2014 - A YEAR OF CHANGE
Bob Curtis, Lakeville Area Chamber 2014 Chair
Bob Curtis Agency Farmers Insurance
It has been my pleasure to serve as your 2014 Lakeville
Chamber Chair. A year ago, I had the idea in my head that
2014 was going to be a year of guiding our Chamber to the
next level of success…A Faster, Better and Smarter Chamber!
The idea was for the Chamber board to provide the volunteers,
committees and staff with added tools to become more
efficient and successful.
The year started out on a good note with March producing a successful Landscape and
Home show. As I walked around thanking the exhibitors, I was amazing to hear how many
members have been coming back for over 5 years – a testament to a successful committee
and staff!
All was going fine, membership was increasing, and a much needed spring was right
around the corner. Then March reared its ugly head and ended like a lion as Linda Rynda
our Membership Director of 10 years resigned. With membership sales being a vital part
of our organizations financial well-being, we quickly got onboard to hire a replacement.
Then in mid-June Todd Bornhauser, our Chamber President of 14 years, announced his
resignation come July. Now the Chamber board had to replace two key positions and keep
running smoothly. So much, or so I thought, for the ultimate goal of Faster, Better and
Smarter!
I began receiving phone calls and e-mails from many Chamber members offering their
support and encouragement during this stressful time. As personally witnessed, the
Chamber’s success during this time of change was due to the commitment, strength and
character of our members and remaining staff Jeanne Hutter and Michele Shea. The
interviewing process involved dozens of members and many thanks go out to each of you
for the unexpected time and effort put into the whole process of hiring Tim Roche as
Chamber President and Penny Zurn as Membership Director.
Our hiring was not complete, as two additional part-time positions were added for 2015.
Please join me in welcoming Shelley Jans as Event Coordinator, and Bob Finke to head up
our very successful YEA Program in 2015.
Through all the change our membership remained strong in 2014 with over 420 members.
We enjoyed success with the Golf Classic, Fall Gala, and Foundation Bowling Tournament.
Our support for luncheons, after hours, morning brews and ribbon cuttings continued.
While the year took a detour in how I thought it would go, I am very happy on how it
ended with refreshing ideas and renewed enthusiasm. I truly believe we have a Better,
Faster and Smarter Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors
Bureau. Thanks for a fun and exciting year as your Chamber chair, it is a year I won’t
forget.

CHAMBER OVERVIEW The Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce has been representing the interests of the
local business community serving as an advocate and a resource for 66 years. As a
catalyst, the Chamber is a vehicle through which professional people and businesses
work for the common good of the community. Our membership agrees that by
working together, we play a leading role in improving the local business climate,
recruiting and retaining businesses and industry, attracting visitors to the area and
using our combined influence for legislation that support these goals.
The annual report highlights the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention
& Visitors Bureau accomplishments and demonstrates the commitment of the
membership, board, committees and staff.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR 2014 The Chamber hosted 12 Morning Business Brews, 8 Networking After Hours, 4 Women
of the Lakeville Chamber Luncheons, 8 General Membership Luncheons, an Annual
Membership Meeting & Holiday Dinner, a Tourism Luncheon, 5 education seminars,
4 major fundraising events, 5 ribbon-cuttings, 1 open house and a board retreat.
Member awards included, Business Person of the Year, Ambassador of the Year and 3
Hospitality STAR Awards. All of these activities are possible due to the dedication of
the volunteers and the commitment of our boards and staff.
▪ 68 new chamber members ▪ 715 new resident welcome packets
▪ 420 members at year end ▪ 36 local media coverage
With a member retention rate of 84% and over 60 members with longevity of 10 years
and more, the Chamber has been fortunate to experience stable memberships since
2011. For six years our memberships have hovered between 410 and 440. This year
the Chamber has set an aggressive goal to reach 500 members by December 31, 2015.
FINANCIAL REPORT
The organization runs an annual budget of over $500,000, with the Chamber of
Commerce generating $340,000 in revenue this year and the Convention & Visitors
Bureau generating $165,000 in revenue. The Chamber of Commerce’s funds are
generated from our membership investors, advertising opportunities, and events. The
Convention & Visitors Bureau is funded by a 3% dedicated lodging tax collected from
visitors by Lakeville hotels. Both entities budgets have been profitable for many years
and 2014 was equally profitable. All financial statements are public information and
available to members upon request.
The recent IRS 501 C3 recognized Chamber Foundation has been raising funds for
years for our education programs. With the new tax designation, the Foundation is
now a separate organization and has very ambitious goals to raise funds to allow the
Chamber to bring back the YEA! Program in 2015, and continue to assist in helping the
schools educate our workforce of the future.

