COMPACT EXCAVATORS

Excavators are increasingly replacing larger equipment as the preferred machines for excavating, grading and site preparation projects

There’s one brand of excavator that simply can’t be beat: Bobcat. That’s because Bobcat®

excavators have repeatedly outperformed other brands in productivity, comfort, visibility and

serviceability. Dig deep, place spoil away from a trench or directly into a truck and backfill

with one machine — a Bobcat excavator.

Choose from 11 Bobcat excavators, with Conventional, Minimal and Zero Tail Swing models to match different operating conditions and digging needs. From the ultra-compact 418 to the heavy-duty 8-metric-ton E80, there’s a model suited for all applications. Nine of the 11 models offered by Bobcat are part of the M-Series — the latest generation of excavator excellence — and feature improved hydraulic horsepower for unmatched digging performance and faster cycle times.

Perhaps the better question is: Why not? First, excavators cost less to purchase and maintain than larger excavating equipment such as tractor loader backhoes (TLBs). Excavators also use less fuel, as much as 40 percent less in an 8-hour workday, saving owners more money. Bobcat excavators are much more flexible than TLBs, which are limited to 90 degrees of workgroup movement. An excavator working in the same situation has up to 180 degrees of movement for better spoil placement or truck-loading applications. Excavators need less repositioning because of their independent boom swing. Lastly, excavator owners sit in an offset position for better visibility to the

attachment and work area. TLB visibility is obstructed by the boom.

Bobcat offers five excavators with an extendable-arm option, which operates with the clamp even in the extended position; no other manufacturer comes close. The extendable-arm option provides more reach and dump height. Additionally, all five models are clamp-compatible and may be used with the optional Hydraulic X-Change mounting system for simplified attachment changes. Extending the arm is as simple as pressing the paddle switch on the joystick. The extendable-arm configuration is available as a factory-installed option or through a local Bobcat dealer.

Comfort is king in Bobcat excavators. Easily enter and exit the cab through a large door opening. Once inside, M-Series excavators have the most cab space in the industry. For added comfort, an adjustable suspension seat and arm rests and fold-up foot pedals let owners choose their preferred settings. An optional enclosed cab with heat and air conditioning is available for year-round comfort. Easy-to-reach joystick controls are well positioned and provide fingertip control of boom swing and auxiliary hydraulic functions.

There are 13 approved Bobcat attachments that may be paired with an excavator to do more than dig. They include augers, breakers, plate compactors, trenchers and rotating grapples, to name a few. Owners can quickly and easily change attachments with the exclusive X-Change mounting system, or select the optional Hydraulic X-Change system. Both are available on most Bobcat excavators.

Bobcat excavator owners benefit from selectable hydraulic auxiliary flow for more control of selected attachments for improved movements, particularly when precision matters most. On the instrument panel, owners may choose from three auxiliary flow settings: low, medium and maximum. Press the AUX mode button to choose the auxiliary flow. Low flow is best when using the PowerTilt and Hydra-Tilt™ swing accessories for more accurate angles in trenches. Medium flow is well suited for using clamps for precise movements such as placing boulders. Maximum flow is ideal when using hydraulic breakers, plate compactors or augers for peak attachment performance.

Power and finesse define Bobcat excavator on landscape installations

Troy Patterson took a leap of faith 20 years ago when he started his own landscaping and stone masonry company. Today, Patterson is a well-respected landscape contractor in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area, specializing in high-end residential and commercial landscaping. At his side is a Bobcat® E42 compact excavator, a pair of skid-steer loaders and numerous attachments.

Patterson and business partner David Petersen own D & T Landscape, Inc. “When we met, Dave was more of a plant guy and I was more of a stone guy,” Patterson says, “and we combined our talents and went forward. He has a background in architecture, does our bidding and meets with customers. I oversee the installation crews and take care of on-site needs.”

Since starting the company, Patterson has owned six Bobcat loaders and several compact excavators that are operated extensively on his landscape and hardscape installation projects. A Bobcat compact excavator is a natural complement to his loaders, particularly for lifting and placing hardscape materials and boulders.

Patterson purchased the E42 — one of nine Bobcat M-Series models — plus buckets and a clamp from Intermountain Bobcat. He says the performance

improvements between his previous Bobcat excavator and the E42 are quite noticeable.

“The E42 has more hydraulic strength when I’m trenching,” Patterson says. “I have a couple of buckets and switch depending on what I’m doing, whether it’s fine grading or trenching. It’s easy to switch between my Bobcat buckets. We have some rocky soil in this area, and the teeth on my trenching bucket help loosen the dirt, particularly when we’re installing new irrigation systems.

“The E42 is quieter than my previous machine, and the auto-idle feature is nice, too. It’s a fuel-saver for sure. Fuel is a big expense for us because we use a lot of it.” Auto idle is standard equipment on nine of 11 Bobcat excavators available today.

Joystick offers precise controlEnhancements made to Bobcat M-Series excavators give operators like Patterson more control of the boom swing and auxiliary hydraulic functions. Patterson can press a paddle switch on the joystick control to activate the clamp.

“The controls of the E42 are smooth, making it easier for me to be more precise,” Patterson says. “I use the clamp to set landscape rocks, build walls and lift garbage to load it into a container. On one project, we removed a bunch of scrub oak with the excavator and clamp. I removed the oaks and laid them in the bucket of the Bobcat loader. It was too tight of terrain for any other machine to traverse the site.”

Fine grading with angle blade optionAn angle blade option is a feature that Patterson can’t be without. He can angle the backfill blade 25 degrees left or right for preferred spoil placement.

“When we’re working next to foundations, we can angle the blade and level the dirt as we drive the excavator,” he says. A blade float feature, activated by pressing the control lever forward, provides a smooth finish when grading, leveling and backfilling, and minimizes manual labor.

A Bobcat E42 compact excavator helps operator Troy Patterson lift, carry and place boulders, as well as complete trenching projects for landscape installations.

