A Letter from Chairman Hamlin!!

In response to the increasing discontent over the Town of Webb Union Free School District’s Dress Code policies, the Hamlin and Stefanko Administrative

Accountability Commission (HSAAC) commissioned this survey in order to gauge support for an attempt to change the policies. !

!!We collected responses over a period of one week and one day (March 25, 2014 -

April 2, 2014) through the online surveying website SurveyMonkey. In all, we received 82 responses from students in Grades 7-12. Respondents from both genders and all

four years of high school took part in the survey, giving us a wide-range of opinions regarding the policies from various different maturity levels and viewpoints. All

responses were validated through various secure and reliable methods to ensure that the results we have posted are as accurate as possible.!

!The HSAAC will use the results of this survey to help enhance our efforts in

changing a policy that a majority of the students believe is unnecessary and distracting to the educational process. We believe that real change can be made here, and we hope that the administration of the Town of Webb Union Free School District

will continue and increase the open dialogue we have been seeing regarding this issue in recent weeks.!

Gender Makeup!!

The chart and table below showcase the gender makeup of the survey. As you can see, female students outweighed the male students in responsiveness by nearly thirty

percentage points. This result was expected due to the seemingly large gender gap in enthusiasm for Dress Code changes that have been observed during the recent

movements dedicated to forcing the aforementioned changes.!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

!!Opinion on Yoga Pants Restrictions!

!As expected, the yoga pants restriction included in the Dress Code was extremely unpopular amongst students. Of the respondents, 85% responded that they believed that the yoga pants

restriction is “unnecessary”. In comparison, only 6% replied that they thought a restriction was necessary. However, 9% stated that they had no opinion on the restrictions. Even when

combining those who believed that the restrictions were not unnecessary and those who had no opinion on the matter, that makes up for only 15% of respondents compared to the 85%

who believed that the restriction was in fact unnecessary. !

Comments from Respondents on Yoga Pants!!

“I think the only negative effect that yoga pants has on us is that it stirs up drama because we have to be taken out of class and made to change, this

disrupts class and 9/10 times we have to change into our gym shorts which are no better if not worse that yoga pants.”!

-Respondent #25!!!“Yoga pants are a problem because they apparently show off your "figure".

Tight jeans do the same exact thing.”!-Respondent #26!!!

“Taking us out of class to tell us what we are wearing is disruptive to others. What is disruptive is taking us away from learning and telling us

to go home and change.”!-Respondent #58!!!

Student Targeting!!

Nothing is worse for a student than to believe they are being unfairly targeted for anything, especially their attire. But in this school, many students do feel as if they

have been targeted are are being targeted for their clothing choices more than others. Now this may just be teenagers being teenagers, but the idea that students even feel

targeted is a real problem that must be addressed.!

Self Expression!!

The ability to express oneself freely without persecution from anyone is a key tenant in the anti-bullying and individualistic movements we are seeing in today’s education system. The phrase “be yourself” is getting thrown around all the time in assemblies, on posters and by educators these days, and many youth consider clothing the ultimate way to be themselves.

But in an extreme case of mixed messaging, schools are banning and extremely popular piece of clothing and in effect hurting a student’s ability to express themselves. !

Overview!!

Overall, we can see from these results that students of the Town of Webb Union Free School District are united against the restrictive yoga pants policies put in place by

our school. This year, however, the fight for change seems to be coming to a head, and we are elated to see a unified movement for changing our school for the better.!!

It is also fantastic to see the School Administration so open to the idea of changing the Dress Code, and we commend those in the Administration for starting this open dialogue. We at the HSAAC hope that this discussion continues and that serious

changes are made.!!!Comments from Respondents!

!“I think some people are targeted more than others, but not specifically me.”!

-Respondent #24!!“Girls say yoga pants are comfy and I will take their word. It's hard to learn while adjusting yourself because you are wearing uncomfortable clothes.”!

-Respondent #43!!“If yoga pants were allowed I believe that people would be more academically involved in school because not only would they be able to express themselves

better but they will be comfortable…”!-Respondent #76!

!“Yoga pants are an article of clothing that can be worn, mainly, for comfort but

also can be worn with a tunic for style. The ban against yoga pants is unnecessary and if it was lifted my days would be a thousand times better.”!

-Respondent #19!
