    The Library Celebrates Ten YearsVision: A world in which Mary Baker Eddy and her unique contribution to humanity are better understood and appreciated, and the ideas she discovered are more broadly touching, educating, inspiring, and changing peoples lives.

    Mission: The Mary Baker Eddy Library provides public access and context to original materials and educational experiences about Mary Baker Eddys life, ideas, and achievements.

    ReachingourfirsttenyearsonSeptember28isanachievementonsomanylevels.ManyofyouhavesupportedtheLibrarysinceitsinceptiontwelveyearsago.Withoutsuchloyaltyitwouldhavebeenhardtocontinueprovidingalltheserviceswehaveforcommunitygroups,forMappariumvisitors,andforthoseseekingresearchandreferenceservices.

    AnotherhugeachievementisinthecompositionandprofessionalismofthestaffsomeofwhomhavebeenwiththeLibrarysincethebeginningandmanyforfiveyearsormore.

    Visitor Serviceswelcomesover60,000visitorsayear,interactswithnumerousschoolandtourgroups,andrunsaprofitableshopwhichsellsitemsrelatedtotheLibraryscollections,vision,andmission;

    Research & Reference Servicesanswerover5,000researchqueriesayearwhiletheydivedeeplyintothecollectionstolearnandsharemoreaboutMaryBakerEddyslife,achievements,andideas;

    LibraryCurators and ArchivistpreserveandmaintaintheLibraryscollectionstotheindustryshigheststandards;

    TheCommunications TeammaintainsagrowingwebsiteandsocialmediapresencethatincludesprovidingamobileappforvisitorsandthosewhowishtovisittheLibraryremotely.Theteamreachesotheraudiencesthroughprintandeditorialcoverage;

    Creative ServicesproducesallourmarketingmaterialincludingfouronlinenewslettersayearthatcontainoriginalresearchandcurrentinformationaboutwhatsnewattheLibrary;

    TheExhibits TeamproducesinspirationalandeducationalexhibitsanddisplaysaboutthelifeandideasofMaryBakerEddy;

    ThePrograms Teamputsonmorethanadozenadultprogramsayear,caterstohundredsofchildrenthroughschoolvacationprogramming,andputsonthreeannualcommunityeventsthatdrawmanythousandsoffamiliestotheLibrary.Throughprogramming,theLibraryalsopartnersandsupportsculturalandcharitablegroupsinourcommunity,workingwiththemtoimprovethelivesofthoselivinginunderservedareasofourcity.

    Thankyou,Librarysupporters!AndthankstothestaffoftheLibraryfortheirdedicationandfocusontheLibrarysmission.Overtenyears,weveseenincreasinginterestintheLibraryandhavecometoknowourvisitorsawholelotbetter.WelookforwardinthenextfewyearstocreatinganewlookfortheentranceoftheLibraryandproducingpermanentexhibitsinthatspacethatbetterintroduceMaryBakerEddytoapublicthatoftendoesnotevenknowhername.

  • The Call for Culture

    AweekbeforeitsactualanniversarydateofSeptember28,theLibrarycelebrateditsfirsttenyearsonThursdayevening,September20.Itwasanoccasionmarkedbyjoy,pride,andreflection.WithareceptioninQuotesCaf,serenadedbyastringquartetfromProjectSTEP,alocalmusicprogramforyouth,about130well-wishersgath-eredtohonorthismilestone.WitharetrospectiveslideshowoftheLibrarysfirsttenyearsproject-ingonthewall,theexcitedcrowdawaitedthestareventoftheevening,thekeynoteaddressbyworld-renowneddirectorPeterSellarsonTheCallforCulture.

    TheproceedingsopenedwithawelcomefromLibraryTrusteeChairMargaretRogers.ShecommentedupontheLibrarysfoundingvisioninpullingdownthewallsofprotectionthathadbuiltuparoundMaryBakerEddy,sothataresearch,educational,andculturalinstitutioncouldbeborn,allowingscholarsandthegeneralpublictohavefreeopenaccesstoherpapers,history,andideas.SalutingVirginiaHarrisandotherfoundersoftheLibrary,Rogersrecognizedthetremendouscourageittooktoestablishthisnewformofoutreachtotheworld.

    LesleyPitts,theLibrarysPresident,echoedRogersssentiments,characterizingtheLibrarysopeningasaboldmove,befittingthemagnitudeofitsnamesakesaccomplishmentsandideas.NothingthatMaryBakerEddydidcouldeverbecalledsmall,notedPitts.Atthetenyearcrossroads,PittsassertedthatthevisionfortheLibrarycouldbesimplystatedasaworldinwhichMaryBakerEddyandheruniquecontri-butionstohumanityarebetterunderstoodandappreciatedandtheideasshediscoveredaremorebroadlytouching,educating,inspiring,andchangingpeopleslives.But,sheadded,itsnolessaboldstatementthanwhentheLibraryopenedtenyearsago.

