ReunionExperiences

It was my class reunion, andall through the house,

I checked in each mirror andbegged my poor spouse

To say I looked great, that mychin wasn't double,

And he lied through falseteeth, just to stay out of

trouble.Said that 'neath my thickglasses, my eyes hadn't

changed,And I had the same figure, itwas just a mite rearranged.

He said my skin was stillsilky, although looser in

drape,Not so much like smooth

satin, but more like silk crepe.I swallowed his words hook,

sinker and lineAnd entered the banquet

feeling just fine.Somehow I'd expected my

classmates to stayAs young as they were on that

long-ago dayWe'd hugged our goodbyes.

But like me, through theyears,

They'd added gray to theirhair, or pounds to their rears.

But as we shared a fewmemories and retold some

class jokes,We were eighteen in spirit,though we looked like our

folks.We turned up hearing aid

volumes and dimmed downthe light,

Rolled back the years, andwere young for the night.

Every day after lunch we wouldcongregate outside the cafeteria untilit was time for the next class. Thestudent parking lot was across thedriveway & sometimes we would walkover & look at the cars. One upper-classman drove his tiny Italian car toschool. It was a funny-looking car & Iremember it had only one door &opened from the front of the car. Oneof the guys wanted to try to pick it up.About 6 of us (three in the front, threein the back) were able to pick itentirely off the ground. Then wedecided to carry it around the front ofthe gym, up the sidewalk & steps &left it against the gym doors. Mochnickwent out of his way to find out who didthe car-napping. But nobody talked &we laughed about it for weeks.

One of my favorite memories was theNoon Dances in the gym. Everyonetried to show off their best dancemoves! I can still see Evie Blum (classof ‘62) & Jerry McMillan doing anuninhibited “Stroll” to “Duke ofEarl.” No partner? No problem - JudyRutan & I danced with each other.Sometimes we still do that!

- Bonny AlonzoEveryone knows my father was amath teacher at PJHS. My problemwas that he was also the StudentCouncil Faculty Advisor & theCouncil sponsored most of the schooldances. And he was always there tochaperone, not ideal for a teenager,but one of the most vivid experiencesin my memory. - Ron Rometo

I was in Mr. Schrall’s room down in the basement in 9th grade, andSylvia Gotich was right above us in Mr. Hague’s room. The pencilsharpener in Hague’s room was next to the window. Sylvia would go tosharpen her pencil, and throw a note tied to a string out the window andon down to us. Sometimes we’d send a note back up the same way.

– Paula WeightmanOur tight foursome of Craig Woods, Rodger White, Steve Todoric & Ilooked forward to each morning to catch up & cavort, and often drewscolding threats from our 9th grade home room teacher, Mr. Schrall. Heliked to bang his ruler on a desk to show he was serious aboutmaintaining order. One day he smacked the ruler so hard it broke intwo. Without that stick, he was a different person. Dejected. He didn’tseem to know how to act. I felt bad for him. So in shop class, I madehim a wooden paddle to replace the ruler and restore his dignity. Thiswas not just any old paddle. It was large, close to 36“long, with a broadblade – a two-hander that he could really put his back into. I drillednickel-size holes across the blade to reduce air resistance when heswung it. As a finishing touch, I covered the handle with rabbit’s fur! Aprize paddle-- a paddle to instill fear in the most fearless of us boys (i.e.,Rodger). I was proud of it and couldn’t wait to see the look on Mr.Schrall’s face when I gave it to him. Well, he was so grateful that he hadme bend over his desk and whacked me with it. I was victim to my ownpaddle! Our home room gang had a good laugh over it. Me? Not somuch! - Richard Stewart

Mrs. Molinaro NEVER smiled,so one day she was late, & I puta note on her desk: “Latin is adead language it’s plain to see.It killed all the Romans and nowit’s killing me.” We saw hercrack a smile for the first time!

Mine was Senior Day when we alljumped in our cars in the morning &tore out of school. Ruth McKainnearly ran over Mr. Mochnick—hewas out in the driveway trying to stopus from leaving! -John Beech

It was Halloween & a few of us, under the influence of burgers &milkshakes, decided to “paper” the tall pine trees in front of the highschool. Using toilet paper, we did a fine job on the lower branches butwere stymied about reaching the higher branches. A tall classmatehoisted me onto his shoulders, nearly doubling our height & he circledthe tree while I decorated as high as I could reach. We heard later thatMochnick thought a ladder must have been involved. - Bobbie Messalle

We had a close knit group of Rich Stewart, Rodger White, Steve Todoricthe Blash twins & I. We did like to "catch up & cavort" each morning butby our senior year we also liked to skip school. I skipped 33 days mysenior year. We often went to my house since there was no adult athome. The fun & frivolity ended when a truant officer showed up one dayand warned we might not be allowed to graduate. Then our class wasthreatened with non-graduation when we all left school in ouroutlandishly decorated cars on Senior Day, a tradition we weredetermined to carry out despite Mr. Mochnick’s warnings. All wasforgiven I guess because we were allowed to graduate & received ourdiplomas. - Craig Woods
