Fall 2012VERA LLOYDPRESBYTERIAN HOME& FAMILY SERVICES, INC. ulletinB
M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N TThe Mission of Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home and Family Services is to share
Christ’s healing love with children, youth and families in crisis.
On October 11, the Vera Lloyd campus was honored by a visit from the First Lady of Arkansas, Ginger Beebe and members of her staff. Because of their childhood experiences, both she and the Governor take special interest in programs that provide services for the children and youth of Arkansas. During her first visit to the campus, Mrs. Beebe toured Williamson Hall, the Lyon Multipurpose Building and two of the youth homes. She appeared to especially enjoy interacting with students in our school, who were anxious to share their projects with her.
The young man who led the tour was rewarded with a picture taken with the First Lady. Mrs. Beebe learned about the programs and services that Vera Lloyd provides for youth in need of care. The youth and staff were grateful that the First Lady was able to include a stop at Vera Lloyd Home in her busy schedule.

Girls’ Transition Home Opens Vera Lloyd is proud to announce the opening of our girls’ transition home this past July. The three young ladies that are currently participating in the program live in the Grey House. Two are attending the University of Arkansas at Monticello and one is seeking her cosmetology license. In addition to attending school,
one of our young ladies is working part-time. We are excited that we are able to provide guidance, support and a nurturing environment. The boys’ transition home was relocated to the Pop Davis Guesthouse.

The extraordinarily hot summer of 2012 makes us even more grateful for the cool days of autumn. To me, autumn means Thanksgiving. I love the holiday and the reasons behind the celebration: friends, family and appreciation for God’s bountiful blessings. I can’t count my blessings without including all the wonderful, generous people who enable Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home & Family Services to continue this life-changing ministry. You are
blessings for which all of us at Vera Lloyd are most grateful. I am also grateful for the staff of Vera Lloyd who do the hard work, day after day, of helping young people believe in themselves and in their inherent worth as children of God. Some thoughts from one of the family teachers about what being a family teacher means to her:
“Being a Family Teacher doesn’t mean you are a baby-sitter; it means you are entrusted as a healing agent with bleeding hearts and crippled spirits.”“Being a Family Teacher isn’t about warm and fuzzy feelings but about real and sometimes painful moments of discovery, growing, and walking into a new way of life.”“Being a Family Teacher isn’t about being a hero; it’s about providing a springboard for each youth into a future they could not have otherwise imagined or attained.”
Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving! Lyn Whaley CEO
A Message from Lyn Vera Lloyd Benefits from Golf Tournament

The Kickoff Party with silent auction was held on October 3, at the Independent Insurance Agent Association in North Little Rock. Vera Lloyd was selected as one of eight charities who benefited from the generosity of the sponsors, silent auction, and golf teams.
Thirty-eight teams made up the Four Person Scramble held at Maumelle Country Club on October 4. Vera Lloyd wishes to thank BancorpSouth, their employees and everyone involved in helping to make this tournament a success.

News from MonticelloVera Lloyd Welcomes New School Superintendent
One of our young men in the boys’ transition home enlisted in the Marines. His Vera Lloyd home wishes him the best. The campus held a send-off party for him prior to his departure.
The youth are beginning to work on their float for the Monticello Christmas Parade.
The low-ropes course is completed and is being utilized routinely by the youth. The course is designed to help them improve leadership and problem-solving skills.

Youth in the News
Lisa Brown is the new School Superintendent for our on-campus school. She comes to Vera Lloyd after having 30 years in education. The past 19 years she has worked for the Monticello School District. She was told about the available position at Vera Lloyd by a friend. After working in public schools for years, Lisa said she wanted a job where she knew she had the opportunity to make a significant impact on lives. She was “waiting on a call from God”, Lisa states. After many prayers she was led to her new position at Vera Lloyd. During the day the students study literature, history, math and science and work on their on-line, web-based tutorials. The tutorials are set up for each student’s specific level of education. The teachers add assignments and the students work through them at their own pace. Their computer use is monitored at all times and the youth have strict rules for the use of computers. The students also spend one hour per day in physical education. A certified teacher in P.E. comes to campus to work on various exercise programs with the youth. We are happy to have Lisa Brown and her new faculty, as a part of our Vera Lloyd family and in her short time here she has made a positive impact on our school and our students.
Jalen Garmon is a student at the University of Arkansas-Monticello, but almost every day during his lunch break at school, he comes to the Vera Lloyd campus to play basketball with our DYS youth. He is a mentor and a great example for these young men. Jalen graduated from Mills High School in Little Rock. He is a Sophomore at UAM
where he is on an academic and football scholarship. Jalen is currently studying math and history and hopes to teach and coach after graduating. Jalen shared some of his thoughts with us: “I am just a kid with coaches and mentors that want me to develop more as a man than a football player. Football is just a door that’s used to help me appear cool to these guys. I just hope when it’s all said and done it will carry over to them to learn from their mistakes and help someone else along the way. For Jesus himself said for the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve. I’d just like to thank the staff at Vera Lloyd for allowing me to be around their children. More and more they become the highlight of my day. Thank you.”

