Talk about bringing a team who had not made it to a conference tournament since 2005 in your first season as head coach.

Last year was important on so many levels. Our goal was to change the culture of the program and the team mentality, and we definitely accomplished those goals. The wins, positive record and qualifying for the tournament were just added bonuses. The team deserved to qualify, and they deserved to be rewarded for all their hard work.

Obviously, Klaudia was the backbone of the team last season going undefeated in singles play. What can she do to improve upon last season’s success?

Klauida had a tremendous season last year, going undefeated in season and winning Southland Conference Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and All-Louisiana Player of the Year. However, she couldn’t have achieved all those without her teammates being there and supporting her. We set high individual goals for Klaudia this year, and she is eager to reach them. I think last year’s success made her “hungrier” for this year, which is great. Having said that, we can still improve a lot of areas in her game, starting with physically becoming a lot stronger, this is our priority for her at the moment.

Talk about the newcomers to the team this year.

This is a great freshmen class, and we are super excited to see how they compete in the team environment this spring. Julia and Sara were both accomplished junior players in Europe, and both are very experienced in competing at the highest levels. Vivien is a little less experienced, but she brings a lot of raw talent and has a lot of room to grow as a player. All three are extremely hard workers and they want to reach their maximum potential, which makes them a pleasure to work with. All three are expected to make an immediate positive impact on the team.

Who do you expect to break out of their shell and make in impact this season?

That’s a tough question because I have several names in mind. I would like this to be Anastasia’s best season thus far. She had a breakout year last year, really maturing and stepping up her game, so this year I expect more from her. There is no reason she can’t continue improving, and along with her experience and maturity really be a leader on the team.

Sara is going to have a tremendous impact on the team right away. She is a great player that already had some impressive results this fall. I think she is few adjustments away from being one of the top players in our region and conference. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but I anticipate Sara having a great season.

However, overall I think Vivien the freshman will have her breakout year. Vivien came here flying a little under the radar as far as recruiting, but we have great belief in her and her abilities. She is a great kid, hard worker and very coachable. She is such a fast learner that I believe with a little more match experience under her belt she will have the confidence to really breakthrough and flourish.

What are the team’s strengths and some things you would like to improve on this year?

We definitely need to improve our doubles. That was our weakness last year and something we have to get better at. Three freshmen on the roster requires a lot of teaching and basic doubles work, but I am confident we can improve in this area and get a strong doubles line up. The doubles point is going to be crucial for us this year.

Since we are basically a brand new team, I think we will discover our strengths as season begins and we start competing as a team. We are still in the process of finding our team identity at the moment.

I think our strengths changed from last year. Our line up is going to look completely different, and this year we are a little more talented. However, any team I will coach will first off rely on hard work and fight, and only then rely on talent. If we want to reach our goals we need to be the toughest team in the conference, the team that never say die, and I believe we will be that team.

In just her first season, Danielle Steinberg guided the McNeese State women’s tennis team to its first winning season in eight years. Steinberg, who is currently in her second season as head coach, also led the Cowgirls, who finished 13-10 in 2013, to their first 10-plus win season since 2005. Success did not stop short for Steinberg and her team however, as the Cowgirls advanced to Southland Conference Tournament play.

Steinberg’s team also received postseason accolades with Klaudia

Gawlik earning Southland Conference Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year as well as Louisiana co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. Gawlik capped off her freshman season with a perfect 21-0 record and an 8-0 record as the Cowgirls’ No. 1 player. Gawlik ended the 2013 season ranked 13th in the ITA Southern Region.

Steinberg’s knowledge of player development and recruiting is what drives her to be better in every aspect of the game. She believes in complete dedication which translates into spending a lot of time on the court with each student-athlete.

Prior to coming to McNeese, Steinberg served as an assistant head coach for Wichita State from 2010-2012. In her first year, Steinberg was met with the challenge of working with six freshmen. With four of the freshmen in their strong starting lineup, the Shockers dominated the Missouri Valley Conference going undefeated in regular season and

conference tournament play in 2011 and 2012 and advancing to the NCAA tournament both years. She also coached 11 Missouri Valley Conference individual champions while with the Shockers.

While at Wichita State, Steinberg gained recognition by her peers when she received the opportunity to coach Romina Oprandi in the WTA tour. With Steinberg’s coaching, Oprandi advanced to the third round of the Australian Open after knocking off a Top-10 WTA player. Steinberg also played a vital role in improving

Oprandi’s #88 world ranking to #61.

Before assuming her position at Wichita State, Steinberg began her coaching career at the University of Arizona, her alma mater. She served as a student-assistant where she helped plan and conducted practice and conditioning sessions as well as assisted with administrative duties such as recruiting and team travel.

As a player, Steinberg was a standout at the University of Arizona

where she was the team’s No. 1 player and team captain throughout her career. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Conference pick and was the Pac-10 Toyota Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009. Steinberg was also named to the 2006 Academic All-American team and is a three time Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Steinberg also won the ITA Arthur Ashe Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership in 2009.

