The idea for offering wholesome food products for pets and “boutique” items for pet lovers has been percolating

in the mind of Ellyn Suga for a few years. This past December, it became reality with the opening of the Shop Dog Boutique, located at The Bridges at 57th.

While pursuing an undergraduate degree in Montana, Suga worked at a local pet shop and started doing her own research into pet foods and other products. She met personally with food distributors to get a better understanding of the products that were available, seeking those that offered the most natural, healthy ingredients for dogs and cats.

Many of the products are made in our neighboring state of Minnesota, such as the Sojos brand. Their “Good Dog” treats are 100% natural, wheat and corn free, and come in such pet-enticing flavors as Peanut Butter & Jelly, Apple Dumpling, Blueberry Cobbler and Chicken Pot Pie.

Solid Gold offers a line of jerky products made with real beef, lamb or turkey. Zuke’s treats are popular with pet owners and give your outdoorsy dogs a chance to enjoy “gamey” flavors like wild rabbit, grilled venison and savory salmon. The Dried And Alive (DNA) brand is headquartered in Texas, but their dehydrated food products are made at a plant in Mitchell, SD. You simply add warm water to rehydrate.

“Customers seem to be very pleased with our range of foods for both dogs and cats,” says Suga. “Some of the lines offer only grain-free products and others have a variety of options. There is a similar focus on healthy eating for pets, just as we pet owners look for healthy options for ourselves and our families. Pets truly are a member of the family, and we are helping pet owners ensure a longer, healthier life for their pets through good nutrition.”

There is more to the store than just pet food, though.When Suga moved back to Sioux Falls in 2010, she worked for

the Great Outdoor Store, which provided the inspiration for a line of products for active pets and pet owners. “I love the Ruffwear line,” says Suga. “It’s kind of the crossover product for pet owners that would also be customers at the Great Outdoor Store. It’s perfect for those that love to be active and outdoors. To get ready for your day hiking or hunting, you can find sturdy leashes, hiking packs, collapsible food and water bowls and even an insulated overcoat to protect your four-legged friend from cold, brush or burrs. Oh, and don’t forget to protect those paws with Polar Trex boots.

For those who are more inclined to take a leisurely stroll around the block, check out the rack of stylish outerwear, from cable-knit sweaters and Alpaca ponchos to quilted vests and hooded “pet parkas.”

After the day out, use the Paw Plunger to clean your pet’s paws. You can also pamper your pet with special shampoos, conditioners and treatment products for bites and itches, as well as healthy ears, skin, teeth and gums.

There are also plenty of toys here for both indoor and outdoor play. Check out the fun recycled cotton toys from ORE that feature images of a hot dog, shoe or postman. The Orbee line of tuff toys feature “chew-o-meter” ratings so you can pick the appropriate toy for your dog’s chewing level.

It’s not just the pets that can get spoiled at Shop Dog Boutique. Pet lovers can find lots of fun items for themselves or the home. The Harry Barker line features adorable ceramic bowls and stylish canisters for holding food. Durable newsprint-designed mats will keep floors clean under your pet’s bowls. On the curve of a road in the southern part of Sioux Falls sits the home of Dennis Thum and Ellen Hohm Thum. It is

nestled into a development of twin homes, and Ellen says she knew she wanted that location even before all of the twin homes had been built.

“I was originally going to be at the top of the hill,” Ellen explains, “which would have given me a nice view of the city, but it also would have had me looking down everyone else’s backyards.”

She was living in a townhome not that far away at the time, around 2003, but she was looking for a different space. She had a friend who was also looking to move, and the two made a deal that when Ellen got her new place, her friend would buy Ellen’s old place. While Ellen really wanted that spot on the curve, it was already spoken for – or so she thought. It turns out the man who was going to be in that twin home had decided to buy a house instead. In what Ellen can only describe as a “God thing,” it turned out the man was buying her friend’s home…which opened up the spot on the curve for Ellen…and all three were happy.

Ellen definitely has a designer’s eye and, in fact, once debated whether to become an interior designer or a counselor. While she loved all the aspects of colors, fabrics, furniture and arranging, she knew her true calling was the counseling profession where she could help people build healthy lives. “I do still have a great passion for design, though,” she says with a smile.

and her baby grand piano..a piano which has been serviced by the same tuner out of Minneapolis for nearly 24 years. The design process started with a ceramic-topped dining room table from Italy with a painted fruit and vine border and a sturdy wrought iron base. From there, she started to assemble paint swatches (“I love Ralph Lauren colors,” she says) and picked the soft creme color for the ceiling first. After that, she added warm colors in browns and khakis for the walls, complemented with colors in furniture upholstery, rugs, lampshades and an extensive art collection.

Ellen also wanted to bring black into the design scheme to complement the piano. The fireplace insert is black, framed in the creme-colored wood and mantelpiece. The kitchen has black granite counters with warm red birch cabinetry. A distressed-look black molding sits atop the kitchen cupboards.

When asked to describe her own sense of style, Ellen says she’s a traditionalist. Then, she stops mid-sentence to ask her husband, Dennis, who replies, “Yes, Ellen is a traditionalist.”

The two were married in 2006. While marriage joined their lives, it also joined their design style, the special things they each had from the past, and the new memories they continue to make together. They each draw inspiration from the past and present, as well as from a spiritual connection.

Dennis is a long-time campus pastor at the University of Sioux Falls, and Ellen focuses on the mind, body and spirit in her counseling practice.

While the eye naturally goes to the oversized four-poster bed with beautifully-carved posts in the master suite, it is the artwork on the walls that holds the most meaning. The couple has traveled to Israel, and one wall features beautiful artwork with drawings of Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and the Wailing Wall.

On one of the living room walls hangs an antique map of Palestine from the 1700s, with an inset showing the lands of the tribes of Israel. Next to that is a colorful lithograph of the three kings’ visit to the newborn Christ child.

