WHY FEDERATIONBY MICHAEL STEINBERG

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The words Jewish Federation evoke a myr-iad of feelings. To me our mission and goal

can be articulated in two Hebrew words; Pikuach Nefesh, the preservation and enhancement of the quality of life.

It takes a com-munity to create

the roots to establish a strong communal foundation. Warmth, caring and compassion emulate the core of our being. These three attributes best define the Jewish Commu-nity of Northwest Indiana and they are also central to our Jewish soul.

Our success is your success and in order for us to truly excel in all areas of services and programs that we provide–WE NEED YOU!

Together we can make a difference and overcome any challenge and obstacle put before us.

I am an idealist. History has shown us, throughout the millennia, in spite of our dif-ferences, our strength has been our unity. Therefore, we know our unity is inextricably connected to our future.

Your belief in our mission is life sustain-ing. We still have much to accomplish in the coming year.

At the same time, we have much to be proud of as you will see while read-ing through the pages of our 2013 annual report. You cannot help but be moved by the indelible mark the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana makes in our community. Thank you.

MISSION STATEMENT:Enriching Jewish Life in Northwest Indiana, Israel and around the world through service, programming, advocacy, and fundraising.

MAYA ISACOWITZ IN CONCERTRising young Israeli rocker Maya Isacowitz took the stage in the Jewish Community Building this summer and charmed the audience with her sweet voice, gentle lyrics and powerful chords. Honored in Israel as the Best New Artist of 2012, Maya is busy recording her second album in the U.S. and claiming a new fan base in the Midwest. Her appearance in the community was a little bit of serendipity, a little bit of moxie and a little bit of mazel. Executive Director Michael Steinberg wrote her a fan letter and invited her to visit the community if she ever came to the U.S. She agreed to do so and made good on the promise when she came to New York to work on her album.

REACHING OUT BY STEPPING OUT : GOOD DEEDS DAYWhen Michael Steinberg and Rabbi Len Zukrow invited Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson to develop a joint project through the worldwide "Good Deeds Day" initiative, she warmly received the idea. The result: Teens from the Jewish community, Immanuel Baptist Church in Gary–and from Lake, Porter and as far away as LaPorte–met to deliver groceries and spend some time socializing with the elderly residents of Genesis Towers. Nearly 35 Genesis residents had lost their possessions and were displaced due to pipes that burst in the building.

JEWISH COMMUNITY SERVICES

By Carol SzaksDirector

Jewish Community ServicesJEWISH COMMUNITY SERVICES has had a busy year and we hope as you read this report you can say you were part of the planning and that you participated. JCY DAY CAMP This was the 10th year for JCY Day Camp . We have grown beyond our dreams. 125 children and 20 staff members had a wonderful summer here on the grounds of the Federation. This year was full of sports, crafts, and daily swim. SOUP AND CINEMA Jewish Film series has grown in attendance. We have seen interesting award-winning movies with great discussion along with our hot soup and munchies. MAH JONGG We continue to learn Mah Jongg and have large groups participating twice a week. ADULT FRIENDSHIP CLUB Our senior hot lunch program has also seen quite an increase in attendance. Delicious hot lunches, companion- ship and entertainment are offered twice a week. We also deliver meals for those who are homebound. VETERANS PROGRAM We honored our Veterans with a special program this year. We had more than 80 vet-erans in attendance. HOLIDAY GIFT DRIVE Our holiday gift drive for the many families who would not have presents for the holi-days was very successful. Many gifts were distributed from our community to families. Requests from our case-work families were fulfilled including winter clothing, toys, groceries and gift cards.

MANNA CABANA continues to feed the hungry in Northwest Indi-ana:: This year Jewish Community Services has partnered with Greater Hammond Community Services. We continue to collect groceries from our community and distribute our food throughout our area thru Greater Hammond. Many thanks to our local congregations for their donations. MENS' SHELTER We are still com-mitted to the men’s shelter in Ham-mond. Once a month, a hot, well-bal-anced meal is prepared for 50 people at the shelter. Not only do we feed men but women and children. CASEWORK is the busiest area of Jewish Community Services. It takes hours to solve the many issues that are presented. Assistance in rent, utilities, funerals, gas, nursing home placement, doctor’s visits, medication and day-to-day living expenses has also increased. VISITS TO THE ILL Nursing home and hospital visits continue. A visit to our friends residing in a variety of nursing homes is a vital, busy area of JCS. Home healthcare needs have increased in our community this year. Referrals and visitation has kept us busy.

