Q&

A

You have had two seasons under your belt as a head coach (one at Colgate, one at BC) how do you feel you have personally developed as a head coach over the past two years?

My time at Colgate compared to my time at BC, has obviously been very different. I spent two years as an assistant at Colgate and then one year as the head coach. With that said, I had three full years to get to know my girls. I knew what motivated them and how to moti-vate them, I knew which approach to take when they were failing, and I knew what type of learners they were. Also, after three years, they had a full understanding of why we did things the way we did them and why we should expect to win the Patriot League every year.

Now going into my second year at BC, I strongly believe everything is starting to click. My vision and mission for the program is clear, expectations are high, the culture of the program has changed, and everyone is on the same page. I stress to our team every day that if we do the little things correctly, we will win. Also, if we get better in some area of our game each and every day, we are heading down the right path.

I think as a coach you have to constantly want to get better. There’s no time to sit back and relax. With that said, I am constantly attending clinics, picking other coaches brains on what and how they do things, and I read a ton of books. I had the team read a great book on mental toughness called Mind Gym over Christmas break. One day a week, we are going to do some type of exercise that relates directly to the book. Not only does the book cover mental toughness, but it also covers visualization which is huge for our sport.

What are your goals for the Eagles in 2013?

In our first team meet-ing, we established our motto for the year which is “Find A Way.” The last NCAA appearance for the program came in 2003 so our focus and goal is to find a way to make it to region-als. When our backs are against the wall and adversity strikes and the pressure is on, we want to stay positive and focused, and simply find a way to win ball games.

What intangibles do Nicole and Maria bring to the table and how did those factor in to naming them the captains for this season?

Nicole and Maria were unanimously chosen by their teammates which I think speaks volumes about their leadership skills and pride for this program. We actually waited until after fall ball to vote for captains and as the days in September and October wore on, it was pretty clear these two were the leaders of the program. They both do the little things day in and day out, on the field, in the class room, and in the community. The coaching staff meets with Nicole and Maria weekly and it’s definitely a day that I look forward to. They bring energy, passion, and new ideas to this program and more than anything, they both want that NCAA regional appearance. Going back to last year, Nicole was always a vocal leader, raising the bar, and expecting more each day from her teammates. Maria was a bit different and went about her business on the field and led by example. When either speaks up during practice, a meeting, or a game, all eyes are on them and the girls really listen to what they have to say. They have trust and respect from each of their teammates which crucial for captains.

Incoming freshmen Megan Cooley, Jessie Daulton, and Stephanie Lord, what are your expectations for them this season?

Our expectations of the freshmen are always high. We want kids coming out of high school and coming to us and becoming impact players from the get go. Megan Cooley is a slapper who will spend time in left and right field and will most likely be our lead off. We will look to her to get on base early in the game and take advantage of her speed on the bases. Jessie Daulton is a very athletic infielder with Tory Speer

a great glove and knowledge of the game. We expect Jessie to spend the majority of time at third base and even some innings at second base. Stephanie Lord is a lefty pitcher who spins and moves the ball extremely well. Each of our pitchers are different in speed, pitches, and movement, which will result in all three learning to work together to win ball games.

How do you feel this team stacks up against the rest of the ACC?

We had an extremely productive and challenging fall which really helped mold and shape who we wanted to be as a team. These girls are hungry and motivated and have their eyes set on making a regional. With that said, I think we’re right there with everyone else in the ACC.

How do you see the lineup shaping up?

Right now, Maria Pandolfo will be our anchor in center field. She’s our leader out there and she makes everyone else around her better. Offensively, we want her at the plate in pressure situations, in the three or four slot. Annie Sommers looks to be strong in left field and Megan Cooley looks solid in right field. Our outfield look is completely dif-ferent than last year. Maria, Annie, and Megan all have phenomenal speed so I don’t see much dropping out there. We also have Nicole Koszowski, Ronnie Mae Ayers, and Alana DiMaso who are outstand-ing outfielders. Nicole has really improved on the offensive side and really understands her approach at the plate so I’m excited to see what she adds to our lineup.

Jessie Daulton has great reactions and a great glove over at third base. To her left will be either CJ Chirichigno or Andrea Filler. Both are highly competitive athletes that are capable of playing shortstop and also second base. As a freshman, Filler hit .300 so we will look to her again this year to be in the middle of the lineup. Chelsea Dimon, Ronnie Mae Ayers, and Alana DiMaso will compete for the job at first base.

Tory Speer spent her time in the outfield last year but has now transi-tioned to catching. She has a fantastic work ethic, knows the game and her communication with not just the pitchers, but the defense as a whole, is truly remarkable. Behind Tory Speer will be Meg Scanlon.

On the mound, we will look to Chelsea Dimon and Stephanie Lord to carry the majority of the innings for us. Again, both are extremely different pitchers which will really help us along the way. In addition to Dimon and Lord, Andrea Filler will also provide some innings of relief. Nicole D’Argento

A HISTORY The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven char-ter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws. The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Conference came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference. Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobacco, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the Univer-sity of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964. The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Poly-technic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.

Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863 and, with 3 teachers and 22 students, opened its doors on September 5, 1864. Through its first seven decades, it remained a small undergraduate institution, serving the sons of the Irish working class, and teaching theology and philosophy, Greek and Latin classics, and English and modern languages.

Originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End, the College outgrew its urban setting early in the 20th century and moved to the former Lawrence farm in then-rural Chestnut Hill, where ground was broken on June 19, 1909 for the construction of a central Recita-tion Building, later named Gasson Hall in honor of President Thomas I. Gasson, S.J., who led the relocation. The Recitation Building opened in March 1913. The three other buildings that still shape the core of the campus—St. Mary’s Hall, Devlin Hall, and Bapst Library—opened in 1917, 1924, and 1928, respectively.

Though incorporated as a university from its beginning, Boston College did not begin to fill out the dimensions of its University charter until the 1920s, with the inauguration of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Law School, and the Evening College, today the James A. Woods, S.J., College of Advancing Studies. The 1930s saw the introduction of the Graduate School of Social Work and the College of Business Administration—today the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management. The School of Nursing—named in honor of William F. Connell in 2003—and the School of Education—today named for Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch—followed in 1947 and 1952. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences first offered doctoral programs

in 1952, followed by the graduate schools of Education, Nursing, Management, and Social Work. By 1970 all undergraduate programs had become coeducational, and today women make up more than half of the University’s enrollment.

In 1974, Boston College acquired a 40-acre site, 1.5 miles from the Chestnut Hill Campus, that had been owned by Newton College of the Sacred Heart. The land is the present site of the Law School and of residence halls housing some 800 freshmen. Thirty years later, the University acquired 43 acres from the Boston Archdiocese on land adjoining the Lower Campus in Chestnut Hill. The Brighton Campus is now the site of the School of Theology and Ministry, which was formed in 2008, when the Weston Jesuit School of Theology re-affiliated with Boston College and was joined with the Institute of Religious Education and Pastoral Ministry.

In 2005, the Church in the 21st Century Initiative, which was founded in the midst of the sex abuse scandal as a catalyst and resource for en-gaging critical issues facing the Catholic Church, became a permanent center at Boston College.

In October 2008, the University launched “Light the World: the 150th Anniversary Campaign for Boston College,” setting a goal of $1.5 bil-lion to support a strategic plan that advances academic program devel-opment, faculty expansion and research, and endows undergraduate financial aid, student formation programs, capital projects, and efforts to advance Boston College as the leading global Catholic university.
