Investigators piece together clues from plane wreckage

Investigators continue to scour the scene at Hanscom Field try-ing to uncover the cause of a deadly plane crash that killed seven passengers and sparked a fireball that one 911 caller lik-ened to an atomic bomb.

Bedford police on Monday released recordings of emer-gency calls placed shortly after the private Gulfstream IV crashed and erupted into

flames around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday.

One caller, a woman who sounded shaken, said she looked out of her window and “all of a sudden I see this huge dome.”

“It looked like the atomic bomb went off, and it was a mushroom cloud and fire was going everywhere,” she said.

Caller Mike Stephens told the 911 operator that he saw “a giant column of smoke and flames.”

Another woman said she heard a big boom that “shook the house.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has yet to offer any

insight into the crash.Luke Schiada, an NTSB se-

nior air safety investigator, said Monday afternoon that inves-tigators were having trouble reaching the cockpit and flight data recorders due to the posi-tion of the wreckage.

“We have not been able to access a large portion of the air-

craft because of where it came to rest,” Schiada said, adding that crews were setting up a crane “to be able to dig through material in the aircraft” throughout the night.

Investigators said the plane went off Hanscom’s runway, rolled down an embankment and settled in a gully about 2,000 feet away. A witness told investigators that the plane never became airborne.

“We are not drawing any conclusion from that one fact,” Schiada said.

The Philadelphia Inquirer confirmed that its co-owner, Lewis Katz, 72, was among those killed.

On Sunday, three other pas-sengers were identified as Anne B. Leeds, Marcella M. Dalsey and Susan K. Asbell, all friends of Katz’s from South New Jersey.

Middlesex County pros-ecutors on Monday identified James McDowell, 51, of George-town, Delaware, as the pilot, and Bauke “Mike” de Vries, 45, of Marlton, New Jersey, as the co-pilot.

Teresa Ann Benhoff, 48, of Easton, Maryland, was identi-fied as the flight attendant.

Partial human remains found in Charles River

Partial human remains were discovered Monday near the Boston University sailing pavil-ion along the Charles River.

State police said the re-mains were found shortly after noon in the river.

“The origin of the partial

remains is the subject of an ongoing investigation,” state police said in a statement.

Police released no other in-formation about the discovery, except that there is no threat to the public. “The public may be assured, however, that based on the investigation to date, the discovered remains do not indicate any ongoing threat to public safety,” state police said. METRO

the car and hit the gear shift … when she slammed it into drive she fell on top of the gas pedal,” Costello told WFXT-TV. “The car went for a swim. Workers hurt, trapped in bridge project Two workers standing 35 feet below the surface of the Long-fellow Bridge became trapped when a chute pouring concrete into their work area gave way, trapping them in the empty shaft.

Boston fire and EMS crews raced to the landmark bridge, which is in the middle of a rehabilitation project, at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday.

The two workers were about 35 feet down in a shaft where the “salt and pepper” towers usually are. The towers were removed earlier this year as part of the refurbishing project.

A technical rescue team was called in to help reach the injured workers. The workers were placed in stokes baskets and lifted out of the shaft one at a time just after 2 p.m. A

crane already on site for the construction was used to hoist the workers out of the shaft.

They suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, the fire department said.

OSHA officials responded to the scene. MICHAEL NAUGHTON

In court. Pal of bombing suspect alleges police put words in his mouth A friend of the accused Boston Marathon bomber charged with interfering with the investigation into the blasts said on Monday he had no idea he could have walked away from hours of question-ing four days after the attack.

Lawyers for the friend, Kazakh exchange student Dias Kadyrbayev, are trying to persuade a federal judge to throw out statements he made under interrogation in a police station, after being ordered out of his apartment by heavily armed agents, say-ing his comments were not voluntary.

Kadyrbayev, 20, is one of three college friends of accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev charged with ham-pering the investigation by going to Tsarnaev’s dormi-tory room at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth three days after the attack and removing a laptop and backpack containing empty fireworks shells.

Kadyrbayev and fellow Kazakh exchange student Azamat Tazhayakov were both questioned for hours on the night of April 19, 2013,

although neither was ar-rested until the following day. During hearings last month, officials said the pair would have been free to leave the police station where they had been brought in handcuffs had they asked.

Kadyrbayev and Tazhaya-kov, both charged with obstruction of justice, could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

A Level 3 sex offender alleg-edly broke into the home of an Arlington woman and at-tacked and raped her Sunday night, police said.