SCHOLARSHIPS We continue to offer scholarships to those in need for college as well as overnight camp and day camp. SENIOR RETREAT is now in its24th year. We continue to offer education, intellectual discussions, prayer and social programming for four days in the Wisconsin Dells. This is an “aha moment” for the many seniors who attend.

TUTORING Many thanks to our tutors who travel weekly to the Ham-mond Academy of Science and Tech-nology to tutor those children who need a little help. Their dedication to this project is deeply appreciated. ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out). ROMEO meets every other week for socializing, a great lunch and good times for the group. As you know Jewish Community Services has many programs in place to meet the needs of our region. It takes an army of people many hours to make it all happen. I would liketo thank all the JCS volunteers and especially the JCS Award Winners. Thank you for your time and your dedication to Jewish Community Ser-vices. It can’t happen without you. To all the JCS employees, Pat Jacob-son, Ken Shepard and Toni Williams, along with the kitchen volunteers, and Roseanne Sopher and the K’Ton Ton staff, thank you. To Michael and our administrative staff, thanks for all you do. It couldn’t happen without you. Many thanks to Adriana Front for her hard work and dedication to JCS. Her time has made a difference. I especially want to thank Barry Levin, Federation President, for all his guidance. Thanks for all you do. It takes an army…join us.

NORTHWEST INDIANA IN ISRAELThroughout the year community members take advantage of trips to Israel through the Jewish Fed-eration and local congregations. It is always a treat for our travelers to visit past Shlichim. Earlier this year, a dozen plus people from Northwest Indiana attended the wedding of former Shaliach Oded Fromovitz and Adi Yaffe. Above, in June, a delegation from Gary's Wirt-Emerson Visual and Performing Arts Academy traveled to our Partnership Region in the Western Galilee to visit Kibbutz Ga’aton Contem-

porary Dance Group and other sites. In November, a group traveled to Amsterdam and then went on to tour Israel. NORTHWEST INDIANA AND ISRAELTwo small communities, each located near an important body of water. Northwest Indiana on Lake Michi-gan and The Western Galilee on the Mediterranean Sea. Though we are on opposite sides of the globe, we have much in common and much to share. Through Jewish Agency For Israel and Partnership2Gether, we have been working together for nearly 20 years. In that time, we have shared artistic opportunities, discussed politics, economics, culture, medical innovation and even shared our Halloween Costumes!

P2Gether–Partnership2Gether–provides peer-to-peer opportunities in the U.S. and in Israel.

K'Ton Ton Preschool ProgramsK'TON TON Preschool opened in 1955 and has been the only Jew-ish preschool in our regional area. Our mission is to help children develop as individuals and mem-bers of the community through a stimulating educational program into which Jewish content is inte-grated.

The various programs are based upon the philosophy that play is the work of children. We believe that children learn best in an atmosphere of warmth, love, and openness. K'Ton Ton is proud to be among a few select preschools in our area accredited by NAEYC

(The National Association for the Education of Young Children). Our preschool offers a four morning-a-week program for three, four, and five year olds. A five-morning-a-week program is provided for pre-kindergarten children where they participate in a variety of hands-on activities with individualized in-

struction. We currently have three classes with a total of 43 children.

In addition to the preschool, K'Ton Ton offers Toddler classes and a summer "Kamp" program. After school activities include Afternoon Enrichment, Tumble Bear Gym-nastics, Dance Instruction, Pee Wee Sports & Fitness, and Kidz Kare.

We are very enthusiastic about our plans for many new and exciting programs for our children as well as parents. We extend our most sincere appreciation to the Jewish Federation and to our K'Ton Ton families for their continued support and cooperation.
