NJCAA 75th ANNIVERSARYIn May 1938, representatives from area institutions of higher learning

gathered in Fresno, Calif., to form a unique collegiate athletic organization dedicated to America’s community and junior colleges. The meeting led to the adoption of a constitution and representatives in attendance formally announced the new organization as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Seventy-five years after its inaugural season (1938-39), the NJCAA is now the second-largest national intercollegiate athletics governing body in the United States with over 500 member colleges in 43 states. Recognized as the leader in two-year collegiate athletics, the NJCAA champions both athletic and academic opportunities for student-athletes in concert with member colleges. To commemorate its

75th Anniversary, the NJCAA has launched a year-long campaign to celebrate the

milestones, student-athletes, coaches and administrators that have helped shape the organization and advance two-year collegiate athletics over the past eight decades.

Throughout the 2012-13 academic year, the NJCAA will celebrate its 75th Anniversary through various outlets, including a special section of the NJCAA

website (njcaa.org/75). Traditional press releases will be distributed to member colleges as well as regional and national media during the 2012-13 sports season and special 75th Anniversary content will be produced for the organization’s monthly publication – NJCAA Review. NJCAA TV – powered by iHigh.com, as well as Facebook and Twitter will be used to help keep member colleges, fans and followers informed on the latest 75th Anniversary news and announcements.

BRYCE HARPER 2012 NL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR

It didn’t take Bryce Harper long to become a household name in Major League Baseball. The former College of Southern Nevada star became the second consecutive former

NJCAA student-athlete to be named National League Rookie of the Year after Atlanta Braves pitcher Craig Kimbrel (Wallace State CC-

Hanceville, Ala.) claimed the honor in 2011. Less than a month after celebrating his 20th birthday, the Washington Nationals outfielder became the youngest position player in history to earn rookie of the year. Harper was the second-youngest player ever to claim the award, following former New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden who took the honor in 1984 at the age of 19. Batting for a .270 average, Harper compiled 22 home runs, 26 doubles and a team-high nine triples in

his first year in the big leagues. The former Coyote also brought home 59 runs – 34 after the All-Star break – and scored 98 runs of his own. In his only season at Southern Nevada, Harper

boasted a .443 batting average and led the nation with 101 hits. Harper also scored the most runs in the

country with 98 and ranked second in the land in RBis with 98. The young slugger also displayed his knack for extra-base hits, leading the nation with 31 home runs and ranking third with 23 doubles.

POLL DATES: February 27 - March 13, 27 - April 10, 24 - May 8, 15, 22

Eight rankings will be released for the 2013 Division III Baseball season. The first five polls of the season will be conducted on a bi-weekly basis and the final three will be conducted on a weekly basis.

Each NJCAA region director will report the top teams in their respective region to the national office each

Monday. The teams are compiled into a region report which is then distributed to the voting panel consisting of the eight district directors. Each district director then submits their Top 10 teams based on the region rankings.

The national office will then release the final rankings to the public on each poll date.
