    THANKSGIVING

    1 Timothy 4:4

For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving.

The calendar says November. The harvest in the fields is winding down and much of the work is coming to a close. Fo

many, this month symbolizes the pinacle of the waning growing season. It is a time to take stock in the veritable success

or disapointments gleaned from the crops that have been produced from the land.

Jesus shares with us the parable of the sower: A sower went out to plant seed on the land. As he sowed the seed, some

spilled on the path as he walked, and the birds followed along after him eating it. Other seed fell on unprepared land with

rocks in it. These seeds did not have much soil. So, they sprang up quickly since there was no place for them to take root.

As the sun rose to mid-day, the seedlings were scorched by the heat of the day and withered away. Still other seed fell on

areas where competing vegetation had not been removed. As the weeds grew quickly they overtook the preferred plant

choking it from fully developing. The sower succeeded in sowing seed in the intended, well prepared soil. From this good

land, it brought forth bushels of grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Jesus concludes this story with an imperitive, Let anyone with ears listen! What is it that is too be listened too? Why

make a statement directing those who are listening to listen? On the surface, the story reads much like Farming 101

mixed in with a bit of common sense. Seed planted in properly prepared soil will produce much more at the time of

harvest than seed that is planted in land marginally maintained.

Gregory and I saw a bit of this in our first attempt at planting a garden in Louisiana this year. Our own harvest reflected

some mixed blessings. The majority of the seeds planted by us did produce a few things we expected. We too had someseedlings lost to the scorching heat. We also discovered how quickly weeds sprang up. The birds seemed to help

repopulate the garden bed with unwanted things from the birdfeeder, despite our best attempts to remove them.

The disciples themselves questioned the value of the story and the reasoning behind it. Could it be that everyone had not

obtained the life experience of the farmer? The context of that experience seems to be plainly spoken of in the descriptive

story of the sower who plants seed and expects a harvest; the results of which is directly tied to the placement of the

seed and the ability to provide the proper soil conditions to allow it to mature into a plant that produces the desired harvest

It is really more than a simple story. Jesus intention was to provide a real life application by which we could be thankfu

for the gift of grace that we receive through faithfully living our life. Jesus sowed the seed within our hearts and from our

response to faith reflect the fruits of the harvest. For those whose response in faith is like that of the seed spilled along the

path, it reflects a here today and gone tomorrow understanding of faith in God. For those whose faith lands them in the

unprepared soil, it is much like one who accepts Christ, but then does nothing else to nurture their own faith. As the first

difficulty comes along to challenge them, their faith evaporates. For those whose faith is developing along the weeds of

this world, they quickly find that they compromise their faith for other things. For those who are rooted in Gods Word and

actively in fellowship with one another in Christ, they quickly find that their faith grows and matures. It is from this that all

good things are created by our God. Nothing is rejected, provided it is received with thanksgiving.

As we gather in thanksgiving this year, let us remember to listen to Christ as we are called to sow Gods love and mercy in

all that we do as a reflection of the work that He has done in each of us. See you at church! - Pastor John
