Message from the Chairman

Thanks to all who have sailed with us in the past, and to those of you who are joining us for the first time. This year we celebrate the 91st running of the Invitational Mills Trophy Race, and we continue the Commemorative Race Courses which take us over the historic battleground of Commodore Perry’s victory. Note that the Mills Trophy Course has been slightly modified to include the CIC buoy along the west shore of Catawba.

Reaching these history creating milestones is a credit to all of the participants, sponsors, and committee volunteers that have supported the Mills Trophy Race over the years. Sadly last year, we lost Mills Master, Laszlo Goda, our long time supporter with the “Splash Dance” gang. His continuing support for the Mills Trophy Race will be greatly missed.

Please take the time to read the various articles included in this issue that document both the historic significance and the evolution of this event. Of particular interest this year is the naming of Sybil Turin as the Honorary Chairman as well as a three decade retrospective highlighting photos from 1984, 1994, and 2004 (See the “Do You Remember…” feature).

Back with us again is Principle Race Officer Commodore Ed Theisen and Race Committee personnel from the DRYA race management team. Ed continues to be involved in supporting junior sailing and US Sailing national activities, retiring after many successful years as the PRO for the weekly races for the DRYA Series on Lake St. Clair.

Make sure you check out the 2014 Mills Trophy Race Sailing Instructions (SI’s) at www.yachtscoring.com for the details of the race courses, complete with a Battle of Lake Erie buoy “gate” marked by two strobe lit tetrahedrons, and the Class Flags to be used on the start boat to identify the order of starts. The SI’s are the official rules governing the race, and take precedence over the “general information” section of this program.

Smooth Sailing,

TOLEDO, OHIO 43611

On behalf of the Toledo Yacht Club Bridge Offers and Trustees, it is my privilege to welcome the participants to the 2014 Mills Trophy Race. This year we celebrate the 91st running of this historic race, one of the premier sailing events on the Great Lakes. Once again, it is a pleasure for Toledo Yacht Club to host this outstanding event. As the 105th Commodore of Toledo Yacht Club, I recognize the special partnership which we share in the Mills Trophy Race. This rich history dates back to 1907 and we are extremely proud to still share this prestigious race with our sailors and sponsors. I want to extend a special thanks to the Mills Race Committee, TYC members and volunteers for their tireless effort and loyal support which makes this event so enjoyable for all who participate. The meetings and countless hours of work do not go unnoticed and assure that a wonderful weekend will take place for all who participate. This annual race is an event which is “designed for sailors to bring out the best in sailors” and would not be possible without the participation of so many. To the sailors, we thank you for coming back year after year to make this the terrific event which it has always been. From the year 1907 to 2014, we appreciate your continued support. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Mills Race activities at TYC and at “The Bay”. As always, it promises to be a special celebration which is enjoyed by all. Wishing the best of luck and safe travels to all of the participants. May you have an evening of clear skies, smooth sailing, with the wind at your back.

The StartRaces will be started as follows:

Signals shall be made at Race Committee discretion. The starting signal for each class shall be the warning signal for the next. Each signal shall be removed one (1) minute before the next is made.

See Preliminary Starting Times on page 31 or as modified and posted online on the Official Bulletin Board.

Starting LineOn page 30 is a diagram of the

starting line. The starting line is approximately 1.5 statute miles, ESE (130°) of the Toledo Harbor Light. The line itself shall be between an Orange Flag on the race committee yacht (identified by a Yellow Flag with the black letters “RC”) and the Orange tetrahedron located near the observers committee yacht at the opposite end of the line.

Committee Boat Protection Limit Marks

One or more Limit Marks (flag buoy with half red and half green horizontal bands) may be set near a starting line. If a yacht touches any limit mark, the starting line boat, or passes between a limit mark and a starting line boat, she shall have touched a starting mark.

Committee Boat Restricted Area

All yachts shall keep clear of the starting area and the first leg of the course prior to the starting of the class ahead. All yachts sailing in this regatta may be subject to protest by the Race Committee for failing to stay clear of the starting areas. (See Chart of the Courses page 30.)

