DII MEN’S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE The NJCAA Division II Men’s

Basketball Committee is responsible for setting

policies and procedures for the approval by the

NJCAA Board of Directors. This committee is made up

of NJCAA Region Directors, Assistant Region Directors

and the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association

President.

11-12 DII MBB Committee & Poll Information

The NJCAA will release 14 rankings for Division I

Men’s Basketball throughout the season. The poll

release dates are: Nov. 15, 22, 29, Dec. 6, 13, Jan.

10, 18*, 24, 31, Feb. 7, 14, 21, 28 and March 6.

*poll pushed back one day due to MLK Day

The rankings will be released on the NJCAA

website (www.njcaa.org) and distributed to the

media at approximately 1 p.m. on each poll date.

All Region Directors with Division II programs in

their region submit the top teams in their region

for national poll consideration to the NJCAA each

Monday. The NJCAA then formulates a report

based on that information and distributes it DII

voters. Voters then submit their votes to the

NJCAA.

Lincoln College (Ill.) defended its national championship in the Division II ranks of NJCAA men's basketball with a 74-67 victory over Mott (Mich.). Lincoln (28-7) jumped out to a 10 point lead in the first half due to their defensive efforts. The Lynx pushed their lead to as much as 15 in the second half before Mott made a comeback to cut the lead to just four points with a little over a minute to go in the contest. After a Lincoln free throw, Mott got back within five points with 35 seconds to play but the Lynx hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Turpin was named Tournament MVP for the second year in a row with 19 points and seven rebounds in the title game.

Lincoln’s Whiteman and Turpin Tabbed 2011-12 Coach & Player of the Year

The NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association Kirk Whiteman and Kiel Turpin named Division II Coach and Player of the Year.

Division II Coach of the Year Kirk Whiteman guided the Lincoln College (Ill.) men’s basketball team to its second-straight NJCAA Division II Championship in just his third year as head coach. In his first year, Whiteman came up just short with a third place finish in the 2009 national tournament. In 2010 his team captured the school’s first-ever national title in men’s basketball and the 2011 squad made it back-to-back championships with their 74-67 win over Mott Com-munity College (Mich.) in the title game. Lincoln is just the third team since the creation of Division II in 1986 to repeat as champions. In 2011, the Lynx spent the first two weeks of the season at No. 1 in the DII rankings and eventually won the Region 24A/District 13 Championship.

Whiteman served as the assistant coach at Lincoln for seven years under BJ McCullum before taking the reins in 2008. In Whiteman’s three years as head coach the Lynx are 85-23. Division II Player of the Year Kiel Turpin (6’4” – 230 lb. - F) helped lead Lincoln to back-to-back NJCAA Division II Championships and was named a First-Team NJCAA DII All-American. Turpin scored 19 points, pulled down seven rebounds and blocked three shots to lead the Lynx over Mott Community College (Mich.) in this year’s title game. His efforts won him the Tournament MVP award for the second straight season. He is just the second player ever to win the MVP honors twice at the DII national tournament, joining Jeff Massey of Owens Technical College (1992, 1993). Turpin averaged 15.5 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. He also ranked fourth nationally in blocked shots (3.4). He will play the next two seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference with Florida State University.
