Runoff election set for July 22By Haisten [email protected]

MARIETTA — Cobb voters will decide a host of primary winners during a July 22 runoff. On the Republican ticket, Jack Kingston and David Perdue square off in the race of U.S. Senate. The winner faces Democrat Michelle Nunn on Nov. 4.

The other Republican primary races pit Bob Barr against Barry Loudermilk for Congressional District 11, Bill Byrne against Bob Weatherford for Cobb County Commission District 1, Tim Stultz against Susan Thayer for Cobb school board District 2 and Mike Buck against Richard Woods for Georgia school superintendent.

On the Democratic ticket, Alicia Thomas Morgan faces Valarie Wilson in the state school superintendent race.

There is one nonpartisan race to be decided as well, with Ann Harris facing Juanita Stedman for a Cobb Superior Court judgeship.

Early voting begins June 30 and runs from 8 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Cobb Board of Elections, located at 736 Whitlock Avenue in Marietta.

“Every vote is important and every office is important,” said Janine Eveler, director of the Cobb board of elections.

It isn’t necessary to have voted in the primary if you want to vote in the runoff, however, the voter registration deadline for the runoff already has passed.

Eveler predicted low voter turnout, which she said is typical in runoffs.

Staff/Kelly J. HuffCobb County Elections Director Janine Eveler talks with prep center clerk supervisor Nancy Johnston, who is preparing elec-tion materials for the distribution to the polling places for the July 22 runoff election. Only 658 voting machines, a little more than half of the last election, will leave the center located on Cobb Parkway in Kennesaw due to expected lower voter turnout.

Bob Weatherford (R)Age: 65 ● Business: Development, JAT Con-sulting Kennesaw; Instructor Georgia Motor-cycle Safety Program, former Acworth City Alderman ● Spouse’s name: Lori ● Children: four; one grandchild ● Residence: Acworth ● Education: BA Math Physics Minor; Hunting-don College, Montgomery, Al ● Campaign website: www.bobweatherford.com.

VISION STATEMENT: Cobb has seen a lot of success in the last few years. That success hasn’t just happened by accident and it won’t just continue. It requires having the right leadership. Now is not the time to return to the failed and divisive leadership of the past. We must elect a leader with a record we can trust — someone who will work collaboratively with others instead of picking fights and just saying no.

I have a conservative record of cutting taxes, balancing budgets, enhancing public safety and promoting smart economic growth.

I also have years of real world business experience where I managed employees, and was responsible for a nearly $30 million budget.

I am running for County Commission to continue my record and experience to stand up for the interests of District 1 and ensure that Cobb’s success continues.

I have the experience and conservative record you can trust to balance the county budget, protect taxpayers and lower taxes. I will continue to support public safety, and I will promote the highest quality economic growth that follows the land use plan and protects homeowners.

More importantly, I will actually listen to the people and work collaboratively with others. You can trust that I won’t be a rubber stamp for anyone and will always do what’s right for the people I serve.

Bill Byrne (R)Age: 72 ● Job: Byrne Design Group, land-scape architect, former county chairman ● Spouse’s name: Babe Atkins-Byrne ● Chil-dren: Kelly, Shannon, Teri; grandchildren: Winnie and Braiden ● Residence: Marietta ● Education: Syracuse University, Bache-lor of Landscape Architecture; U.S. Marine Corps veteran ● Campaign website: BillByrneforCommissioner.com

VISION STATEMENT: Public safety: The primary responsibility of government, at all levels, must always be public safety. I will focus on returning Cobb County as 1. The highest paid. 2. The bestequipped. 3. The most professionally trained to attract and keep the very best to serve and protect all Cobb County residents. Cobb County demands the best, and the Board of Commissioners must provide and retain the best. Economic Development: I am committed to working with the cities of Acworth, Kennesaw and Marietta to bring new companies and business to those urban centers of Cobb County. I will also work with the business associations: 1. Acworth Business Association 2. Kennesaw Business Association. 3. Marietta Business Association. 4. West Cobb Business Association to implement and support their programs to expand their business opportunities and create new job opportunities in Cobb County.

