To answer that you might start by iden- tifying what your ex- pectations are for the situation presented. We, like all parents, naturally had cer- tain fundamental expectations for our daughter, now nearly 11 years old, when we discovered that she was on the way. We expected that she would walk, talk, grow, go to school, join the soccer team, be a cheerleader, and so on. When Adrianna was born with Down Syn- drome our expecta- tions for her future changed. Those expectations changed further as time went on and the combination of her specific diagnoses appeared to leave very little room for things like intelligible speech, public class- rooms, sports teams, social activities, or even a trip to the shopping mall. In addition to Down Syndrome, she received the diagnosis of apraxia of speech and thyroid disorder. Anna has low muscle tone which affects her ability to walk, talk, hold a pencil, and many other daily activities. She exhibits obsessive compulsive tendencies and behavior issues- mild but enough to send school personnel and others running! We sought medical care and treatment in mul- tiple areas, multiple states, and multiple disciplines trying to find a way to make this child’s life functional, if not “normal”. Many well meaning professionals advised “acceptance” of her apparent limitations and adjustments of our expectations for her of a more isolated, seditary lifestyle. School personnel advised that her lack of intelligible speech, cognitive delays, and behavior issues made her better suited for homeschooling and provided private tutors. NEEDLESS TO SAY, “ACCEPTANCE” IS NOT IN OUR VOCABULARY. Our quest to find answers led us to the University of Iowa - first to the Specialty Clinic and then to the Center for Dis- abilities and Development. Over the last 2.5 years, Adrianna has amassed an outstanding team of doctors, therapists, and others who haveidentified and worked diligently to identify and address her needs. A few of these special groups include the Otolaryngology team who patiently work with her hearing loss to ensure that she can now hear clearly; Physical Therapy who helped us to obtain orthotics for her feet and ankles allowing her the gift of movement without pain; Endocrine who monitors her levels so she has the energy she needs to be a kid; and most recently the Be- havior Clinic. This special group of doctors afforded us 2 weeks of inpatient evaluation and education to help us, in part, understand the functionality of Adrianna’s behaviors and to identify acceptable alternatives. We have been home 1 month, have implemented the strategies and have noted changes which cause us to pause and give thanks every day. Adrianna, it turns out, is on the autism spectrum. Knowing this allows us to appropriately address the behavior and social difficulties that she has spent her life battling. Like all the other exceptional people at the CDC, we are confident that Dr. O’Brien’s team will continue to work with us to ensure that we have the tools to do that. We cannot adequately express our appreciation and thankfulness for the dedication, kindness, knowl- edge, humility, and professionalism of all who have worked with us. THE RESULT OF THIS JOURNEY – A MIRACLE! Our child for the first time on Wednesday spent 45 minutes on the soccer field with other disabled children, shin guards in place, exhibiting socially appropriate behavior, running and kicking a ball, following directions. Our miracle! She was happy and successful with a normal ev- eryday thing like a soccer practice. This is what a miracle looks like, feels like, and tastes like - salty tears! THROUGHOUT THIS JOURNEY, RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AND ITS STAFF have stood be- side us with encouragement, patience, hard work and an obvious love for what they do. They have provided the proverbial “home away from home” for our fami- ly time and time again. Could we have done all of this without Ron- ald McDonald House? No. They are part of our miracle! We fully expect that new issues will arise and existing issues will continue but we are confident that the Ronald McDonald team will stand ready to assist in whatever way they can. Our heartfelt thank you as our daughter now stretches her wings and begins to experience for the first time those things which to date she could only watch from the sidelines. Denise Austin 9.16.12

WHAT DOES A MIRACLE LOOK

LIKE, FEEL LIKE, AND TASTE LIKE? To answer that you might start by iden-tifying what your ex-pectations are for the situation presented. We, like all parents, naturally had cer-tain fundamental expectations for our daughter, now nearly 11 years old, when we discovered that she was on the way. We expected that she would walk, talk, grow, go to school, join the soccer team, be a cheerleader, and so on. When Adrianna was born with Down Syn-drome our expecta-tions for her future

Sisters Give Back to Ronald McDonald House

Karsyn’s Krusaders Renovates Ronald McDonald House Deck

Golfers from Whirlpool - Amana tee it up for RMHC

Coralville Kiwanis Club Delivers for Families

Kyndal, 9, and Keetyn, 7, recently made a do-nation of $2,630 thanks to proceeds from their cookbook, “Whipping Cancer.”

