Watermark:
The paper you see as the insert of this 40th anniversary issue of the UWSP Paper Science Foundation’s annual report is very special.
This paper was produced on campus by the students of the Paper Science & Engineering program. Many of the materials and furnish to make the paper were donated by sponsoring companies. One of our recent graduates, Lindsey Hoffman, oversaw its production as she is responsible for paper machine operations in the Mead Witter Process Engineering Laboratory.
The beautiful Paper Science Foundation 40th anniversary watermark comes from a dandy roll donated by the J.J. Plank Corporation of Neenah, Wisconsin. They are ardent supporters of our foundation. This special watermark has both raised and indented features. Hold it to the light and take a close look at it. Truly a work of art by the craftsmen at J.J. Plank, “thank you.”

...back in the early years...
Forty years ago, champions of the paper industry and the UWSP forged a unique team with the purpose supporting and growing students with an interest in science and technology specific to the art of papermaking. These leaders would go on to first build a rigorous academic program, then a foundation to support it. The UWSP Paper Science Foundation would grow and thrive over the years thanks to the strong support and guidance of industry and alumni leaders. Four paper companies lead the way with ‘big’ contributions of $1500 each in 1974: Consolidated Papers, ITT-Rayonier, Nekoosa Paper, and Nicolet Paper. A total of 28 paper and allied industry companies contributed a total of $27,500 in those initial three years. That nest egg has grown to over $2,500,000 today and has provided $2,000,000 in scholarships and program support over the past forty years. We ARE the UWSP Paper Science Foundation and count ourselves among the leading paper university foundations in the world.
We look with pride at this campus’s proud 120 year history, celebrated in the summer of 2014. That is indeed a long time to be providing continuous service to the students of Wisconsin. Please recognize that for 1/3 of those years, the UWSP Paper Science Foundation has been here on campus, sustaining our engineering students and faculty.
The Paper Science Foundation has and will continue to serve the great state of Wisconsin’s paper industry and the nation with the finest engineers and leaders.

What can we do to prepare for the “silver tsunami”?
Greetings on this 40th anniversary of the UWSP Paper Science Foundation. With a stabilizing and improving paper industry in Wisconsin, the foundation looks forward to continuing our support of students and faculty in the Paper Science & Engineering program at UWSP. Those of us in industry know what a key role these bright and well educated engineers play in our future success. They are vital.
Engineers with the special talents that we have seen in the graduates from UWSP over the past forty years, will continue to be in high demand in Wisconsin and the nation. The ‘silver tsunami’, the baby boomer generation retirement timeframe, is upon us and the PS&E program at UWSP, with the continuing support of the Paper Science Foundation, will help stem the tide.
As president of the Foundation, I encourage corporate sponsors, especially those that visit our campus and hire our graduates, to ensure that the ‘pipeline’ will stay full by supporting student scholarships via grants and endowments. The Paper Science Foundation is well positioned to facilitate recruiting students to become engineers in the paper and allied industries. As our latest advertising piece suggests, “Let us help you become an engineer at UWSP”. I ask that industry and alumni help the Paper Science Foundation make that happen with significant contributions on this, our 40th anniversary. Thank you.
Russ Wanke, CEO, Expera Specialty SolutionsUWSP Paper Science Class of 1985
UWSP Paper Science Foundation:The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Paper Science Foundation was organized in 1973 and chartered in 1974 by the Paper Science Department staff, along with industrial and business leaders. The purpose of the Foundation was to form a tax-exempt, non-profit organization to promote and receive philanthropic gifts to support the Paper Science Program at UWSP (now Paper Science and Engineering). The management of the Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors composed of up to twenty-two (22) voting members, each elected for a three-year term. The Board, along with the Foundation staff, also works to enhance the image and presence of the Paper Science Program to incoming applicants, alumni, friends, corporations, and the general public. Private gifts and donations raised by the Foundation traditionally support scholarships, academic programs, facility research, pilot equipment, and other areas that are not, or cannot be supported from state appropriations.
Foundation Objectives:Encourage students of high scholastic achievement and leadership potential to enroll in the Paper Science and Engineering program.
Provide financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants and loans to Paper Science and Engineering majors.
Provide opportunity for alumni and interested leaders of the pulp, paper and allied industries to strengthen the Paper Science and Engineering educational program at UWSP.
Further communication between UWSP Paper Science and Engineering faculty and industry leaders in the development of curriculum and, through technical advice and financial funding, support the faculty in undertaking new fields of instruction.
Further technical service and applied research of importance to the industry through special grants and fellowships.

Keynote address by Dr. Michael Kocurek via video presentation.
“The 1974 President’s Report”
19
For the first time in our 40 year history at the Paper Science Foundation, we had a ‘high-tech’ video presentation of our keynote address in place of a ‘live’ speaker. It was fitting to ask Dr. Michael Kocurek, the Paper Science Department’s first chair, to be a part of our 40th anniversary celebration. It was disappointing for us to hear that he was planning to leave the country in September, however, as a polished presenter, Doc enthusiastically agreed to prepare a video of his keynote as an alternative. It turned out great!
As a fundraiser, which should be of particular interest to any of the several hundred of graduates that enjoyed Doc’s lectures first hand, the P.S.F. will be soon be offering a CD of his keynote. Based on the reaction of those in attendance at our September 18th banquet, you will surely enjoy and learn a great deal from what Doc has to say.
Stay tuned for information on the release of the enhanced CD as we have additional archival footage and photos that we would like to add to it. This will be a collectors’ must have for any UWSP Paper program graduate…and a great way to support your Paper Science Foundation.
