Scoompa Foompa Tri Region Ying Fair, It’s your brain and smarts that got you all here. Scoompa Foompa you’ve all impressed me. If you love science, you can make history!
What do you get when you accomplish science feats,
Testing your ideas with laboratory sheets? What hypothesis are you to arrive at?
What good to our World will result from that? I really like the thought of it ...
Scoompa Foompah you are a science star, Given good science you’ll surely go far! Get a good job with happiness, too,
Like the Scoompa Foompa Tri Region Ying Crew. You are so Cool!
Scoompa Foompa Tri Region Ying Fair, We’ve got more to make you aware
Scoompa Foompa you’ve all impressed me. If you learn science, you can make history!
Working a great project takes a student quite a while; It unravels cellular mysteries
and makes your judges smile. But its mind‐racking work and things do go wrong.
Researching and writing can take all day long The way that science does ...
Scoopma Foompa Dr. Ying supports ya! Use engineering to make your dreams take start!
You’ll land a job that takes care of you And show off your stuff to the Scoompa Foompa Crew!
Scoompa Foompa Tri Region Ying Fair, It’s your brain & smarts that got you all here. Scoompa Foompa you’ve all impressed me. If you learn science, you can make history!
What do you get when you mix reagents in a lab? Reactions and results that make the geeks all gab!
Graphing your data is some of what it takes, But your discussion really is the icing on the cake!
The scientist and engineer ...

March, 2012 Dear Science Fair Participant, Welcome to the Awards Ceremony of the Sixth Annual Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair! I commend you for the curiosity, intellect, and hard work which have brought you here. Even more, I commend what you will do with these powerful assets as you go forward. Now — this very moment — you launch the rest of your life! You now join the ranks of so many Upstate New York youth using the science fair door to enter a vista of unlimited opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Take this step bravely and confidently! The greatest need for new skilled employees in the next decade is among engineering, sci-ence and the skilled trades. These hold such promise for people with potential such as yours. To take advantage of such potential, however, you must continue to explore your talents and abilities, study with determination, and grab every chance such as this annual foray into research and design with the science fair. As the Ying TRSEF says, “Try on your dreams!” The 2lst century desperately needs more scientists to discover, to invent and to build. Will you answer the call? For six years it was my privilege to serve as the Chairman of the Science Committee for the U.S. House of Representatives. Experts from far and wide told the Congress and all who listened that, in large measure, our future will be determined by the path our young people choose to travel. Education, particularly in the areas of mathematics, science and engineering, has never had greater importance. Again, congratulations on being here today … and be in Syracuse to read my 2013 letter! Sincerely,
Sherwood Boehlert Sherwood Boehlert U.S. Congress (1983-2007)
Sherwood Boehlert serves as Honorary Chairperson
of the Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair.
We thank him for his heartfelt support of science education.

Master of Ceremonies & Keynote:
Tish Bresee
Mrs. Patricia Bresee, aka “Tish”, is STEM Education Program designer, coordinator and instructor at Kopernik Observatory and Science Center in Vestal, New York. Representing NASA and the Jet Propul‐sion Lab since 2009 as a Solar System Ambassador, Tish travels all around New York State and Pennsylvania to encourage young people to pursue careers in science, technology engineering and mathematics. Tish loves to work on a puzzle, mystery or a problem to solve and fell in love with the beauty of the night sky when she first saw the Andromeda Galaxy through a telescope. In her spare time she likes Star Trek and other classic sci fi movies. Samples of events Tish hosts as Ambassador:

Today’s Welcome Address: Dr. Emmanuel B. Awuah
Associate Vice President of Instructional Services at Onondaga Community College, Dr. Awuah was Director of Diversity Services, and a Professor of Sociol‐
ogy. He was an ACE Fellow at Northern Michigan University through the American Council on Education, the US premier higher education leadership development program preparing senior leaders to serve American colleges and universities.
Dr. Awuah has said, “One of the greatest revolutions that took place in the 20th century was the dynamic shrinking of distance on a global scale. And if we were to borrow a thought from a popular 1990s movie, we would say, “Honey, we shrunk the world!” This has serious implications and consequences for those of us who live on the planet in the 21st century. So we would be wiser if we each embraced
its promise and prepare to deal with its challenges.” The students in the Ying TRSEF have already demonstrated their ability to approach the future with deter‐mination and creativity. This bodes will for our state, our nation and our world.
A Personal Message from Dr. Nelson Ying
World‐class philanthropist Dr. Nelson Ying is also a scientist and entrepreneur, much of his work driven by his wish to inspire tomorrow’s science leaders today. In May of 2009, Dr. Ying incorporated the Ying TRSEF into his family of events and awards that have long served Florida, the Dr. Nelson Ying Science and Engineering Fairs or “YSEF.”
After visiting our fair in 2010, he was so deeply moved by our students and judges, and what he called “the miraculous gift” of such a beautiful campus that he doubled his challenge grant supporting the Ying TRSEF! He said:
Congratulations on a most successful, first ever stand‐alone Ying TRSEF. … [Y]our team did wonders. I feel blessed that I could participate, in the same year, in the 50th Awards Ceremony for YingExpo, and then this wonderful first Awards Ceremony for Ying TRSEF. Did you see the teachers' and students' shining eyes? Did you hear the happiness in the parents' and students' voices? Did you see the bright future ahead of us? I did!
We are delighted to announce that in December of 2011, Dr. Ying funded the launch of our new online mentoring partnership with icouldbe.org that will benefit our Upstate youth. Why?
It has been said that "A mind is a terrible thing to waste." Now with the partnership between icouldbe and the Dr. Nelson Ying Tri Region Science and Engineering Fair, we create a STEM portal. Not being close to a research university will no longer be a barrier for young men and women eager to obtain quality science education. By our working together, we can help improve science education.
Better education in science and in ethics can help to create a better world.

Special Awards Special awards demonstrate the deep commitment of these sponsors to our young people.
You win! Connect FIVE high school students in your Title One School
with online science fair mentors for only $10 each … not $300!
WHY? Because mentoring links young people with career role models! HOW? icouldbe.org, Dr. Ying and a Ying TRSEF angel donated $290/student. WHEN? Contact us NOW because this offer is for the first Title One school
from each of our counties that makes the commitment! WHAT? What does the district have to do?
1. Identify 5 high school students who want to do their own science fair projects. They commit to working one hour/week online with icouldbe.org, and attending the 2013 Ying TRSEF.
2. Recruit an adult to be the local “site monitor,” the person who does the on‐the‐ground tracking and internet‐safety work.
3. Raise $10/student for the icouldbe.org fee … because no one takes “free” very seriously. NB: The Ying TRSEF has a set‐to‐go fundraiser for you, but ONLY if you ask the Fair Director on Fair Weekend!
