As the weather warms and planting time draws near, everyone begins to thinkabout the plants they will be putting into their gardens. While thinking of the plantsmay be the fun part of gardening, it’s the in which the plants will grow that is theimportant part of gardening.

The proper nutrients and acid/base balance are the basis for successful gardening. The best way to determine this is through soil testing.

Many garden shops and nurseries offer test kits that can be easily used by thehome gardener. The Cuyahoga County Cooperative Extension Service recommendsthe University of Massachusetts Soil and Plant Tissue Testing Lab (websitewww.umass.edu/plsoils/soiltest).

Whether you use this mail away service or an at-home test, the procedure is thesame. First, take samples as early as possible before planting. Do not collect soilwith brass, bronze or galvanized tools, to avoid contaminating the sample withcopper or zinc. Next, sample from one area only, for example your lawn or perennialbed. Dig samples at four-inch depths for lawns, at cultivated depth for vegetableand flower gardens and at four to six inches for shrubs. Do not sample areas thathave been recently fertilized or limed. Obtain several samples from the area, andthen mix them well in a plastic bucket. The test kit will instruct you how to label andmail your sample to the lab.

When testing is complete, a report is mailed back containing an explanation ofterms, the levels of nutrients and pH of the sample, along with crop specificinformation and methods to correct soil imbalances.

Consider taking a bit of time to do soil testing this spring. You will be rewarded witha healthier, more vigorous garden this summer. As the old saying goes, “Feed thesoil, not the plants.”