Bobcat compact track loaders take productivity and performance to the next level

Demanding jobsites, challenging ground conditions and tight schedules require a special type of

compact loader — one that’s durable and reliable, able to push and lift more material, can keep

working when other equipment is not up to the job, has a comfortable operator station and is easy to

service. Only one brand of compact track loader meets those requirements: the Bobcat® machine.

With the addition of the new T550 and T590, replacing the T180 and T190, there are now seven Bobcat® M-Series compact track loaders available that offer the industry’s leading cab, hydraulics and loader performance. Another unit, the compact T110, is ideal for accessing hard-to-reach areas and working in confined spaces, minimizing manual labor and tools required for digging.

When it’s time to dig in and deliver pushing and lifting power, Bobcat compact track loaders outperform other brands every time. Each machine has the right balance between the engine, hydraulic pump, horsepower and cubic-inch displacement to do more and do it faster. Take the controls to experience

the loader’s impressive drive, engine torque and tractive effort. By the end of the day, you will notice the performance difference.

A fully enclosed steel undercarriage is by far the industry leader. Features include component protection (including hoses and drive motors), permanently sealed and lubricated forged-steel rollers and idlers, steel-reinforced rubber tracks and elevated sprockets that shed debris as you work. Minimum maintenance is required. The simple, strong Bobcat track system is built to last longer than other models and keep you on the job. A popular option, available on some models, is the Roller Suspension™ system. The industry-first all-steel suspension system reduces vibration and noise, creating an enhanced level of comfort, and minimizes bucket spillage.

With exceptional comfort and good visibility in all directions, the best-in-class pressurized cab on a Bobcat M-Series compact track loader makes the machine a joy to operate, even when working long hours doing difficult jobs. The forward-design places the operator in a better position to view attachments and the work area. There is 10 percent more space and 60 percent less noise inside the cab, contributing to a better experience for operators.

Compact track loaders have low ground pressure and perform well in soft, sandy, wet or muddy conditions. Their low impact means minimal damage to established surfaces for fewer repairs when the job is done and higher profits. In some cases, they enable owners to get back to work sooner or extend their working season, as much as a month in the spring and fall, to further increase income.

To make sure Bobcat compact track loaders are simple to service, engine checkpoints are located within easy reach. Routine maintenance does not require moving radiators, raising lift arms or installing lift-arm support devices. Just open the tailgate and service the machine. It’s that simple. A standard automatic shutdown feature monitors engine and hydraulic functions, alerts the operator to potential problems and shuts down the machine when necessary.

Two compact track loaders + two locations = one efficient team

Adding a second compact track loader for working on a multi-year project certainly can improve productivity and efficiency, even when the pair of Bobcat® machines are working 10 miles apart and are separated by water.

LMD Contracting, a general contractor based in Kenora, Ontario, purchased a T750 to go along with its T650. The two M-Series loaders form a powerful all-track equipment combination that fits perfectly at one of the firm’s current jobs.

“The YMCA hired us to take down and replace 18 cottages over a three-year period at their local campground,” says Bob Johnston, who owns LMD Contracting with his son, David. “One of the challenges is that the camp is located on an island in the Lake of the Woods.”

The T650 is stationed at the jobsite while the T750 is located at the company headquarters.

“We use the T750 to load and unload trucks of building materials, which are transported to the island by barge,” David says. “Then the T650, which stays on the island, unloads the barge and moves lumber, shingles, trash bins and other materials to where they are needed. The compact track loader is able to go down trails that at times can slow down or stop other equipment.

“Whether we are back in town or working on an island, the two M-Series machines have really helped us improve efficiency. Our lineup of attachments — buckets, pallet forks, auger, trencher, backhoe and stump grinder — allows us to handle whatever comes our way. That’s critical because we typically do a new construction project from start to finish, except for electric and plumbing. By having our own equipment, we can do a better job of scheduling.”

Why a track machine?LMD Contracting has been a long-time owner of Bobcat skid-steer loaders. The first machine was a 543, purchased when the company had a contract to tear down some rental houses. “Once we found out how much work could be accomplished with it,

we were sold,” Bob says. “Then we bought a 763 and did even more work. More recently, we were very impressed when we watched someone using a compact track loader.”

Two years ago, the father-and-son team ordered a T650 from Bobcat of Central Manitoba and discovered the many benefits of a compact track loader, including operating productively in wet, sloppy conditions, extending the work season and limiting ground disturbance.

“The two loaders are definitely worth the cost,” Bob says. “They are a good investment that is going to help make us more successful and, because they are Bobcat machines, they are going to hold their value.”

“Ahead of the game”Though they have had limited experience with other brands of equipment, the Johnstons have rented other machines from time to time when working out of town.

“We were never impressed enough to look at them when it came time to make a purchase,” David says. “Bobcat is ahead of the game when it comes to making advancements. It seems that the others are trying to keep up with Bobcat, by far the industry leader.”

Bob (left) and David Johnston have been pleased with the performance from their Bobcat M-Series compact track loaders, particularly the rubber track undercarriage.

Five new 500-frame-size loaders — S510, S530, S550, S570 and S590 — join six other M-Series machines (including an all-wheel steer unit) that are setting new industry standards for operator experience and jobsite success. Three other non-M-Series skid-steer loaders — the S70, S100 and S130 — are valuable in situations where access and space are limited. Choose between radius-lift-path or vertical-lift-path loaders to best match your application.

The redesigned M-Series cab brings the operator closer to the front of the machine to better monitor attachment performance and improve visibility to the corners of the machine and the work area. In fact, visibility has been substantially increased in all directions.

The new M-Series cab is also larger and more comfortable. With up to 20 percent more interior space than competitive machines, Bobcat has created a new level of

operator comfort. An adjustable seat accommodates different-sized operators while an optional air-ride seat adds even more comfort. The pressurized cab rates as the best in the business for keeping operators clean and comfortable. It’s also a factor in reducing cab noise — by as much as 60 percent over other machines.

Bobcat skid-steer loaders are designed and built for reliable performance day after day. The radiator and hydraulic oil cooler are well protected between the frame uprights to prevent damage. The superior cooling system is in a class by itself. The hydraulically powered smart fan senses machine temperature and only turns as fast as needed. It’s also 30 percent quieter than ordinary cooling fans. The patented, dual-path cooling system takes in cool, clean air from above while forcing warm engine air out two side vents.

