booking tips

Here are some tips to help you plan a successful trip to the snow.

book early

Bookings are confirmed on a first come basis. If you book at the last minute we cannot guarantee your preferred lesson time or requested rental requirements. This is especially true in our peak periods.

Gather and submit all student information as soon as possible

As soon as we receive all your information we can move forward with your booking by securing your instructors / printing out tickets with student information attached and entering all the required student information onto rental profiles. As you can imagine this is a time consuming process so we appreciate your help in delivering all the information to us in a timely manner.

allow plenty of time for travel and ticket/rental

collection

As you would be fully aware organising students on an away trip takes a lot of patience and generally has its fair share of unexpected delays, allow plenty of time to travel to the resort/ collect National Park passes and lift tickets. Getting students through equipment and/or clothing hire is a lengthy process and takes more time than you may think, please allow at least 1.5hrs.

It is a good idea if you are getting into your accommodation the afternoon prior, to arrange to collect your tickets for the next day (and rental equipment if time allows).

Ticket office and hire/retail hours during winter

Jindabyne Office: Peak: 7.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Thursday 7.00am – 8.00pm Friday to Sunday

Friday Flat Office: Peak: 8.00am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday 7.30am – 5.30pm Saturday 7.30am – 7.30pm Sunday

Valley Terminal Office: Peak: 8.00am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday 7.30am – 5.30pm Saturday 7.30am – 7.30pm Sunday

Friday Flat Hire/Retail: Peak: 8.00am – 5.30pm Monday to Friday 7.30am – 5.30pm Saturday 7.30am – 7.30pm Sunday

Familiarise yourself with the resort facilities

This year we have produced a group orientation map outlining all the major outlets you need to navigate your group around as well as the locations of essential facilities.

Send a check list of essential items home to students

We have compiled an “Essentials” list for you on page 11. This covers the basics to help students and teaching staff alike to have an enjoyable time in the snow.

Remember: If anything has been forgotten, our Thredbo Sports Retail outlets offer a wide selection of competitively priced items.

check our events calendar prior to choosing a date

Thredbo plays host to many events during the winter season, it is well worth checking out what is happening over the season so you are able to make an informed decision when planning your trip dates.

Take advantage of the Thredbo leisure centre

Treat your group to some relaxation after a hard day on the slopes.

This year the Thredbo leisure centre heated pool and waterslide is Free for school groups with a valid ski or board lift or lift lesson pass. Excludes mission inflatable and tornado, though these can be booked for your group at an extra group price.Bookings are essential.

Free Twilight riding

Stay around and ride longer every Thursday and Saturday evening in July and August. Friday Flat remains open until 7.30pm and it’s free from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Get your park entry in Jindabyne

It is much easier and efficient to purchase your Park Entry at either the Snowy Mountains Visitor Centre on Kosciuszko Road (located between the Old town centre and Nuggets crossing shopping centre) or our Jindabyne ticket Office, located at Nuggets’ crossing. This allows your bus to simply drive through the Express lane at the park gates and avoids traffic delays at the gate.

lost passes

It is recommended that the trip organiser keeps a spread sheet of all RFID numbers and the student name that each pass is allocated to. Better still if the group is of an age where students are carrying mobile phones ask them to take a picture of their pass or write down the number somewhere safe. If we do not know which RFID card has been lost/allocated to which student, we can not cancel the live pass and you will need to purchase another pass at the full group rate.

pre book school lunches on the hill - new for 2013

Make lunch time simple and keep your group together with our school group lunches. Our chef has come up with some options to suit most tastes and will get students refueled after a morning out on the snow. Lunch time slots are pre booked in the indoor upstairs area of our Friday Flat Bistro, conveniently located at the bottom of the Friday Flat beginner area.

check out our “buy early and Save” products online

Our group rates start at a minimum of 20 pax, though there are still some great savings to be found if you are only bringing a small group of students to the snow.

• If you book 1 day in advance you can get 10% off retail products.

• If you book 14 days in advance you receive 15% off retail products.

Though no other group conditions apply to the Buy Early and Save products it makes a great option for small groups.

Visit our eStore at Thredbo.com.au for more Information.