Essie Billingslea, 45, of Boston, faces multiple charg-es including aggravated rape, home invasion and assault and battery, according to Arlington police. He was or-dered held without bail dur-ing his arraignment Monday. He pleaded not guilty.

Police were called to the woman’s home for a well-be-ing check at about 8:15 p.m. When they arrived, officers saw a man fleeing out a back door. The officers chased the

man, who they later learned was Billingslea, and arrested him.

Inside the home, officers found the woman suffering from serious injuries. She told police that Billingslea broke into her home, beat her and then raped her at knife point, police said.

“This is a heinous crime. A woman has been viciously at-tacked in her home by a Level 3 sex offender with a history of violence,” Arlington Police Chief Frederick Ryan said in a statement. “I commend my officers for capturing this

dangerous felon, and we will spare no resource in provid-ing the victim with the sup-port and care that she needs.”

Billingslea was convicted of several offenses, according to his listing on the state’s Sex Offender Registry Board. He was convicted in 1989 of rape of a child with force and in 1995 of rape and abuse of a child and indecent as-sault and battery on a child under 14.

The U.S. power sector must cut carbon dioxide emissions 30 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels, according to federal regulations unveiled on Mon-day that form the centerpiece of the Obama administration’s climate change strategy.

The Environmental Protec-tion Agency’s proposal is one of the most significant environmental rules proposed by the United States, and could transform the power sector, which relies on coal for nearly 38 percent of electricity.

Gina McCarthy, administra-tor of the EPA, said on Monday that between 2020 and 2030, the amount of carbon dioxide the proposal would reduce in the U.S. would be more than double the carbon pollution from the entire power sector in 2012.

States will have flexible means to achieve ambitious but attainable targets, regard-less of their current energy mixes. States which rely heav-ily on coal-fired power plants are thought to have the tough-

est tasks ahead. The plan has come under

preemptive attack from many Republican lawmakers as well as Democrats from coal-heavy states like West Virginia.

But the plan looked less restrictive than some had

feared, with targets arguably easier to reach because carbon emissions had already fallen by about 10 percent by 2013 from the 2005 baseline level, partly due to retirement of coal plants in favor of cleaner-burning natural gas. REUTERS

Sedaris reads June 7 at 6 p.m.at Harvard Bookstore (www.harvard.com/event /david_sedaris1). HUGH HAMRICK

Summer is paperback season. Until last year, it was also the season acclaimed author David Sedaris sweated the most, liter-ally. But his outlook changed for the sunnier — and drier — after he and his partner, Hugh, moved to the U.K., where he claims you can wear a sweater in July. “English people com-plain about it, but it’s fantastic for me,” he says. “Now I like summer for the first time in my life!”

This week, the humorist releases his latest soft cover, “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls,” a story collection recall-ing summers past that were impressionable, if sometimes oppressive. We talk to Sedaris, who in the coming months embarks on a book tour as well as a voyage to Vietnam, about jaywalking and jet-setting in the heat of June.

If given the writing prompt “How I spent my vacation,” what do you expect your response to be for summer 2014?

by saying, “Excuse me, are you a Polish woman? Do you speak Polish? Me, too! Do you want to go to my hotel for a drink?” ... They were delighted and didn’t give me a ticket.

How would you explain a Fitbit to them? He’d probably be walking that distance already to get water from a well or something. He wouldn’t have a computer, so you would just say, “Want a rubber bracelet?”

Considering your world travels and foray into foreign languages in “Easy Tiger,” have you learned any Vietnamese words? All I can say in Vietnamese is “keo” — it means candy. ... I enjoy studying [a country’s lan-guage] for a month, then going there and running my mouth and seeing where it gets me. I used Pimsleur for Polish. When Hugh and I were in Warsaw, I crossed a street, and all of a sudden these two police-women were there pulling out their book to write me a ticket for jaywalking. And I pulled out all of my Polish. I started

For me, it’s always “The Sum-mer of Something.” This year, I got a Fitbit. You walk 10,000 steps and it sends you an email saying, “That’s great! A lot of people don’t walk that far. Do you think you can walk 5,000 more steps?” And so I say, “I bet I can!” A week ago, I walked 60,000 steps. That’s 25.5 miles. I’m completely ob-sessed. It’s like a sickness; I’ve

been Fitbit-ten. It will be “The Summer of the Fitbit” because it can’t go on. It just can’t.