An industry exclusive, the chaincase on a Bobcat loader is maintenance-free and has fixed axle tubes, stronger axles, fully sealed bearings and the largest chains in the industry (38 percent stronger than other brands).

A standard feature on Bobcat loaders is automatic shutdown protection. The system, which monitors engine and hydraulic functions, alerts the operator and shuts down the machine when there is a problem.

Unparalleled access to service points makes regular maintenance easy. The large, swing-open tailgate makes it convenient to do routine maintenance. The transverse-mounted engine and belt drive system are accessible from one side for easy maintenance checks.

Get more work completed faster and easier. More than 65 Bobcat attachments are available to turn skid-steer loaders into a multi-purpose tool carrier that, within a matter of minutes, can dig a trench, unload a truck and sweep a parking lot. The standard Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system allows the operator to move effortlessly from one attachment to another. An optional Power Bob-Tach™ system is available for changing non-hydraulic attachments from inside the cab.

Dozens of optional features — such as heat and air conditioning, two-speed travel, deluxe instrumentation, high-flow auxiliary hydraulics, Advanced Control System and Selectable Joystick Controls — make it even more enjoyable and productive to operate a Bobcat skid-steer loader.

The Bobcat A770 all-wheel steer loader is the only compact loader in the industry that offers both all-wheel steer and skid-steer capabilities for minimal ground disturbance. In the all-wheel steer mode, both the right and left sides work together to minimize turf damage and marks on finished surfaces, and reduce tire wear. The inside tires turn at a different angle and speed than the outside tires. In skid-steer mode, the tires on the left side work independently of those on the right side to achieve maximum maneuverability.

fINgERTIp cONTROLS

Bobcat® loader operators can better manage attachments with help from fingertip controls. With minimal effort, operators can precisely control Bobcat attachment functions for improved productivity. A Bobcat detent feature continuously engages attachment flow without needing to hold a switch. Additionally, the detent feature can be used to lock the auxiliary hydraulic flow in the opposite direction. This is particularly helpful for use with Bobcat sweepers, soil conditioners, tillers and other attachments. Variable or maximum flow is available for operation of Bobcat grapples and combination buckets.

The value of a good breakfast — and a great loader

Delbert and Monroe Schlabach know how to get each day started right. They eat a 6 a.m. breakfast together at a restaurant where they fine-tune their work plan, then meet their five employees at the shop an hour later and travel to the first jobsite, typically with a Bobcat® skid-steer loader. It’s a routine that has worked for 28 years.

“That early-morning planning and preparation helps us focus on our projects and enables us to give our customers an honest day of work for a fair price,” Delbert says. “We are more efficient because we know what we are going to do.”

Oil discovery fueling boomWhile they have had steady work for the almost three decades they have operated Schlabach Excavating, job planning has become even more important this year. That’s because they are right in the center of a recent discovery of huge oil reserves in the Marcellus and Utica shales. Energy firms have been producing natural gas for years from the shale rock located in the eastern half of Ohio, but this is the first time they have found a major oil reserve. One energy company executive said the result could be 25 billion barrels of oil, making it one of the largest discoveries in U.S. history. Other estimates range from 38 billion to 384 billion barrels.

“People around here are leasing their land for the oil and gas rights,” says Monroe, “and home construction is picking up as the population is expected to grow. If everything works out, our entire area, including us, should be sitting pretty good.”

The Schlabachs, whose company is headquartered in Berlin, Ohio, regularly work for four builders. Their jobs include digging out basements and finish grading around the sites. If the property is in a rural area, they also install septic systems.

During the early years they were in business, they did much of this work with a dozer or tractor-loader-backhoe. Then they started renting Bobcat skid-steer loaders and about 16 years ago they purchased the first of their five loaders.

“Each Bobcat loader enabled us to handle projects more efficiently,” Delbert says. “Our current model, an S650, is the biggest and best one we’ve owned. It replaced an S185. Now we can move much more gravel in our 80-inch construction/industrial bucket (and more snow in the winter). The maneuverability of the loader allows us to finish grade right up next to the foundation. The time we save is amazing.”

The M-Series machine, purchased from Bobcat of Wooster (Ohio), includes features that the Schlabachs and their operators really like.

“The visibility of the forward cab and larger windows and the bigger, quieter cab make operating it a pleasure,” Monroe says. “There is no comparison to anything else we’ve seen. As the economy in this area continues to improve, we expect to put a lot of hours on the machine.”

Brothers Delbert (left) and Monroe Schlabach can work more efficiently, thanks to Bobcat skid-steer loaders and attachments.

Bobcat mini track loaders are the best option when space is limited

Isn’t there a better way? For anyone working in limited-access areas with

a shovel, rake or wheelbarrow, that’s a common question. And in

many of these situations, bigger equipment just won’t fit. That’s

when the smart solution is a small machine that delivers big results.

With more than two dozen Bobcat attachments approved for mini track loaders, there are an almost endless number of jobs that you no longer need to complete with hand tools, or with back-breaking labor, either.

From the angle broom and auger to the tiller and trencher, whatever the project, there is an attachment that turns a Bobcat mini track loader into an efficient and productive jobsite solution. Site preparation, utility installation, demolition and transporting building materials are just of a few of the tasks that can be accomplished with the mini track loader and a job-matched attachment. All attachments can be connected quickly and easily with the standard Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system. Some attachments approved for mini track loaders may also be operated with larger Bobcat loaders and excavators for even more versatility.

The MT52 and MT55 are ideal for tasks that restrict the use of larger Bobcat equipment. Both are just 36 inches wide (with bucket) and 72 inches long without an attachment. With the ability to fit through doorways, gates and tight property lines, the machines are valuable both indoors and outdoors. An easy-to-attach ride-on platform enhances operator comfort and increases productivity over other walk-behind loaders. It can be quickly removed to use the walk-behind option.

