Youth Challenge (YC), a leading provider of adapt-ed sports and recreation in Northeast Ohio, received eight power wheelchairs to kick-off a Paralympic Power Soccer Program. Invacare Corp., the global leader in the manufacture and distribution of long-term care medical prod-ucts, donated the power wheelchairs.

A group of Invacare employees presented YC with the power wheelchairs at Youth Challenge head-quarters in Westlake. YC participants and volunteers then faced off in a series of 4-on-4 Power Soccer games, the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users.

After getting cash for their candy, kids had the opportunity to write a thank you note to troops, pick out a prize from a trea-sure box, and take home a Healthy Mouth goody bag.

A raffle was also made possible by local support from many of the vendors in The Bay Village Square Shopping Center, who do-nated gift cards for a fam-ily fun night or for their services, and the Cleveland Browns for donating the memorabilia.

Operation Gratitude is a non-profit organiza-tion that sends care pack-

ages to troops and their families. The Healthy Smile will then send the sweet taste of home to Van Nuys, California where care packages will be assem-bled and mailed overseas. Each package is stuffed with snacks, entertainment items, and personal letters of appreciation.

Operation Gratitude will be sending 60,000 holi-day care packages this sea-son, and in November they will reach the incredible milestone of delivering the one millionth package!

“What a great way to show our appreciation for

our military heroes,” said Dr. Kinneret Kozinn. One soldier who received a package last year wrote, “I can’t think of a single bet-ter thing to receive on a de-ployment than a box from someone you know cares.”

While introducing the Candy Buy Back idea at The Healthy Smile, a young patient enthusiastically told her mom that this year she wanted to take a pillowcase and go to all the houses in

the neighborhood so she can give the troops her candy.

As always, the goal at The Healthy Smile is to help you develop and maintain a healthy smile, so thank you for helping us make a hero smile also,” said Dr. Kozinn.

who previously had few opportunities for team athletics. We plan to introduce the sport to our participants through-out the winter and spring months, and kick off our formal team training in September 2014.”

“Invacare is pleased to be able to participate in this event with Youth Challenge and all of their amazing ath-letes and volunteers,” says Judson Cummins, Business Manager, Powered Mobility at Invacare Corporation. “In-vacare’s goal of ‘Making Life’s Experiences Possible’ is re-alized when organizations like Youth Challenge recognize how important camaraderie, competition, and teamwork are in all our lives, but especially in our youth with differ-ent abilities. We’re very excited to help Youth Challenge ex-pand their sports offering with Power Soccer and we look forward to many successes on the court in the future.”

Youth Challenge provides adapted sports and recre-ational opportunities to children with physical disabilities. Trained teen volunteers are paired one-on-one with par-ticipants to play, socialize and have fun. YC serves children throughout Northeast Ohio and has offices in Westlake and Shaker Heights. The nonprofit has been designated Para-lympic Sports Club—Cleveland, by the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee. As a Paralympic Sport Club, YC will continue to introduce adaptive sports to children with physical disabilities while also promoting athletics and teamwork.

When the program closed to the strains of Lee Greenwood’s ‘God Bless the USA,’ nearly everyone in the building had a lump in the throat and a tear in the eye.

“When I saw those children and their beautiful faces as they welcomed us, I remembered once again who we were fighting for,

and why we had to win,” said a World War II veteran after the program. “Because if we hadn’t won, some of those children would not be here today.”

It was the 25th Vet-eran’s Day program hosted by Holly Lane School un-der the direction of retiring teacher Marilyn Lester. She started this program many

years ago through the en-couragement of her be-loved parents, Hadyn and Doris Lester.

Mayor Dennis Clough presented Miss Lester with a city proclamation honor-ing her years of commit-ment to this truly moving event. “Of all the events I attend each year, this one is the best and the one I look

forward to the most,” said Mayor Clough.

The program began with the Pledge of Alle-giance, recognition of vet-erans from World War II right on up to today’s ser-vice men and women, plus patriotic songs and a video presentation by students. The grand finale featured confetti cannons as guests

sang along to “God Bless the USA.” It captured the spirit of this important hol-iday to perfection.

