S ometimes all the elements come together to make for a nearly ideal outcome. Such may have been the case when the Hemmings Motor News Concours d’Elegance took place over the last weekend in September this fall. For the second year, Hemmings teamed with the Saratoga Auto Museum in Saratoga Springs, New York, to put on the event, which was presented on the picturesque lawns of the Saratoga Spa State Park, adjacent to the museum. The setting for the main event, Sunday’s concours, is a sunken lawn surrounding a reflect- ing pool in the midst of the park’s his- toric spa buildings, an appropriate stage to display some of motoring’s finest moments. This particular weekend was flush with clear, sunny skies, warm climes and a splash of early fall color to high- light the still lush lawns. For Sunday’s concours, all participating vehicles are individually selected and invited by our BY TERRY McGEAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEMMINGS STAFF staff in the months leading up to the date, and this time out we were rewarded with an unusually high response rate that yielded a full field of nearly 160 cars. In addition to our regular groupings of vehicles, there were featured classes highlighting Jaguar E-type, Chrysler Street Hemi cars, 1966-1971, BMW cars and motorcycles, pre-1977, Corvettes of 1953-1973, Early Ford V-8s, 1932-1942, American Fiberglass Specials of the Fif- ties, and a special grouping of cars from the Class of 1958. After enjoying a road tour on Friday, an open cruise-in car show on Saturday and Saturday evening’s dinner, featur- ing keynote speaker Sam Posey, who was also presented with the Lee Iacocca Award, Sunday’s Concours d’Elegance was the icing on the cake.