Age: 35 • Job: IT Director and Analyst, Emory University • Spouse’s name: Jodi • Children: 2 children, Mackenzie and Sean • Residence: Mableton • Education: Georgia Tech, BS Electrical Engineering • Campaign website: www.timstultz.com

VISION STATEMENT: It has been a privilege to represent the Post 2 community on the Cobb County School Board for the past 3 years. I have worked to make sure that parents and students are presented with choices in how to develop the best plan of success, including supporting the implementation of the county’s first career academy, supporting charter schools, and working with the board to develop policies that strengthen the academic performance of all schools.

I have made it a priority to make sure that the interests of the Cobb taxpayers are represented during Board discussions. I was the conservative voice who said yes to returning excess SPLOST II collections back to the taxpayers as described by law, who fought to make sure SPLOST referendums would be held during November elections, and who worked to balance the district budget by not raising taxes or pushing deficit problems to the next year.

The district still faces many challenges, including closing the achievement gap, and developing a long term balanced budget. I believe elected leaders are sent to office to solve the problems that are presented, and I will continue to offer solid ideas based on conservative principle to address these challenges.

Susan Thayer (R)Age: 65 • Job: Retired Educator and Educational Consultant • Spouse’s name: Ed Thayer • Children/grandchildren: Two step-children: Matthew Thayer, 26, and Kimberly Thayer, 22 • Residence: Smyrna • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies and Education (University of Southern Mississippi; Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Guidance and Counseling (University of West Georgia); Specialist of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Guidance and Counseling (University of West Georgia) • Campaign website: susanthayerforschools.org

VISION STATEMENT: As a school board member, I will use my background and experience in education to make data-driven, informed decisions which are in the best interest of all students. At all times, my focus will remain on learning. To enhance the learning environment, my goals will be to make fiscally sound decisions; provide a rigorous, challenging curriculum for all students; improve facilities; hire and retain highly qualified teachers; strengthen the parent-school partnership and maintain school safety.

While serving system-wide, I will be a strong advocate for addressing the unique problems faced by Post 2 schools. As school board members, we need to remember that equitable is not always equal, and we want all students to have the same opportunity for success. To be a strong voice for Post 2, I will need to remain visible in and accessible to my community and will need to never forget that I am there to represent their interests.

* The winner will face Democrat Derrick Crump in November

** The winner will face Democrat Kenya Pierre in November

Juanita StedmanAge: 59 Job: Judge Juvenile Court of Cobb County • Spouse: Hugh Stedman • Children: Molly Stedman Metz and Emily Stedman • Residence: Marietta • Education: BS in Education from University of Georgia; Master of Education from Georgia State University; Juris Doctorate from Georgia State University • Campaign website: judgestedmanforsuperiorcourt.com

VISION STATEMENT: Cobb County has a tradition of strong judges who are “tough on crime,” but being an effective judge means more than that. While my experience in trying and sentencing murderers, rapists and child-molesters as an assisting superior court judge is important, it only represents 30% of the Superior Court’s work. Fortunately, I have the other 70% of the case load covered with years of expertise too. My opponent does not.

Relevant court experience needs to apply to the 50% of the Superior Court’s work in domestic cases: divorce, child

custody, support, alimony, division of assets and adoption involving life-changing decisions for all parties. Another 20% of

the Superior Court’s work involves civil litigation: property disputes, personal injury, and business disputes.

My opponent has no experience in these important areas ... NO experience with 70% of the Superior Court’s work.

The private sector would never consider a job candidate with no experience and only 30% of a position’s required skill-set. Voters should not expect lower standards in government.

I am the ONLY candidate with experience sitting as a Superior Court judge and accomplished with the full range of the court’s work. I am also the ONLY candidate who has sentenced felons and able to perform the complete job from Day 1. Choose the candidate with the most relevant experience.

You deserve a Superior Court Judge ready to serve ... experienced and trusted. Please give me your confi dence and your vote on July 22. Thank you.