On the mantelpiece over the fireplace is an ornately-framed print

of Jesus kneeling in the Garden of Gethsemane. The glass-topped table in the center of the living room contains display space for items from their travels to Israel, including actual pictures of the Garden. Coins from Israel and pictures from their trip are scattered across the surface, with other unique artifacts like a small olive-tree carving of the Holy Family and a Herodian oil lamp with a certificate of authenticity dating it to the time of Christ.

Ellen has also brought the spiritual realm into the design with the addition of several Native American art pieces in the lower level of their home. “It’s my dream to have this room really be


all about Native American art,” she says. One wall features an early original print from Joanne Bird, and on another wall is a framed picture of an elaborate Native American headdress. With a closer look, you see that the raised design is made from clay. The artist then drizzled copper over the feathers, which was oxidized to give a turquoise hue to the design.

Throughout the home, the design is inspired by various collections.

“I admit it; I am a collector,” Ellen says smiling. The collections vary from rocks, which she has collected since childhood, to

artwork and from lamps to decorative boxes.Different sizes, shapes and textures of rocks are part of

tablescapes and line windowsills. Every room has more than one lamp that might be small with a beaded shade or tall with a fringed shade. But, each lamp fits the feel of the room, and the variances in lighting add to the warmth of the entire home.

Artwork takes center stage in many rooms, such as the striking relief sculpture of Beethoven that hangs on the wall behind the baby grand piano. Another relief sculpture by the same artist, Bill Mack, is of the female form and is prominently displayed above

the sunken tub in the master bath. A two-dimensional print by Mack hangs above the four-poster in the master bedroom.

A bear that stands about 2 feet high sits at one end of the dining room in what Ellen calls “the garden.” Plant stands, potted plants and little terrariums bring the outdoors in and give the friendly bear a comfortable place to rest. The design rights for this particular bear, by artist Lou Rankin, were sold to Hallmark, so Ellen also has the ornament version of her friendly bear.

Throughout the home are wonderful design elements created by antique books, family photos (Ellen has four sons and Dennis has three sons), things from the time Dennis spent as a Navy Chaplain, and keepsakes from Ellen’s father, who was a dentist, and grandfather, who was a pharmacist. She even has a Civil War photo of her great-great-grandfather.

While people can get caught up in a particular trend or can get overwhelmed with the notion of trying to “design” a room, it can actually be much simpler than people think, says Ellen.

“It is just about purchasing things you love,” she says. “Most people have a particular style and a love for certain colors, textures or items. Allow yourself to define what you love, and then it will all just naturally go together.”

Ellen adds that incorporating mementos like family pictures and heirlooms and collector items that have meaning to you add to the uniqueness of your home. “Dennis and I love and enjoy the warmth and comfort of our home. There is nothing either of us would change!”

Frito Lay Bars

2 10oz. bags of regular Frito Lay corn chips1 1/2 cups white corn syrup1 1/2 cups white sugar1 1/2 cups peanut butter1 cup butterscotch chips1 cup chocolate chips

Combine corn syrup and sugar and bring to a boil. Boil for one minute, then add peanut butter and mix well. Place corn chips in a large pan (12 x 15) evenly on bottom. Pour mixture evenly over corn chips. Melt butterscotch chips and drizzle on corn chips. Melt chocolate chips and drizzle on chips and spread lightly. Cool and cut into bars.

Cluster Cups

2 cups white chocolate4 cups cornflakes

Use a double boiler or put a heat proof bowl over a saucepan of just-simmering water. Make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Break the chocolate into small pieces and put it into the bowl of the top of the double-broiler. Stir gently over low heat until the chocolate has melted. Stir the chocolate and the cornflakes together in a large mixing bowl. Spoon the mixture into individual baking cups. Leave the clusters in the fridge for 3 hours, or until the chocolate has set.Optional: Add red sprinkles or small candies to the top to decorate. Or dark chocolate.

Peanut Butter Sandwich Cookies

1 cup butter flavored shortening1 cup creamy peanut butter1 cup packed brown sugar1 tsp. Vanilla extract3 eggs3 cups all purpose flour2 tsp. baking soda1/4 tsp. salt

Filling:1/2 cup creamy peanut butter3 cups confectioner’s sugar1 tsp. vanilla extract5 - 6 Tbsp. milk

In a mixing bowl, cream the shortening, peanut butter and sugars. Add vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture. Shape into one inch balls and place two inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten to 3/8” thickness with fork. Bake at 375˚ for 7 - 8 minutes or until golden. Cool on wire racks.

In a mixing bowl, beat filling ingredients until smooth. Spread on half of the cookies and top each with another cookie.

Day to remember? I offer a few humble suggestions below. The last time I wrote about Valentine dinners I stacked the deck and had already made plans for dinner on the beach in Puerto Vallarta. This year we’ll be celebrating in the Dominican Republic. While I recommend somewhere closer to the equator, there are many fine places for a romantic dinner right here in Sioux Falls.

Since you haven’t booked airline tickets yet, you can start trying for dinner reservations, but don’t wait, by the time this magazine hits the news stand, restaurants will already be booking up really quickly and since V-Day is on a Thursday this year, reservations will spill into the weekend. Take precautions and call your significant other’s favorite place now. Seriously, put down the magazine and call now. I’ll wait.

Did you also call the babysitter? If not, you may be too late for that as well. If you’ve ever shared the name of your best babysitter with anyone, they have already called her for February 14. Time to tap grandma and grandpa. Remember when you used to ask your mom for something? She’d say no, so you immediately started buttering up your dad. If you could get him to say yes before mom got to him, you were golden. Go straight to him and don’t stop until he’s agreed to take the kids.

There are a lot of romantic spots for dinner in Sioux Falls. I like the small, intimate places like K or Parker’s. With only a small number of tables you know that you will be taken care of. The wine lists are solid, the food is outstanding and they will make sure it is a night to remember. If your guy is the outdoorsy type, try Wild Sage. Trust me, the bison tenderloin or elk bolognese will put your great white hunter in the mood for romance.