PostponementsA postponement will be

signalled by the sounding of two signals, either gun or horn, and accompanied by the display of the “AP” shape with vertical red and white panel stripes or the code answering pennant. This will mean that all classes not yet started are postponed. This signal will be lowered (accompanied by a sound signal) one minute before the warning signal for the next class to start. The starting order and intervals between divisions will be resumed after the period of postponement.

In the event of prolonged severe weather, the Race Committee may postpone the race start until the following morning. If such should occur, the Race Committee reserves the right to change the course for all entrants. The new course and new start sequence schedule will be posted at Toledo Yacht Club within one hour of the Race Committee’s return to the dock at Toledo Yacht Club.

In the event of complete cancellation of the race, festivities will continue as planned at Put-in-Bay. There will be no refunds of entry or wrist band fees.

RecallsIndividual recalls will be signaled

by displaying the code flag X and making a sound signal. The Committee will endeavor to call the racing number of the yacht or yachts starting prematurely on VHF Channel 71. Failure to make or receive such a call will not relieve a yacht of the responsibility to make a proper start and will not be grounds for a protest against the Race Committee. The individual recall signal will be struck when all premature starters have started correctly or at the preparatory signal for the next class whichever occurs first. Yachts starting prematurely and not restarting may be subject to either protest by the race committee or assessment of an appropriate scoring penalty as calculated in RRS Rule 44.3(c) There will be no general recalls.

Destination Put-in Bay

200 years ago, the Lake Erie islands first made the headlines, or maybe the town crier’s calls, in 1813. That was the year that Commodore Perry routed the British fleet a few miles to the west of the archipelago. It is told that the survivors of both fleets put in at what is now Put-in-Bay to bury their dead and tend their wounded. It is further stated that there was much fraternizing and exchanging of alibis much like the custom of the contestants in present day boat races and rugby matches.

Perry was the first commodore to visit the island, but not the last. Since time immemorial Put-in-Bay has been host to the annual Senior, Junior, and Power regattas of the of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association said to be the most populous, from an entry standpoint, of any operation of this type. There are always commodores galore in attendance, in all kinds of raiment and in various states of dignity.

In the Gay ‘90s and the early years of the 20th century, the islands were known as the Playground of Presidents. The heads of state more frequently mentioned as visitors were Cleveland and Taft. These two were the most rotund leaders in the history of the republic. So it must be assumed that they were attracted by good living as well as by the superb bass fishing.

In those days the mammoth Hotel Victory was in full swing and there were daily steamer calls from Cleveland, Detroit and Toledo unloading thousands of excursionists. Many of these visiting pilgrims would be overcome by the fervency of their devotions. The fallen celebrants would be loaded on flat bed wagons and delivered to the departing steamers. It was inevitable that many would be misaddressed which led to droll complications.

The noble Doric column celebrating Perry’s victory is recognized by many patrons of architecture as the world’s foremost peace symbol. A trip to the top will be rewarding.

Hospitality TentThe PIBYC Hospitality Tent is

guarded and closed to the public. Only your wrist band gets you in. Additional wrist bands may be purchased at the Put-in-Bay Duty Office, with the skipper or his representative showing his skipper’s card.

This is the hub of Race Weekend activities ... a huge open air venue beside the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, where everyone meets, drinks, eats and swaps tall tales. The Mills Race Committee makes available complimentary beverages all day

Honorary Chairman: Sybil Turin

Sybil Turin, along with her sister and two brothers, was raised on a farm in northern Maine by parents who encouraged education and fostered a love of the outdoors. Her early schooling was in a one-room schoolhouse, Sybil being the only one in her class. Summertime would find Sybil and her sister at their uncle’s cottage on the shore. The old lobster boat he converted into a sailboat became her first sailing experience; not a racing machine, but it was a start.

