    CONTENTS

  • Love thy neighbor.

Many, if not all, of us have heard this before. We probably agree with it (the fact that youre in this book is a great indicator!), and this message permeates throughout Trident United Way.

    So what does it mean?

For Trident United Way, it means that we continuously evolve to be a pillar supporting our communitys best efforts. It means that we connect resources to brilliant organizations, convene institutions Business, Government, Educational, Professional, and Nonprofit towards mutually beneficial ends, and address complex problems with intricate and innovative solutions. In doing so, we aim to not only invest in promising programs and practices, but to accelerate their impact.

The tri-county is our neighbor. We love it dearly.

We know you do too, and we hope you enjoy learning exactly who your neighbors are in the Trident United Way community.

Thank you for investing in Trident United Way. Your support enables us to create measurable transformation in our community, a community that is vibrant, growing, and diverse.

  • 5MYRNA & EDGAR BATIZ EDUCATIONMyrna Batiz is a loving mother of three who has hopes and dreams for each of her children.

Myrna and her youngest child, Edgar, participated in the Family Literacy Program (FLP) funded through Trident United Way. FLP provides parents with the tools to prepare their children for school, manage discipline issues, and promote literacy development through time spent playing and learning together.

Myrna comes every month with her children and it has been very good for her, said Martha Gomez, a patient navigator for FLP.

Because of the FLP, Edgar (5), is now able to read, identify colors and shapes, and communicate with his mother. Myrna feels confident that he is ready to enter kindergarten and succeed in school.

Through Trident United Ways partnership with MUSC Childrens Care, which operates the FLP, the health needs of families are being met and Lowcountry children are starting school prepared to learn.

THE HOWELL FAMILY GIVEIn philanthropy, as in business and home life, its a family affair for brothers Scott and Travis Howell, partners in Ground Swell Capital. They and their wives, Valerie and Shayna, are leadership donors because they grew up with an ethos of sharing.

We were already giving to some of the organizations that Trident United Way works with, said Shayna. We like what Trident United Way does being the convener and creating networks so that each organization isnt reinventing the wheel.

Adds Valerie, who served on a volunteer community investment committee, Now that were parents, we see things were able to offer our children and I want to make sure other children in our community have these opportunities.

The two couples and their children live in Folly Beach and value giving locally. We grew up here, said Scott. The fact that Trident United Way has a local focus means a lot to us. And we like the results-based community approach.

HENRY WALLACE FINANCIAL STABILITYFollowing military service in Bangkok, Thailand, Henry Wallace returned to the states and fell into an unhealthy cycle of addiction. He was living on the streets, struggling with a drug and alcohol problem, and diagnosed with cancer.

He felt there was no hope, but today, he says, Im a prime example of your donations at work. Youve got the living proof here.

Through Trident United Way, Henry was connected to financial supports and a program funded by Trident United Way at the Lowcountry Food Bank, which taught him cooking techniques and basic skills in the kitchen. He not only learned how to cook but, also realized he could tackle things he had never tried before.

With his newfound confidence, Henry is now off the streets and living healthy in a place of his own in West Ashley. He also sought medical treatment and is now living cancer-free.

Henry hopes to share his confidence with others by volunteering at the VA Hospital as a patient escort and by mentoring younger students in the cooking program. Giving back is important because someone gave to me and took a chance on me. Now I can give back to the community, explains Henry.

LISA GETHARD HEALTHWhen Lisa Gethards devastating pain and sickness became more than she could manage, she and her husband Scott had to quit their jobs to take care of her. I had a high paying job and never thought something like this would happen to me Lisa said. It could happen to anyone.

Lisas recovery became the couples top priority. The threat of homelessness was becoming more real every day because she required constant care. Scott and Lisa turned to Trident United Way and its partners East Cooper Community Outreach and the Lowcountry Food Bank for both financial assistance and support with Lisas health.

Lisa participated in a cooking class where she learned meal planning, budgeting and nutrition. She took yogic breathing classes that taught her exercises to lower blood pressure, de-stress and manage pain. She is now more independent, healthy and active, which has allowed Scott to return to work and restore their life on Daniel Island.

MICHELLE ARREDONDO FINANCIAL STABILITYMichelle Arredondo, Executive Director of Helping Hands of Goose Creek, struggled with the process of applying for investments from Trident United Way. Taking the step to outcomes and measures was intimidating. I fought it with every breath I took.

She reluctantly persisted because the $40,000 investment was roughly 40% of her budget. It turned out to be much more than that. By developing a logic model that described how we would help our clients move to the point where they dont need us anymore, we had a template for other grants, Arredondo said. We were able to use that tool to attract $32,000 in new grants.