In “A Friend in the Ghetto,” you say the type of book you most enjoy is one about a character whose life is fundamentally diff erent from yours. What would that person do on summer vacation? He wouldn’t have a word for

Berlin: New York in the ’80s, but cleaner New York City was once a glo-rious wasteland. Three decades ago, the middle class had been scared away — vowing to re-turn only when a mayor Dis-neyfied the Gomorrah that was Times Square. In their place, artists filled today’s multimil-lion-dollar apartments, party-ing through a last hurrah be-fore the rich muscled their way back in.

Though some locals com-pare Berlin to New York in the ’80s, it’s a less decadent and more manageable bacchanalia, typically. It’s a clean metropo-lis, every block fit with trees and cobblestone.

There are chunks of mega-prosperity: Centrally located Charlottenburg and Tiergarten — housing the second largest urban park in the country — promise boutiques and design-er brands.

But the young and/or hip don’t live in this place, dubbed “City-West.” They dwell in the east’s Kreuzberg — which is south of what remains of the Berlin Wall — and in the north’s Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte.

Of course, Berlin is modern only because it has to be. Seven decades ago, it was a city de-

stroyed. Only 25 years ago, it was a city divided, with democ-racy on one side and socialism on the other. Today’s Berlin is built on top of it, though what’s underneath has a way of pok-ing through. Parts of the Berlin Wall still stand for purposes of historical interest, but they’re covered in graffiti.

For now, to borrow a line from “The Simpsons,” it’s a city that works. Feast on it before it turns into Manhattan.

Hallo! The time is ripe to take a romp through Germany’s capital, a hot spot built upon a haunted past.

Drunk food

Good eats

The large Turkish population that has long dwelled in the city introduced one of its two chief forms of street food: the doner, a gyrolike meal that stuff s meat, assorted veggies and feta in a pita or wrap. The other go-to drunk belly-fi ller is the currywurst, which pairs sausage with ketchup and a few bumps of curry powder.

The doner is one of thegreat pieces of Berlin street food. PROVIDED

A city divided

Back in the day

Ruins and other signs of the former East Germany are peppered throughout the city. Look in the right places and you might see a German Dem-ocratic Republic-era neon sign or statue. Museums abound on life in the GDR, the most popular (if not most rigorous)

being the DDR Museum, an interactive re-creation of the era.

The most ostentatious display of Berlin’s ghosts is the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe — a controver-sial block of coffi n-shaped con-crete slabs whose ambiguous design allows for projection or charges of inadequacy.

More action needed to fi x VA problemIt has been sad to have read about all the long waits at VA hospitals and facilities for medical treatments. VA Chief Eric Shinseki did not seem to have a clue on how to fi x the problems and now has resigned.

Meanwhile, President Obama believes there needs to be accountability at the De-partment of Veteran Aff airs. Well my question is: Why did

it take so long for actions to be taken and an investigation to go forward? The resigna-tion of Eric Shinseki is only the beginning, and I believe an entire overhaul needs to be underway to correct the problems that involve all veterans.

To do anything less would be a disservice and a com-plete disgrace to all veterans who put their lives on the line to protect the nation. As a veteran, I am appalled and outraged over this insult to all of our veterans. Action is needed now!FREDERICK R. BEDELL JR., VIA EMAIL

Understand what you’re trying to banRe: ‘Change the way we confront violent people’ (Metro, June 2) Letter writer Murray Calhoun seems really concerned about guns. He thinks weapons capable of shooting hundreds of rounds per minute should be kept out of the hands of citizens. He’s not alone. That’s why the federal government banned them in 1934. The perpetra-tors of all of the mass shoot-

ings that have occurred in the last few years all utilized semi-automatic weapons. Semi-automatic weapons fi re a single shot per trigger pull. If Calhoun is in favor of a complete gun ban, he should say so. Banning guns might be easier than dealing with the failures of our mental health system, but it won’t solve the problem. US men’s roster guideA glance at the players who will be representing the U.S.

in the upcoming World Cup in Brazil.

MATT [email protected]

The tide is slowly turning in the States when it comes to discussing the U.S. men’s soccer team. Following the initial shock of Landon Donovan’s exclusion from the 2014 World Cup roster, the spotlight is about to shine on the players who the U.S. actually does have on its roster as the big tournament in Brazil quickly approaches.