After graduating from Colby College, Sybil lived in Boston. Her love of outdoor activities continued, and, while on a skiing trip in Stowe, VT in 1963, she turned the head of University of Toledo Physics and Astronomy Department Chair, Dr. John Turin. In May of that year, she came to Toledo to visit John who introduced her to Dragon sailing. As an avid Dragon

sailor, John was involved in the transition of the Toledo Yacht Club sailing fleet to the formation of North Cape Yacht Club. Sybil and John were married later in 1963 and Sybil moved to Toledo.

In 1964, not many women were actively involved in racing sailing, but there were Flying Juniors at NCYC, which is where Sybil really learned to sail on her own. About that time, Sybil and the other NCYC “racing widows” whose husbands were active racers, banded together to form the Wet Hens. The Wet Hens met once a month and took over a designated boat (with the

owner on board), brought food and drinks for an evening sail, and took complete charge of the boat. Sybil was the 2nd President of the Wet Hens.

When John died in 1973, Sybil started crewing for others, including Gary Bernard in his Thistle, where Sybil learned she could droop hike. Later she crewed with Mike Comber and Gary on Gold Rush, Port Clinton’s John Nicodemos on Seershah and many others.

In 1972, Sybil, Joan Pomeroy, Evelyn Younk, Nancy Younk Ward, Hilma Seik and Kay Latham Drake formed the first all-women team to race in the Mills Trophy Race on the Latham’s Columbia 29, Ugly Duckling. During preparations for the race at Toledo Yacht Club, Orris Tabner was on hand for an interview. Apparently not very comfortable with the task, Orris asked, “So what are you girls going to wear during the race?” To which Kay responded, “Bikinis of course, what do you think?” The Blade also interviewed the crew (see picture). Pleased that she was

finally going to be on the sports page, imagine Sybil’s disappointment when the article appeared on the society page! But Sybil’s long-distance racing days were just beginning. In 1981, after completing her first triathlon, she jumped aboard Gary Hall’s Morgan 41 Great White for a Tran Erie Race delivery to Buffalo. Once there and recuperated, she continued with the crew for the race back to Toledo. Sybil also sailed in a number of Port Huron-Mackinac Races over the years. She crewed with Gary Hall and with Charlie Antal on a new Catalina 38, where they learned to sail the spinnaker along the Shore Course. Most recently, she sailed on John and Judy Greiner’s Red Cloud in 2001. After a particularly exhausting and long Mac drifter, Sybil hitched a car ride to Toledo with Shirley Levy and Brenda Haag; Brenda driving, Shirley working on her article to meet The Blade deadline and Sybil fast asleep in the back seat.

After 1972, Sybil continued to race the Mills Trophy Race and became one of the first sailors designated as a Mills Master (25 years). Since the mid-1990s, Sybil has crewed on John and Judy Greiner’s Santana 35, Red Cloud. The highlight of her Mills experiences being the 2010 win of the Mills Trophy.

When you see Sybil Turin, congratulate her for being the 2014 Mills Trophy Race Honorary Chairman and thank her for her part in opening the door to sailboat racing for so many.

2010 Red Cloud Crew: Sybil Turin, Judy Greiner, John Pershing, Russ Hurford, Justin Roebuck and John Greiner.

Page 33: 2014 Mills Trophy Race

Team Flat Stanley is made up of long time friends that have sailed together or against each other in IOR, PHRF, T-Ten, Snipe, Melges 20 and the Melges 32 Class over the past

34 + years. With a focus on constant improvement while having a great time. The Flat Stanley team competes in various regattas in the south during the winter and during the summer months includes many I-LYA junior sailors.

It was another beautiful day for the Mills Trophy Race, calling for lighter conditions. On the fast-tow to the start from Put-in-Bay Friday afternoon, we encountered a few brief showers and sprinkles but once at the starting area it was a pleasant sailing day. Fortunate to have some decent reaching conditions and awesome crew, we were able to stay in touch with the big boats in our class right up to the new Bi-Centennial Buoy, which

33

2013 Mills Trophy Winner

compressed everyone together again. After dark, we had occasional sightings of their running lights, successfully keeping them close, but still concerned about the other light-reaching machines close behind us.