You can rely on the durable rubber track undercarriage to keep the mini track loaders working in soft, sandy, wet or muddy conditions with minimal ground disturbance. The working season can be extended in both spring and fall to increase revenue and profits.

Rubber tracks also help limit damage to surfaces such as established lawns, concrete and patio pavers. This reduces repairs and costs when the project is done. Ground pressure is just 4.7 psi for the MT52 and 3.6 psi for the MT55 using the wide track option.

The one-hand-drive controls on the Bobcat mini track loaders are easy to use and reach. One multi-function handle operates travel speed and direction while another lever controls lift and tilt functions. The adjustable height drive controls allow operators of varying heights to work comfortably.

Check out these mini track loaders at your local Bobcat dealership and learn just how much a one-man crew can do.

Mini track loader reduces expenses, creates new opportunities

A decade after starting his landscaping firm, Josh Hawkins made an addition to his equipment inventory that not only helped lower his current overhead, but built a solid foundation for moving into a new area of business.

Hawkins, owner of Slope Solutions, works mostly in the mountains north and west of Morganton, N.C., providing landscape design, installation and maintenance in all phases of landscaping, lighting, pavers and walls.

“Recently, the biggest challenge has been to provide customers with a top-of-the-line look for value pricing,” he says. “At first it was difficult because I had to get my overhead and operating costs in line. I think I’ve solved that problem.”

One of his goals was to reduce some labor expenses.

“I was relying on a lot of hand work where my Bobcat® M-Series machines — a T650 compact track loader and an E45 compact excavator — couldn’t fit. At the end of last year, I purchased an MT55 mini track loader from Bobcat of Lenoir and that made a big difference.”

He operates the MT55 for landscaping tasks, including handling and planting trees. Its width is less than 36 inches, and its rubber tracks produce low ground pressure for minimal disruption to established surfaces.

“I previously unloaded trees with my compact track loader, moved them into the backyard with a tree cart if space was tight, and then dug the holes by hand,” Hawkins says. “With the MT55, pallet fork and auger attachments, that job and others have become much easier. The mini track loader has allowed us to get more done in less time and with fewer employees.”

Site development“The MT55 has really been beneficial to our company with our land development clients,” Hawkins says. “The tough housing market makes budgets tight on new developments. This equipment has really helped install silt fences because, without the mini track loader, we would have to clear out a much bigger area to use the T650 or E45. Our clients are looking for the most economical ways to get the projects completed on time and within the budget. The MT55 makes this possible when installing silt fence.”

Trail-buildingAlong with being a valuable complement to his highly productive Bobcat loader and excavator, the MT55 and dozer blade has enabled Hawkins to expand into the trail-building business through the mountain terrain. Hawkins sees more trail-building in his future now that he has the right combination of equipment. He’s done plenty of hiking trails for developers in subdivisions. He is using that experience to bid on trail work in the surrounding areas.

“Trails are somewhat narrow and you have to make them interesting for the user,” he says. “They often require adjustments in the field, and with the MT55, we will be able to make any needed changes from the original design easier and faster. It’s the perfect machine for this application.”

>>> Genuine Bobcat partsBobcat dealerships readily stock genuine Bobcat parts and component-specific fluids and lubricants. Commonly used Bobcat fluids such as engine oil, grease, hydraulic fluid and antifreeze/coolant are designed for use in Bobcat compact equipment. A good reason to purchase genuine Bobcat parts is because they’re covered by a warranty. Items such as batteries and fluids are covered under the warranty, too.

>>> personalize your machinePersonalize your Bobcat compact equipment and attachments with a variety of options and accessories. Enhance your experience in a Bobcat machine with the addition of a cab enclosure, ride control or heavy-duty radio. For improved security, Bobcat offers a keyless-start kit. Simply enter a code and press the start button to get working. Keyless start prevents unauthorized use of equipment and eliminates the need for keys (and trying to find them).

Get a refresher or learn for the first time from six new maintenance videos available on www.Bobcat.com.

Properly maintaining your Bobcat equipment will help extend its life, and now it’s easy to learn the essential maintenance checks.

Visit www.MyWorkSaver.com/maintenance/tips to watch the videos.

For additional information regarding maintenance procedures, refer to your operation and maintenance manual, operator’s handbook and machine decals.

>>> Qualified service techniciansFactory-trained Bobcat service technicians are available at dealerships to help maximize the life of your Bobcat® compact equipment and uptime. Bobcat service technicians are required to keep up with the latest technologies, including interim Tier 4 and Tier 4 non-road emission requirements and corresponding engine technology. A majority of Bobcat dealers may be able to respond to your on-site needs with a field service truck, making it more convenient for you.

>>> Maintenance programsBobcat dealers offer two maintenance programs to identify potential machine-debilitating issues before they occur, as well as perform routine service or periodic maintenance. BobCHECKSm is a free multi-point inspection of items that require routine service, adjustment or maintenance, such as hydraulic, drive and electrical systems. As part of the check, Bobcat service technicians use an online system to help troubleshoot and expedite repairs, and Bobcat equipment-specific diagnostic monitoring tools help technicians analyze machine performance quickly and accurately.

For periodic maintenance, Bobcat dealers offer a service agreement called BobCARE PmSm. It is a planned maintenance program that helps owners maximize uptime and protect the machine’s residual value. The program can be customized to your preferences, and you’ll know that your Bobcat equipment is being serviced properly with genuine Bobcat parts.

Visit www.MyWorkSaver.com/parts to find additional information about Bobcat parts and service, including a complete list of parts and accessories.

“Most operators are pretty good about keeping up with routine maintenance — it’s the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ things that are most often overlooked and can lead to costly repairs,” Sacks says. “It’s these issues that the PM service program helps detect.”

Continuous monitoring

The core of the PM service program is a small Global Positioning System (GPS) that service technicians install on Bobcat® machines. The device is installed free of charge at the time of the first service. Equipment model serial numbers are linked to a unique number assigned to each tracking device, which monitors machine activity and location.