Helping Hands now has a new van, a revamped warehouse, and a new cooler and freezer to hold fresh, nutritious produce. Each has increased Helping Hands capacity and efficiency in helping Berkeley County residents in need move up the ladder to financial stability. The Benefit Bank of SC, a strategic partner of Trident United Way, works with Helping Hands to sign up clients for eligible benefits. And everyone who shops for food at the pantry takes a money management course taught by staff at Sun Trust Bank. We see Helping Hands as the first stop on the road to self-sufficiency, Arredondo said.

TASHA, DESTINY & ZINESIA EDUCATIONLike many parents, Tasha Chandler drives her children to school every morning. But unlike most, shes headed to class too. Tasha, a mother of two daughters attending Chicora Elementary School of Communications, completed her GED at Chicora in just a few months through Trident United Ways Links to Success initiative.

Today, Tasha is a Certified Nursing Assistant and is halfway through a two year program for Occupational Therapy. Tasha is committed to providing a better life for her daughters and herself.

Tashas daughters, Destiny (10) and ZiNesia (7), are also benefiting from Links to Success by participating in programs that address academic, financial, and health issues facing students and their families. Theyve helped Destiny advance from struggling student to award-winner in academics and citizenship.

CHERYL LOVE VOLUNTEERCheryl Love became a 2-1-1 Hotline volunteer by accident a wonderful accident.

A longtime supporter of United Way of Greater Cincinnati, where her husband served as Board Chair, Cheryl went straight to the Trident United Way to seek volunteer opportunities here. She was ready to share her talents and experience as a former teacher, HR manager, radio talk show host, Realtor, and loyal volunteer for a food bank and the arts. I went to tuw.org, clicked the button and had an interview with staff. Little did I know it was an interview for 2-1-1, she laughs.

Six years later, Cheryl is a stalwart volunteer, helping people find the resources they need. When her husband died, the 2-1-1 people became my support network because my family wasnt here. Cheryl loves the 2-1-1 training and the ability to connect with parts of the community she wouldnt ordinarily know about. We can be very isolated from what the needs really are. But I get to hear from people who really need the services.

CONWAY SAYLOR ADVOCATEConway Saylor, a clinical pediatric psychologist, professor of psychology and director of Service Learning at The Citadels Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics, has been a longtime donor of Trident United Way. It wasnt until this past year, though, that she fully understood the deep strategy underpinning the organizations community impact efforts.

The focus on target areas (education, financial stability and health) is consistent with what Ive been learning professionally about what works on complex issues, she said. In my role as director of service learning, I try to find best practices and the metrics that determine whether our efforts in civic engagement are making an impact. Then I discovered that Trident United Way was also engaged in focused efforts supported by metrics.

Dr. Saylor is helping Trident United Way and its partners develop metrics assessing the impact of civic engagement. Civic engagement is more than volunteering, she said. Its about owning the whole issue.

SAVAISHA EDUCATIONSix years ago, the high school graduation rate for the four area school districts was at 64.5%. Today, its 78% in part because of partnerships like the ones between Communities In Schools of Charleston (CIS) and Trident United Ways Links to Success initiative.

Against the odds, Savaisha Steed-Boykin reached for her goals, graduated high school and has completed her freshman year at Winthrop University.

Born to a single, working, teen mother, Savaisha began receiving services during her 7th grade year at Haut Gap Middle School on Johns Island, just as Trident United Ways Links to Success program was being implemented. CIS provided Savaisha with preventative health education, after school involvement, and the tools to achieve her goal of high school graduation.

THE YOUNG FAMILY HEALTHDana was told that her little girl, GeNovia, had Down syndrome at one week old. With two other children in her family, Dana was grateful for all of the help that MUSC Childrens Care provided. Through the hospitals partnership with Trident United Way, she was referred to the Family Literacy Program (FLP) to prepare her 5 year old daughter, DNala, for school.

The FLP provides families assistance with health and educational needs.

They can learn what is required for school entrance so when they get to school, theyre ready, they start on time and theyre excited about learning, said Dr. Henry Lemon, the pediatrician at MUSC Childrens Care. This promotes readiness at first grade, third grade, high school and even graduation.

DNala and her mother have been given the tools to prepare her for school through their sessions at the FLP. She now knows her alphabet and is beginning to read.

They make sure health and education come first, said Dana. You always have to put the child first. Literacy has to come first for them to excel in school.

TUW knows that health and education are intertwined. Programs like the FLP are preparing hundreds of children like DNala for a bright and successful future.

