GERmAn E-RETAilERs wAnT TO ExPAnd inTERnATiOnAl sAlEs, HERmEs suRvEy findsAsurveycarriedoutbyparcelserviceproviderHermesLogisticsGmbHshowsthatGerman e-retailerswant to expand their international business but aresceptical about the impact of the newEU consumer rights directive,whichcameintoeffectinJune.
Ahigh47%ofthesurveyedshopssaidinternationalsaleswill grow in the future. However only 11% think that thisgrowthwillbeduetothenewconsumerrightsdirective,andmorethanoneinfour(28%)believethedirectivecouldholdbackcross-bordersales.Asmuchas79%ofthee-retailerssaidtheyalreadyshipgoodsabroad.Around40%saidtheywanted to expand their own international business, while25%arestilluncertainaboutsuchmoves.
Themainreasonsforholdingbackexpansionisdeliverycharges,which71%of the shops declared as themain barrier for international shipments. Thisis followed by customs dues, complicated handling of returns and country-specificparticularities,suchaspaymentmethods.Regardingdeliveryservices,notificationbysignatureseemstobethemostimportantserviceforGermane-retailers.Multiple delivery attempts and cross-border track and trace arealmostjustasimportant,thesurveyshowed.

AmERiCAs 3d PRinTinG sET TO siGnifiCAnTly bOOsT PARCEl dElivERiEs, usPs REPORT ClAimsParceldeliveryfirmscouldexperienceasignificantboostincommercialpackagevolumesas3Dprintingbecomesmorewidespread, according to a new report commissioned bytheUSPostalServiceOfficeofInspectorGeneralthatsaidUSPScouldbenefitbyanestimatedUS$485mperyear.
Inthewhitepaper,‘IfItPrints,ItShips:3DPrintingandthePostal Service’, Christensen said 3D-printing technologywasstartingtohaveasignificantimpactontheUS$10.5tnglobalmanufacturingsector.
Itobservedthatmost3D-printedobjectswerelightweight,which it said was exactly the type of parcel the PostalService specialised in handling. The report said thistechnology promised to have profound ramifications forbusinessesallalongthesupplychain,includingUSPS,butitalsostatedsomeofthefervourwasbasedonunrealistichype.Itmaintainedthatmany3D-printedproductswouldbemanufacturedclosertowhereconsumerslive,butwillstillneedlast-miledelivery.

Tobecompleted inearly2016, theexpansionprojectwilladd13,000m²tothefacilitylocatedonSwinneaRoadinMemphisbringingitstotalareatonearly40,000m²,whichequalsanincreaseofaround30%.Withtheupgrade,UPSaims to improve processes by increasing capacity andexpandingtheuseofitsnext-generationsortingtechnology.
UPSsaid that the larger facility footprintandnewsortingtechnologywillhelphandlingincreasingvolumesinthemid-south,largelydrivenbydouble-digitgrowthine-Commercevolumes.

TnT ExPREss AusTRAliA invEsTs €59m in nEw bRisbAnE HubTNT Express is investing AU$85m (€59m) in a newregional hub nearBrisbane to expand capacity in easternAustraliaforfuturegrowth.
Construction of the new regional headquarters anddistribution centre at Redbank in Ipswich, about 40 km
eastofBrisbane,isduetostartthismonth,withcompletionexpected in June 2015. The new depot’s state-of-the-artparcelsortingtechnologywillprocess15,000parcelsperhour,upfromtheSalisburyfacility’scapacityof3,000perhour,whileachievinga20%improvementinCO2emissions.
TNTExpressQueenslandRegionalDirectorPeterGutschesaid: “The new depot is part of TNT Express’ broaderinvestmentinitsoperationsaroundAustralia,includingthecreationofnew‘superhubs’inSydneyandMelbourne,alsodueforcompletionduring2015andcomplementingthoseinotherlocationswhichhavebeenupgradedinrecentyears.