The bigger places like Minerva’s or Carnaval are also a solid bet. If your guy scoffs at the idea of “meatless Mondays,” the constant parade of proteins at Carnaval will keep him smiling for days. For the pasta lover, any seat at Johnny Carino’s is a good one, but if you’re lucky enough to score one of the secluded tables with the curtains, you’ll be able to recreate the Bella Note scene from Lady and the Tramp. Come on, you know you want to. Go on, order the spaghetti!

If you’re looking for a great wine list to help set the mood, start with Spezia and ask Riccardo for a recommendation. Yes, that is the same Riccardo who writes the wine column in this magazine. He’s the general manager there and he’s a knowledgeable sommelier who won’t make you feel dumb for asking questions. And while the wine list has great bottles on the higher end of the price spectrum, he will help you find a great bottle at any price. And if it’s on his wine list, it is bound to be good, because he won’t sell you any wine that he wouldn’t drink himself.

All of those would make for a nice Valentine dinner. But I have a better idea for Valentine night. We’ll assume you’ve already conned your mom and dad into coming over to watch the kids. From there you just need to go one step further and get them to spend the night and send the kids to school on Friday morning.

looking for a nice room (perhaps with a jacuzzi tub.) Don’t bother calling the place with the water park where you went for junior’s birthday. The point is to get away from kids. Since the 14th of February is a weeknight, it’s likely you’ll both have to work the next day, so pack a bag with Friday’s work clothes for both of you. This night-out has no curfew and you won’t need a designated driver.

While you’re packing, grab the iPod with the aforementioned romantic playlist and a portable speaker of some kind. If you don’t have one, talk to your teenager. Chances are they have one or can at least point you in the right direction. Now, off to the liquor store! You’re looking for a bottle of wine for dinner and a bottle of bubbly for later. For dinner I’m going to recommend a bottle of Chianti. And since we all read Riccardo’s article a couple of months ago, you know to look for the black rooster on the neck of the bottle, right? I like Rocca delle Macie Chianti Classico. For the bubbly, I suggest Chandon Blanc de Noirs, but your favorite champagne, cava or Prosecco will do just fine.

Don’t forget wine glasses; you don’t want to drink the wine out of Styrofoam coffee cups! I like the little plastic wine glasses from GoVino. They are durable and cheap enough so if they do break, you won’t care. I always keep some in the suitcase, just in case. My favorite little wine shop at 41st and Minnesota has GoVino champagne flutes too, so pick up two of them as well.

Tell your beloved to meet you at the bar in the hotel lobby for

your rendezvous. If you want him to think you’re just meeting in the bar before dinner, that could add a nice little surprise when you go up to the room. This would be a good time to turn cell phone ringers off. After a drink, head up to the room. Skip room service and call for pizza. Not fancy enough for a Valentine’s Day you say? Really? Didn’t you go out for pizza when you were dating? Or call to have pizza delivered so you could snuggle in on a cold February night? If you play your cards right, this simple meal (with the bottle of Chianti) will be your new version of those nights so long ago, before kids and the mortgage and stress of constant email connections. That’s what I call a perfect evening. Set the alarm a little bit later than you usually get up (because today you don’t need to worry about getting the kids ready for school!)

Friday morning, you’re back to the daily grind, but you’ll know you’ve had one perfect evening. For a few hours you’ve escaped from the hectic schedule of daily life, and just enjoyed some time alone with someone special. Doesn’t that sound like a memorable Valentine’s Day?

A Valentine’s Dream:

The I talian Riviera


I fell in love with my wife at a mile-long beach on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I proposed to her in Oak Bluffs,

a quaint harbor on the north coast of Martha’s Vineyard. We honeymooned at a spa on the tranquil beaches of St. Martin. We have picnicked with baguettes and wine along the River Seine. And now, three children later, we live in Sioux Falls, home of the great waterfall. Needless to say, when I think about my wife, I have vivid memories of the ocean, the sea, the harbor, the river, and just about any form of water. As I look over at her right now, I laugh to myself about the fact that the only body of water that either of us has shared in recent years is the water splashed on us by our dog as we attempt to give him a bath. At times, when we are being doused by the huge drops of water, I squeeze my wife’s hand, close my eyes, and dream of the ocean mist brushing against my face, and for just a brief moment I am transported to one of the most romantic places in the world: the Italian Riviera.

The winding arc of coastline sweeping quietly from Ventimiglia to La Spezia is the defining mark of Italy’s Liguria region. This narrow strip of mountain-protected coastline can be divided into two quite distinct Rivieras. The western Riviera di Ponente (Riviera of the Setting Sun), which reaches from the French border to Genoa, has protected bays and wide sandy beaches and is generally more developed and commercialized than its counterpart to the east. The Ponente is home to the

fanciful seaside resorts of San Remo and Bordighera. Much of the eastward stretch on the Ponente coastline has been developed for the packs of sun worshipers who descend on it in the summer. I can see myself now, basking in the warm sunlight, listening to the gentle whisper of the waves; I can almost feel the warm ocean breeze… then I open my eyes to find that my wife is using her blow dryer and is pointing it at my face. As I gently redirect the dryer towards my wet dog, I continue dreaming…

East of Genoa, spanning the coastline as far as Portovenere, is the Riviera di Levante (Riviera of the Rising Sun). Its miniscule bays and inlets are steeper, sculpted by nature into rocky cliffs. The most dazzling of these awesome occurrences is Portofino, which is one of the most photographed villages in the world. One look is enough to tell you why: if you pull up to it by boat, chances are you’ll max out your memory card before you disembark. Brightly painted houses frame the port in a burst of color that becomes sheer enchantment at sunset. Farther along the coast are the Cinque Terre (“Five Lands”), a collective community of five fishing villages situated on bluffs above the sea. Here are Liguria’s most uncrowded beaches, picturesque village squares, and best views. The only view from my bathroom window is bleak at best, especially this time of year when the snow still covers most of my grass and the trees have shrunk down to mere skinny branches. Just when reality starts

to sink in, the sun pokes through the drab sky and rekindles my visions of tender sunshine and romantic seascapes…