WILLIS AND CHARLISA PUGH GIVEWillis and Charlisa Pugh, and their children Cara (18), William (16), and Warren (5), are the kinds of active community investors who give with their heads, hearts and hands, Willis says. He and Charlisa, Alabama natives and University of Alabama graduates, both grew up in a tradition of giving back. Our parents taught us that only one decision to the left or right separates all of us from being in need, he says.

For the Pughs, who confer with their kids in their Mt. Pleasant home about their annual giving plan, contributing to their community is more than check writing. That is one piece, but we believe you have to be there physically for people too, says Charlisa.

As Plant Manager at Cummins, Inc., Willis has been instrumental in creating a culture of community service in the workplace as well. The mission of Trident United Way really speaks to me because its outcome-based and innovative: and our family really buys into the three pillars of education, financial stability and health.

Acting as role models with their children, in the workplace and in their community, Willis and Charlisa Pugh are leaders in bold community change.

SHANTONE FINANCIAL STABILITYWhen you meet Shantone, you might learn that he is 36 years old, enjoys working outdoors and is in the process of becoming who hes supposed to be in life. What you might not realize is that his journey to get to where he is today was not an easy one.

Shantone had a desire to contribute to society and turn his life around following a stint in prison. After his release in November, he sought out self-help information and employment opportunities at the Berkeley Prosperity Center, a partnership of Trident United Way, Goodwill Industries, Inc., and Family Services, Inc.

At the beginning of his job search, he struggled to find work due to his criminal record. Shantone met with a counselor at the Prosperity Center and expressed his interest in working outdoors.

The counselor was able to point him in the right direction and Shantone secured a job as a landscaper in Mount Pleasant just a few days after their meeting. I heard the joy in his voice when he called to say he was hired, said his counselor, Claritha Wade. Alston Wilkes Society helped him purchase work boots and pants, and Goodwill bought him a rain suit and work gloves. Shantone now has a desire to pay it forward and make a difference in the lives of others by being a mentor to local youth.

SHANA PINKSTON GIVEShana Pinkston has not always been a fan of Trident United Way. For years, she felt she was being asked to contribute without being told what Trident United Way was doing with her donation. Just a few weeks after joining the staff at MeadWestvaco, which has a robust partnership with Trident United Way, she asked to know more.

I was invited to learn about Trident United Way and I liked the answers, Shana says. What really resonated with me is that money isnt just passed out to partner programs; there are actual metrics and criteria they have to meet and Trident United Way supports those programs along the way. Im a fan of holding people accountable.

Shana became a leadership donor and attended United Ways National Womens Leadership Council gathering in Charleston last year. Today, she is providing fresh leadership of her own by recruiting co-workers to invest in their community through Trident United Way. Shana has long cared about her community, and volunteering her time and money to the organizations she feels passionate about. She appreciates having a strategic partner that shares her focus on results.

  • DON KASSING INDIVIDUAL COMMUNITY BUILDER OF THE YEARDon Kassing pours his many talents into strengthening the Lowcountry community and serves as one of the leading individuals in philanthropic service in the tri-county area. Because of his great efforts, Kassing earned Trident United Ways 2013 Community Builder of the Year Award.

I love this community and feel blessed to live here, he said. Its the reason I feel obligated to give back.

Last year, Kassing led Trident United Ways Day of Caring, the largest community volunteering day in the Lowcountry. He has served as the Trident United Way campaign chair and board chair. He is also a member of the board of trustees at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville.

CUMMINS INC. CORPORATE COMMUNITY BUILDER OF THE YEARThis years Corporate Community Builder of the Year is Cummins, Inc., a company whose corporate ethos sounds a lot like Trident United Ways mission. Community service is such an integral part of the corporate culture that employees are evaluated on how much volunteering they do.

In fact, Cummins has a rich association with North Charleston Elementary School, to whom they provide mentors during the school year.

For Cummins, community involvement has always been in the forefront. We believe a strong community leads ultimately to a stronger company, says Willis Pugh, plant manager at the Cummins Turbo Technologies division in Ladson.

JANIAH WASHINGTON EDUCATIONWhen Janiah was in the fourth grade, she was having behavioral problems and was reading at the second grade level at Harleyville-Ridgeville Elementary School. Trident United Ways Links to Success initiative provided academic and non-academic support to Janiah. In two years, her school performance improved significantly. By sixth grade, she was reading at a seventh grade level and no longer had behavioral issues. By bringing together multiple partners inside her school, Links to Success helped Janiah improve her MAP scores an astounding 25 points, or three grade levels, said Todd Martin, Links Coordinator. She typifies the kind of difference a well-structured initiative can make in a childs life.

Through these community learning centers, Trident United Way partners with all three local school districts and diverse community service partners to contribute to school turn-around and an on-time graduation rate of 88% by 2020.