The express operator will open 23 moreServicePointsincooperationwithmajorretailerACCEACo.atACCEAstoresinTokyo,Kanagawa,OsakaandOkayama.
ThiswillgiveDHLatotalof173outletsdesignedtoenableSMEs and individuals to drop off international expresspackages. Customers can use the DHL Express Easyservice,coveringa500-gramenvelopeuptoa25-kilogrambox,forinternationalshipping.

dPd uPGRAdEs TECHnOlOGy TO sPEEd uP dElivERiEsDPDisupgradingitstechnologyinseveralEuropeanmarketstospeedupdeliveriesforbusinessandprivatecustomers.
InAustria,theparcelscarrierisintroducingnewHoneywellscanners for its more than 1,000 drivers to speed updeliveries of its 157,000 daily parcels. The Honeywell99EXscannersoffernumerousadvantagesintermsofease

In Russia, DPD has commissioned a new automatedsortationsystemforitsdistributioncentreinSt.Petersburgfrom theBeumerGroup inorder to expandcapacity, andplans to installed similar systems in otherRussiandepotsinfuture.
In Germany, the parcels carrier is introducing the ‘DPDCloud’,providingsimpleintegrationofDPDparcelshippinginto other IT systems. iTEllA AnnOunCEs nEw PARTnERsHiPsItellaandSSISchäferhavesignedaprocurementagreementon the delivery of an automated warehouse to Voutila.According to the agreement, SSI Schäfer will deliver theautomatedwarehouseandrelatedhardware,workstations,conveyorsandtheITsystem.

POCzTA POlskA invEsTs in E-COmmERCE As finAnCiAl PERfORmAnCE imPROvEsIn2013,GrupaPocztaPolskarecordedanimprovedfinancialperformance,despitelowerrevenues.Thedecreaseinthegroup’s revenueswascompensatedby reductionofcosts,whichin2013fellby4%toPLN6.3bn.ComparablegrossprofitoftheGroupreachednearlyPLN200min2013.

AccordingtotheIMRGMetaPackUKDeliveryIndexforJune2014,anexpected161monlineorderspostedcross-borderthisyearmayriseto384min2017ifcurrenttrendscontinue.Meanwhile,thetotalnumberofonlineordersdespatchedbyretailersintheUKisexpectedtotop1bnnextyearandreacharound1.3bnin2017.

This report wasestablishedandcertifiedusingtheG4methodologyoftheGlobalReportingInitiative (GRI). POST Luxembourg is the first company in Luxembourg toobtainthiscertification.
Amongst the achievements realised in 2013were: the implementation of anewCSRgovernancestructure;thelaunchofaprogrammeandteamforthepsycho-socialsupportoftheemployees;areductioninpaperconsumptionby6.3%;thedoublingofthenumberofelectricvehicles,andtheinstallationofadditionalsolarpanels.
For2014-15, thePOSTLuxembourg intendsto further develop its CSR initiatives bystrengthening the commitment of its internalandexternalstakeholdersandquantifyingtheimpactof itsactivitiesby2020,forinstanceasregardingitsenvironmentalfootprint.

MembersuseSmartWaytoolsandapproachestotrackandreduce emissions and fuel use from movement of goods.USPS will join over 3,000 SmartWay organisations thatsince 2004 have slashed their fuel costs by US$16bn,reducing foreign oil imports by 120m barrels. SmartWayPartnershipfuelsavingsalsohavecutharmfulairemissionsby51mtonnesofcarbondioxide.
By joining theSmartWayTransportPartnership, thePostalService furthers the goal to integrate environmentallyresponsiblebusinesspracticesintoourdailyoperations,saidChiefSustainabilityOfficerThomasGDay.

dHl JOins THE us EnviROnmEnTAl PROTECTiOn AGEnCy’s GREEn POwER PARTnERsHiPDHL is ranked for the first time on the US EnvironmentalProtection Agency’s list of the national top-100 users ofgreen electric power. Ranking number 27 in this leadinggroup,DHLisusinggreenpowertocoveralloftheelectricitythecompanyexpectstouseintheUSthisyear.
DHL purchases nearly 210,000 renewable energycertificates (RECs) from wind farms to offset 100% ofthe company’s expected 2014 consumption. In 2013,DHL purchased 188,000 energy certificates, offsettingapproximately90%ofitstotalelectricityconsumption.TheserenewableenergycertificateswereproducedbywindfarmsthatgeneratedelectricityfortheU.S.powergrid.Thewindfarmsreceivethecertificates,attestingtothegenerationofclean,renewableenergy.TheenergycertificatesacquiredbyDHLthisyearareequivalenttoavoidingtheCO2emissionsofmorethan30,000passengervehicles,ortheemissionsfromelectricityusedby20,000averageAmericanhomesannually,accordingtotheEnvironmentalProtectionAgency.