The Trimble Home joined Westover Hills Presbyterian Church at the end of July for an overnight trip complete with pizza party and swimming. The youth also joined the church for their annual Ferncliff Picnic on Sunday afternoon, October 7th. After the feast, fishing, canoeing and paddle boating were some of the activities enjoyed by many of the picnickers. They had a great time! Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church has been very active with our youth over the past few months. During the summer they took two
different groups to Wild River Country. They provided funds for three scholarships for youth in the Transitional Living Program to assist with college and
taught cooking and etiquette classes for all of the boys and girls on campus. Pastor Branch continues his Bible Study class with our youth.
Many thanks to the “Over The Hill Gang” from Second Presbyterian Church for continuing their work on our homes’ decks, beds and wardrobes. The volunteer hours these men have given to Vera Lloyd has saved Vera Lloyd thousands of dollars. Second Presbyterian PW groups continue to remain very active with the Barton Home. Some of the recent activities included a trip to Wild River Country and plenty of pool time over the summer. They provided outfits, school supplies, backpacks and provided new chairs for the home. Kirk in the Pines from Hot Springs Village
recently provided much needed funds for new beds and mattresses for the boys’ transition home. They are continuing to mentor and provide for the needs of these young men
throughout the year. Graceminster PC from Monroe and The Hummer Ladies provided the Walton House with a trip to Magic Springs and a new TV for the home. In addition, they visited the youth before school and delivered school supplies for the new school year.
Deverick Franklin, has been hired as the new Transitional Living Home Coordinator and Clare, his wife, will be the program assistant. They have been with Vera Lloyd for seven years working as Family Teachers and felt they have been led by God to help on a larger scale. They are excited for the opportunity to build relationships with the youth and help these young men and women with their life plans. “The hardest thing to do,” said Deverick, “is to convince these youth how to be successful, and that they can be successful.” Vera Lloyd is happy to have the Franklins guiding the youth while teaching them to drive, budget, cook and other important aspects of daily life.
Vera Lloyd employees Vanessa and Brina share activities from Holmes Chapel.

You can imagine with 48 youth ages eight to 21, there are many daily needs. Below is a list of needs for our seven homes:
Current and Ongoing Needs:
Christmas Wish List Will Go Out Soon! Within the next few weeks our youth will make their Christmas wish list. If you or your congregation would like to be a part of providing Christmas gifts for our youth, please contact Renee Dickins at (501) 666-8195 or email her at [email protected].
I called Ruth to thank her for her gift to Vera Lloyd. Noticing she was from Missouri, I asked how she knew about our home. Her response, “I was there and I remember mother Lulu Williamson.” When I went to visit her, I was delighted when she shared the
following story with me. Ruth was born in Hamburg, Arkansas in 1924. Growing up, she was often responsible for the care of her two siblings, hindering her ability to regularly attend school. Two local Presbyterian women took notice of her absence and suggested she go to Vera Lloyd where she might have a better life. In 1937, while the country was recovering from the Depression, she chose to enter Vera Lloyd
Home. “Mother Williamson,” Ruth recalled, “would arrive on campus, honk her horn, and the youth would run to the car to visit her.” Her experience at Vera Lloyd was a very happy one and prepared her for a wonderful life. Ruth graduated from Monticello High School in 1943 and attended Arkansas College (Lyon College today) in Batesville, where she met her husband, Clarence. They married, raised a family, and eventually settled in Missouri. Her husband passed away about 20 years ago, and she now lives in a senior retirement home. Mrs. Haley told me that she is quite social, has plenty to do and is active in her church. Ruth sent me a letter and in it she stated, “I am grateful to the Presbyterian Churches and donors for supporting the Vera Lloyd Home. I hope to attend the next reunion if my health allows. I am 88-years-old and still very active. May God bless the staff and other supporters of Vera Lloyd - I’m eternally grateful to everyone.”
