In 1971 Mel Alexander and theCentennial Model T Club of Omahainvited two representatives of eachOmaha-area car club to a meetingto discuss issues of mutual interest.In 1972 the meetings expanded toinclude car clubs from Lincoln andFremont.

From that beginning, the EasternNebraska/Western Iowa Car Coun-cil (ENWICC) was formed. It nowincludes over 60 clubs from as faraway as Kearney and West Point,Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, andRock Port, Missouri. Club affili-ations range from cars and trucksof the early 1900’s to the newestvehicles on the market includingstock, modified, customs, streetrods, trucks, classics and lead sleds.

Over the years the Council hasaddressed legislative matters suchas year-of-manufacture licenseplates, antique auto taxation issues,

laws concerning abandoned carsand historic vehicle license plates.It actively networks with othercouncils throughout the country tokeep up-to-date with hobby issuesand concerns.

The Council sponsors two ac-tivities each year. The first is theROCKY MANGINELLI MEMO-RIAL SWAP MEET held the firstSunday of March at the LancasterEvent Center in Lincoln.

2014 marks the 41st Anniversaryof the swap meet. At this swapmeet, vendors from across thecountry sell auto-related parts andmemorabilia. Admission to theswap meet is food or a monetarydonation to the Lincoln Area FoodBank. This is one of the largestone-day food drives in Lincoln.

group prints about 10,000 “AreaAuto Calendar of Events andResource Directories” which theCouncil distributes free at thespring swap meet. The Directoryincludes the area clubs, local andnational events, and local advertis-ers that members of the automobilecommunity are interested in. TheCouncil and the area automobileenthusiasts appreciate the “book.”

Each spring the Council awardsfive scholarships in the amount of$300.00 each to students studyingin automotive-related fields. Thisamount is doubled to $600.00 ifthe student attends the McPhersonCollege Automotive AutomobileRestoration program.

Each year at Christmas-time, theCouncil gives deserving charities$250.00 each. In 2013 the recipi-ents were the Tangier Shrine Trans-

portation Fund in Omaha, NorthWest Missouri Children’s AdvocacyCenter, Matt Talbot Kitchen in Lin-coln, Lincoln City Mission, and theSiena/Francis House in Omaha.

The rest of the profits are distrib-uted to the car clubs that workedsupporting the Swap Meet. Manyof these Clubs give to charities oftheir choosing.

The second event that the CarCouncil sponsors is the ANNUALBILLYATES MEMORIAL FALLFOLIAGE TOUR. This will beheld on October 5, 2014. This yeargroups from Nebraska, Iowa, andMissouri will meet at WaubonsieState Park in Iowa for a picniclunch and fellowship.

It is easy to see that ENWICCtruly is “By Hobbyists, For Hobby-ists.”

THANK YOUAll who have helped ENWICC reach the$100,000 and 100,000 pounds milestone.

hobby, and to make legislative authorities and the general public aware of theexistence of the hobby and the intrinsic value of preserving a part of automotivehistory.To negotiate needful reforms and consolidation of insurance protection at the

lowest levels for all clubs and their affiliated members.To perform such other promotional and community service programs as will

reflect to the credit and success of the automotive hobby.

Regular meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month alternatingbetween Omaha and Lincoln. Officers and representatives of member organiza-tions are asked to sign in before the meeting, and guests are always welcome.Meetings begin at 7:30 PM - many arrive early for dinner.

EASTERN NEBRASKA/WESTERN IOWA CAR COUNCIL’SPAUL HIGH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Eastern Nebraska/Western Iowa Car Council (ENWICC) is an association ofover 60 car clubs that actively promotes the special interest motor restoration,collection, and maintenance hobby among its varied functions. In an effort tofurther this goal, we attempt to get the younger generations involved. One of theways we do this is through the Paul High Memorial Scholarship program. Weaward these scholarships annually and over the life of the program have awardedover 60 scholarships locally. Normally, these go to students in the vocationalpaths of study, but they are not limited to those efforts. We have awardedscholarships to individuals pursuing a four year degree and, in fact haveautomotive engineers among our alumni.

EligibilityThe Paul High Memorial Scholarship is open to anyone who is planning onenrolling or is currently enrolled in an automotive technology program at anaccredited trade school, community college, or university. First considerationwill be given toward an applicant who may have ties to an organized car club thatis a member of the ENWICC. Consideration may also be given to an individualwho is pursuing the 2nd year of the program and has already been awarded anENWICC scholarship for the first year.All High School Graduates are eligible.No discrimination is made due to race, color, or sex.

Distribution of FormsAll High Schools from the area in which a Car Council member club resides is toreceive application forms. Any interested individual can request a form from theENWICC Scholarship Committee, or the form can be downloaded from the CarCouncil’s website, www.enwicc.com .

Submission of ApplicationApplications must be received by the ENWICC Scholarship Committee no laterthan April 15th. We ask that applications be typed if possible and that a resumesheet also be included, if one is available.Applications are to be mailed to:

ENWICC Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box 772, Bellevue, NE 68005-0772.

The Scholarship Committee will review and select the winners. Notification ofwinners will be made no later thanMay 15th.Up to four Scholarships will be awarded for the amount of $300.00 each.The amount will be doubled if there is an individual who is accepted for the AutoRestoration Program at McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.Attention to our deadline dates must be urged. Every year we receive applicationsafter the cutoff dates. Because of our meeting dates and selection committeemeetings we must adhere strictly to the cutoff date of April 15th each year.

Payment of ScholarshipThe ENWICC Treasurer will pay the School when proof of enrollment isprovided to the ENWICC Scholarship Committee.

We will be opening the Ashland Historical Society Museum(Fall 2014) in the former Ashland (Carnegie) Public Librarybuilding (circa 1911) listed on the NRHP; upon completionof the Ashland Community Resource Center and Library.

The Omaha-Lincoln-Denver Trans-Continental (OLD)[1911],later known as the Detroit-Lincoln-Denver Route(DLD), NE 7, US 38 [1926]; then becoming US 6 [1931-1937]: the Longest Transcontinental Route in the United

States. The AHS & other sponsoring members of www.Route6Tour.com began a project to “sign” the old along theentire 3,652 miles of those routes from Provincetown MA to

Long Beach CA; of all the 14 states the route travels through.

The goals of theNE and IA Route 6 Tourist Association chapters is to identify all historic portions of the 374 miles of U.S. 6between Lamar/Imperial NE throughout Nebraska to Omaha and from Council Bluffs IA eastward to Davenport IA. The placing of

‘Historic U.S. 6’ signage has begun in Davenport IA in earnest. The goals to complete the states Historic US 6 ‘signing’:IA signage is on-track for 2014 - the NE signage along the route has begun, with the goal of completion 2015.

We believe this project will help all the communities located along the 3,652 miles of the Grand Old Highway (the GAR)by preserving the coast-to-coast integrity of the original alignment, of the early 1900’s forward.