Therefuellingstation–withaten-tonnecryogenictank–willbeusedtosupplyfueltoUPS’s20dual-fueltractorvehicleswith amixture of diesel and biomethane. The vehicles arethenusedon longovernight journeys so that themaximumamount of diesel possible is displaced by biomethane –typicallyachievinga40%carbonemissionsreductionandverylowairqualityemissions.

The Group has added a so-called Teardrop trailer for use throughout Germany andFrance as part of its logistics solutions for its customerAirbus.Theaerodynamicformofthisteardrop-shapedtrailerdesignedbyDon-Burfeaturesacurvedroofwhichreducesairresistanceandcuttingfuelconsumptionbyupto6-10%comparedtoregularheavy-loadtrucks.Bygrowingitsgreenfleet,DeutschePostDHLnotonlyactsonitsenvironmentalresponsibility,butduetoadecreasedfueluseitsavescostspertour.

Meanwhile,UPShasstartedoperatingmoreelectrictrucksinGermanybyaddingsixconverted7.5-tonneformerdieselvehicles to its fleet at the Frankfurt Fechenheim branch.The company alreadyoperates similar electric vehicles inNorthRhineWestphalia.Basedona2010prototypecalledP80E, the 15-year-old diesel delivery vehicles have beenconvertedintopurelyelectric-poweredtrucks.

uPs dEPlOys ElECTRiC vEHiClEs in THE sTREETs Of ROTTERdAmInApril,UPSannouncedthedeploymentoffourfullyelectricvehicles(EV)deliveringpackagesinandaroundthecityofRotterdam.ThisdeploymentfollowstheintroductionofsixEVsonthestreetsofAmsterdaminOctober2013.Forthisdeployment,UPSpartneredwithFREVUE,anEU-supportedurban e-mobility initiative that seeks to demonstrate toindustry,consumersandpolicymakershowelectricfreightvehiclescanmeet thegrowingneed forsustainableurbanlogistics.
Thevehiclemodel,knownastheP80-E,hasagrossvehicleweight rating (GVW) of 6,800 kg and is powered by asingle90kwelectricmotorwith300Nmspeedtorque. Ithasarangeofupto100km.ThisoperatingradiusmakesitidealforshortroutesinurbanareaslikeRotterdam.Like
every UPS delivery vehicle in Europe, the P80-E has alimited topspeedof80km/h.Another innovationpresentintheP80-Eisakineticenergyrecoverysystem(KERS).TheKERScapturestheenergycreatedfrombrakingtobereused.Vehiclesarerechargedfromemptytofullinaroundeighthoursviaanexternalpowersupplyconnectedtotheon-board charge unit. To create this electricmodel, UPSworked with Germany-based company EFA-S (ElektroFahrzeugeSchwabenGmbH) to convert vehicles from itsexisting,diesel-poweredP80fleet.
UPS continues to enhance its fleet using a “rollinglaboratory”approach–employingitsalternative-fuelvehicle(AFV)fleetasawaytolearnabouthownewtechnologiescanbeadaptedforuseinalargedeliveryfleet.UPSisalsoworkingwithmanufacturers,governmentagenciesandnon-profit organisations toadvancenew fuel technologiesandrunpilotprojectsbeforenewvehiclesarefullydeployed.

nEw GREEn flEET PRizEd by mAyOR Of lisbOnOn 26 February, the new CTT – Correios de Portugal’stransport fleet was presented in Praça do Comércio inLisbon.Altogether,184newvehicleswillstarttocirculatethis year, of which 18 electric vehicles will help CTT toremain the largest alternative-vehicle operator in thecountry.ThemayorofLisbonwaspresentattheceremonyandprizedCTTforitscommitmenttosustainablemobilityinthecapital.The€5minvestmentwillallowforfuelsavingsintherangeof42,000litersayear,whilecarbonemissionswilldecreasemorethan1,000tonnesduringthelifetimeofthevehicles.