The device monitors several important functions — hours of operation, oil pressure, battery voltage, etc. — and generates an email or text alert automatically when potential problems surface or hours specified for various routine maintenance tasks approach. The information is relayed to a central database and recorded for historical documentation at the dealership.

“We developed the PM service program to help our customers get the maximum productivity and value from their Bobcat equipment,” Sacks says. “The best way to do that is to keep machines properly maintained through scheduled maintenance. The program is designed to allow our customers to focus on their business and let us take care of the maintenance. Timely completion of various maintenance tasks helps minimize downtime and saves our customers money.”

A main component of the PM service program is a thorough 33-point, top-to-bottom, inside and outside inspection. Once completed, customers receive a BobCHECKSM Inspection Report summarizing the results. Service technicians then complete scheduled maintenance and offer recommendations for any additional services and corresponding charges that may be beneficial in preventing the onset of bigger problems.

Customized plans match customer needsAccording to Christina Marson, director of finance for Ed’s Plant World, a landscaping company in Brandywine, Md., the PM service program offered by Metro Bobcat Sales has been of great benefit for their company. The company’s equipment fleet includes six Bobcat machines.

“We run our machines really hard,” Marson says. “The PM service program has allowed us to keep up with maintenance and not have to worry about it. We’ve since gotten much better productivity from our equipment, and extended machine lifespan.”

The PM service program can be customized to fit the needs of individual customers. Customers are still responsible for completing daily maintenance tasks, including greasing, checking fluid levels, changing air filters and making sure that all the safety features are working properly.

“The great thing, in addition to the scheduled maintenance reminders is the ongoing monitoring,” Marson says. “Our dealer knows the hours of operation and what service each machine is due for. I don’t have to spend all my time worrying about maintaining them. I would never buy another machine without the PM service program.”

Reaping the benefits of a preventive maintenance service program offered by a local Bobcat dealer

An innovative preventive maintenance (PM) service program available to customers of Metro Bobcat

Sales, Gaithersburg, Md., is helping maximize machine productivity and extend equipment life.

Commence wrecking

In the competitive demolition business, a company that owns its own equipment has an advantage, especially on projects where the schedule is an important factor. That, says Scott McPherson, is one of the reasons the firm started by his parents 46 years ago has been so successful.

“These days, in our industry, you have to find every competitive advantage possible, whether it is bid work or negotiated,” he says. “Owning our equipment makes us more competitive. We are not dependent on renting machines or getting them from someone else. We can match the equipment to the job. That’s a big key to being productive and efficient.

“Plus, we arrive at the job with dependable equipment that doesn’t break down, even in a difficult work environment. We are not constantly trying to keep a machine running. As a company that is on the front-end of a schedule, we need to get in, do our job and get out so others can follow.”

Demolition lineupAmong the equipment that helps keep McPherson Wrecking, Inc. working efficiently are eight Bobcat® skid-steer loaders and two compact excavators. The machines, purchased from White Star Machinery in Topeka, Kan., are able to handle a variety of on-site demolition duties because the company also owns about two dozen Bobcat attachments.

“We have been extremely pleased with our Bobcat equipment,” says McPherson, who manages project bidding for the Topeka-based company. “The machines have proven to be very durable in difficult working conditions. At the same time, Bobcat attachments are every bit as tough as the loaders and excavators.

Other Bobcat attachments include a Brushcat™ rotary cutter, drop hammer, planer, scraper, vibratory roller, pallet forks, excavator trenching buckets, three industrial grapples, four hydraulic breakers and eight additional loader buckets.

“Whether we are busting concrete with a breaker, tearing down a wall with a grapple or removing tile with a scraper, all of our Bobcat attachments stand up to the job. If they weren’t tough and durable, we wouldn’t keep buying them.”

Family works togetherMcPherson’s parents, Virgil and Sara, started the company in 1966 right after one of the costliest tornadoes in U.S. history tore through Topeka. They built the business into a leader in commercial, industrial and residential demolition in eastern Kansas. In addition to Scott, two other sons are active in the business. Shannon manages projects in the field while Craig manages the maintenance shop and the family’s 550-acre farm operation. Also, grandson Mitch works full-time in the business as an equipment operator and grandson Laramie works part-time.

“Much of our work is repeat business with government agencies, school districts and general contractors,” McPherson says. “Whether it is a total demolition project or selective, they know we bring reliability to the job. Our Bobcat equipment is an important part of what makes us successful.”

While no piece of equipment can do more, versatility only tells part of the machine’s story. Look at the performance side and the comfort features and you will see more reasons why the Toolcat 5600 and 5610 are in a class by themselves.

Toolcat utility work machines have been designed and built by Bobcat Company in Bismarck and Gwinner, N.D., to deliver top performance in a wide range of applications. Excellent lifting and pulling capacity, fast travel speed (up to 18 mph), superior pushing power and traction, multi-attachment and implement capabilities and outstanding cargo capacity combine to make the Toolcat machines perfect for buildings and grounds, agricultural and homeowner with acreage applications.

The 5600 can haul 2,000 pounds of tools, materials and supplies in the 17-cubic-foot cargo box. Unload the box in seconds without exiting the cab with the hydraulic dump. Towing capacity is 4,000 pounds to quickly transport trailered supplies and light equipment.

In most cases, superior performance is based on what the Toolcat machines can accomplish with more than 40 approved attachments and implements. You can use the 5600 for dozens of jobs, from snow removal to sweeping to installing fences. With the Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system, one person can change front-mounted attachments in minutes. For even easier attachment changes, the Power Bob-Tach™ system is available as an option. The 5610 allows you to use front-mounted attachments, as well as PTO and rear remote hydraulics to power Category 1, 3-pt. hitch implements or attachments.

Doing double duty is standard for the Toolcat machines. For example, the 5600 can use an attachment such as an auger or trencher on the front and carry supplies such as fencing, trees and shrubs, and irrigation materials in the cargo box. Another option for the 5600 is a snow attachment on the front and a Bobcat salt and sand spreader in the box. These types of jobsite combinations can save a vast amount of time and work.