Set in the heart of the Riviera region is Genoa, Italy’s largest commercial port, where majestic Renaissance palaces attest to the wealth of the city’s seafaring past. Every schoolchild knows Genoa as the birthplace of Christopher Columbus and despite the city’s considerable charm, most visitors to Liguria are more interested in the less-historic waters found along the coast. Another attraction in this area of Italy, like all other regions in the country is, of course, the food! Pasta tubes called macheronis were cooked in the 13th century by the Genoese, who spread the cult of noodles to other Italian ports and over the Apennines to Emilia Romagna. Liguria remains an active producer of pasta, though based almost entirely on wheat. Preferred with pesto are slender trenette noodles. Pesto sauce is made by pounding fresh basil in mortar with garlic and pine nuts (or walnuts), then blending in olive oil and grated Pecorino Sardo and Parmigiano Reggiano in equal parts. Some include potatoes or green beans with the noodles. The region also has its own pizza dell’Andrea (after the heroic Admiral Andrea Doria) with onions, garlic, tomatoes, black olives, and anchovies, or with sardines. I can almost smell it now, the sweet aroma of onions and the strength of the garlic. Again, I open my eyes to see my wife in the kitchen, trying a new recipe. After helping her and, of course, cleaning up, I try yet again to drift away to that beautiful paradise…

When it comes to wine, the region of Liguria isn’t very well known for its grape-growing areas. It is mostly known for its pastas and fresh seafood. However, when shopping around for a good Italian wine that will accompany, let’s say, a traditional Ligurian meal, then look no further than Venice (another seafaring Italian city on the opposite coast) where the Pinot Grigio is king and is ideal for seafood and wine pairing. But let’s not forget Tuscany, just south of Liguria, where the white grape Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the natural choice when preparing and serving seafood. When my love and I are drinking white wine, it’s usually a crisp Pinot Grigio. If you close your eyes, you can almost here the gentle roar of the ocean as you swirl your glass…

Would I love to be on the Italian Riviera right now, taking in all of the pleasures and romance that it offers? You bet I would, but for now, I’ll continue dreaming because the truth is, there’s no where else in the world I’d rather be than with my wife, three sons, and, yes, my dog, on Valentine’s Day. Revolt of 1680. The Plaza is alive during the Fiesta weekend with parades, ceremonies, mariachi music, Spanish dancing, and more. The Fiesta closes with a candle-lit walk through the historic downtown streets to the Cross of the Martyrs.

Another National Historic Landmark located in Santa Fe is the San Miguel Mission. It is the oldest church in the United States and sits within the Plaza. Its appearance today is much the same as when it was founded in 1797, and the inside of the church has never been repainted. The St. Francis Cathedral is also a very popular attraction in town, made up of an impressive mixture of three architectural styles including Adobe, French-Romanesque, and Modern. The Adobe style includes the connected Conquistadora Chapel, which was built in 1714 and is home to La Conquistadora, Our Lady of Conquering Love, the country’s oldest Madonna. The French-Romanesque style includes the crypt of Archbishop Lamy, Santa Fe’s first archbishop who also commissioned the main structure. The Modern style includes the 1967 addition of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. A memorable feature of this building consists of several stained glass windows imported from France.

The Santa Fe area attracted a number of artists in the early 20th century, one of them being Georgia O’Keeffe. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum opened to the public in 1997, and is the only museum in the world dedicated to an internationally known American female artist. It is also the most visited art museum in the state of New Mexico. With over 3,000 works in the Museum’s collection, it is the largest single archive of O’Keeffe’s work in the world. Also exhibited are works by other artists such as Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol. Santa Fe is a designated UNESCO Creative City, and has an abundant art scene. Native American Indian arts and crafts are especially popular, as well as “Anglo” art. Take a stroll along historic Canyon Road, which is nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This picturesque trail is shaded by huge chestnut trees and is lined for half a mile with more than a hundred galleries, jewelry stores, home furnishing shops, clothing boutiques, artist studios, and gourmet


restaurants. With hidden courtyards, musical fountains, and benches with a magnificent view, Canyon Road has enough attractions to make it a day-long event. Travelers can even take the occasional break and relax as they watch one of the many talented painters and sculptors who work in the studios create their masterpieces out in the open public.

One of the world’s leading opera companies resides in Santa Fe, and was founded by Igor Stravinsky. The Santa Fe Opera has had a tremendous influence on the musical community and is known around the world for staging American and even world premiers of new works. It is partially “open air”, which offers opera goers some very attractive views of the Jemex Mountains as a backdrop to whatever the main attraction might be on stage.

Santa Fe is also one of the greatest culinary capitals in the world, and offers a plethora of dining options that are irresistible. Some of the finest chefs in the world are attracted to the city of Santa Fe and have made it their permanent residence as they master their craft using the local and distinct flavors. New Mexico is known for its spicy, Southwestern food including green and red chiles, enchiladas, sopapillas, and many custom dishes. Most restaurants will ask what style of chile their guests would like, green or red. Those who want to try a mixture of both red and green chile peppers can ask for their dish to be “Christmas”.

Nearby is the Santa Fe Ski Basin, where adventurists can partake in year-round fun. The lifts here often operate during the summer as well, taking visitors up to near the top of Tesuque Peak, which is about 12,000 feet high; making for some spectacular views. The road that leads to the ski area goes through an aspen grove stretch which attracts many people during the fall with its breathtakingly colorful foliage. Trailheads along the way lead into some interesting Nordic ski tracks, as well as the Santa Fe National Forest, where there are a variety of recreational outdoor activities to enjoy. Hiking, cycling, and horseback riding are some of the most popular things to do, all surrounded by clean and crisp air, beautiful skies and sunsets that will make anyone gasp in awe.