CTT released its Business Report 2013, featuringnew achievements in the environmental front. The fuelconsumptiondecreasedby1.5%lastyear,andforthefourthyear in a row, fuel efficiency improved, reaching now thethreshold of 9.0 liters per 100 km. Moreover, electricityconsumptiondecreased,partlyduetotheenergyefficiencyprogram,with41morebuildingsbeingenergycertifiedduringthe first quarter of the year. Another remarkable successstoryhighlightedintheBusinessReportwasthecontinuousexpansionof thegreenpostalportfolio (CorreioVerdeandDMEco),whosecombinedrevenuesincreased8%lastyear,inasharpcontrastwiththetraditionalmailportfolio.CTT’sgreenportfolioaccountsnowfor€11mperyearandrepresentsalreadyonequarteroftheoveralldirectmailbusiness.
Meanwhile, CTT’s leading role as a green champion inPortugalwas awarded by Reader’sDigestmagazinewiththe‘EnvironmentTrustedBrand2014’award.

CHROnOPOsT lAunCHEs CAmPAiGn fOR Cd And dvd RECyClinGChronoposthassetupacampaign,calledEcopick,whichisdedicatedtogivingusedCDsandDVDsanewleaseoflifethroughcollectionsatthe420shopsinChronopost’sPickme!network.Profitfromthesaleofthisrefusewillbeusedto plant trees. The project was developed in partnershipwithQuercusand isbackedby theSecretaryofState forEnvironmentandthePortugueseEnvironmentAgency.
In this campaign, Chronopost makes its 420 Pick me!pointsavailabletobeusedfreeofchargeforcollectingthis
refuse within Portugal. Profits from recycling these usedCDsandDVDswillbeused toplant trees throughout thecountry, incooperationwiththeFundaçãoFlorestaUnida,anorganisationwhichhasbeensupportedbyChronopostsince2012.FundaçãoFlorestaUnida’sactionshavealreadyenabledmorethan1,000trees tobeplantedover its30yearsofmanagingpublicareas.
CDsandDVDsaremadefrompolycarbonateplastic,whichis100%recyclable,andiscoatedwithalayerofaluminiumandalayeroflacquer.

POsTnORd dEnmARk TuRn THE islAnd Of bORnHOlm GREEnThis fall anew large-scale testwill takeplace inorder tomake the postal delivery of Bornholm completely green,byreplacingalldieselcarsandmopedsonBornholmwithelectrical.Between15and20electricalcarsandseventoeight new four-wheeled Paxsters will supplement the 13electricalbikesonthe590,000km²island.
With 50 electrical cars, 1.700 electrical bikes and 100electrical scootersPostNordDenmark is the largestownerofelectricalvehiclesinDenmarktoday.PostNordDenmarkplantoinvestinmoregreenvehiclesandconstantlyfollowthedevelopmentofelectricalvehiclessuchastrucksfuelledbyelectricityandgreengas.Since2009,PostNordDenmark–aspartofPostNord–hasreducedcarbonemissionsby16%–gettingclosertothe40%overall2020goalforPostNord.

sOlAR PAnEls in PlACE AT POsTnORd’s nEw TERminAl OuTsidE sTOCkHOlmSolar panels are now installed on the roof of PostNord’snew terminal in Rosersberg, just outside Stockholm. Theterminal is locatedby themainSwedish railroadnetwork,withtracksthatgostraightintothebuilding,whichsimplifiestheflowstransportedbyrail.AllofPostNord’srailtransportinSwedeniseco-labeledasaGoodEnvironmentalChoice.
ThesolarcellparkisoneofthebiggestinSweden,coveringanareaofabout2,000m²ontheroofofthestationatthenewterminal.Inayear,itisestimatedthatthesolarpanelswillbeabletogenerateabout550,000kWh,approximately8%oftheterminal’sannualneed.Therestoftheelectricityneedediseco-labeledasaGoodEnvironmentalChoice.
The installation of the solar panels is consistent withPostNord’sfocusonsustainablebuilding.Withsolarcells,PostNord can save energy, reduce the cost for energyconsumptionandprotecttheenvironment.RosersbergwillmeettherequirementsforGreenBuilding,anEUinitiativeforenergyefficiencyintheconstructionandpropertysector.