The U.S. seems to be ditch-ing its conservative approach in favor of an attacking style that will feature backs Fabian Johnson, DaMarcus Beasley and Timmy Chandler. Geoff Cameron and Matt Besler will also be key in front of goalten-der Tim Howard. The U.S. will play its first game on June 16 against Ghana. A look at the players American fans will be counting on:

Striker

Jozy Altidore

The U.S. will rely heavily on Altidore to fi nd the net in Brazil. The issue? The striker hasn’t scored a goal in more than 180 days and took a great deal of heat for scor-ing just once in league play with Sunderland in the English Premier League.

“Everybody is so wor-ried about my confi dence,” Altidore said after going scoreless in the United States’ 2-1 exhibition victory over Turkey last Sunday. “My confi dence is fi ne. It’s not going to change whether I score a hat trick or don’t score at all. I’m fi ne.”

Striker

Clint Dempsey

Dempsey, the U.S. National Team captain, will be another key man up front with Altidore. The Seattle Sounders striker scored from point-blank range in last Sunday’s U.S. win over Turkey. His history as a goal scorer is outstanding, owning the record for most goals scored by an American in the English Premier League (57). He began his career with the New England Revolution in MLS, winning the league’s Rookie of the Year award in 2004. The Nacogdoches, Texas, native is currently the team leader

in goals with the Sounders as he has eight in just nine games played this season.

Jackson made statements

$25,000 for the comments.

Goalkeeper

Tim Howard

The 35-year-old is the U.S. team’s elder statesman and has been the man in net for the Red, White and Blue for the past seven years. His top game in net for the Americans arguably came in the 2010 World Cup when he held England to just one goal as

the U.S. settled for a draw. He currently plays for Everton in the English Premier League. Howard was second in the Premier League in shutouts this season with 15 in 37 games In 2012, the North Brunswick, New Jersey, native set a new Premier League record for consecutive appear-ances with one club (184).

TIM HOWARD HAS BEEN

THE U.S. GOALTENDER

FOR SEVEN YEARS.

Right back, left back

Fabian Johnson

Johnson, a German-born defender, will give U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann plenty of versatility on the defensive end. He can play left back and right back and will likely get the daunting assignment of attempting to blanket Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo when the two teams meet on June 22. Johnson scored his fi rst goal in a U.S. jersey this past Sunday against Turkey when he took a pretty feed from midfi elder Michael Bradley.

Funny coincidence?

Rondo talks Love run-in at Fenway this past Sunday

The “Summer of Love” in Boston began with a big social media bang this past weekend as a photo of current Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo greeting Minnesota Timber-wolves power forward Kevin Love at Sunday’s Red Sox-Rays game at Fenway Park created quite an Internet buzz.

Love is said to want out of Minnesota as his agent told the T-Wolves recently that his client will fl ee after next season if he is not traded. Love would become an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Boston has been men-

tioned as a top destination for Love as Celtics president Danny Ainge holds assets in the form of nine fi rst-round draft picks over the next fi ve seasons as well as several young, talented players.

Rondo spoke to report-ers Monday about meeting Love outside the EMC Club at Fenway on Sunday.

“The only pitch that was thrown, I think, was [Red Sox pitcher] Jon Lester,” Rondo joked when asked if he was openly recruiting Love to come to Boston. “I didn’t pitch anything. I just told him to enjoy his time here.”

Rondo claimed that he didn’t know Love was at Fenway until after the game had started and that it was a

coincidence that the two were at the game on the same day.

“When I saw Kevin, I spoke to him,” Rondo said. “I wished him good luck here — his time [visiting] Boston. He spent a couple days here. I told him I was spending a couple months here.”

The C’s point guard, who has been part of several trade rumors himself over the years, touched on how Love could potentially help Boston.

“I think we’d be a lot better if you add a guy like Kevin,” Rondo said. “He’s a range-shooting 4, he’s going to help on the glass. Obviously we haven’t been the best on the glass the past few years. … But this is all speculation.” MATT BURKE

MLB. Peavy gets ball as Red Sox continue road series against IndiansRed Sox starter Jake Peavy (1-2, 4.50 ERA) turned in one of the more impressive outings of his nearly year-old Boston stint last Thursday in a 4-3 Sox win over Atlanta as he worked a season-high eight innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits while walking just one. The righty will look to extend Boston’s hot play of late Tuesday night when he takes the hill at Progressive Field in Cleveland (7 p.m., NESN). Peavy will be opposed by the Indians’ T.J. House (0-1, 4.05 ERA). MATT BURKE