Baby Boomers – the largest population group in the United States – share common memories of hula hoops, rock ‘n’

roll, record albums and TV sit-coms. Unfortunately, members of this generation born between 1945 and 1965 also share a higher risk of liver damage due to hepatitis C.

In fact, hepatitis C is a leading cause of liver cancer and the leading cause of liver transplants. “People with hepatitis C often have no symptoms and can live with an infection for decades without feeling ill,” Dr. Elgouhari said.

The liver has many functions, but its main role is to filter blood from the digestive tract before it goes to the rest of the body. The liver detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. It also produces proteins which are important for blood clotting and other functions. “There is no replacement for the human liver,” Dr. Elgouhari said. There are no medical procedures or treatments which can provide liver function, for example, in the way that dialysis can substitute for kidney function. “The only cure for liver failure is a liver transplant.”

More than 75 percent of adults with hepatitis C were born from 1945 through 1965, and most don’t know they are infected. Baby Boomers are five times more likely to be infected with hepatitis C than other population groups. Yet serious complications for this silent disease are preventable through appropriate treatment. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends that everyone born between 1945 and 1965 have a one-time blood test for hepatitis C.

“There are a lot of people in our region who have a hepatitis C infection, and don’t even know it,” Dr. Elgouhari said.

Why are Baby Boomers at higher risk? It’s believed that many people became infected decades ago, in the 1970s and 1980s, when rates of hepatitis C were the highest. Hepatitis

C is primarily spread through contact with blood from an infected person. Possible ways of infection include receiving contaminated blood and blood products before widespread screening of the blood supply began in 1992 and universal precautions were adopted, or injecting drugs, even if only once in the past. Still, many Baby Boomers with hepatitis C do not know how or when they were infected.

In addition to Baby Boomers, anyone who received a blood transfusion before July 1992, and anyone who has a history of IV drug use – even one time – should be screened with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) test, also known as the hepatitis C antibody test. It’s a simple blood

test performed at a physician’s clinic.New medications have recently been approved by the FDA,

making treatment more effective than ever. “If treatment is effective, it essentially cures hepatitis C, and a patient’s risk for liver failure and liver-related death goes down significantly,” Dr. Elgouhari said. “Our goal is to catch hepatitis C early – before it can cause significant liver damage. If you believe you might be at risk for hepatitis C, ask your primary care provider about the one-time blood test to check for this virus.”

Valentine’s Day Crafts For Kids

52 Reasons Why I Love you

Materials needed: A deck of cards, sandpaper, hole punch, two

1-inch binder rings, adhesive labels that will fit on the cards, and a black marker.

Instructions: Using adhesive labels, have your child write out with a black marker, 52

separate reasons why they love the person who will receive the gift. There should be 52 labels now, ready to peel off and stick to the face side of each card in the deck (except for the joker cards.) Using a hole punch, create two holes in each card, lining the holes up in the same spot every time. Bind your cards together with binder rings, leaving the joker cards out of the bunch. Make the front and back covers out of the joker cards, using an adhesive label to create the title cover, “52 reasons why I love you”, and have your child decorate the rest of the covers with markers, stickers, or whatever else you might want to use. Feel free to jazz it up a bit with ribbon, twine, or photographs of your child and the person receiving the gift throughout the card deck to personalize it even more!

Materials needed: Red paint, white construction paper,

and a marker or letter stamps.

Instructions: Be sure to have a surface prepared for

a potential mess. Fold a white piece of construction paper in half, creating the shape of a card. Place the card with the crease at the bottom. Have your child place their hands in red paint, making sure to cover the entire palm and every finger. Show them how to make a heart with their thumbs and forefingers, and guide their hands onto the folded paper, making sure every finger fits onto the white canvas and an upside-down heart appears in the middle of the two hands. If this doesn’t work out the first time around, encourage your child to keep trying on new pieces of paper until they are happy with their card. Wait for the paint to dry, then write a Valentine’s day message inside the heart. The hands will be facing down, with the tips of the painted fingers at the opening of the card. Let your child get creative with markers, stickers, stamps, or anything else they might want to use on the cover and inside of the card.

Materials needed: Pink craft foam, large heart-

shaped cookie cutter, scissors, craft knife, pencil, 1 drinking straw, 2 pink fluffy feathers, and glue.

Instructions: Using a pencil, trace two

heart-shaped cookie cutters onto the pink craft foam. Cut the heart shapes out. Take a drinking straw and lay it across one of the hearts, placing it at an angle. Hold the straw in place and use a pencil to mark a dot at the entry and exit points where the straw will go through the heart. This will be where the “arrow” goes. Cut slits in the heart using a craft knife and insert the straw through, making sure the outside edges of the heart are on top of the straw. Cut a small triangle out of the pink craft foam. Take the left end of the straw and cut a short slit down the center. Insert the triangle into this slit and add some craft glue. This is the point of the arrow. Place some craft glue inside the right end of the straw and insert the two feathers. Take the second pink foam heart shape and line the top humps of the heart with craft glue. Line up the first heart that has the straw through it exactly with the second heart and let the glue dry. Once it is completely dry, open the bottom of the heart and write a Valentine’s day message inside.

Materials needed: Stapler, glue, ribbon, scissors,

hole punch, construction or scrapbooking paper of various colors and patterns.

