From the Editors Welcome to the first week of 2012! Whether you’re scrambling to find last minute cheap textbooks or have just returned from a 3-month holiday to South East Asia where you lived like a king, you can look forward to this year because we’ve packed an array of social events that you‘ll be talking about for the next 5 years, or until you graduate and start working full time (oh dear-5 full days a week…although on the bright side you get to suit up!) Also a big welcome to those new to the UNSW Law School! Things you should look out for include Law camp tickets (sold out after 4 hours of sale!) Lawkipedia (a first year’s cheat sheet to UNSW Law school) and of course, your weekly edition of The Brief. We hope that all members (new and old) get involved in 2012! UNSW SPEAKERS FORUM PRESENTS LILLIAN DANG AND AMRITA KAPUR
To coincide with this event, we will be launching the Government and Public Careers Guide just in time for applications for graduate positions for students interested in careers with a social justice focus. Details: Date: Thursday 1 March (Week 1) Venue: Law G23 Time: 1-2pm
Bio of the speakers: Lillian Dang is the Law Program Officer for the Access to Justice Program at The Asia Foundation in Timor-Leste. Since June 2010, she has worked closely with the Foundation’s local legal aid partner organisations, the Ministry of Justice, the United Nations, and civil society organisations to promote a sustainable legal aid sector within Timor-Leste’s nascent justice system. She was previously a Research Officer at Pact Cambodia in Phnom Penh, a Special Projects Coordinator at the Diplomacy Training Program, and a Tax and Legal Consultant at KMPG. She was also a Legal Research Intern at the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre, in New Delhi, India. She graduated from UNSW with a BCom/LLB in 2008 and was admitted as a lawyer in 2009. Amrita Kapur is International Legal Adviser to the Women’s Justice Unit, Justice System Monitoring Programme in Dili, Timor-Leste. She was previously: a consultant for the International Development Law Organisation, working on gender equality in customary land law in Mozambique and Tanzania; Human Rights Fellow at the Centre for Transitional Justice in New York; and intern at Human Rights Watch in NYC and at the Prosecutor’s Office at the International Criminal Court. She has also worked at the NSW DPP and the Legal Aid Commission. At UNSW, she teaches international humanitarian law and criminal law.

2011-2012 TRANDAFIR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS WRITING COMPETITION
Topic: Any topic of contemporary international
business or economic concern with a legal nexus.
Award: Publication and CASH PRIZE of $2,000
The winning essay will be published in
Transnational Law & Contemporary Problems, a
journal of the University Of Iowa College Of Law.
Eligibility: All students currently enrolled in a law