Shortly after dark, the crew started to get hungry, and having limited space below on a Melges 32 means the ‘galley’ is limited (or non-existent) as well, so the menu selections for dinner were… somewhat limited. As “dinner” was passed out of the companionway and crew started to dine, we suffered a major dinner malfunction and the entire dinner was spilled, in the dark, onto the cockpit sole… yes, the entire 10 lb bag of M&Ms were rolling everywhere like a bucket of multi colored, candy coated ball bearings! This served as extra incentive to reach the island as quickly as possible with as few crew maneuvers as necessary to minimize crew break dancing on the M&Ms. Those of you that remember the infamous bug race of the ‘80s and what it did to clothing and raingear can imagine what the M&Ms were doing to the crew.

Finishing just before 4:00 am was a pleasant surprise for what was forecast to be a very long, slow race. A few beverages on the boat before opening Frosty’s at 6:00 am… always a good idea! After a few bloodies, with the sun was getting higher in the sky we thought we should check in on the boat… Colorful but not pretty. It took lots of Curtis’ custom mixed soap and some good scrubbing before there was no evidence of our dinner malfunction.

In summary, the crew sailed flawlessly and as owners, we couldn’t possibly find a better group of phenomenal sailors that are so much fun to sail with. Thanks again to Audrey, Phil, Curtis, Wilson and Tim, as well as Chris who makes sure the boat is always prepared.

Good luck to all 2014 Mills Trophy Race competitors!Trey & Terry and Team Flat Stanley

“Shark” Wins Mills Race

Toledo Yacht Club sloop Shark skippered by George Craig wins the first Mills Race. Shark completed the 191 statute mile course in 28 hours, 25 minutes, averaging 6.7 MPH.

Pre-race scuttlebutt centered around a long distance race between Shark, a 76 foot sloop, and Hussar II, a 70 foot yawl, skippered by Commodore Ed Affleck of TYC. Shark had been ocean racing and this would have been the first fresh water competition between the two cruising yachts. The race never materialized as Commodore Affleck had planned a two week cruise to Lake Ontario to watch the Canada Cup Races during the August Race weekend. Shark was however challenged by Czarina, a 54 foot yawl, Ethel, a 53 foot sloop, and Enright, a 44 foot sloop, all from Toledo Yacht Club.

The Shark was designed and built by N. Herreshoff. She was a 76 foot sloop with a 46 foot waterline, a 14 foot beam, with a draft of 11 foot 6 inches. The Shark carried 3,667 square feet of canvas sail and a racing crew of approximately 18 men. The Shark was made of wood with a flush deck and a net weight of 23 tons and a gross weight of 31 tons. She had no auxiliary power.

Mills Trophy Race History

IntroductionThis year marks the 104th

Anniversary of the Race for the Mills Trophy. Since 1907, the legacy of yacht racing under sail on the Great Lakes has been enhanced by competition in the renowned Lake Erie long distance race for the Mills Trophy.

The race for the Mills Trophy has distinguished itself over the past one hundred years as the premier sailing yacht racing event on Lake Erie in both the 20th and 21st century.

The Toledo Yacht Club was a significant sailboat racing club in the United States when the Mills Trophy Race was initiated in 1907.

Commodore Merrill B. Mills of Detroit, an ardent yachtsman and a Life Member of TYC since 1898, and owner of the 142 foot steam yacht, Cynthia, expressed his desire to support TYC after the disastrous fire in 1907 which destroyed the two story, three year old colonial club house.

To stimulate sailboat racing on the Great Lakes, Commodore Mills deeded to TYC a beautiful sterling silver punch bowl with ladle and cups. The trophy was valued at $1000 in 1907. On one side of the Mills Trophy Bowl is the inscription “Toledo Yacht Club, For the Annual Long Distance Race”.

