicals most of his adult life. Last year included Into the Woods, The

Mikado, Beauty and the Beast, and Guys and Dolls. Currently he is head band director at Sioux City West Middle School and enjoys running sound or playing percussion for gigs, seeing shows, and spending time with his wife whenever possible.

Other than her work at the BHP, some of her favorite productions have been Urinetown, Assassins, and the world premiere of The Sweet Stuff in Chicago.

Jennie May traveled the country playing Old Lady/Blair Daniels in the first national tour of Sunday in the Park with George. She apprenticed acting at the National

Theatre of Great Britain, assistant directed at the English National Opera (London), studied acting with Uta Hagen (NY, HB Studios), studied speech with Julliard’s (and BHP’s) Neff Williams, and voice with Margaret Whiting at Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center (Waterford, CT). Favorite roles include Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd), Dolly Levi (Hello Dolly!), Witch (Into the Woods), Mrs. Peachum (Three Penny Opera), and Veta Louise (Harvey). This is Jennie May’s 16th season at the BHP! She grew up in Hot Springs, graduated from CSC, and is a member of Actor’s Equity Association.

Megan is thrilled to be returning to the Black Hills Playhouse for Shrek the Musical. Last summer at the Playhouse, she choreographed Spamalot. Megan has also worked

as Associate Choreographer for Seussical the Musical (Theatreworks USA) staging the work for three years under choreographer Marcia Milgrom Dodge. She choreographs and dances for videos and a variety of shows around NYC. Megan holds a B.F.A. in dance and a minor in theatre from the University of Minnesota.

KEN OAKLEYMusical Director - She Loves MeMusical Director - Shrek the MusicalB.F.A. theatre ‘93, M.M. voice ‘01, USD. Ken is happy to be back in the Black Hills after living over ten years in Las Vegas. He is currently teaching 7-12 vocal music at Custer

High School. Black Hills audiences will have seen and heard the gamut of Ken’s theatre skills as tenor soloist and opera productions with the Black Hills Symphony; set designer for BHCT; and costumer with the Rapid City Children’s Chorus. Ken’s recent work in Custer includes musical direction of The Legend of Devil’s Gulch and directing The Old Maid and the Thief.

His first summer at the BHP was 1990 (that is so last century) and this is his 20th season. “I always look forward to another summer in the Hills, and this year, I get to act on stage with two of my sons. That

will make it extra special.” Dan is an assistant professor of theatre at Augustana College, and would not be able to do any of this without the love and support of his wife, Debra. He has performed in numerous productions including The Best Man, Tuesdays with Morrie, and A Year with Frog and Toad, and has directed The Secret Garden, The Boys Next Door, The Drowsy Chaperone, and Hound of the Baskervilles.

Deb has been a company member of the BHP for 18 seasons now, some as choreographer, and some in the business arena. This is also where

she met her delightful husband, Dan, 23 years ago. Deb has a passion for people and learning and for making a difference. She is the managing director of Dakota Players, a touring children’s theatre company and outreach of the Black Hills Playhouse, and mother to 3 amazing young men - Dylan, Satchel, and Preston.

This will be Jason’s 14th season at the Playhouse. After having worked in professional theatre all over the country, and a few overseas gigs, he moved to the Black Hills in 2008. In 2011, he married his best friend

Ingrid, and they welcomed their sons Sylvan, in 2012, and Fox, in March 2015. Jason thanks all the incredible supporters who keep the Playhouse thriving, the board and staff for all their hard work, and you for ending the day with a play. Happy 70th Anniversary, BHP!

This is Ingrid’s 5th season with the BHP, and she is thrilled to have her dream job! Favorite past acting credits include Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Little Red Ridinghood in Into the Woods (BHCT), and a company

member in the Storybook Island Children’s Theatre. She has also directed and stage managed numerous shows, and has written three children’s plays that were produced at Storybook Island. Ingrid loves working with her best friend and husband, Jason, and is tickled pink to be the mom of 2 boys, Sylvan and Fox.

Although Sylvan is only 2, this will be his third summer at the BHP. He made his stage debut when he was just 7 months old in the 2012 production of Children of Eden. Sylvan loves to be outside, play

with his friends at the Custer YMCA Child Development Center, wrestle with his dad, snuggle with his mom, and poke at his baby brother. “Hi, Grandma and Grandpa!”

Fox was born in March, and we can only assume he’s happy to be spending his first summer at the BHP. His hobbies include snuggling, gurgling, cooing, crying, and putting up with his brother poking at him.

DAVID LINDSAY-ABAIRE was most recently nominated for two Tony Awards for his work on Shrek The Musical: Best Book of a Musical and Best Score (with composer Jeanine Tesori). Prior to that he was awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban Award as America’s most promising musical theatre lyricist and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Rabbit Hole, which premiered on Broadway at MTC’s Biltmore Theatre. Rabbit Hole also received five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. His other shows include Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the World, High Fidelity and A Devil Inside, among others. In addition to his work in theatre, David’s screen adaptation of Rabbit Hole just finished shooting. It stars Nicole Kidman and is directed by John Cameron Mitchell. ROB ASHFORD won the 2012 Olivier Award for his production of Anna Christie starring Jude Law and Ruth Wilson at London’s Donmar Warehouse. The production opened to rave reviews with The Independent’s anointing it as “picture perfect” and David Benedict stating that “the production’s hallmark is its boldness.” Rob most recently directed the Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof starring Scarlett Johansson

JEANINE TESORI has written four Tony-nominated scores for Broadway: Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center, Thoroughly Modern Millie (lyrics, Dick Scanlan), Caroline, or Change (lyrics, Tony Kushner), and Shrek the Musical (lyrics, David Lindsay-Abaire). The production of Caroline, or Change at the National Theater in London received the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Her first off-Broadway musical, Violet, written with Brian Crawley, received the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1997. Last fall, Ms. Tesori’s Fun Home was presented at The Public Theater as part of the 2012-2013 Public Lab Season. A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck, her commission for the MET/LCT Opera/Theater, was featured at the Glimmerglass Festival in 2011. She has been the recipient of many other honors including Drama Desk and Obie awards, and was cited by ASCAP as being the first woman composer to have “two new musicals running concurrently on Broadway.” She composed the music for The New York Shakespeare Festival’s production of Brecht’s Mother Courage, as translated by Tony Kushner, starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline. She has written songs for the movie Shrek The Third. Her film scores include Nights in Rodanthe, Winds of Change, Show Business, Wrestling With Angels, and Every day with Liev Schreiber. She has produced sixty CD’s for Silver-Burdett Ginn’s Making Music and the original cast albums for Twelfth Night, Violet and Caroline, or Change. Ms. Tesori is currently working on a new opera for WNO.
