Meet Cavell. He has the most contagious smile that you will ever see. He is the father of four daughters and is a hard-working man.

Cavell also had a drug problem. He struggled with drugs for almost thirty years before he realized that he needed help. He had tried to quit on his own so many times, but each time went back to drugs and felt even more defeated. He was the victim of his drug addiction and couldn’t get out.

Finally, he knew that he needed help so he went to a rehab program and then came to the City Rescue Mission. Cavell joined the Men’s Ministry Recovery Program and has been at the Mission for several

months. He is now doing better than ever.

Not only has Cavell gained victory over his drug addiction, he has also regained his faith and has learned better life skills. Cavell originally gave his life to Christ when he was a young child,

however, worry and pain caused him to stray from God and turn to drugs. Here at the Mission, Cavell has reconnected with God. He affectionately

describes his time here at the Mission as a “refresher course.” Through all of this Cavell could say, “I know that God has always had my back. He knew what He was doing even when I was messing up and making unwise decisions.”

Cavell has also learned how to get along better with people here at the Mission. Cavell always

At a recent conference, I bought a book of Bible verses that references James Allen’s little book from the early 1900s called As A Man Thinketh. Allen’s book was based on Proverbs 23:7: “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (NKJV). The point of the book is simple: Our thoughts are the most important thing about us. All that we achieve or fail to achieve is the direct result of our thinking. Our thoughts are like seeds that produce a crop – if good, they are ready for a fruitful harvest, or if bad – they may lead to a path of stunted growth and even destruction.

As you read Cavell’s story in this issue, you can see that our ministry

focus on the renewing of the mind – using the inspired and unfailing messages of the Bible, awoke a need for a “refresher course” in Christian living. Cavell’s time spent in our Men’s Recovery Program unveiled a fresh intelligence on how he should act, think, feel and speak. We remain convinced that the Bible is a powerful tool that can displace years of bad seeds growing in an untended garden inside Cavell’s life and mind.

We feel blessed to share Cavell’s story and realize that the Lord directed his path to our door, so that new seeds and fresh thinking could be planted into a recommitted life. We are grateful to the many people who make this ministry effort possible to sow into even more lives this year. Thank you for your help in planting seeds for a new life in Christ!

believed that he was a giving person at his core, but his trials and struggles with drugs had caused him to become calloused and harsh towards others. Now he is more patient and tolerant.

Having to live in community with other men has taught Cavell how to interact with others in positive ways and made him want to strive to be a better person. He says, “We talk about refining gold or making diamonds, but it’s going to hurt. There’s pressure and fire, especially when there are a lot of impurities, but it ultimately makes something beautiful.” While he knows that he is not impurity-free, he knows that he has something much more beautiful now because of the experiences that he has gone through.

After he graduates from the Mission’s Recovery Program he hopes to get his truck driver’s license and look for a job and an apartment. His biggest concern is that he wants to be careful and act wisely as he moves from here so that he won’t end up back at square one. However, he is confident that he can move on from here and be a better member of society. Because of his experience at the Mission, he has gone from being a victim of drugs to being a victor in Christ.

Faith and FamilyHow To Earn a “Noble” Prize

Many hardworking individuals save their whole lives so they can leave something

valuable for their children. This is noble and right to do. But how much sweeter would it be

to also leave your values for the next generation as well? Here are two simple (but powerful) ways

you can do just that:• Writeletterstoyourlovedones. This is a

great way to communicate what is near and dear to your heart – them! You can share wisdom for life, encouragement, healing words or even something you may have had difficulty saying during your lifetime.

• IncludeaministryyouloveliketheCityRescueMissioninyourWill. This communicates that you value the Lord’s work

and the lives that will be reached through the ministry. It could even inspire the your loved ones to get involved.

In “Living Life to Leave a Legacy,” Emile Wolfaardt said “A reputation is what men say about you on your tombstone; Legacy is what your children will live with for the rest of their lives.” And he is right. By making sure that your life is punctuated with a statement about what matters most to you, you can ensure that the legacy you leave behind is one with eternal focus that will impact lives for years to come.