    PeterSellars,joinedbyLibraryProgramsPro-ducerJonathonEder,thenboundeduponstage,signalingthekindofenergyandenthusiasmhewouldshareduringhisaddress.Inframingtheeveningstopic,TheCallforCulture,EderexplainedthatSellarsscareerinansweringtoso-cietalneedsandvoicesthroughtheartsservesasamodelandinspirationtotheLibraryandotherculturalinstitutionsastohowtomakeuniquecollectionsandareasofexpertiserelevantandmeaningfultothewidercommunity.

    Sellars,whohasbeendescribedasthemostremarkableanduniquetalentintheartsinourtime,drewonthedepthofhisvisionforcultureanditsimportancetosocietytoconsidertheaccomplishmentsandpromiseoftheLibrary.

    Congratulationsonthetenthanniversary,heexclaimedebulliently.Thatsareallygreatsignthatsomethingiscorrect,and,meanwhile,thatyouveonlyjustbegun,anditsnowtimetoradi-calize.Andthatsthrilling.Itsathrillingmomentwhenyouhaveatrackrecord;youhavesome-thingyouveachieved,somethingtobeproudof,andyousay:Nowwhatisthehorizon?Andwhereisthevision?Andhowfarcanthatvisiontakeus?Sellarswentontogiveinsightsfromhiscareerontheimportanceofaboldnessofvi-sionandasensitivityofspiritinmakingroomforthefullbreadthofhumanitytohaveavoiceandstakeinthebuildingofsocietyandculture.

    Sellarscoveredahugeexpanseinhisremarks,engaginginsuchthemesasdemocracyandtheartsandtheimportanceoffearlessnessinopen-ingthehumanspirittotransformationanduplift.Theworkwedoincultureandtheartsistocre-ateazoneofnofear,heexplained.ReferringtotheLibrary,hesaid,Thishastobeaplacethatdemonstratesnofear.

    Sellarsaddressedsomeofthemajorcurrentsde-finingthe21stcenturyandtheirrelationshiptotheoutreachofculturalinstitutions.Thescience

    ofthe21stcenturyisgoingtobethescienceofsharing,heobserved.Inthiscontext,hesawtheLibrarysmovetowardsopenness,transparency,andengagementasverymuchinstepwiththismomentum.Ithinkoneofthemostpowerfulthingsyouvedonesofaristheradicalmoveto-wardsopenness.Thatisthehallmarkofthe21stcentury...radicallyopen,radicallyopenended.

    AstandingovationgreetedSellarsattheconclu-sionofhistalk,whichsetthetoneandofferedaroadmapfortheLibrarygoingforwardwithfurtheroutreachandembraceofthechangingvistaofthe21stcentury.SellarsisperhapsbestknownforaskingnewquestionsofclassicworksoftheWesterncanonandbringingthemintoacontemporarycontext.Whenyouredealing,asweallare,withsacredtexts,withMozart,withShakespeare,thesetextsarewaitingforyoutoaskadeeperquestionandtheywillgiveyouananswertheyhavenevergivenbeforetoanyonewhentheyareaskedaquestionthatnoonehaseverasked.OnecouldsaythatitwaswithadeeptrustinthatspiritofinquirythattheLibraryopenedtenyearsago,aspiritwhichwillcon-tinuetodefineitswaygoingforward.

    correct ... and its now time to radicalize.

  • The Annotation Project

    HaveyoueverusedthecomputerdatabaseinResearch&ReferenceServicestosearchMaryBakerEddyslettersandmanuscripts?Manypeople,includingacademicscholars,independentresearchers,andChristianSci-encechurchmembers,havefoundittobeawonderfulresource;however,nearlyeverydaytheLibraryisaskedifthisdatabasewilleverbeavailableonlineforremoteaccess.

    Inordertomeettheneedsofourremotepa-trons,theLibraryishappytoannouncethatstaffmembersareworkingonapilotproject,theAnnotationProject.TheirgoalistomakeaselectionofMaryBakerEddyssermons,examplesofwhichcanbefoundinherbookMiscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,availableonline.

    Allofthesedocumentswillbecompletewithannotation,contextthatwillhelppeopleunderstandeachdocumentbetter.Annotationincludesprovidinginformationthatwasobvioustothewriteratthetimebutmaybelittleknowntoday.Rightnow,thereislittleinthewayofannotationprovidedinourcurrenttranscriptions;thereisnothingtotellthereaderwhoaparticularpersonwasortodefineobscureChristianSciencetermi-nology.Thecurrenttranscriptionsaresome-whatmoreaccessibletothoseentrenchedinthehistoryofChristianScienceandthewritingsofMaryBakerEddy.Forthemajorityofpeople,thereislittlehelpastheynavigatehistoricdocuments.

    Welookforwardtosharingthiscollectionwithyou,furtheringtheLibrarysongoingmissionofprovidingpublicaccessandcon-texttoourcollections,andallowingourre-moteLibraryuserstheabilitytoaccessLibraryresourcesfromanywher
