Patrick Feeley

Brand Ambassador--Sales Professional--Porsche Fan

The first person you're likely to meetwalking into the Porsche of Ann Arborshowroom is Patrick Feeley, who hasbeen selling Porsches here for the pastfour years. Patrick has been sellingPorsches exclusively since 1999, first inFarmington Hills and then in Birming-ham. “It took me, prior to Porsche sales, two years with Mercedes and ten yearswith BMW, to get ready to sell Porsches.Even then it took me four to five yearsbefore I really became comfortable withproduct knowledge andPorsche's history. There's still a lot I don't know, but I'meager to find out.”

Patrick's passion for German cars in gen-eral, and Porsches in particular, beganwhen he had a roommate in college whoowned a BMW 2002tii. The car was in-volved in a nasty accidentwhile four peo-

ple were inside, and all four walked awayunscathed. “I can picture that incident to-day. That convincedme of the strength ofGerman cars, their safety.”When Patrickfinally joined the Porsche ranks, he re-members hearing an air-cooled 993 startfor the first time and describes the experi-ence as incredible.

A Detroit native, Patrick's first car was aMercury Montclair with a V8, but he'snow a longtime BMW, Mercedes, andAudi owner, today driving an '06A4witha 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and amanual transmission. However, his fa-vorite car these days is the base Cayman,“it's just an incredible car for the price, thelook it gives you. The Cayman is some-thing that everyone can reach.”

Patrick has driven Porsches on racetracksduring training events, and his dream tripwould be taking a trip to Germany withhis wife, and driving a Porsche there.

der RÜCKSPIEGEL

The Porsche 924S, 944 and 968 series isoften described as being a “good bang forthe buck.” They return reasonably goodgas mileage, handle exceptionally well, and offer - in the coupe version - the prac-ticality of a hatchback.

But now that the earliest cars havereached the ripe old age of 30 years, they’re edging into the vintage category. The maintenance intervals for the “criti-cal care” items, such as the timing belt, used to be based on mileage. Now, be-cause few of the cars are daily drivers, thecalendar is the basis for belt changes. Anew timing belt (AKA cam belt) wouldoften safely see more than 50K miles be-fore a replacement was necessary. Agewasn’t likely to be as much of a factorwhen the cars notched 15K miles a year. The belts would be adjusted every year or15K and replaced every three years. Nowthat many cars see fewer than 5K milesannually, the belt should be replaced atleast every 5 years, regardless ofmileage.

The consequence of neglecting the beltscan be catastrophic damage to the cylin-derheadandvalves. Inanormallyaspirat-ed 944 (non turbo) or 968, a broken beltWILL bend valves when they come incontact with the pistons. These enginesare also known as “Interference En-gines”… or “Boat Anchors” if the belt isallowed to break.

The failure can occur with no warningwhatsoever – you and your sweet ridecould be just idling at a traffic light andthenBANG! The repair caneasily exceed$3000.00.

With their slightly lower compression, the turbochargedcars havebeenknown to

get away without bending valves whenthebelt breaks, but ignoring thebeltmain-tenance is still not a risk worth taking.

In conjunction with the timing belt, thebalance belt should also be replaced at 5year intervals, and the belt rollers inspect-ed for noisy operation.

Here’s where the whole operation be-comes a bit more subjective. Under theheading of “While You’re InThere” (WYIT), does the water pumpneed tobechangedasoften as5years too?Obviously if a coolant leak is detected, orthe water pump pulley has any play or ro-tational noise, it should be changed. Thewaterpumpisdrivenby the timingbelt, soif the pump should seize, it could causethe timing belt to suffer a mass extractionof teeth. This won’t be covered by yourdental plan.

Another WYIT would be to address anyseeping or leaking seals at the front of theengine. These seals are located behind thebalance belt gears and camshaft gear, aswell as the crankshaft gear and pulleys.

Over the years, Porsche made improve-ments in the way the timing belt was ad-justed. The early cars – 1983 – 1986, didnot have any type of “automatic” adjus-tor.Thebelts areproperly tensionedusinga factory gauge. This fairly pricey gaugeis available through Porsche and othersuppliers, but isn’t particularly userfriendly. The 1987 – 1990 944 used an“automatic” adjustor that allows the beltto be tensioned without the gauge. By thetime the 968 came along in 1992, Porscheuseda trulyautomatichydraulic tensioner

adapted from the 928, thus eliminatingthe need to check the timing belt tensionevery 15K miles. Throughout the 944range, though, the balance belt tensionstill must be set with the gauge. It shouldalso be pointed out that the same mainte-nance rules apply to the 928.

So it’s the calendar not just the mileagethat determines the belt replacement in-terval for the 944 series. If youown, or areconsidering the purchase of a 944, know-ing the history of the maintenance per-formed is critical to the health of your en-gine. And your bank account.

In late July we broke the news that Mag-nusWalkerwould be offering his beloved1972 911 T known as "STR II" for saleduring the Gooding & Company auctionin Pebble Beach. When the Porsche wasfirst listed by Gooding it was shown asbeing sold with no reserve and had a pre-auction estimate of $125,000 to$150,000. Some thought sellingwithout areserve was crazy and perhaps it mighthave been if things had gone differently, but it wasn't and they didn't.

While Magnus has been doing what hedoes with Porsches for years now he firstburst into the limelight with the release ofhis documentary "Urban Outlaw". Fromthere, the trajectory of his Porschecelebrity went vertical. He (or his cars)have been on the cover of Road & Track

and Total 911, He's been seen in andaround all of the biggest Porsche shows,Jay Leno had him on "Jay Leno's Garage"not once, but twice, wemost recently sawhim on "The World's Fastest Car Show"with Justin Bell and there's an upcomingfeature on Magnus in this season's TopGear USA.

So, it's no wonder that when the biddingstarted last night around 9:15 pst that itquickly surpassed anyone's expectations(except maybe ours) and hammeredsold at $275,000 ($302,500 with buyerspremium). The bar has been set for thisnew/old breed of tuned Porsches and thecreations coming out of Magnus' shop. Itshould be interesting to see what happensfrom here.

The leaves are changingand it is getting cooler atnight. That must meanthat the driving seasonis nearing the end. Thatdoes not mean that weare short on events. Justcheck out the calendarand you will see thatSeptember is a busymonth. Some highlights are the OttawaHills Fall Festival and several DE’s.

Coming up in October is an MVR onlyevent at Porsche of Ann Arbor on the 5thand the party at the Schoen's on the 19th.Another enjoyable event will be the colortour in the Rally Sport Region on the 12th.We have attended several of these eventsand they are always enjoyable.

The tour and brunch at Mon Ami werevery successful this year. I think we hadthe largest turnout in the history of theevent. I know that the drivehad the largestturn out ever.Good job byLisa Soriano ingetting it all organized.

The end of the season now brings thechance to start thinking about next yearand the events that we should schedule. Ifyou have any thoughts please get them toone of the officers.

Flash your headlights at a fellow Porscheowner on the road!! Keep the kindredspirit alive!!