Their project began in 2011 after the sisters from Morning Sun entered the pageant cir-cuit, with Kyndal taking the Lil’ Miss Southeast Iowa title, and Keetyn being selected as Lil’ Miss Louisa County Fair.

After a friend was diagnosed with cancer the sisters decided to compile a book of recipes to honor people who were fighting, or had fought, cancer. Along with the recipe, the girls asked for a short paragraph on the person being honored in the cookbook. The sisters and their mom, Jill, relied on word of mouth through friends and family to sell the cookbooks. In the end, Kyndal and Keetyn were able to provide a wonderful gift to support families staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City.

For the third year in a row, Whirlpool - Amana Division sponsored a golf outing in Coralville to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa. Golfers enjoyed a fun day of networking on the course, along with the opportu-nity to win some great prizes throughout the day. Whirlpool met its goal of raising $50,000 through the event, with proceeds benefiting both Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

Our thanks to Whirlpool - Amana Division for its outstanding support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa!

Every Tuesday morning the Kiwanis Club in Coralville hosts a meeting for its club members. Generously, the club donates its leftover breakfast items for families at the Ronald McDonald House to enjoy following the meeting.

Karsyn’s Krusaders is an Iowa charity focused on creating awareness and fund-ing for individuals with cancer, specifically children, through sponsorship with-in the racing community. Founders of Karsyn’s Krusaders, Andy and Jessica Miller, are very familiar with how much the services that Ronald McDon-ald House can provide in a time of need. The Miller’s youngest child, Karsyn, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 3. Throughout her treatment, they were able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

With those memories in mind, Karsyn’s Krusaders designated the priority to completely remodel the deck at the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. This past July, donations were made, volunteers coordinated and in a few short weeks, the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House had a newly renovated deck! As a special treat, two time Corn Belt Clast Late Model Champion and four time “Yankee Dirt Track Classic” winner Chad Simpson was available at the dedication for photos and autographs.

Gold Wing Riders Visit the Ronald McDonald House

In what has become an annual tradition since 2004, Gold Wing riders from chapters across Iowa visited with a huge supply of donations and pull-tabs, continuing the group’s long standing commitment to families and children at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City.

Arriving in the afternoon, riders enjoyed a BBQ and tours of the House. Despite the rain, over 75 Gold Wing members delivered $8,054 in cash donations, almost 1,500 lbs of pull-tabs, and boxes of Wish List supplies.

New this year, riders also delivered over 300 new infant clothing items for families with children in the neonatal intensive care. Families will receive a new clothing item for their newborn as they are able to return home.

A special thank you to this year’s Iowa District Directors, Lonnie & Diane Borseth, for their work on the 2012 ride and to all of the riders who braved the elements!

4SPECIAL EVENTS | FALL 2012

Team RMHC “My son Ian was diagnosed with cancer, synovial sarcoma, when he was three years old. We lived in Cedar Rapids, but located one of the leaders in the field of treatment in New York City. Initially we stayed in a hotel, but quickly moved into the Ronald McDon-ald House in Manhattan

The normalcy of the Ronald McDonald House was the biggest gift. Not just the kitchen and dining room, the playroom and computer room, but also just knowing that every kid and every family there was going through a life changing event.

When we returned to Iowa, with Ian doing well and with clear scans, I set out on a journey to try to repay in some small way all of the support that had been given to our family. One of my first calls was to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City. Executive Director Kristin Roberts and I met to discuss ideas, and she suggested that RAGBRAI, as a signature Iowa event, might be a good way to raise awareness and money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Chapters located throughout the state in Iowa City, Des Moines, and Sioux City.