In addition to delivering superior performance, Toolcat utility work machines are easy on existing surfaces because of the all-wheel steer feature. The feature is activated by simply pressing a button to transition from front-wheel steer to all-wheel steer.

Less damage helps prevent costly repairs after the job is complete. The precise maneuverability of all-wheel steer enables you to work in confined spaces, and the hydrostatic drive system provides excellent traction on snow, ice and loose gravel.

Automotive-type cab features, including foot pedals, adjustable seat and adjustable tilt steering wheel provide the type of environment that helps maintain productivity throughout the day. Optional heat and air conditioning add even more comfort. The driver and passenger can count on a smooth ride, even at the maximum travel speed, because Toolcat utility work machines have an independent suspension system, long wheelbase and more wheel-to-ground contact. Visibility from inside the cab is outstanding, an important feature at all times, but particularly valuable when mowing, sweeping and plowing snow.

A utility work machine can reduce the size of your fleet because it can do the jobs of other pieces of equipment, eliminating the cost of maintaining multiple machines. Talk to your local Bobcat dealer to experience the difference a Toolcat utility work machine can make around your business and property.

ExCEpTIONAL MANEUvERAbILITY

With the press of a button, Toolcat™ utility work machine operators can switch into all-wheel steer mode. Four steerable axles deliver a tighter turning radius than a compact tractor, utility vehicle or pickup truck for better maneuverability, particularly when working in tight areas. All-wheel steering also minimizes tire wear while working on asphalt or concrete, and protects sensitive surfaces such as grass or turf. When operators are done working in all-wheel steer mode they can easily switch back to front-wheel steer by pressing the same button.

Toolcat machines get high marks at the University of North Dakota

There has been much advancement in equipment in the 20-plus years that Ed Koble has worked for the grounds maintenance department at the University of North Dakota (UND), but none that has made such a difference as Toolcat™ 5600 utility work machines.

Koble is the grounds superintendent at UND in Grand Forks, N.D. The first university founded in North Dakota is still the largest and has an enrollment of 14,000 students. Koble is responsible for 650 acres, including buildings, and sidewalks and parking lots that must be free of snow and ice. Seventeen full-time employees work for Koble in grounds maintenance and landscaping, and among his equipment fleet are two Toolcat 5600 machines.

An early startWhile most students are sleeping, Koble and his employees get an early start when it snows. “We start clearing snow at 2 a.m. and need to have the inner campus done by 7 a.m.,” Koble says. “We have 27 miles of sidewalks and 130 acres of parking lots. Normally we get about 39 inches of snow in Grand Forks and, although last winter (2011–2012) we had just 20 inches, we have been averaging about 60 inches for the past 15 years. A few years ago we had 79 inches.”

In addition to the two Toolcat machines, Koble’s department also owns four Bobcat® skid-steer loaders — two smaller ones for clearing sidewalks and two larger loaders that his employees operate with a snowblower attachment to clear parking lots. All of his Bobcat equipment is utilized to its maximum potential. “The Toolcat machines are used every day, 12 months of the year,” Koble says. “We have Bobcat angle brooms, blades and snowblowers for them, and they get a lot of hours.”

“Versatile pieces of equipment”Byron Anderson is a 30-plus year veteran and longtime equipment operator at UND. “The Toolcat machines are the most versatile and agile pieces of equipment for our application,” Anderson says.

“I prefer to operate it in all-wheel steer mode so it doesn’t damage the grass when we are carrying tools and supplies on the campus. We have very little room to park vehicles. It’s convenient for us to pull off the road and park on the grass.”

“We can put two people in them, put shovels and rakes in the cargo box, or we can put dirt in the box and haul it,” Koble adds. “In the winter we place Bobcat sand and salt spreaders in the cargo box.” With a front-mounted snow removal attachment and a salt and sand spreader in the cargo box, the Toolcat 5600s are a complete snow and ice removal system.

Loyalty to Bobcat“We tried other equipment, but we’ve stuck with Bobcat because the company has been good to us, especially our local dealer, Bobcat of Grand Forks,” Koble says. “My employees are familiar with Bobcat machines, and it’s easier to stay with a trusted brand. Bobcat equipment is top-notch. And it’s a big deal for us that they’re made right here in North Dakota.” Bobcat skid-steer loaders and Toolcat machines are both manufactured in Gwinner, N.D.

CLES

Making work easier is priority one for Bobcat utility vehicles. It starts with a sturdy frame, durable components and high horsepower. An electronic fuel ignition, available on gasoline-powered Bobcat 3400 and 3400XL models, provides smooth starts and rapid acceleration, and it adjusts to temperature and altitude changes to maintain peak performance.

Available with gas or diesel engines, Bobcat utility vehicles have ample horsepower to deliver speed, acceleration and power when it’s needed most. Travel up to 30 miles per hour to reduce travel time and complete projects faster. Choose between low-range for maximum torque or towing heavy loads. For faster speeds when the load is light, use the high-range.

Utility vehicles are a more effective way of transporting passengers and materials than all-terrain vehicles, and they use less fuel and are more compact than pickup trucks. Bobcat utility vehicles offer owners a spacious cargo box to haul up to 1,100 pounds. A 2-inch receiver hitch is available to pull a trailer with additional cargo.

Three drive modes help operators best match the conditions to the vehicle. It’s as easy as pushing a button to select the drive mode: four-wheel, two-wheel

or turf. In four-wheel drive, if the rear wheels start to lose traction, the front wheels engage to power through difficult terrain. In two-wheel drive, the rear differential is locked for added traction on soft ground or gravel, and both wheels spin independently, resulting in minimal ground disturbance when turning. Turf mode is ideal for minimal ground disturbance on established or sensitive surfaces.

The four-wheel independent suspension on Bobcat utility vehicles contributes to a comfortable ride for the driver and passengers. Each wheel moves independently to keep the wheels in contact with the ground for maximum traction and exceptional comfort. An adjustable rear suspension allows the driver to customize the mounting position; vertically for heavy-duty hauling or angled for improved comfort. Easy entry and exit, ergonomic controls, low-effort steering, comfortable seats and a quiet engine help contribute to excellent operator and passenger comfort. Add an optional cab and heat for cold weather comfort, whether it’s checking on cattle, hauling fire wood or clearing snow.