What to bring

You may have some students and teachers who are packing for the snow for the very first time. We have put together a list of all of the recommended items required for an enjoyable and warm trip to Thredbo Resort. If you arrive and realise you forgot something, don’t worry, we have a number of retail outlets, equipment rental and select clothing rental that may stock what you need.

Also, this year our Retail Department has put together a special “Essentials” package of goggles and gloves for $60. This package can only be pre purchased and will be awaiting collection with student/teacher names prior to arrival.

• Beanie • Neck gaiter/warmer • Goggles • Waterproof gloves • Waterproof winter boots or shoes with good treads • Bathing suit • Ski socks • Sunglasses • Sunscreen • Lip balm • Ski pants • Long underwear/thermals • Ski parka or waterproof jacket • Camera • Emergency numbers / Medicare number• Ski or snowboard boots • Skis and poles or snowboard

Remember to dress in warm layers. Wear layers of polypropylene, silk or wool, rather than cotton next to the skin and then put on waterproof outerwear.

When purchasing socks, it is advisable to select ones that are specifically designed for skiing and boarding. They will keep your feet warmer and dryer than regular socks. Only ever wear one pair of socks at a time.

The weather in the mountains is always variable. As most of your body heat can be lost through the top of your head ensure that you always have a beanie or hat with you.

risk analysis & Management System (raMS) for Schools

With increasing emphasis being placed on Risk Management, and with regard to recent guidelines that have been released by the Department of Education and Training (DET) in relation to school groups, Kosciuszko Thredbo Pty Ltd (KT) has developed this RAMS (Risk Analysis & Management System) tool to assist schools in completing their own risk assessments.

Download the RAMS tool via this link: http://www.thredbo.com.au/for-groups/schools/ KT would like to express that the views or comments listed above do not diminish the group/s or individual’s responsibility to act in a manner appropriate to create a safe environment for all, including the supervision of students whilst they are not in the care of KT staff, at times teachers will have to assist students when participating in certain activities, like the use of the lifts, bobsled and the leisure Centre. KT prides itself in endeavoring to remove or minimise all foreseeable hazards.

Department of education and Training (DeT) Guidelines for Snow Sports

On 23rd August 2011, the NSW Department of Education and Training released a set of guidelines for schools conducting excursions where students will participate in a Snow Sports activity. These guidelines can be accessed by clicking here. http://www.sports.det.nsw.edu.au/spguide/activities/snowsports/snowsports.php

KT strongly recommends that all schools assessing feasibility of an excursion visiting the NSW Snowfields; reads and fully understands these guidelines.

For schools that have previously visited Thredbo, there are 3 principle points of difference for trips being conducted from 2012 onwards. These are;

Creation of a student manifest containing key information about each participant on the excursion.

Student ID cards to be worn by each student whilst within the national park. Required information to be displayed on these cards is detailed in the guidelines.

It is mandatory for all novice skiers and snowboarders to participate in afternoon lessons. As per the self-evaluation guide in the DET guidelines, KT expects that most novice skiers/snowboarders would be able to competently ride a beginner lift by the second afternoon of a snow trip.

Any further questions regarding these guidelines should be forwarded to [email protected]

ALPINE RESPONSIBILITY CODERegardless of how you enjoy your snow sport, always show courtesy to others and be aware that there are inherent risks in all snow recreational activities that common sense, protective equipment and personal awareness can reduce. These risks include rapid changes in the weather, visibility and surface conditions, as well as natural and artificial hazards such as

rocks, trees, stumps, vehicles, lift towers, snow fences and snowmaking equipment.

Observe the code and share with others the responsibility for a great experience.

1. Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.

2. Take lessons from professional instructors to learn and progress.

3. Use appropriate protective equipment to minimise the risk of injury.

4. Before using any lift you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

5. Observe and obey all signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails or runs.

6. Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

7. Do not stop where you are not clearly visible from above. Look uphill and give way to others when entering/exiting a trail or starting downhill.

8. Always ensure your equipment is in good condition and use suitable restraining devices to avoid runaway skiing/boarding equipment, even when riding chairlifts.

9. Do not ski, board, ride a lift or undertake any other alpine activity if your ability is impaired by drugs or alcohol.

10. If you are involved in, or witness an accident or collision, alert Ski Patrol, remain at the scene and identify yourself to the Ski Patrol.