Along with help from staff at the Ronald McDonald House, we put together the first RAGBRAI team for Ronald McDonald House Charities - a group of 10 members riding across Iowa in our RMHC jerseys the last week of July. As we were riding, people would ride up next to us, and tell us stories about their family members, co-workers and friends who had personal experiences with RMH, and how much they appreciated what the House does. Families opened up their homes, giving us a respite after 40-90 miles of riding during the day. And, most importantly, the team

raised $15,000 through their own fundraising, which translates into 214 nights for families to stay at the Iowa City Ronald McDonald House.

We would like to invite you to join our RAGBRAI team. There are a lot of ways to do it. Ride with us! Our goal is to double our team by next year. You can ride all week, or just one day, or anywhere in between. Open your home to the team, if you happen to be on the ride route. Sponsor a rider. Sponsor meals. Sponsor the jerseys. We would love to have you join the team, in any way you can. If you’re interested, please contact Beth Pfohl, one of our fearless leaders during the week, at [email protected] or 319-356-8302.”

Governor’s Annual Steer Show Delivers Again

Sporting Clays Charity Shoot

For the 30th consecutive year, the Iowa Beef Indus-try Council and the Cattlemen’s Association joined forces with the Governor’s Office to organize the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. Each year the event raises money for the three Ronald McDonald Houses located in Iowa in Sioux City, Des Moines and Iowa City. This year’s event raised a record $150,360, the highest grossing auction to date, and eclipsed $2 mil-lion total raised since 1983.

Of special note, the “Thanks a Million” steer, sponsored by the Volunteer Boards of Iowa Ronald McDonald Houses, was named this year’s “People’s Choice.” The steer was shown by the Aaron & Jaime Burdorf family, who stayed at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City while their son, Blake, was under-going medical treatments.

To read more about the results, head to www. iabeef.org.

For the seventh consecutive year, sporting clay enthusiasts came together on a beautiful Iowa morning in support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa.

This year’s event hosted 27 teams of five shooters, as familiar faces were joined by new ones. Close to 50 volunteers helped register participants, set up lunch, assist on the course, and much more. Highlights of the day included a 50/50 raffle concluding with a cannon blast, the top two teams separated by just three points, and Board Member Christine Zimmerman talking about her family’s experience staying at the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City.

Congratulations to Team Blackhawk, comprised of Mike Freel, Lindy Roberts, Joe Boyle, Jim Bohr, and Damon Carr, for taking the top score this year with 677 out of a possible 750 targets hit.

A special thank you to our 2012 Platinum and Gold Sponsors: Jim & Cin-dy Scott; Johnson Controls; Colony Heating & Air; Highland Hideaway Hunting; Scheels; C.H. Robinson Worldwide; Oral Surgery Associates of Iowa City; Mike Hoover

5 FALL 2012 | AROUND THE HOUSE

AROUND THE HOUSE

“Coming out of high school in the Spring of 2009 I was feel-ing tired and uninspired from academia. I started volun-teering at The Ronald McDonald House in the fall of 2009. I was looking for something to occupy my time, but what I found was much more. I was born and raised in Iowa City, but had only heard about the house my senior year of high school from a friend who had volunteered there. I started volunteering not knowing what to expect from the experi-ence but I immediately made a great friendship with an-other volunteer. I vividly remember coming into the house every Friday at Noon and being excited for what I would do that day; no two days are ever the same at the house.

I am studying Therapeutic Recreation at The Univer-sity of Iowa. Spending my time giving back to The Ronald McDonald House gave me inspiration and motivation to volunteer. I am now the Executive Director of a volunteer organization on campus. Volunteering at the house reen-ergizes me when I get to spend time there. The staff and the families are so gracious and kind and I can leave know-ing I’ve made a difference. The pure mission of the organi-zation keeps me coming back again and again. I attribute a piece of my success to starting volunteering at The Ronald McDonald House. Without the warmhearted staff I’m not sure I’d be where I am today. Thank you RMH.”