“As Miss Lester plans to retire this year, we would like to thank her for her many years of inspiration and dedication to the stu-dents, staff, veterans and the community for this wonderful educational pro-

gram,” said Principal Mimi Verdone.

“Miss Lester has plant-ed the seed of true patrio-tism in the hearts of many. Such a gift will continue to bloom for many years to come.”

Thank you, Holly Lane School, for this moving program. It was the best school assembly ever!

The Caring Continues:Making a Difference for Cancer Patients

As an ongoing program to assist adult patients at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center, Fairview Hospital Moll Pavilion, “The Caring Continues” impacts the lives of patients dramatically all year. Through the generosity of supporters, Oncology Social workers at the Cancer Center were able to help over 200 patients this year with rent, utilities, medication, car payments, and transportation to medical appointments. The fall fundraiser - Night at the Races - was hosted by Community West Foundation at Wagner’s of Westlake Saturday, Nov. 9.

“This is a very unique program and is truly appreciated by our on-cology patients, whose lives are made a little easier by your giving spirit,” said social worker Nicole Herbst to the upbeat crowd during the evening of wagering on video horse races af-ter a delicious pasta buffet. Nicole shared letters from on-cology patients that gave insight into patient gratitude for this outreach program. The Caring Contunes Fund helps those struggling to keep up with house payments, insurance, medical bills and even groceries. Unfortunately, when patients are diagnosed with cancer, there is no

reprieve from the expenses of normal life. “We are so very grate-ful for this support,” added Fairview Hospital President,Dr. Neil Smith, in attendance for the event. “This is a very unique program and is truly appreci-ated by our oncology patients, whose lives are made a little easier by your giving spirit,” added Dr. Peggy Kranyak, Ra-diation Oncologist Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center Fairview Hospital Moll Pavilion.

The tweets after Avon High’s 38-14 win over Toledo St. Francis de Sales Friday night said it all: “This win is for you coach Rob Porter.”

Porter, 38, passed away after collapsing at his home last Thursday. The impact of the tragedy left the commu-nity with heavy hearts as their team took the field for its first round game in the OHSAA Div. II playoffs.

But every player on that team responded by playing his heart out and securing a second round game against 9-2 Perrysburg at Huron Memorial Field this Friday.

“You played your hearts out and I am proud of each and every one of you,” said coach Mike Elder after the team prayer huddle following the game. “I know coach Porter was watching this from heaven.”

Porter, leaves his wife Tammy, and sons Bobby and Leo. Funeral services were held Monday at the Misencik Funeral Home in Avon.

In an expression of love for the late coach, a special team jersey bearing his name was presented in the locker room before the game. Coach Porter loved Avon football and was part of the program for 15 years. He coached 8th grade football and was the varsity’s statistics coach on Fri-day night.

In the win over St. Francis de Sales, Avon was paced by four touchdowns from sophomore running back Gerret Choat, who rushed for 160 yards. The Eagles, who wore “RP” decals on their helmets to honor Porter, continue to fly high as they improved to 11-0.

Avon Gridders Win One for Coach Porter

Avon lost a long-time coach, Rob Porter, last week. Rob, 38, was involved in Avon athletic programs for 15 years. He was an 8th grade football coach and assisted the varsity football staff in the press box.

His kind heart and love for Avon and the community’s athletes will be missed. Please

Sixty students from Cheryl Bendik’s Spanish 3 honors classes at Westlake High School participated in the spring 2013 OSU Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP).

The tests show a student’s projected placement into language courses at The Ohio State University. It compares A to-tal of 3,046 Level 3 students from 74 high schools throughout Ohio participated in the CAAP testing, along with OSU students in Level 1102 (third quarter) language classes.

The students were tested in four skill categories: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The vast majority of Westlake stu-dents placed in OSU’s level 3 classes and many placed in high level classes. The Westlake students were especially strong in the listening and reading categories.

“I am very proud of the hard work and determination our students diplay. The CAAP test is in line with the Ohio Depart-ment of Education’s standards and this is a good indication of how the students might do on the AP test,” Bendik said. “It also pro-vides practice at level 3 for the AP test that most will be taking in 2 years.”