Ann HarrisAge: 50 • Job: Senior Assistant District Attorney, Cobb District Attorney’s Offi ce • Spouse’s Name: Jim Harris • Residence: Smyrna • Education: Auburn University, B.S., fi nance, with honors; Vanderbilt University, Juris Doctor • Campaign website: www.annharrisforjudge.com

VISION STATEMENT: I am grateful to have received the most votes in the primary from so many people who trust me serve as your next judge. As a Senior Assistant District Attorney, my sworn duty for 19 years has been to seek justice in Superior Court.

Seeking justice means working tirelessly to protect our families. I have successfully prosecuted murderers, armed robbers, rapists and drug traffi ckers. I tried the fi rst case of felony elder abuse in Georgia, and was instrumental in drafting the fi rst human traffi cking law. I have obtained from a jury the most serious punishment the law allows. I am the only judicial candidate endorsed by the Fraternal Order of Police and by District Attorney Vic Reynolds.

Seeking justice means recognizing those cases warranting compassion. For non-violent offenders, I have recommended alternatives to prison, including drug treatment and mental health court.

Seeking justice means having the courage to make the right decisions and the hard decisions, and to hold people accountable. It means working to be fair to all, treating them with respect and dignity. It means honoring the rights of the accused and the victim. And it means respecting the rule of law.

I have the experience that matters, and the values you trust to serve as your judge.

VISION STATEMENT:• Smart Growth: Keep Acworth charming and vibrant, more housing options for young families, maintain our unique qualities while we grow, attract businesses and developers who fit our community.• Fiscally Responsible Resource Management: keep taxes low. This can only happen if we make the right fiscal decisions, plan ahead — be proactive not reactive — have long-term as well as short-term plans; better use of technology to connect City Hall, businesses, developers, and you. We have unique resources here. They must be used wisely to keep us financially sound.• Quality of Life: ensure the next generation has a great city where they can work, live, shop, eat, and play, encourage a healthy community through safe walkways and bike paths, celebrate who we are — it’s the people who make Acworth wonderfully unique.

Brett North (R)Age: 55 • Job: clinic manager, Life University, Marietta • Spouse’s name: Ann (34 years) • Children/ grandchildren: None • Residence: Acworth • Education: High School Education • Campaign website: www.brettnorth.com

VISION STATEMENT: My vision for Acworth is a quaint city with a vibrant economy. The direct result of quality growth, quality development and quality of life; a great city in which to live, work and play. She would be a city with low taxes, fiscal responsibility and property values that are elevated and stabilized by these characteristics. She sounds a lot like the Acworth Ann and I have enjoyed living in for years.Over the last nine years, I have volunteered on the Acworth Planning and Zoning Board, supporting the quality of growth and development that has created the quality of life we all enjoy today. I also served on the Committee that updated the Acworth Comprehensive Development Plan in 2007, and I represented Acworth on the Stakeholders Steering Committee that evaluated and made recommendations on the transportation needs of Cobb County for the next 25 years. No other candidate in the Acworth Alderman race brings to the table the experience that I bring. I believe this volunteer experience, my 30-plus years of business management and small business ownership makes me the best candidate for the job. I’m “all in!” If the citizens choose me as their Alderman, I’ll be ready to serve on day one.

Barry Loudermilk (R)Age: 50 • Job: president, Innovative Network Systems, Inc. • Spouse’s name: Desiree • Children/grandchildren: Travis, Christiana, Michael and daughter-in-law, Sarah. • Residence: Cassville • Education: B.S. in Occupational Education/Business, Wayland Baptist University, Plainview, Texas (1992), Minor in Business Information Technology; Associate Degree in Telecommunications Technologies, United States Air Force Community College, Colorado Springs, Colorado (1987) • Campaign website: www.StandwithBarry.com

VISION STATEMENT: My father served in WWII; he saw action on the beaches of Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. He gave me one rule for life, NEVER COMPLAIN. He would say, complaining never accomplishes anything. If there’s something you don’t like, you have two choices, stay silent or do something about it.

I took my father’s advice, and instead of just complaining about the direction my state government was headed, I took my experience as a husband, father, veteran, small business owner, employee and employer to the state capitol. There I served in both the State House and Senate, where I consistently advanced the principles of less government, lower taxes, pro-family and pro-freedom. Because of my consistent stance on these principles, I became known as one of the foremost conservative leaders in Georgia. While we face many unprecedented challenges brought on by big government, overwhelming debt and a loss of our traditional family values, I still believe in the American dream, and I am confident we can take our nation back.