“I was born in Wausau, Wisconsin but grew up in Prince Albert, Saskatch-ewan and Marion, Iowa. I am always torn on which of the three to call home. My major is Health & Human Physiology with a focus on pre-dentistry. I started volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House because two of my friends became volunteers and loved it so much that I wanted to get involved. I’m very excited to be a Night Manager because I am able to get to know a lot more of the families as well as understand more of what the Ronald McDonald House Charities provide.”

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSECHARITIES OF EASTERN IOWA

2011-12 ANNUAL REPORT

FAMILY. It’s a word nearly all of us have grown up with, drawing stick figures of our parents, siblings, and maybe even a family pet at an early age. It’s something many of us take for granted when the older sister is try-ing to be ‘helpful’ in telling us what to do or when parents give the ultimatum that we don’t agree with.

MY PERSPECTIVE OF THAT WORD changed dra-matically this year when my husband and I had our first child. Every new parent will tell you the emotions are more intense than they’ve ever known. And while I’ve always known Ronald McDonald Houses kept families together during tough times, this year the word “family” and the sentiment that surrounds it were brightly and boldly highlighted for me everywhere I looked.

EACH OF THE 3,500 INDIVIDUALS who laid their head down on our pillows at night this past year reflected the strength families have when they are able to stick to-gether. They all came to us looking for a “home away from home” while their child was seen at a nearby medi-cal facility. Continually, these families astound us at their ability to persevere through challenging times. There’s the family who stayed with us for over 100 days because their newborn arrived too early and I never saw them be-cause they were at the hospital before I walked through our front door in the morning and came back to the House long after I had left for the day. Or there’s the fam-ily that decided to leave their own hometown and make Iowa City home because that’s where the best medical care their child can receive is located.

THE GRATITUDE THESE FAMILIES HAVE for us in keeping their family together is humbling like when the grandfather was told he owed $15 and asked if he could have $150 put on his credit card. He’s joined by thou-sands of dedicated individuals who expand that word of “family” to those who support us in so many different ways: volunteers who give up three hours of their time

on a weekly basis, groups that come in to cook a meal for our families, individuals who give generously of their own hard-earned dollars, and the staff that goes far be-yond the last line in their job description of “other duties as assigned.”

YOU CAN EVEN FIND THIS SENSE OF FAMILY at the heart of our race, charity shoot and golf outing fundrais-ing committees and events. A new event this year, Team RMHC, raised money for the three Ronald McDonald Houses in Iowa as these individuals rode across the state of Iowa on RAGBRAI meeting past House families along the way. They started the week as a team and ended as a family.

AND BEYOND THE WALLS of the Ronald McDonald House, we extended our family to include the five new scholarship winners we support in their higher education dreams and the ten new organizations that received grant dollars, further pushing our mission into the community.

I COUNT MYSELF LUCKY that my family grew far be-yond one little guy this year; it grew by the thousands in each and every one of you. What’s even more staggering is we have plenty of room in our hearts for more broth-ers and sisters, so feel free to invite someone to join our family.

For the tenth year in a row, hundreds of piano students

descended on the Northpark Mall in Davenport this spring to

show their support for the Ronald McDonald House.

Piano Celebration strives to accomplish two goals over the

weekend at North Park Mall. First, organizers look to move

forward the efforts of “Piano for a Richer Life”, which encour-

ages people of all ages to experience the long-term benefits

playing the piano can have on their life. Second, it looks to raise

money for the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City. Over the

past ten year, piano students and sponsors of Piano Celebration

have raised over $280,000 for the Ronald McDonald House of

Iowa City.Special thanks to the 2012 Grand Sponsors: Agnew Henrick-

sen Hewitt & Associates – Merrill Lynch, Modern Woodmen

Dillard’s is teaming up again this year with Ronald Mc-Donald House Charities through sales of a special custom edition of the Southern Living Christmas Cookbook. All proceeds from the sale of the cookbooks benefit local Ronald McDonald Houses operated within Dillard’s markets. Last year this promotion generated $9,801.54 for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa. Dillard’s has supported RMHC since 1994 with various holiday fundraisers, including sales of the Southern Living Christmas Cookbook for the past five years.
