COACHING STAFFKIM SCAVONE
Kim Ryan Scavone enters her fourth
season as the head coach of the
Meredith College softball program.
In just her second season at the
helm, Scavone garnered the 2012
USA South Coach of the Year hon-
ors after leading her team to a 26-10
overall record. The program-best
12-6 conference mark was good for
a second-place tie in regular season
league standings.
Scavone’s 2012 team raised the standard for Meredith softball with
27 wins, the most in school history. The Avenging Angels recorded
the program’s most hits with 331 and most RBI with 174. Her
pitching staff tallied a record dozen shutouts on the season and six
Avenging Angels earned All-Conference honors.
Scavone brings a wealth of experience to the Avenging Angels athlet-
ics program. She came to Meredith after serving as the first assistant
coach at Division I Fordham University. During Scavone’s tenure from
2003-05, the Rams collected their first Atlantic 10 regular season
title in 2005 and set school records with 38 wins and 308 strikeouts.
In her first season Scavone helped guide the Fordham pitching staff
to team records for earned run average, shutouts, and strikeouts.
Pitcher Sarah Kinney earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors
and followed in 2005 as the conference Pitcher of the Year.
Scavone was a four-year starter at Boston College from 2000-03.
As a freshman, she garnered the 2000 Big East Rookie of the Year
award, while also earning First Team All-Rookie and First Team
All-Big East honors. Scavone capped off her career as the Big
East Pitcher of the Year in 2003 and earned First Team All-Big East
honors as BC earned its first regular season title since 1998 and an
NCAA Tournament berth. She received a bachelor’s in English from
Boston College.
In addition to coaching softball at the collegiate level, Scavone played
and coached professionally overseas. In June 2012, Scavone was
inducted into the New York State High School Softball Hall of Fame
as a member of the charter class.

DAWN MALONE
Dawn Malone enters her fourth
year as a member of the softball
coaching staff and second as as-
sistant volleyball coach. In addition
to her team coaching duties, Malone
serves as the Avenging Angels’
certified strength and conditioning
specialist.
Malone played outfield for the Appa-
lachian State Mountaineers and was
a member of the state championship club rugby team. She earned a
bachelor of science in exercise science at ASU with a concentration
in strength and conditioning. Malone earned her specialist certifica-
tion through the National Strength and Conditioning Association at
Meredith in February 2012.
A South Carolina native, Malone coached three seasons of travel soft-
ball with the Mount Pleasant South Carolina Diamond Warriors. She
returned to her home state and earned a master of science from The

MEREDITH COLLEGE ATHLETICS PROGRAMTHE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE
Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National Col-
legiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-athletes
the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who successfully
integrate athletics and academics while experiencing all aspects of
college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level can receive aca-
demic and need-based financial assistance. The athletic department is
staffed and funded like any other department in the College.
ACADEMICS
Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by its
athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference recog-
nizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming an
Academic All-Conference team. In 2013, 54 Meredith students were
named to the team, eight of whom earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The Mer-
edith athletics program further recognizes student-athletes who earn
a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the Athletics Director’s Club and
those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with the Vice-President’s Scholar-
Athlete Award.
MEDICAL SERVICES
The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes.
The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic trainer,
Sharon Malley, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Heidi Roach. Dr. Doug
Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In
addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the UNC-Chapel
Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment
provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and
electrical stimulation.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory
Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates
community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics
of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA
South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies
for a Purpose.
WEATHERSPOON GYMNASIUMThe home to Meredith’s basketball and volleyball teams. The facility
provides up-close seating for over 500 spectators. The complex also
includes locker rooms, athletics offices, a training room, a fitness
center, a 5,000 square-foot dance studio and a six-lane, indoor
swimming pool.
MEREDITH ATHLETIC FIELD AND TRACK COMPLEXThe home to Meredith’s soccer, cross country and lacrosse teams. The
complex includes a lighted competition level track, a FieldTurf artificial
playing surface capable of supporting soccer and lacrosse games and
a storage facility. Future phases of the project will include a grandstand,
hospitality areas, support facilities, restrooms, brick arcade and locker
rooms. The cross country team uses the complex as well as the
College’s 225-acre campus and the Reedy Creek Greenway.
MEREDITH SOFTBALL COMPLEXThe home of Meredith softball has recently undergone several reno-
vations. The addition of irrigation to the Bermuda field and infield
improvements have stepped up the playing conditions to make it
one of the best fields in the area. New dugouts have also been
completed to increase comfort for the players and enhance the
game atmosphere.
MEREDITH TENNIS COMPLEXThe home of the Meredith tennis program includes six lighted tennis
courts. The courts, which were recently repaired and resurfaced, bear a
“US Open Blue” inner court surrounded by a green outer court. This new
scheme helps to heighten the visibility of the ball for players and fans.