Instructions: Cut seven 1” x 12” pieces from

various paper colors and patterns. Take four of these pieces and cut them so they are 8” and 4” lengths. This creates four 4” pieces and four 8” pieces. Take the remaining three strips and cut them into 6” pieces, creating six 6” pieces total. Align seven of these strips in the following order: 8”, 6”, 4”, 6”, 4”, 6”, 8”. Staple the bottoms of the first four strips together with all of them facing the same direction. Take the remaining three strips and staple the bottom ends together, making sure they face in the opposite direction of the first four strips. Now, staple all of the strips together one more time on the bottom. On the left side, staple the 8”, the 6” and the 4” strips together at the top. Repeat this step on the right side, leaving the middle 6” strip unattached and sticking straight up. Take the tops of the stapled strips and curve them in on both sides of the middle strip, making a heart shape. Glue the heart shape in place to the center of the 6” strip and let dry. Your heart is now complete. You may use glue instead of a stapler if you have the time and the patience to let it dry each time. Repeat these instructions entirely for each paper heart you would like to make. Once you have your desired amount, punch a hole in the top of each center strip and thread some ribbon through to hang and enjoy for the holiday.

When you enter the room of two-year-old Nora Crotty, it’s like stepping back in time to a nursery you might have

seen in the early 1900s, with pale pink walls and lace curtains covering the windows.

Nora’s mom, Naomi, says she doesn’t consider herself a

floral bedding. Naomi says some friends gave them the crib, and it originally came from Germany.

A little wood rocker sits opposite the crib, and is just the right size for Nora to sit and rock with one of her teddy bears or dolls. There is also a larger, overstuffed pink chair perfect for Nora to climb up on mom’s or dad’s lap for a bedtime story.

In the corner stands a tall brass bird cage with two little white doves inside. This came from Naomi’s mom’s house.

“This is totally the style of her house,” she says. Naomi adds that Nora and big sister Julia, age 6, love to take the doves out and play with them.

Many of the pieces in the girls’ rooms came by way of Naomi’s mom. “My mom loves to find bargains,” she says smiling.

Other accessories in Nora’s room tie the timeless theme together, such as the little lamp with beaded lamp shade, the

wood rocking horse and the topiary of ivy and white roses that sits atop the dresser, which doubles as a changing table.

Naomi tarnished the handles of the dresser to adapt it to the vintage look of the room. She likes the idea of using the dresser with a cushioned pad rather than a more traditional changing table. “I like having everything put away and out of sight,” she says, “instead of an open changing table where you see everything.”

The roomy dresser will be perfect as Nora gets a little older and the changing pad is no longer needed. The crib will eventually transition to a toddler bed.

Naomi says she is happy they went with a classic look instead of a traditional baby nursery design. “As she gets older, we don’t have to worry about repainting or changing the design. It’s still a pretty, girly room she can enjoy for a long time.”

This app is one of the most frequently opened apps by our daughter, who is almost 2 years old. The app features approximately 65 plus, well-known and loved kids songs. For example, the “Eensy Weensy Spider,” “Farmer In the Dell,” “London Bridges,” “Wheels on the Bus,” and “Row Row Row Your Boat” just to name a few. The songs are organized in alphabetical order, making it easy for moms and dads to help find the song their child wants quickly. When your child clicks on the song they want, the page will show a picture that matches the song and also the lyrics. What makes this app different from other kid song apps that I’ve used is the limited animation, chance for interaction/game playing while the song is going and multiple graphics. It is a wonderful app, with a wealth of well-loved songs that hold my child’s attention without all the extra pizazz.

You’ve most likely all heard, and or played the addicting game Fruit Ninja before. This app is very similar to Fruit Ninja, however it adds an educational spin and also simplifies and slows down the original Fruit Ninja game for younger users. Users have two ways they can play the game. The first way is in the “play” mode where you can pick from six different categories: fruits, colors, numbers, shapes, vegetables, and food. In the play mode, it is very similar to Fruit Ninja - players are able to slash the objects, such as food, on the screen; users slash realistic looking hamburgers, fries, cake, lollipops, etc. The speed is greatly reduced from the Fruit Ninja version and does a good job working on improving younger children’s motor skills and keeping their concentration. The learning mode is great for younger children, primarily toddlers, on increasing their vocabulary. When in the learning mode you are able to pick from the same six categories listed above. In each category there are approximately 20 realistic looking objects that flash on the screen. Users slash the object at the same time that the voice teaches what the moving object is. Before children are able to slice the object, the voice will say what it is and show a picture, then it goes into the mode where the user can slash what they just learned. Before the app goes onto the next object to teach, it reinforces and reteaches it a second time by quickly flashing a picture of what they just learned on the screen and saying its name one more time.

This is one of my favorite new apps as a teacher and also one loved by my students. Growing up, I recall my teacher pulling out paper flashcards and often having students race against one another as to who could solve the math problem first. This app is set up with the same concept in mind. Two children play this app at the same time, where both players race to see who can solve the multiplication or addition problem first. You can pick from multiplying numbers with the fact families being randomized 1-8 or 1-12. The same is true for addition, allowing for more targeting practice for the correct skill level of your children or student. Students can either play in battle mode, where they race to answer the same problem, or they can play in cooperative mode, where they work independently for a team score. Students enter their answer into a realistic and easy to use calculator. There is a much more advanced level of play available for purchase, $0.99, where students can add or multiply positive and negative numbers. I’ve been impressed with how much my students have enjoyed this game and love that it can be used either in a competitive fashion or just good practice with a friend.

A Secure Place to Explore: Tips for Making Your Home Safe for Children

Through the eyes of a child, a home is a playground full of exciting areas to discover. While exploration is part of the

way a child learns, parents need to make sure that their children encounter a safe environment, says Amy Heisinger, family life educator supervisor at Sanford Children’s CHILD Services.

“Household accidents kill more children every year than all of the childhood diseases combined,” says Heisinger. “Kids are natural explorers, so we need to make sure they can explore safely at home.”

home safety ChecklistWhen a small child will be living in your home, take a look at

every room to see it from the perspective of a child. Get down on hands and knees and look at everything within reach...just like a child.

And this needs to be done regularly as the child gets older. “Young children and toddlers can develop new skills overnight,”

says Heisinger. “All of a sudden they can climb, turn a knob or reach something and they are unaware it’s a dangerous situation.”

