COURSE AREAS

Racing for the 2013 Rolex Big Boat Series will take place on three general course areas: the North Course Area, The City Front Area, and the Circle Area.

The North Course Area lays north of Treasure and Alcatraz Islands and includes two starting areas: the Alcatraz start area which will be used for courses in Race Area D, and the Circle start area which will be used for courses in Race Area B and shared with Race Area A. The Alcatraz start area will facilitate both shorter courses that may be used in the event of light airs, and courses that will have a weather mark outside of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The City Front Course Area spans from just west of Treasure Island to the western edge of the City Front and lays south of Alcatraz Island. The start and finish area for Race Area C willl be northwest of Treasure Island.

The City Front Course Area also includes a dedicated course area for the J/70s that runs windward/leeward along the City Front approximately in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

A third course area to the east of the North Course Area in the general vicinity of the Berkeley Circle will be used as an alternate racing area for smaller draft boats

in multiple divisions and classes including the Melges 24s.

Handicap divisions and One Design classes will alternate daily between the City Front and North Course Areas. J/70s and Melges 24’s will race three races daily – the J/70s on their course, and Melges 24’s alternating amongst courses.

On Sunday, all divisions and classes with the exception of the J/70s and Melges 24s, will race the “Bay Tour” which will ring the North and City Front Course areas with all fleets finishing downwind in front of the St. Francis Yacht Club.

Hosts to last year’s IRC North American Championships, the 2013 edition of the Rolex Big Boat Series will host the IRC West Coast Championship, the HPR National Championship, and the Melges 24 Pre-Worlds.

Nestled at the foot of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, St. Francis Yacht Club has been home to the Rolex Big Boat Series for nearly a half century.

Each September, sailors from around the world come to test their mettle in San Francisco Bay’s strong breeze and challenging currents at the pinnacle of West Coast yacht racing -- the Rolex Big Boat Series.

The Rolex Big Boat Series, now in its 49th year, showcases top sailing talent and boats, all of whom are eager to win one of the six specially engraved Rolex timepieces given to the winners of the St. Francis Yacht Club's Perpetual Trophies.