COMMITTEE ACHIEVEMENTS
BUSINESS & EDUCATION
Chaired by Steve Lorenz of Discovery Financial, this
committee continues to expand their partnership
with the school district including Career Jamboree
for juniors, College Financial Planning Night, Back to
School Day, and Challenge to Change/Promise Week.
The Chamber assisted in 700 senior high exit
interviews and hosted “Teacher Appreciation Visits”
bringing breakfast to all public & private schools in
Lakeville during the school year.
ISD-194 Superintendent, Dr. Lisa Snyder conducted
September’s State of the Schools address along with
her staff at that time the Chamber awarded $100 camp fees to 6 high school students
who attended the Minnesota Venture Camp. DECA attended a chamber luncheon.
BUSINESS ADVOCACY GROUP (BAG)
The BAG is the driver for the Chamber’s advocacy role in public
policy. As “the voice of Lakeville business”, the goal is to
advocate policies that strengthen our competitive business
environment and advance a thriving local and statewide
economy. Chaired by Mark Priore, of Priore Law Offices, this
group continued to serve as an advocate for our membership
by hosting morning meetings with our school board chair and
mayor, coordinating legislative updates, attending city council
and planning commission meetings, sending a delegation to
Washington D.C. and participating at the Chamber Business
Day at the Capitol annually.
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY (YEA!)
YEA! is a ground-breaking academic program taking students through the process of
starting and running real businesses. Lakeville Chamber and Lakeville schools are
responsible for launching this national program in 2013 as a first of its kind in
Minnesota for middle school students.
The class visits area businesses, meets successful entrepreneurs, meets with
professionals (attorneys, accountants, bankers, graphic designers, web developers,
insurance providers, etc.), develops a business or social
movement idea and plan, and works with chamber
member mentors. Students then pitch their ideas “live”
to a panel of investors to obtain funding and launch
their venture.
Congratulations our YEA student Katie Mills, Zen Pen,
who advanced to the national finals in New York!
AMBASSADORS
Our Ambassadors are the backbone of
the chamber’s networking success. Our
program has a solid and envious
reputation among other Chambers. Co-
chaired by Kathy Lindau of Lakeview
Bank and Peggy Rice of Definitive
Accounting, the Ambassadors Committee
continued a strong presence with volunteers at 54 networking events. The committee
delivered membership directories and conducted anniversary and 6 month visits
organized by the member services director as well as new member introductions at
General Membership meetings.
There are currently 17 Ambassadors who celebrate their success with an annual
picnic. Recipients of Ambassador of the Quarter included Erin Bang, Cheryl Morton,
Trinette Nelson and Peggy Rice; and 2014 Ambassador of the year Eric Haney of Great
Southern Bank.
CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU The CVB was founded in April
1996 as a division of the
Lakeville Chamber and is a
private 501-C6 not for profit organization funded by a local
3% lodging tax. This tax is collected by our hotels and used
for promoting Lakeville in tourism marketing.
In 2014, the CVB fulfilled our mission to attract overnight
travel to our hotels through marketing programs and advertising promotions, as well

A look at 2015 – SIZE DOES MATTER
Glenn Starfield, Lakeville Area Chamber 2015 Chair
Express Employment Professionals
We are committed this year to getting your Chamber to 500
members!
The difference between a goal and a wish is in commitment
to the timeline, specific details that allow you to really see it
happen, and the burning desire to make sure that failure is not an option.
As a leadership group, our Chamber board and committee chairs went through an
extensive exercise to hone in on the activities that drive membership and focus on
specific levels of those activities to achieve the end result. The exercise conducted at
the November Chamber retreat was inspired by the author Chris McChesney in “The
Four Disciplines of Execution”. If you haven’t read his book, I would highly encourage
you to check it out.
This leadership exercise resulted in identifying our Chamber’s Wildly Important Goal -
to reach 500 members in 2015. We will make it happen and we will need all of your
help to get there!
Just imagine the impact on our business community when we get to that 500 level!
Attendance at events will increase due to the greater number of members. More
members mean more volunteers. Sponsorship opportunities will be spread across a
broader audience and in some ways it will help all of us to achieve our individual
business goals. More customers, better networks and access to a better workforce.
2014 brought on a lot of positive change for our Chamber. If I take a look back at
moments of change within my own business career, I have always gone through my
biggest growth spurts on the heels of change.
With that being said, I am really excited the Chamber has hired Tim Roche and Penny
Zurn and glad to retain Michele Shea and Jeanne Hutter. During 2015 we hired Shelley
Jans as our new Events coordinator, and Bob Finke as Education Manager. All of their
excitement and commitment to our Wildly Important Goal is contagious!
I am honored to serve as the Lakeville Area Chamber Board Chair for 2015 and look
forward to seeing our Chamber continue to build on its legacy!
2015 is the year the Chamber will reach 500 members!