Rapid responders

After a thorough evaluation of utility vehicles, Bobcat® models rose to the top of the list for officials with the City of Tampa (Fla.). Based on the results of an in-depth assessment, Tampa Fire Rescue purchased five new Bobcat 3400XL utility vehicles.

“This is our first Bobcat equipment purchase,” says Frank Pfister, specifications officer for the Tampa Fire Rescue. “After the City of Tampa did an on-site evaluation of many different manufacturers of this type of vehicle, it was determined that Bobcat utility vehicles fit our needs.”

The City of Tampa conducted its on-site evaluation prior to the 2012 Republican National Convention in August. Bobcat utility vehicles provided by the local dealer proved to be the best solution. After the evaluation, the city’s police department purchased 18 Bobcat 3400XL utility vehicles for security purposes.

Pfister is responsible for supervising, overseeing and coordinating Tampa Fire Rescue’s fleet vehicle inventory, including vehicle specifications and purchases. He’s also responsible for Tampa’s fire stations and support facility, including property improvements, repairs and construction.

Pfister says the 3400XL operators have told him that the vehicles are well-built and easy to operate. “Bobcat utility vehicles are necessary to respond quickly to areas where normal fire equipment cannot get to during special events,” he says. The Bobcat 3400XL is just 60 inches wide and can travel up to 30 miles per hour.

TELEHANdLERS

There is a lot to like about the V417 telehandler.

The extendable, low-profile, two-stage boom has a lift height of 17 feet, 2 inches and a maximum reach of 10 feet, 4 inches. The two-section boom protects cylinders, hoses and lines. Its low-mounted position provides good all-around visibility. A light, rigid, unitized frame is strong enough to lift more than 4,400 pounds. That’s as much as heavier machines in its class. A 6-foot-wide frame and a height of just 6 feet, 5 inches allow the machine to work in and maneuver around confined spaces. A fully enclosed cab, which is more than 36 inches wide, has heat and air conditioning, a standard suspension seat and rear and left-side windows that open.

Two methods of transmission operation are controlled by a simple mode switch. One is for applications needing higher wheel torque, such as pushing or loading a truck. The other is for normal working conditions. Three steering modes provide job-matched options: all-wheel steer for tight turning, front-wheel steer for road travel (15 mph top speed) and crab-steer for positioning loads from side to side.

More than 20 approved Bobcat loader attachments enable the telehandler to take on a large number of jobs, ranging from loading and lifting to ground preparation. Change attachments quickly and easily with the Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system.

With a single loader-style hydraulic joystick that operates the boom and attachment functions, the V417 is designed for top production. Variable-control thumb wheels on the joystick operate the boom and auxiliary hydraulic functions. One shuttle lever controls forward and reverse and high or low settings. Use the other lever to operate turn signals, horn and high-beam road lights. The steering wheel is similar to what is found in many pickup trucks.

The V417 is a high-performance machine that’s built to handle the toughest projects with ease. It’s right at home when the job calls for loading, digging, grading, backfilling, handling and placing materials, moving bales, sweeping, working around waste transfer stations, mulching and removing snow. It’s also a valuable addition to any rental fleet.

A Bobcat telehandler is the smart choice for jobs requiring greater lift height, reach and capacity

Working efficiently can be difficult at times when the job requires greater lift height, reach and capacity

than a traditional skid-steer or compact track loader can provide. Enter the Bobcat® V417 telehandler, the

perfect machine for lifting farther and carrying more at construction sites, agriculture and agribusiness

applications, and landscaping projects.

The Bobcat V417 telescopic tool carrier helps Erik Timmermans with tasks that require a compact machine with more reach and higher lifting abilities.

Then, in 1991, Case became acquainted with Bobcat® equipment — specifically the skid-steer loader — a device he considered a miraculous machine and a landscaper’s dream. Case purchased his first skid-steer loader later that year, and has since expanded the number in the company’s fleet of Bobcat equipment to more than a dozen, which includes a Bobcat V417 telescopic tool carrier (telehandler), purchased in 2007 from Bobcat Country Equipment.

“We specialize in landscape construction and also do a lot of landscaping maintenance work,” Erik says. “The V417 tool carrier with extended reach is ideal for loading and hauling bricks and stone, and for reaching balconies and higher-level decks and patios. The V417 basically replaced the wheelbarrow and has eliminated a lot of backbreaking labor. It is the perfect equipment for reaching into and over areas that we can’t with anything else.”

The Timmermans brothers also like the versatility of the V417. Using the pallet fork attachment, crews can transport pallets of brick to within inches of a hardscape construction site — eliminating a lot of manual labor — reducing the incidence of injury and helping expedite the completion of jobs more efficiently.

“The V417 tool carrier helps us get jobs done quicker,” Erik says. “It cuts down on the amount of landscape construction material-handling we have to do manually. We use it to complete a lot of different chores on a jobsite.

“We have quite a range of Bobcat equipment models in our fleet and each is very versatile and reliable. In addition to the V417, we also have several Bobcat skid-steer loaders and compact track loaders. When the weather is damp and grounds are muddy and the conditions become challenging, there’s a Bobcat equipment model in our fleet that can handle just about any type of condition on any jobsite. They are all reliable and have made easy work of a lot of the manual labor our crews were doing before.”

When immigrant Case Timmermans came to British Columbia from his native Netherlands in 1976, he was mesmerized by the spectacular scenery and lush landscape surrounding the Vancouver metropolitan area. Shortly thereafter, he realized that it was his love of nature and heartfelt desire to be a landscaper that prompted this Dutch native to pursue his professional calling.

So, in 1977, with a wheelbarrow, a shovel and a whole lot of energy and determination, his dream came true when he founded Timmermans Landscaping in the city of Abbotsford, British Columbia. He was later joined by his brother Erik, who helped Case grow the business. Today, more than 35 years later, Timmermans Landscaping — the company that still bears his name and remains family-owned and operated — is one of the most successful commercial and residential landscaping companies in the Vancouver area.

