THE TWENTY-SEVENTH 20/21 British art fair will once again beheld in the ideally suited space of The Royal College of Art.Collectors, curators and enthusiasts of modern and contemporaryBritish art will welcome the annual opportunity to add to theircollections and meet with dealers specialising in most British schoolssince 1900. The fair upholds a reputation for quality and reliabilitydue to a stringent vetting process. Indeed the event has been creditedwith the increase in international regard for modern British art overthe last three decades.

In the anniversary year of the First World War (and pertinent to thetheme of this issue) some dealers will observe the occasion byshowing relevant works. Liss Fine Art will display Gerald SpencerPryse’s The retreat from Ypres, a painting based on his experiences withQueen Victoria’s Rifles division. Modern British sculpture dealer,Keith Chapman, will show Army nurse, Mount Tavey, a rare drawingby Jacob Epstein. This dates from the summer of 1918 when Epsteinwas hospitalised after serving with the Royal Fusiliers. Another workfrom 1918 is Christopher Nevinson’s Destroyed canal, Ypres on thestand of Osborne Samuel.

Two London dealers will offer a foretaste of monographic galleryshows. Waterhouse and Dodd will show a selection from a majorretrospective of works by Maurice Cockrill to be held in October.Piano Nobile will be showing works from their forthcoming show‘Paul Nash: Works on Paper 1910–1946’, including River, awatercolour from 1932.

Visitors can expect to find a wide range of works by well-knownartists such as Graham Sutherland, Terry Frost, Anthony Caro andGary Hume. The work of lesser-known contemporary artists will alsobe richly represented. Early 20th-century British photography will befor sale on the stand of Beetles and Huxley.