Quoting from the Deed of Gift - “For the purpose of encouraging proficiency in the art of navigation upon the Great Lakes by means of popular contests in yachting.” This lofty goal has been embraced today by the TYC Mills Trophy Race Committee and the Storm Trysail Club, to make this an event for the sailors.

Designed for sailorsto bring out the best in sailors.

Sailing Yacht “Shark”

The first Mills Race course was 191 statute miles long. It started at the Red Gas buoy No. 34 at the mouth of the Maumee River and ran out to the Toledo Light eight and one half miles, then turned Northeast to the Detroit River Light, 19 miles, then Southeast toward the Cleveland Crib Light, 78 and one half miles, passing North of Pelee Island. From Cleveland, Westward back to the Toledo Light, 85 miles passing South of Kelleys Island and South Bass Island.

With the sound of the starting cannon, the first Mills Race started at 6:50 pm on Friday night, August 9th. As the four big yachts crossed the starting line together, Enright crossed first. However, Ethel had the windward position and quickly blanketed and overtook Enright. Shark, crossed the line third with Czarina only a few seconds behind. The wind was reported as mild with just enough to fill the canvas of the large sailing yachts. Shark started with a “balloon jib” and main and the other three yachts with top sails and main. The general weather conditions

on Lake Erie were ideal. The wind strengthened, and the yacht Shark was reported to be keeping pace with a big freighter for 50 miles of the course. Shark completed the course in 28 hours 25 minutes at 11:15 pm Saturday night. Enright finished second at 6:58 am Sunday morning, 7 hours and 43 minutes later. Ethel finished third at 7:31 am Sunday only 33 minutes behind Enright.

By late Sunday morning, there was considerable concern as to the sailing yacht Czarina’s whereabouts. Fear for the crew and yacht were relieved when Skipper A. Gallagher called from Port Clinton and said he had difficulty finding the Cleveland Crib Light in the dark and had put in at 12 o’clock Saturday night. The winner, Shark and owner/skipper George Craig’s names were engraved on a silver plaque for mounting on the ebony trophy base and a set of heavy sterling silver knives, forks and spoons were gifted to George Craig. Second place Enright received a “Talk-U-Phone” and Ethel’s, third place prize was a fishing outfit.

1907 Courseat TYC. With the revival in 1932 several additional sterling silver cup trophies were added.

A triangular course of 74 miles from “Toledo Light to and around Detroit River Light, thence to and around a flag at the entrance of Put-in-Bay Harbor and returning to the finish line directly to Toledo Harbor Light”.

With the announcement, sailors responded from Detroit to Cleveland with 20 entries from Toledo. Responding craft ranged from the six meter class to the magnificent two masted schooner Bimesa.

Thirty-eight years later, in 1970, marked the Golden Jubilee of the Mills Race. A 78 mile triangular course ran Northeast from Toledo Light to Colchester Reef, then South to Green Island and then Northwest returning to the Toledo Light. Approximately 100 sailing yachts competed in three classes for nine trophies. In the first 45 years, 1932 to 1977, the Mills Long Distance Race competition expanded in racing classes and trophies. By 1976, there were 8 sailing classes and 14 trophies.

The second series of races for the Mills Trophy was dominated by:

BYC with 17 winsDYC with 16 wins

No contests were held between 1978 and 1980.

The Race That Was Not To Be

In 1978, a great controversy ensued over the cancellation of the race program just before the starting gun. Months of effort by the TYC Race Committee and countless hours and cost by the contestants in preparing their boats seemed for naught. Extremely bad weather had set in, but some sailors wanted to accept the challenge.

Although the TYC Race Committee had to announce the cancellation, the real authority for racing rested with the US Coast Guard Commander. Safety was paramount, but “Monday morning quarterbacking” started a heated controversy.

The largest boat entered in the 1978 race was a 49 footer, but more than half of the fleet was 30 feet and under, with some at 24 feet. Although the Class A

48

Although the main event was the four big sailing yachts racing in the Mills Trophy Long Distance Race, a second “free for all” sailing race was held with eleven entries, and a catboat race with four entries.

