GATEWAY PLAYHOUSE 2006 19

rinetown is the show that succeededbeyond anyone’s wildest expecta-tions… and even the creators didn’t

have high ones. Writer Greg Kotis, who con-sidered musicals a cheesy, dated art form, gotthe idea for a show about paying for access towater after finding himself in Paris choosingbetween eating and paying to take a bath.Thinking the idea was so absurd that it justhad to be written as a musical, he brought infellow University of Chicago graduate MarkHollman to compose the score. They chal-lenged themselves to think of the worst con-cept for a show they could imagine, and give itfull expression. “Sort of like what would thewhole ̀ Springtime For Hitler’would have beenlike from `The Producers,’”Kotis has explained.

In 1999, after more than 50 rejectionsfrom various theaters around the country,Kotis and Hollman’s piece was accepted byNY Fringe Festival. The NY Fringe Festival wasstarted in 1996 by The Present Company, atheatre group that lacked the finances to getto Scotland for Edinburgh’s InternationalFringe Festival, the largest performing artsfestival in the world. Briefly, Kotis and Holl-

man got cold feet over the title and asked thefestival organizers if they should change it.But programs and advertising had alreadygone out, and producers told Kotis that ofthe 150 shows in the festival, Urinetown wascausing the most buzz. NY Fringe audienceswent wild for the show’s satire of Big Businesssprinkled with references to classic musicalssuch as West Side Story and Sweeney Todd.Tickets were impossible to come by, and theshow was picked up for an Off-Broadway runin 2001 thanks in part to playwright DavidAuburn (Proof), another classmate of Kotis, who called his producers The Araca Groupduring intermission and urged them to seethe show.

Although naysayers claimed the showwas too offbeat and the subject matterwould never sell, Urinetown became the first(and so far only) NY Fringe Festival show toget a Broadway run, and moved into HenryMiller’s Theater for rehearsals in summer2001. The first new musical of the 2002 sea-son, its initial opening date was pushed backa week after the events of 9/11, and itopened on September 20, 2001. The show’slegitimacy was helped in the eyes of the pub-lic when it was announced that DodgerTheatricals, Tony winners for Titanic and theprevious year’s 42nd Street, would join TheAraca Group among the producers, JohnRando (The Dinner Party and A ThousandClowns) would now direct, and the Fringecast would be virtually replaced with sea-soned Broadway performers includingadmired veteran John Cullum as Caldwell B.Cladwell. Later in the run replacementsincluded Carolee Carmello (City of Angels, TheScarlet Pimpernel) and Charles Shaughnessy,“Mr. Sheffield” of TV’s The Nanny.

Urinetown then was nominated for ten2002 Tony Awards, winning for Best Book,Score, and Direction, losing Best Musical toThoroughly Modern Millie, but winning theDrama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards

for Best Musical. Early in 2004, despite goodsales and the recent recouping of their $3.7million dollar investment, the producerswere ordered to vacate the Henry MillerTheater, scheduled for demolition to bereplaced by a new skyscraper/theatre com-plex. Efforts were made to find a new theatrefor the show, but they did not come tofruition and it closed on January 18, 2004,after 965 performances.

Despite its Broadway closing, Urinetowncontinues its success. A National Tour of theshow starring Tom Hewitt, Christiane Nolland Ron Holgate played across the countryfrom 2003 through 2004, and a new produc-tion premiered in Canada in May of this year.Best news of all, though, for supporters andfans of the wacky show with the crazy name- Hollman and Kotis are reportedly develop-ing both a sequel and a prequel.✦

PAUL ALLAN (Producer) has been involved intheatre since before he can remember. In theearly days of Gateway, he spent his summersfollowing around his grandfather who had his

hands full trying to make ends meet - runninga theatre in the 60’s. Paul grew up here, lookingforward to each summer and being able to domore each year. By the time he was a teenagerhe was beginning to take charge of maintain-ing this 7 acre complex as well as becoming anintegral part of the back stage crew. In the 80’sas a young Gateway producer, Paul spent partof the winter months working in NY on manyoff-Broadway shows - serving as technicalsupervisor, production manager, and/or showcarpenter. At the same time he co-founded atouring company whose shows traveledthroughout the US and other countries world-wide. The set rental company was also foundedat this time and Gateway scenery is constantlybeing trucked to various theatres across thecountry. The main focus, though, is still the pro-ductions he produces here for our patrons. Thisseason began with his 158th production, aswell as a new generation of producer added tothe Gateway Family—Paul’s first son, Luke.

OUR 2007 SEASON will includethe most recent selections available from Broad-way as well as popular favorites. Please help usplan our season by completing the survey atright. The survey helps us narrow down ourchoices from this list of suggestions.

The list does not include shows we areunable to obtain rights to at this time, such asthose currently playing on Broadway (for exam-ple, The Lion King) or as yet unreleased (like LesMiserables and Chicago)—shows we will mostlikely do when they become available.

Please select the SIX shows you would mostlike to see next season, and number themaccording to your preference (with number 1being the show you would most like to see).Thank you for your help.