While each home is unique, some immediate changes will make the environment safer.• Use safety equipment properly: Install items like outlet covers,

cabinet locks, blind cord shorteners, safety gates and window guards.

• Secure things that move. Furniture can be anchored to the wall and rugs should be attached to the floor.

• Infants should sleep on their backs in a crib or bassinet with a firm mattress and a clean fitted sheet and no blankets. Stuffed animals, bumpers, pillows or other soft materials need to be removed.

• Be careful with used or borrowed cribs to make sure that they meet safety standards. Create a safe zone around the crib by positioning it away from windows, heaters, lamps, wall decorations, cords and furniture your child could climb on.

a safer BathroomThe bathroom is the number one place injuries occur in

the home, says Heisinger. Each year in the United States, over 23,000 children ages four and under will be injured in bathroom-related accidents.

“The bathroom is just an endless supply of things that children don’t need to get their hands on,” says Heisinger.

Children are fascinated with water, but usually don’t understand its danger. Just a few inches of water can lead to drowning. It’s best to empty tubs or basins immediately after use and keep the toilet closed with a lock on the seat.

To prevent burns, water heaters should be set below 120 degrees. Parents should fully fill the tub with water and check temperatures before placing a child in the tub.

Non-stick mats inside the tub and a dry floor will help prevent slips and falls. Encouraging children to sit in the tub and to walk slowly on bathroom floors, will also prevent injury from falling.

Alma Sehovic—Helping Others Find Puppy Loveby adrienne McKeoWn

When Alma Sehovic was 14-years-old, she fell in love. However, her parents wouldn’t allow her to bring her new

love home. So, like many love-struck teenagers, Sehovic found an alternative way to pursue the desires of her heart. She began to volunteer for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

See, the love in Alma’s heart belonged to critters of the four-legged kind, but her parents wouldn’t allow her to have a pet at home. So to get her pet “fix,” she started volunteering at the shelter. These days, Sehovic has turned her love of animals into her career, and as the Volunteer Coordinator for the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society, she has the opportunity to help others put their passion for animals to work.

We sat down with Sehovic to learn more about the Humane Society and how they are assisting local animals and people connect and find true puppy—or kitty—love.

have you always been an animal lover?Yes, I always have been. I love all kinds of animals—dogs, cats,

rabbits, guinea pigs. I love them all.

so how many pets do you have at home?I have one dog because I rent a home and can only have one.

Otherwise, I would for sure be taking more home with me. My dog is a Border Collie mix. She’s named Una, and she’s about 7 1/2-years-old. She came in when she was about three years of age. She was not what I had pictured in my mind, but I just fell in love with her personality. She retrieves, she fetches, she’s extremely vocal, and she’s protective. She’s just really fun and

feisty! They choose you, I think. I took her home for an overnight stay, or so I thought, and she ended up staying forever.

that’s a great love story. please tell us a little bit about the sioux Falls area humane society. What kinds of animals do you have here?

We mostly take in dogs and cats, but we also take in rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, mice, chinchillas, reptiles, and others. A few years back, we had a 7 1/2 foot boa constrictor here. I’ve seen two tarantulas and at least 20 species of snakes. We’ve also had lizards and geckos and fish and birds. We’re more equipped to handle the dogs and cats and rabbits, but we can take them all.

What is the most unusual animal you’ve ever taken in?Our humane officer responds to stray calls outside of the city

limits, and she has brought in an ostrich and a llama.

Wow! that’s not something you hear about every day in south dakota. so how many animals do you typically have here at one time?

It varies quite a bit, to be honest. We typically do between 40 and 50 adoptions over the weekend because those are our busiest days. Today we have 152 pets in this building—58 cats, 71 dogs, and 23 small animals. That’s not counting the pets that are out in foster care homes.

Where do all of these animals come from?A lot of them are strays, but some are given up by their owners

for various reasons. Maybe the owners have to move or they can no longer afford the pet or they’re allergic. For whatever reason, they want to give the pet up for adoption. And I’d rather they bring the pets here or to another safe shelter rather than drop them off in the middle of nowhere.

having a pet can get expensive, especially when it comes to buying food. how much food do you go through to feed this many animals?

For the dogs alone, we go through about 200 pounds a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

one of the common beliefs about shelters is that the pets are given a month, and if they’re not adopted by that time, they’ll be put down. Is that true?

That is a very common misconception that I hear all the time, but it’s not true. Right now, we have a dog that has been here since August, and we had one lab that had been here for almost a year. We have Luigi and Vicki—two cats—who have been here for a couple of months, too. We don’t give animals a month and then put them down. That’s not how it works.

that’s good to know. I’m guessing that extended stays aren’t the norm, though, so how long is the average stay?

Adult cats stay a few weeks. The average for the dogs is

probably a week and a half to two weeks, but it depends on the breed. With the dogs, puppies get adopted the fastest, and then the small breeds of dogs. Pit bulls and black labs tend to stay here the longest.

Can you please walk us through the adoption process? how easy is it to adopt a new pet?

People wanting to adopt can stop in and spend some time here getting to know the pet they think they’d like to adopt. Then they fill out an application and our “matchmakers”—our adoption counselors—will make sure that the pet is a good fit for the potential owners. Our counselors have a lot of experience and know what kind of matches will work. There is also a background check on the adopters to check for animal cruelty. Once approved, you can take your pet home the same day! All together, an adoption typically takes around 30 minutes. However, adopters do have to sign a spay/neuter agreement that states they will get the pet altered once they take the pet home.

Many people think of the humane society as a shelter, but you do a lot more than just provide shelter. Can you please tell us a little bit more about your other programs, specifically pet therapy and paroled pups?