Loyal Bobcat equipment enthusiastsFor more than a decade and a half, the Timmermans managed their landscaping operation with a lot of sweat, hard work and a couple of well-used tractors.

Bobcat compact tractors provide labor-saving solutions on farms, acreages, landscaping projects and campuses, helping you get more done in less time

Combining durability, power and comfort into a compact footprint, Bobcat® tractors are increasingly

popular in the Bobcat family of equipment. Bobcat has seven tractor models, ranging from 22 to 49 hp,

and dozens of attachments and implements to further maximize productivity — all from the company

that invented the compact equipment industry more than 50 years ago.

To fully maximize versatility, each compact tractor may be paired with genuine Bobcat attachments and implements: 3-point hitch, loader-mounted, Power Take-Off (PTO) or hydraulic-driven. The optional Bob-Tach® attachment mounting system is convenient for changing of front-mounted attachments. For seasonal attachment or implement use, contact your local Bobcat dealer about renting one.

Bobcat® compact tractors are built to be some of the heaviest tractors on the market, and it’s why they perform so well. The robust construction originates from a design that specifies heavy-duty axles, transmissions, undercarriages and frames. The solid components add durability and help transfer more horsepower to the ground for maximum traction when pushing and pulling. The hefty front axles contribute to industry-leading lift capacities, enabling them to carry more material.

Operator comfort sets Bobcat compact tractors apart from others. Take a seat in any model from the CT122 to the CT450 and its standard suspension seat limits vibration when traveling over rough terrain. These adjustable seats can be shifted forward or backward to easily reach the pedals, controls and steering wheel. Tilt steering on all Bobcat tractors lets you adjust the steering wheel to your preferred angle. Controls were also designed with ergonomics in mind. An integrated joystick design, logical control placement and hanging foot pedals all contribute to an operating experience that complements the body and keeps the focus on the task.

Bobcat compact tractors are simple to operate with automotive-influenced controls that are easy to use. Color-coded knobs on the control handles are quick to identify and placed within easy reach. When you load a bucket,

work in a barn, open a gate or connect an implement, it’s important to have easy access to the operator area. A fully integrated joystick control means you can enter and exit the tractor from either side with no obstruction, and climbing on board is made even easier with fender-mounted grab handles that provide a solid grip.

More than 400 Bobcat tractor dealers in North America provide sales, service and parts support, as well as training resources. Visit a local dealer to test drive a Bobcat compact tractor.

a BoBcat ct440 compact tractor’s BIg power In a small footprInt makes the grade

Compact tractor takes its place in landscaping fleets

Like any savvy entrepreneur, Wade Velten started out small and discovered that preparation, experience and networking can lead to bigger opportunities.

When he completed dual associate degrees in horticulture and business management, he already had a staff of eight. In 1995, the business leapfrogged when a friend tipped him off to an opportunity to purchase Buckley’s Prairie Landscaping, a local contracting firm and popular century-old garden center in Springfield, Ill.

The acquisition led to expanding his equipment fleet, including a Bobcat® skid-steer loader and a compact track loader, to manage residential and commercial landscape maintenance and irrigation services. With a staff numbering 45, Velten added a Bobcat CT440 compact tractor from Bobcat of Springfield, dedicated primarily to performing finish grade work for customers, as well as loading chores at the garden center.

Ideal fitVelten points out that the 41-hp tractor’s compact size and 3-point lift capacity is an ideal fit to his customers’ residential properties, which typically average 8,000 to 10,000 square feet of turf, but it’s also often used on 3- to 5-acre sites.

“If you’re grading 10 yards in a week with a small tractor, you’re really going to beat a little unit up,” he says. “Even though the CT440’s footprint is compact, you don’t have to run it full throttle and you get longer life out of the machine,” Velten says.

Prior to owning Bobcat, Velten owned other brands, but prefers the Bobcat tractor and its hydrostatic transmission for preparing seed beds. “It has a low profile and is very powerful,” he says. “When you’re in a higher gear where you need to move a little quicker, it works very efficiently.”

Velten likes the productivity he gets from his compact tractor for high-volume lawn work. “The tractor finishes grades on yards much quicker than putting attachments on a loader, because the grading’s done behind you and you’re not driving over it again,” Velten says.

Versatility is another key factor. The CT440 often helps mowing brush, and its 2,030-pound loader lift capacity provides the strength to load delivery trucks and customer vehicles at the busy 4-acre retail division.

Full-service landscapingA visit to the company’s website (www.buckleysprairielandscaping.net) shows a prospective customer that Velten has the horsepower and hands-on expertise to construct everything from hardscapes and landscapes to water features and entire lawns — much of it with the Bobcat compact tractor, loaders and attachments. The loaders also contribute to the company’s reputation as one of the capital city’s top snow removal operations. The loaders are typically equipped with a snow blade or snow pusher to help clear commercial parking lots.

Back in college, Velten only imagined how diverse his operation could become. “I couldn’t do what I do now without dedicated staff and Bobcat equipment. The versatility of the machines and the power they have for their footprint is very good, and the compact tractor’s always going to have its place.” Velten says.

A Bobcat compact tractor complements Wade Velten’s skid-steer loader and compact track loader for landscaping assignments.

“The tractor finishes grades on yards much quicker than putting attachments on a loader, because the grading’s done behind you and you’re not driving over it again.”

Since Bobcat Company invented the skid-steer loader more than 50 years ago – and created the compact equipment industry along with it – some people mistakenly call any skid-steer “a Bobcat.” Well, just like all skid-steers aren’t created equal, not all skid-steer loaders carry the Bobcat® brand.

So please only use the word “Bobcat” when referring to genuine Bobcat products. And please only use “Bobcat” as an adjective preceding the genuine Bobcat product you are referencing – like Bobcat skid-steer loader, Bobcat compact track loader or Bobcat mini excavator.

Doing so will ensure your Bobcat brand equipment retains the value you and the industry place on it.

It’s not “a Bobcat.”It’s a Bobcat skid-steer loader.