sEuR RECEivEs THE EwwR 2013 AwARd fOR iTs invOlvEmEnT in wAsTE REduCTiOnAtagalaceremonyon22MayinRome,theawardcommitteefortheEuropeanWeekforWasteReduction2014(EWWR)selected GeoPost subsidiary SEUR’s communicationcampaign to encourage participation in two of its biggest
projects, ‘Bottle caps for a new life’ and ‘Bikes for life’,as thewinners in the ‘Business/Industry’ category. TheseawardsaimtorecognisecampaignsimplementedduringtheEuropeanWeek forWasteReduction in2013 inorder toraisepublicawarenessoftheneedtoreducewasteanditsimpactontheenvironment.
Launched in2011, ‘Bottlecaps foranew life’ isaprojectwiththeaimoffinancingmedicalcostsnotcoveredbysocialsecurity for children with serious illnesses, or to enableaccess to orthopaedic treatments for those that cannotaffordit,bycollectingbottlecaps.Theprojecthasalreadyhelped 74 children, through the collection of over 2,628tonnesofbottlecaps,foratotalof€620,880.Theinitiativehasalsopreventedover3,492tonnesofCO2 frombeingreleasedintotheenvironment.‘Bikesforlife’isasolidarityandsustainabilityprogrammeseekingtorepairbicycles intrainingworkshopsforpeoplewithdisabilities.Thebikesarethendonatedtodisadvantagedpeopleandgroups.
SEUR has been active in other fields as well, with forinstance developing a new range of more eco-friendly,more secure and more economical packaging, settingup an internalweb page allowing employees to buy, sell,exchange, hire and donate various items,with the aim ofreducingwastebygivingthemasecondlife,andlaunchingseveral awareness campaigns to promote commitment tosustainabilityamongstemployees,customersandsuppliers,aswellassocietyatlarge.

Todevelopacarbon-neutralcampaign,Correosmeasuresthe environmental impact of a product throughout itslifecycle.Tothisend,thecompanyhasdevelopedatooltocalculate thecarbon footprintofaspecificcampaignoraspecific customer, enabling them to make their productscarbonneutral.
Forthispurpose,Correosusesadualstrategy.Onetheonehand,thecompanyensuresaminimalenvironmentalimpactoftheiractivitiesbyreducingtheircarbonfootprintthroughitsEnergyEfficiencyPlan,whichincludestheimplementationofenergysavingmeasures inbuildings,routeoptimisationprograms, awards to employees more committed to theenergy efficiency and eco-driving training, among otherinitiatives. TnT ExPREss sCOOPs CARbOn TRusT AwARdsTNT Express Services UK & Ireland was awarded theCarbonTrustcertificatesforexcellentwastemanagement.
TNTExpressUK&IrelandwasawardedtheCarbonTrustWaste Standard as the first operator in the UK transportandlogisticsindustryasitsbothdivisionsTNTExpressandTNTBusinessSolutionsimprovedtheirwastemanagementin 2012 and2013. The company attributed the award toits employees’ efforts in correctly disposing rubbish andvariousothermeasures implementedacross thebusiness.Withthecontinuousenvironmentalmeasures,TNTreducedthe amount ofwaste sent to landfill bymore than3,200tonnesbetween2011and2013andincreasedtheamountofwastesentforrecyclingbyover2,000tonnes.
The companywas additionally honouredwith theCarbonTrustStandardforathirdyearinarowforreducingitsCO2emissionsby4.9%duringthesameperiod.TNTattainedtheCarbonTrustStandardcertificationthankstoreducingthe carbon emissions – both on the road and around its70depots,contactcentresandadministrative locations–savingmorethan8,000tonnesofCO2ayear.