The Racing Series I Begins 1907 - 1917

The following ten years through 1917 saw the Detroit Boat Club win the Mills Trophy in 1908 with Agawa and again in 1909. TYC recaptured the coveted cup in 1910 with Elsie and again in 1911. Of the original four yachts in 1907, only Shark was to win the coveted Mills Trophy. In the first Long Distance Race Series of eleven contests:Toledo Yacht Club had won 5Detroit Country Club had won 2Cleveland Yachting Club won 2Lakeland Yacht Club had won 1Buffalo Yacht Club had won 1

Major trophies were the Mills Trophy, President Taft Trophy and the Governor Harmon Cup.

Although there have been many rough passages for the boats to contend with, there has been only one tragedy to mar this series of contests. In 1913, during a gale, Kid Wildes, a prominent yachtsman sailing on the Spray of TYC, was washed overboard in the night and drowned.

The first Mills Race Series ended in 1917 as the country was in the midst of World War I. Times improved in the Roaring Twenty’s and racing fever grew, but the depression of 1929 ended the enthusiasm. The race was notrevived again until 1932.

The Second Race Series 1932 - 1977

Resurgence of young sailors in yacht racing at TYC was witnessed in 1932. The decision was made to bring back the famous Mills Long Distance Race with a six meter class. Madcap, with the famous Geroge King and crew, kept the punch bowl

boats were capable of running in extremely heavy seas, the safety of the smaller craft had to be considered. An excellent account of circumstances surrounding the cancellation were recorded by the TYC Rear Commodore and published a few days later.

The local Coast Guard informed the TYC Commodore at 10:00 am that they were not going to allow the race to be held. It was at the TYC Commodore’s request that a grace period be granted and that the race not be postponed so early. TYC was granted a two hour grace period. The local Commander of the Coast Guard at that time had seven distress calls to handle and had under his command all of the Toledo Coast Guard boats, two from Marblehead Coast Guard Station, a helicopter from the Michigan Station and four auxiliary boats available to help. The Coast Guard Commander also had advance weather information which advised him that a more severe weather front was approaching the area. One of the Coast Guard boats at the Toledo Harbor Light radioed that waves were in the eighteen foot range and rising.

Page 49: 2014 Mills Trophy Race

Two Courses were charted - a long course of 60.5 nm for I0R and PHRF with a rating 190 or less, and a shorter course of 48.25 nm for the other classes. A major factor in the unanimous decision by the TYC Board of Trustees to race was the

The Commander was also advised by one of the Coast Guard boats that waves at Colchester Reef were in the twelve foot range. The Commander also received a teletype from the 9th District Coast Guard Headquarters that, as the Commander on the scene, he had full authority over the Race. At 12:38 pm the local Commander of the Coast Guard cancelled TYC’s permit to hold the 58th running of the Mills Race. Should TYC have proceeded with the Race the Coast Guard could have fined or imprisoned the Race Committee members. The US Coast Guard also could, in future years, refuse race permits to TYC. Under the circumstances, the Board of Trustees stood behind the decision made by the US Coast Guard. Risks to the safety of sailors and yachts were just too high.

Race Series III begins in 1981 - 1999

The Mills Trophy Race was revived in 1981, under the joint sponsorship of TYC and the Storm Trysail Club, the famous East Coast organization of ocean racing sailors with many members in the Detroit River and Western Lake Erie area. Seven competitive classes were established.

strong internal leadership of the group of TYC members and the expertise of the Storm Trysail Club who’s experience and technical knowhow could create a truly competitive event.

In addition, social activities were included, before and after the race, as an important part of a successful sailing weekend. Parties and dinners at TYC before the race and a celebration at “The Bay” afterwards rounded out the weekend activities.

Cruising power yachts were reintroduced in 1981 to fill out the overall fleet that makes up the traditional Mills Race event.