Why am I running for Congress? Well, that’s simple ... because our children and grandchildren deserve better than what we are passing on to them.

Bob Barr (R)Age: 65 • Job: Practicing Attorney • Spouse: Jeri • Children/grandchildren: Children (4) / Grandchildren (8) • Residence: Smyrna • Education: Georgetown Law School — J.D. (1977); George Washington University — M.A., International Affairs (1972); University of Southern California — B.A., International Relations (1970) • Campaign website: www.barrcongress.comVISION STATEMENT: I am running to return to the U.S. House because I love this country too much to watch the damage being done in Washington from outside the arena. I have been in the arena before. I have fought for a balanced budget, tax reduction, and meaningful regulatory reform; and I was part of the team than succeeded in achieving those results. It can be done.

Taxpayers are fed up with the mess in Washington, and they want a member of Congress with the track record and backbone to actually move the conservative agenda forward — to shrink the size, scope, cost, and power of the government. Once in Congress, I will work to: (1) protect jobs at Dobbins ARB and Lockheed-Martin; (2) limit, defund, and repeal Obamacare; (3) cut the debt; and (4) streamline government. I have done this before and will do it again.

I plan to again serve on The Judiciary, Financial Services, and Government Reform and Oversight Committees, beginning January 2015 with my prior years of seniority intact. That is how I will move our conservative agenda forward, as opposed to those who just talk about it.

Alisha Thomas Morgan (D)Age: 35 • Job: state representative • Children: One daughter, 7 • Residence: Austell • Education: Spelman College, Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and Drama • Campaign website: www.alishaforgakids.com

VISION STATEMENT: I am the proud mother of a 2nd-grader in Cobb County Public Schools. I am running for state school superintendent because I believe that all of Georgia’s children deserve a quality education, regardless of the social or fi nancial challenges that they may face. Our children represent our hopes and dreams for the future, and they deserve educational opportunities that have no geographic, racial or economic boundaries. All parents deserve the assurance that their children are in safe and secure schools that foster success at every level. Communities throughout our state deserve schools that enrich their communities with educational culture, innovation and technology, engagement opportunities and sustained stability. As superintendent, I will fi ght to ensure that the state is leveraging every resource to ensure that our public schools work for all children, with an effective teacher in every classroom and a strong principal leading every school. As a mom and a proven leader with demonstrated success in crafting statewide education policy, I have the skill, experience and relationships to effectively lead our state department of education. I will work tirelessly to guarantee that all of Georgia’s children are getting the high-quality education they deserve.

Valerie Wilson (D)Age: 55 • Job: Executive director, Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, a private, nonprofi t organization dedicated to fostering support for the largest urban revitalization project in America. • Spouse’s name: Carter Wilson • Children: Son, Nicholas Wilson • Residence: Decatur • Education: Clark College; completed graduate studies in public administration at Troy State University. • Campaign website: www.valforeducation.com

VISION STATEMENT: I seek to serve the children of Georgia as the state school superintendent for the same reason that led me to get involved in my son’s elementary school classroom, and later, my local school board and the Georgia School Boards Association. I am driven by a singular focus on doing what is best for students. Today more than ever, Georgia

is at a turning point between investing in public education and totally dismantling it. I believe it’s the moral imperative of every Georgian who values education to step up and do what

is right by our children and our teachers. That’s why I’m offering my experience and knowledge to help create a world-class education

system in this state. As state school superintendent, I will develop a strategy to ensure all of Georgia’s children have access to high quality education, while fi ghting aggressively to restore a budget to fund it. I will support our teachers so they can provide the best education possible for

our children. And I will stand against the privatization of the school system through vouchers and for-profi t charter schools. Our Constitution guarantees adequate public education for all children. As state school superintendent, I will make good on that promise.

