In February we highlighted winter sports in the region with a four part series as well as a 3 part series on the Heroin epidemic that has become prevalent in Franklin County. In May and June our “On The Road” series continued as we looked at the issues of Hampshire County. Filmed at the Yiddish Book Center on the campus of Hampshire College interviews included people discussing the issues that matter most to that region.

Our 5th season of Connecting Point began in October with a Veterans Coming Home Series that included partnerships with local Veteran agencies and various interviews with local war veterans who are struggling to integrate back into main stream society. As Schools Match Wits

Now in its historic 53nd year of continuous broadcast, As Schools Match Wits is a treasured western New England institution. Last year was WGBY’s 8th year of co-production and partnering with Westfield State University on this important community institution. As Schools Match Wits is an academic quiz show competition open to both public and private high schools throughout western New England (including MA, CT & VT), and is one of the longest-running shows of its kind in the nation. ASMW showcases the best and brightest high school students that western NE has to offer, allowing them to shine in a venue which celebrates learning.

Open to both public and private high school students throughout western Massachusetts, northern Connecticut and southern Vermont, ASMW is one of the longest-running shows of its kind in the nation. Each season, up to 50 schools compete in qualifying matches to see who can earn the most points. The top eight highest-scoring teams of the season meet in playoff matches to determine the season’s champion and winner of the Collamore Cup. The trophy is named for ASMW creator and Westfield State College alumnus Leonard Collamore, who launched the series in 1961.

The show is sponsored in-part by the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Broadcast weekly during the school year on WGBY, the script for each episode of ASMW is tied to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education curriculum frameworks. Questions are written by WSU faculty and students, and WSU’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Elizabeth Preston, serves as its judge. Congratulations to Mt. Greylock Regional High School 2013-2014 ASMW Champions.

The Address

Funded in part by a grant from WETA, WGBY collected more than 80 recitations of the Gettysburg Address as part of a national project connected to the Ken Burns documentary, “The Address.” Our advance screening of 30 minutes of the film was part of an entire Sunday afternoon (1 – 6 pm) of activities that took place at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site http://www.nps.gov/spar/index.htm and at the adjacent Springfield Technical Community College. The events included a Civil War tour of the armory conducted by Park Rangers; a talk on African Americans in Springfield during the Civil War by the Director of the Pan African Historical Museum of Springfield; video recordings of Gettysburg Address recitations done by WGBY’s Latino Youth Media Institute personnel; a musical program by the Community Music School of Springfield to introduce the screening; an introduction to the preview by our General Manager, Rus Peotter, followed by a 30-minute preview; and concluding with a group reading of the Gettysburg Address. Our preview was a segment from the middle of the film that told the story of two students. By park ranger count, more than 400 people visited the Armory. A little more than 100 people attended the screening. Around 30 people did recitations or readings that day – some of them in Civil War uniform and some in U.S. Park Ranger uniform. Some of the participating rangers had been stationed at Gettysburg.

Western Massachusetts Home & Garden Show, March 27-30

WGBY occupied a large booth at the show, engaging as many as 18,000 people over a four-day period. We shared space with various local nonprofit partners, including the Bilingual Veterans Association. Activities included taping show attendees reciting the Gettysburg Address, screening various PBS programs (such as Downton Abbey), and providing books and stickers for children.

Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade

For the 12th year, WGBY broadcast this western Mass tradition live both on-air and streaming from the WGBY web site to viewers around the globe.

STORIES OF IMPACT

A Long Row in Fertile GroundWGBY produced and directed 40 minute documentary about agriculture in western New England. The documentary traces New England’s a history as the cradle of American agriculture. The region’s productive land attracted Native Americans and Colonists alike. Those families created a shared culture of innovation and collaboration that has helped western New England’s agricultural legacy persist for more than three centuries despite waves of migration, technology, and economic uncertainty. The documentary premiered in July 9, followed by a free public screening and panel discussion at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA, in October.

Veterans Coming Home ProjectFunded in part by a grant from PBS, working with our primary partners, the VA Central and Western MA offices, Soldier On, and the Bilingual Veterans Outreach Center of Springfield, WGBY created 10 field and studio based stories focusing on the many challenges facing our returning Veterans. The topics focused on were homelessness and housing, military sexual trauma, PTSD, social integration, education and employment. The stories aired as part of our magazine format program Connecting Point during the months of October and November. All clips appeared on-line as part of WGBY’s localized version of the Veterans Coming Home website as well as the Connecting Point website.

Big Ideas for Little KidsA WGBY-produced 30-minute documentary about a classroom strategy that introduces philosophy to second graders using picture books: Directed by Emmy-winning Julie Akeret this film features a new classroom strategy, formulated by Tom Wartenberg of Mount Holyoke College, wherein picture books introduce students to philosophy and are a catalysts for active discussion. The students learn to listen to each other, to clearly formulate their own opinions, and to defend those opinions. They learn to trust their own ideas, build confidence, and develop a sense of community. These classes boost literacy and foster a love of learning. The documentary premiered on WGBY on November 3, and was subsequently selected by APT for distribution by member stations.

“The students were filled with pride today and several choral teachers have asked if they can play it in their classrooms for their students! The program was lovely and well done. Beautifully edited and pieced together.Like a beautiful choral patchwork.”

Anita CooperChoral director Amherst Regional High School

“I thought the Veteran’s Coming Home segment was a real special project that addressed the issues and topics that most Veterans are struggling with today. As a Veteran my feelings about how the staff were so passionate about the project was great to see and I think it made the Veterans they interacted with want to open up during the interviews because they could see the passion behind the project. My hats off to the staff for putting their all into a project that will reach so many Veterans in need. Great Job!”