Trophies, including the Commodore Mills, President Taft, Commodore Richardson, Governor Harmon Cup and nineteen others were rededicated for sixteen starting events covering two divisions and twelve classes.

In 1996, Secretary of State of Ohio, Robert Taft, now past Governor of Ohio, great-grandson of President Taft, presented the President Taft Trophy at the Mills Race awards banquet at TYC.

The third series of races for the Mills Trophy was dominated by:

BYC with 17 wins

In 1998, which celebrated the Diamond Jubilee Mills Race, winners were presented with

appropriately designed diamond rings.

Race Series IV 2000 Millennium Series

The year 2000 was the 77th challenge for the Mills Trophy and began the fourth series in this distinguished racing event. Competitive classes planned for 2009 include, PHRF, IRC, JAM, Multi-Hull and Double-Handed, One-Design, Crusing and Classics. Four courses have been established to provide a challenge for a wide range of performance handicaps and yacht classifications.Mills Course: 75.15 nm President’s Course: 38.06 nm Governor’s Course: 54.10 nm One Design Course: 30.50 nm

(For 2010, the Mills Course was reconfigured to approx. 70 miles)

These courses have been established with 15 starting guns and approximately 150 yachts entered.

For 2013, all the race courses have been reconfigured to incorporate the Bi-Centennial Battle of Lake Erie Memorial buoy.

Fifty magnificent trophies have been dedicated. The most recent trophy additions are Toledo Yacht Club Championship, Toledo Yacht Club Challenge,

Cruising and Classics Class. The Mills Trophy itself has been won by 86 different yachts representing the PHRF, IOR, IMS, and IRC classes.

During the past century the Mills Trophy Race has survived two world wars, a depression, several recessions, numerous world police actions and loss of life at sea. But the Race for the Mills Trophy has weathered the storm of time and today celebrates being one of the best premier sailing yacht races on the Great Lakes.

Yacht racing on Lake Erie has seen many magnificent sailing yachts and their crews race in heavy seas and calm waters, moonlight nights, fair winds and morning sunrises to challenge for the title of Mills Trophy Race winner.

Over the past one hundred years, from wooden hull and canvas sails of the 1900’s to gleaming fiberglass hulls and synthetic sails of the 21st century, sailing craft and crews have raced for the Mills Trophy and it remains one of the most historic and exciting events in yacht racing under sail on the Great Lakes today.

Designed for sailors to bring out the best in sailors.

Fiberglas Trophy

50

The history of the Fiberglas Trophy began over 220 years ago in London England. Key to the story is silversmith William Gould whose 1751 design resulted in the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Trophy awarded at the Invitational Mills Trophy Race beginning in 1971 at the Toledo Yacht Club.

English SilversmithWilliam Gould was a silversmith in

London England who designed and created candlesticks and chalices, many of which carried a Royal Coat of Arms inscription.

William Gould’s design found its way, over 100 years later, to Tiffany & Co. of New York, founded in1853, a renowned world creator of diamond jewelry and silver art.

First Fiberglass BoatRay Greene was born in

Brooklyn N.Y. in 1913. In 1919, the Greene family moved to Toledo Ohio.

Ray Greene receives credit for producing the first fiberglass boat, in 1948 in Toledo, Ohio.

Ray built his first boat at the age at 12, and at 16 was building wooden dinghies in the family garage which helped pay for college at Ohio State University where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical & Industrial Engineering in 1937.

WW II found Ray as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy. His assignment was as an assistant supervisor of small boat construction. During this period, Ray was involved with both the U. S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard doing experimental work with fiberglass resins for boat construction.

When Ray returned home, he knew that wooden boats were very expensive when made by hand. Ray determined that there was a market for a small less expensive mass produced daysailer.

Ray founded Ray Greene and Co. and began producing the fiberglass 16 foot Rebel in 1948. Over time, some 5000 of these one-design boats were built and many are still sailing today.

Ray Greene and Co. also introduced other daysailers that began a long line of successful fiberglass boats, including the 16’ Rebel II, 14’ Rascal, 19’ Vixen, 12’ Nipper, and 12’ Slipper.