A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, Steinberg graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Arizona with a BA in Social and Behavioral Science and a GPA of 3.9. She also received a MEd in Sport Management from Wichita State with a GPA of 3.9 in May 2012.

The McNeese women’s tennis team plays all its matches at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center. The complex consists of eight all-weather courts, which were resurfaced in the summer of 2012, and are located just north of the Student Recreation Center on the main campus. The complex is run in conjunction with the Student Recreation Center at McNeese. Four of the courts are lighted for play at night. Prior to the 2012 season, canopies were installed over bleachers that are between both sets of courts.

The complex was renamed the Nancy Hank Tennis center on June 14, 2010 in memory of the late Nancy Hank who was an avid tennis player and fan who took up the game in the early 1970’s. She was born in Galesville, WI and attended college at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. She was married to Harry Hank for 35 years and spent most of her adult life in Lake Charles.

The center is a great venue that is used for a variety of local, regional, and state-wide tournaments and clinics. The tennis complex and McNeese hosted the 2004 Southland Conference tennis tournament, in which the Cowgirls advanced to the championship match for the first time in school history.

In 2007, the Cowgirls hosted Lamar in the highest attended match in school history.

The center is open to the public at night.

Bruce HempHillAthletic Director

Bruce Hemphill, former associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming and assistant to the athletics director at the University of North Carolina, was named McNeese State athletic director on Aug. 15. He is the 9th athletic director in McNeese history. “It is rare to have one candidate pull head and shoulders away from all applicants so early in the search process,” McNeese President Dr. Philip Williams said. “Bruce is a unique find and meets every

criteria that we were seeking in an athletics director. “He understands the role athletics plays in the larger university environment and he understands the difficulty we face with the athletic budget and the importance of increasing revenue through private sources and auxiliary means,” Williams said. “I am deeply honored and excited to be given the responsibility to lead the athletics department at this great university,” Hemphill said. “I plan to immerse myself in the history of McNeese State University and McNeese athletics and to meet with as many people as possible to determine what is good for McNeese.” The Sulphur, La., native has 24 years administrative experience at the collegiate and high school levels. He supervised 10 of 17 programs offered at a major Division 1 university and was responsible for budget oversight, game operations, facilities, personnel, compliance, team travel and recruiting. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Louisiana State University where he was a three-year letterman in football and won All-Academic Southeast Conference honors at wide receiver. His professional experience began at LSU where he was a graduate assistant and assistant football coach. In 1984, after serving as the supervisor for health and physi-cal education for the Louisiana Department of Education, he returned to collegiate athletics and served for two years as an assistant football coach at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987 he became the recruiting coordinator at North Carolina State University. From 1989-1990 he served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at the University of South Carolina. He joined the athletics department staff at the University of North Carolina in 1990 and served eight years as assistant to the athletics director and director of recruiting. From 1999-2003 he was associate athletics director at the University of Wyoming. In 2003 he returned to North Carolina and accepted a position as athletics director at a 4A high school, the largest classification in the state.

Quotes from colleagues about Bruce Hemphill: “McNeese has hired the perfect fit in Bruce Hemphill. He is from Southwest Louisiana and he will bring the community together around McNeese athletics. Bruce understands what it takes to build a successful Division I athletics program. He has exceptional people skills and he is a great leader and motivator. He is a fundraiser and he will build support for the program. Bruce is a professional and kind of person McNeese needs. He is a terrific choice!”- Lee Moon, Director of Athletics - University of North Florida;Former Athletics Director - University of Wyoming “McNeese hit a home run with Bruce Hemphill! A great plus for Bruce is that he is from Louisiana, played football at LSU and worked at LSU and Louisiana Tech. He knows what it takes to build a successful program and he will lead the McNeese athletics department in the right direction. I have known Bruce since 1982 and our paths have crossed several times. He has held a wide range of positions in collegiate athletics from recruiting to administrative and he knows how to get things done. Bruce understands the role that athletics plays in the overall success of the university. He is a people person and he will do a great job with fundraising and moving the McNeese athletics department forward. He is without a doubt the best choice for the McNeese athletics director!”- Carl Torbush, Head Football Coach - East Tennessee State University;Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina “What a tremendous opportunity for Bruce. Bruce has a wealth of experience at a lot of different levels in athletics. He has great integrity and loyalty. I know he’s very excited about being the athletics director at McNeese, with his ties to South Louisiana this is a perfect fit.”- Mack Brown, Head Football Coach - University of Texas;Former Head Football Coach - University of North Carolina

“Bruce is an excellent choice to lead McNeese athletics. He is a ‘can do’ guy and during his time at Wyoming I was impressed with his professionalism, people skills and positive outlook. He has an effective public presence and was very engaged with fundraising. Bruce will build support for McNeese State University and McNeese athletics.”- Dr. Philip Dubois, Chancellor - University of North Carolina Charlotte;Former President - University of Wyoming