Mike Buck (R)Age: 53 ● Job: Chief Academic Offi cer, GA Dept. of Education ● Spouse: Joy ● Children: Anna, Christina and Dylan ● Residence: Rome ● Education: Ed.D. Educational Leadership, UGA ● Campaign Website: www.BuckforSuperintendent.com

VISION STATEMENT: The Georgia School Boards Association, in conjunction with the Georgia School Superintendents Association, worked diligently to create a vision for public education in our great state. Their stated vision is: Public education in Georgia will provide all children an equitable and excellent education that prepares them for college, career and life. This is very consistent with my personal vision for where we need to take education in Georgia. I am a parent of three children attending public school. I want the same things for them as I do for every other student in our state. I want a safe and nurturing learning environment for all students. I want all students to receive a fi rst-class education from talented teachers dedicated to maximizing their potential. I want all students to be nurtured in the curriculum of life, where they learn simple yet vitally important concepts such as the appropriate usage of words like please, thank you, and I am sorry. Think about how much brighter our future will be when we work together to make all these things a reality in Georgia. As your next state superintendent, I will work with all stakeholders to make this vision come true!

Richard Woods (R)Age: 51 ● Job: Educator, Small Business Owner ● Spouse’s name: Lisha Woods (30 year educator) ● Children: None ● Residence: Tifton ● Education: Kennesaw State University, B.S. Secondary Education, Social Studies; Valdosta State University, Masters of Education, Educational Leadership ● Campaign website: www. woodsforsuper.com

VISION STATEMENT: My primary goal as Georgia’s next superintendent is to establish a student-centered, fi scally responsible educational department that operates to serve our local school systems and assist them in providing our students with the skill set to have the following opportunities upon graduation:1. Continue learning via technical college, university system, military, and/or business training. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor.

2. Become innovative thinkers with the skills and a work ethic necessary to gain employment to become future business

leaders.3. Be independent, informed and engaged citizens.

4. Make fi nancial and personal decisions that allow them to be independent from and not dependent on government.I will not outsource control of Georgia’s education to Washington D.C. and special interest groups. All of Georgia’s educational partners will be brought together to craft an educational system

tailored for Georgia.

VISION STATEMENT: I’m not a politician. Instead, I’ve spent the last 40 years in private enterprise helping companies, large and small, grow their businesses and create jobs. Eventually, I worked my way up to become CEO of the Reebok athletic brand and Dollar General stores. I’ve never run for public office before now, but I’m truly concerned about the direction of our country. We are facing a very real fiscal crisis due to irresponsible government policies which have led to a crushing federal debt and a struggling economy. I believe it will take a political outsider with the right experience to help solve the problems career politicians have created. My goal is to inspire and lead other members of Congress to focus on solving our immediate debt crisis and helping get our economy back on track. I also believe we need term limits to end the Washington mentality that exists today where career politicians are more worried about their own reelection than solving our nation’s pressing problems. If we want different results from Washington, I believe we have to send a different type of person to Washington.

Jack Kingston (R)Age: 59 • Job: (Former) Vice President, Palmer & Cay/ Carswell; U.S. Congressman • Spouse’s name: Libby • Children/grandchildren: Betsy (Trey), John, Ann, & Jim • Residence: Savannah • Education: University of Georgia, A.B. (Economics) • Campaign website: www.JackKingston.org

VISION STATEMENT: The American Dream is at peril. An overspending, intrusive government is sapping away our liberties and taking away opportunity. I am worried our children and grandchildren will not know the same America we know and love. After fighting for countless pieces of good, reform-minded legislation to pass the House only to die on Harry Reid’s desk, I am convinced the battleground for the heart of our country is in the United States Senate. I am taking my fight there in order to change the status quo. I have proposed the American Renewal Initiative which can serve as a rallying point to unite our country in order to balance the budget, bolster our national security, and encourage private sector job creation. Its six points include: cutting wasteful and duplicative deficit spending; securing peace through strength; repealing job-killing regulatory overreach; harnessing America’s energy potential; promoting work over welfare; and reforming our tax code to make it simpler, fairer, and more competitive. Implementing these six points will preserve and strengthen the American Dream for generations to come. These can unite our country and overcome the politics of division that dominates Washington.