Pet Therapy is a program where trained volunteers take puppies that are six months or younger out to local nursing

homes or retirement homes to interact with the residents for a couple of hours. It’s really fulfilling and it helps the residents as well as the puppies. These residents may not remember much about their lives at the moment, but they’ll remember the dog they had when they were five-years-old. I’m so grateful for our volunteers that do this!

Paroled Pups is a program where active dogs that do not do well being kenneled go up to the penitentiary and the inmates train them basic commands and walk them as much as they can. When the dogs get back here, the hope is that they’ll be more adoptable because they won’t be as anxious. It’s great for the inmates because it gives them a chance to give back to the community, and it’s great for the dogs.

those both sound like really good programs. speaking of the community, there are many people who are pet lovers who can’t take a pet home with them. are there other ways they can help out?

Definitely. They can come down and pet the cats or walk the dogs. They can also apply to become a permanent volunteer. After they take the orientation class, they can go into the more detailed volunteer jobs like pet therapy and grooming. There are a lot of things they can do here.

There are also many things that the public can donate that they might not even think about. We always take food for the pets, but we also need things like bleach, dish soap, air fresheners, old towels, and toys like tennis balls and rope toys. There are a lot of things that people might throw away that we might have a use for. Even older vacuum cleaners—we go through a lot of vacuums—and old furniture is needed for the Feline & Friends room. And aside from the material donations, we also have fundraising events throughout the year. For Valentine’s Day, we have Cupcakes for Critters coming up. People can call here to pre-order cupcakes from a few different businesses and then pick them up just in time for the holiday. The proceeds will benefit the animals here at the shelter.

It’s obvious you have a real passion for your work. What is the most rewarding part about your job?

Knowing that the animals are safe and finding them a home. I love when a family or a person adopts a pet and they have that smile on their face and they are just so excited because they can’t wait to start their new life with that animal. They crave that companionship, and they can’t wait to go jogging more or can’t wait to get out there more with that pet. It really comes down to love.

Unconditional love can be hard to find. Dependable, reliable and

non-judgmental are all words to describe my best friend. Now

I have to tell you that it involves a wet kiss from time to time and it

may also involve sharing my lunch! But when the weather is cold or

the cows are out, Millie is always there.

We brought Millie into our family 13 years ago, as a present

for Alex, when he was five years old. She was small, short haired

and wiggled constantly. Jack Russell Terriers are high energy,

independent dogs. Just what a house with 2 boys, 2 dogs and a cat

needed! Maybe a blender on high speed was closer to the truth.

Dogs are funny creatures at times. She was supposed to be the boys’

best friend, but dogs are “suck ups” and want to be with whomever

makes them mind the most. She wanted to hang out with the alpha...

me! She truly loves us all, but if I was outside, she was outside.

Jack Russell Terriers are supposed to be varmint dogs. Their

minds are focused on chasing mice, gophers, squirrels and an

occasional cat. But Millie is a cow dog. She is 9 pounds of cow

herding dynamite. It is her passion to bark and chase the Black

Angus cows. No fear, but at times great frustration with why cows

just won’t listen without having to nip at their legs. It may be a little

bit embarrassing to the cows to admit, but they are afraid of her.

It’s tough to find a traveling partner that does not care what the

destination is or which car we take. She does care if there is food

available and may insist that I share at least a small bite.

Millie is not particular, but very determined to be the royal taste

tester. Once again she would lay her life down for me.

The little brown dog is tough. She does not need a sweater or

boots. Those are for the city dogs.

Mud and muck is good aromatherapy and leaving foot prints in

the house is just a daily chore. But with all things, she is getting old.

When you have a great friend like her, it is tough to see them

slow down. Despite 6 pills for her heart every day, she was sorting

the cows Sunday. She was not quite as quick or as stern with them,

but the mind was willing. It took her a few hours to rest, but what

a great day.

It is important that we take care of her as she gets older. She

has been a faithful servant and boss. The medications today have

extended her life and given her great quality. It is amazing what we

can do today, to keep them playing and spending good time with us.

She has been a great companion, who loves being with us. That

bond is strong, enriching and filled with happiness. If you have had

a great pal, you know how I feel.

The longest labor strike in the history of Sioux Falls began on March 9, 1935, during the depths of the Great Depression and pitted pro-union employees against pro-

company employees. More than 700 employees ceased work and occupied the John Morrell Company Packing Plant. The striking employees were convinced that management was trying to quash their nascent union, Local 304. The union insisted on an end to arbitrary layoffs, respect for departmental seniority, and recognition of Local 304 as a bargaining force.

Although the union’s demands were not met, the striking workers withdrew peacefully from the plant after Governor Tom Berry declared martial law and ordered units of the South Dakota National Guard to the scene. However, during the night of July 18, union members established picket lines at both the front and back entrances to the Morrell Plant.

The next morning, Friday, July 19, about 200 pro-company employees, members of the Morrell Employees Association, gathered at the Cataract Hotel and made plans to break through the picket lines and enter the packing facility. Marching across the Eighth Street bridge, association members stopped at the intersection of Sixth Street and Weber Avenue where company loyalists handed them oak clubs made from stairway banister rungs.

As they moved north on Weber Avenue, Sam Twedell, business agent for Local 304, left the plant picket line and walked out to meet them. He was struck on the back of the head with a gas pipe wielded by an association member. Bleeding, Twedell managed to return to the picket line where his fellow pro-union workers, armed with canes, sticks, and ball bats, waited for a confrontation with association members. In the violent melee that ensued, called “Bloody Friday,” 60 pro-company men broke through the picket lines and entered the plant. However, the main body of the association men retreated when pelted with broken bricks stockpiled nearby. No one was seriously injured in the struggle, but 54 men required hospitalization.

Although picketing continued, bona fide Morrell employees were permitted to enter the plant. On March 10, 1937, a settlement was reached, and Local 304 was recognized as a legitimate bargaining power. The strike made labor a viable force in Sioux Falls, and a permanent and significant factor in the economic life of the city.
