Welcome to the 2012 catalog for MIT Press Journals.

Our journals program reflects our close partnerships with others in the academic community, including libraries, universities, scholarly societies, faculty, and students. The collaborative efforts of this community combine to sustain high-quality and reasonably-priced journal publication by university presses. We maintain the lowest possible annual price increases; we also invest strategically in the future development of our program. In this catalog, we are pleased to announce both a major new research platform and the launch of a new start-up journal.

Our big news is MIT CogNet. As a publisher in today’s digital environment, we reach beyond content to the nurturing of a rich research experience for scholars. The new platform for CogNet offers such an environment, adding robust new tools and features to an expanding collection of books, journals, and reference works. We are grateful to the many librarians and scholars who have advised us during the multi-year process of bringing this valuable resource for the brain and cognitive sciences to the next level. We believe that high-quality research platforms will play an important role in the Press’s future, so we will welcome your feedback on MIT CogNet with particular interest.

Who would start a new journal in today’s challenging economy? We would, when we find such a compelling opportunity as that for ARTMargins. The ARTMargins journal, an outgrowth of the very successful ARTMargins Online, will focus on the visual culture of Central and Eastern Europe and other marginalized regions. It will connect the disparate art communities in these areas and provide a much-needed authoritative venue for the publication of work by artists and academics. ARTMargins joins our strong list of art theory journals, alongside October, Grey Room, TDR/The Drama Review, and PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art.

The MIT Press journals program offers lots of multimedia and web-based supplemental material such as our free author podcasts. As always, our library-friendly subscription policies offer libraries significant benefits. These include access to the full archive online, in some cases going back to volume 1, issue 1; and retention of online access to subscribed issues after cancellation.

Our subscription prices are substantially lower than those of commercial publishers for comparable material and our author agreements are less restrictive. The MIT Press is proud to play a key role in the broad dissemination of high-quality journals.

African Arts presents original research and critical discourse on traditional, contemporary, and popular African arts and expressive cultures. Since 1967, the journal has reflected the dynamism and diversity of several fields of humanistic study, publishing richly illustrated articles in full color, incorporating the most current theory, practice, and intercultural dialogue. The journal offers readers peer-reviewed scholarly articles concerning a striking range of art forms and visual cultures of the world’s second-largest continent and its diasporas, as well as special thematic issues, book and exhibition reviews, features on museum collections, exhibition previews, artist portfolios, photo essays, edgy dialogues, and editorials. African Arts promotes investigation of the interdisciplinary connections among the arts, anthropology, history, language, politics, religion, performance, and cultural and global studies.

About the EditorsMarla C. Berns is Shirley & Ralph Shapiro Director of the Fowler Museum at UCLA. She has published

extensively on the arts of Northeastern Nigeria and is currently collaborating with the Musée du quai Branly on an exhibition on the arts of the Benue River Valley.

Steven Nelson is Associate Professor in the UCLA Department of Art History. His teaching and research interests concern the contemporary and historic arts, architecture and urbanism of Africa and its diasporas, African American art history, and queer studies.

Allen F. Roberts is Professor of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA. He studies and writes about African visual cultures and performance arts including Sufi arts of urban Senegal, arts of divination and healing in the Congo, and the efficacy of images in the Indian Ocean World.

Mary Nooter Roberts is Professor of World Arts and Cultures at UCLA and a curator of African art exhibitions. Her research and writing explore the philosophical underpinnings of African arts; the body and female representation in central Africa; arts of memory, writing, and inscription; and exhibitions as objects of knowledge.

Gemma Rodrigues is Curator of African arts at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, where her current research and curatorial interests include the reconstruction of pre-colonial art histories; theories of place, urbanism, and site-specificity; relational aesthetics, and the aesthetic and visual dimensions of cross-cultural encounter and translation.

Doran H. Ross is the former Director of the Fowler Museum at UCLA. His expertise in African art is wide-ranging, with special interest in the arts of Ghana, African textiles, and contemporary African art.

The newest journal from the MIT Press, ARTMargins publishes articles, essays, reviews, and interviews that critically reflect on Eastern European contemporary art and curatorship in an expanded context comprising Eurasia, North Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Central Asia. ARTMargins invites artists, art theorists, art historians, and curators to reflect on what the editor has called the “global margin”. ARTMargins strives to locate the commonalities between post-Socialist Eastern Europe and other regions, and revise the definition of what it means to speak to, or from, the margins. Content is organized into articles and critical essays, artist presentations, and reviews.

About the EditorSven Spieker teaches in the Department of Germanic, Slavic and Semitic Studies at the

University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an affiliate faculty member in the departments of Art and Art History where he teaches courses in 20th century and contemporary art. He is also the co-editor of ARTMargins Online.

For over 80 years, The New England Quarterly (NEQ) has published the best that has been written on New England’s cultural, literary, political, and social history. Contributions cover a range of time periods, from before European colonization to the present, and any subject germane to New England’s history—for example, the region’s literary and artistic productions, its political practice and philosophies, race relations, labor struggles, religious controversies, and the organization of family life. The journal also treats the migration of New England ideas, people, and institutions to other parts of the United States and the world. In addition to major essays, features include memoranda and edited documents, reconsiderations of traditional texts and interpretations, essay reviews, and book reviews.

PAJ is admired internationally for its independent critical thought and cutting-edge explorations. PAJ charts new directions in performance, video, drama, dance, installations, media, film, and music, bringing together ideas of theatre and the visual arts. About the EditorBonnie Marranca is the author of Performance Histories, Ecologies of Theatre and

Theatrewritings, which received the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, and the editor of several anthologies, including New Europe: plays from the continent, Plays for the End of the Century, Conversations on Art and Performance and The Theatre of Images. Asian Economic Papers is sponsored by the Earth Institute at Columbia University, the 21st Century Center for Excellence at Keio University, and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy. AEP’s articles focus on high-quality, objective analysis of key economic issues of a particular Asian economy or of the broader Asian region, and offer creative solutions to these Asian economic issues. AEP selects articles from open submissions and solicits articles from the top experts in the fields that are of high contemporary interest. Authors present their analyses at the Asian Economic Panel, which convenes twice a year in different parts of the world. The panel, which held its first meeting in April of 2001, consists of over fifty leading economists from all over the world specially invited to discuss the subjects of that particular meeting. AEP makes its publication decisions after reviewing the revised papers.

Global Environmental Politics examines the relationship between global political forces and environmental change, with particular attention given to the implications of local-global interactions for environmental management as well as the implications of environmental change for world politics. Each issue is divided into full-length research articles and shorter forum articles focusing on issues such as the role of states, multilateral institutions and agreements, trade, international finance, corporations, science and technology, and grassroots movements. Contributions to the journal come from across the disciplines including political science, international relations, sociology, history, human geography, public policy, science and technology studies, environmental ethics, law, economics, and environmental science. In early 2012, Kate O'Neill (College of Natural Resources, University of California, Berkeley) and Stacy D. VanDeever (Department of Political Science, University of New Hampshire) will assume editorial duties for GEP. Their first issue will be released in February 2013.

Since its premiere in the fall of 1993, Artificial Life has become the unifying forum for the exchange of scientific information on the study of man-made systems that exhibit the behavioral characteristics of natural living systems. These systems can be synthesized in software, hardware, or wetware. Each issue features international research that spans the hierarchy of biological organization, including studies of the origin of life, self-assembly, growth and development, evolutionary and ecological dynamics, animal and robot behavior, social organization, and cultural evolution.