Ray envisioned that there was a need for a weekend cabin sailboat and in 1957 commissioned Sparkman & Stephens to design the 26’ New Horizon. This was reportedly S&S’s first design for a production fiberglass boat. Introduced in

1959, the New Horizon became historically significant in the industry as the first production built auxiliary.

Glass Industry During the 1800’s, the glass

industry was developing and three major corporations were leading the field, Corning Glass Co., Owens Bottle Co., and Illinois Glass Co.

The history of these three companies that lead to the eventual development of fiberglass took place over seven decades beginning with the Owens Bottle Co. (1903) where Michael Owens developed, patented and manufactured the first Owens Automatic Bottling Machine. Prior to that, the glass bottles were made by hand and mouth blown

Illinois Glass Co. (1873) bought the first three Owens Automatic Bottle Machines from Owens Bottle Co. and built the largest glass bottle plant in the world in 1928. The merger between Illinois Glass Co. and Owens Bottle Co. resulted in the formation of the Owens-Illinois Glass Co.

The formation of the Corning Glass Co. occurred during this same 1860 period. In 1908, Corning Glass Co., established the first industrial glass research

laboratories in the United States. Their basic philosophy was to focus on technology-based products. In 1935, in conjunction with the California Institute of Technology, they produced a 200-inch telescope mirror for the Mt. Palomar Observatory while also leading the development technology for glass fiber strands.

Corning Glass Co. ultimately joined in a partnership with Owens-Illinois Glass Co, to form the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Co. in 1938, and Herold Boeschenstein became the President.

In 1971, the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Co. commissioned the Fiberglas Trophy by Tiffany & Co. from the original William Gould design.

Fiberglas Trophy Presentation

James Hearon, a VP at Owens-Corning Fiberglas, presented the Fiberglas Trophy to TYC Commodore Ed McCormick in 1971 at the Toledo Yacht Club.

In a related connection to the story, both Ray Greene, who retired in 1972, and Harold Boeschenstein, who died in 1972, were members of the Toledo Yacht Club during their careers.

The CourseIn 1971, the race for the Fiberglas

Trophy was sailed on a triangular course of approximately 68 statute miles, starting 1½ miles east of the Toledo Harbor Light, then to Green Island, Colchester Reef Light and the finish line at the Toledo Harbor Light. The Committee boat would wait at the finish line for 4 hours after the first boat in the Class “D” fleet finished. 109 boats entered the 1971 Mills Race and 27 sailed in Class “D”. Today the Fiberglas Trophy is awarded for the Best Corrected Time in PHRF B on the Mills Trophy Course.

PostscriptFrom an old silversmith

named William Gould; to Tiffany & Co., the world class jewelry and silverware fabricator; to the technology developed by three glass companies; to the evolution of the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Co.; to Ray Greene building the first fiberglass boat. Rebirth2007, marked the 25th anniversary

of the rebirth of the Invitational Mills Trophy Race after the 1978 - 1980 stand down.

The three year stand down was the result of the cancellation of the 1978 racing permit by the Commander of the U. S. Coast Guard as extremely severe weather conditions had set in on western Lake Erie on that Friday, June 12th, 1978.

Waves in the 18 foot range were reported at the Toledo Harbor Light and 12 foot waves at Colchester Reef where the fleet was headed. Advanced weather forecast had advised the Coast Guard Commander that in addition a severe weather front was headed toward western Lake Erie.

The largest yacht entered in the 1978 race was a 49 footer, and over half the fleet was under 34 feet. Several boats were in the 24 foot size.

Safety of the smaller craft was of paramount importance, resulting in the controversial cancellation of the racing permit.

By 1981 under the joint sponsorship of the Toledo Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club, the reorganization for the Mills Race competition had been accomplished.

Spear-heading the reorganization was the General Chairman Milton F. Knight and Vice Chairman Jack Bernard and a suppoting cast too numerable to mention, but greatly appreciated.
