The 2011 edition of the Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball heads into a new

direction under new coach Geno Frugoli . After spending the previous four seasons as head coach at Missouri-Kansas City, Frugoli looks to mold a team of returning players into a program that will consistently compete in the Southland Conference . “I can’t think of a better time to be a Lion, and I’m proud of being here,” Frugoli said . “Our program is changing in a very positive way, and I hope that everyone will want to share in that excitement with us . Southeastern Volleyball has a new attitude, new players, a new work ethic, passion, and even a new locker room . Our

goal is to transform these things into a championship-caliber program that the University can be proud of .” With a team that returns all six starters and 10 letterwinners, Frugoli and his staff look to gradually build the program into one of the best in the Southland Conference . “The plan this season is to earn a little respect around the conference and build a new culture based on passion and hard work,” Frugoli said . “Our players seem to be ready to respond to that, and I know our hard work last spring and this summer will make us better .” Bolstered by a roster that has eight underclassmen, including six sophomores, Southeastern will field one

of the youngest squads in the Southland Conference, but will also look to make its first postseason tournament since 2009. “Our roster is still young, especially in key roles, so the focus has to be on getting better each day,” Frugoli said . “There is still alot of playing time open on this team, so I expect everyone to be competing hard to play . However, making the conference tournament is a goal that I think this team can sink their teeth into .” Looking to replace departed starters Allison Jones and Alex Gree, Southeastern will rely on its senior class of Chelsea Barr, Arianne Cruckshank and Paige Dollison . “I feel like the seniors last year really played a large part in the team defense

and offense that was ran last year,” Frugoli said . “Both Allison and Alex set a baseline for what we need to accomplish this fall .” Cruckshank, who enters her final season ranked sixth in school history in assists (1,413) and eighth in assists per set (7.58), finished 12th overall in the Southland Conference in 2010 . She will be challenged by sophomore Lindsey Young, who led the team and finished 11th overall in the Southland Conference in assists per set (7 .74) . “Coaches often say that setters are the nucleus of the team . For us, it really is true,” Frugoli said . “Arianne and Lindsey can be a great tandem and are both very capable of leading this team to new heights .” In the middle, the Lady Lions return a solid nucleus in Dollison, junior Courtney Donald and sophomore Kinsey Williams along with the addition of freshman Zoe Douglas to the mix . “All our middles will be able to step in as needed, and are preparing hard so they can run our new offense .” Frugoli said . “I feel we are fortunate to have depth in such an important position .” Returning letterwinner Stephanie Mueller will lead a competition to hold down the right side while Megan McMillin and Barr will battle for the starting libero

spot and the tandem of Cherish Krohn and Taylor Buckner battling for the Lady Lions’ defensive specialist “I feel our ball control from this group is a very important piece to our success moving forward,” Frugoli said . “We have improved in this area and I’m encouraged by their focus to be flawless passers .” On the outside, Krohn, Buckner and freshman Elizabeth Ramee, Cherish Krohn, Taylor Buckner will all be pushing for playing time . “It will be encouraging to watch our outside hitters stabilize our offense,” Frugoli said . “Elizabeth should become a great Southland player over time, and Cherish and Taylor will be good role models for her development .” Four tournaments that include matches against Texas Tech, Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Southern Illinois, an 11-game home slate that includes non-

conference matches against intra-state rivals Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette, plus a challenging 16-match Southland Conference slate highlight the 2011 Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball schedule . “I’m really excited about this year’s schedule,” Frugoli said . “I’m looking forward to how our new system works and how our new kids will fit in. The schedule is very challenging . It’s going challenge us in certain aspects at certain times of the year and in other parts we’re going to be able to work on some things .” Southeastern will face intra-state rival Louisiana Tech three times during the season, including at the Louisiana Tech Invitational on Sept . 9 in Ruston . The Lady Lions will spend their first four weekends on the road competing in tournaments at Mississippi State, South Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Houston Baptist . “It’s going to work on our mental toughness,” Frugoli said of the Lady Lions grueling stretch to open the season . “Sometimes, it’s an advantage to go on the road early in the season because we get to know each other and we don’t have the distractions of playing at home . It’s going to be a time for us to grow together and get solid as a unit the first part of the year .” Southeastern opens Southland Conference play at Lamar (Sept . 22) and McNeese State (Sept . 24) before playing four straight matches at home beginning Sept . 29 against Northwestern State . Matches against Central Arkansas (Oct . 1), Nicholls (Oct . 4) and Stephen F . Austin (Oct . 8) close out the home schedule before Southeastern visits UTSA (Oct . 13), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Oct . 15), Nicholls (Oct . 18) and Sam Houston State (Oct . 22) for its next four contests . Southeastern closes out the regular-season with matches at Northwestern State (Nov . 10) and Central Arkansas (Nov . 12) before competing in the Southland Conference Tournament, scheduled for Nov . 17-19 in Conway, Ark .

Geno FrugoliHead Coach • First SeasonUNLV, 1992

Geno Frugoli, who spent four seasons as head coach at the University

of Missouri-Kansas City and was the chief recruiter and top

assistant for three years at Baylor, begins his first season as head volleyball coach at Southeastern . During Frugoli’s tenure at UMKC, the ‘Roos made a big jump in competitiveness in Frugoli’s third season on the sidelines, as he steered the ‘Roos to a 15-16 overall record and a 10-8 mark in league play . The 15 wins marked the third most wins in school history, while the 10 league wins tied the 1999 squad for the most all-time . UMKC made a late season surge to qualify for the Summit League Tournament for the first time since 2003. During the season, Frugoli guided UMKC to a series sweep over Oral Roberts . The ‘Roos snapped a 34-match losing streak to the Golden Eagles with their 3-1 win on Oct . 9 before com-pleting the first ever season sweep of ORU with a 3-1 triumph in early November . The program also opened some eyes early in the season, when it took a game off of No . 23 Kansas State in Manhattan on Sept . 1 . At the conclusion of the year, a pair of his student-athletes - Jamie Hagerman and Christiana McQuin - garnered Second Team all-Summit League honors. The duo were UMKC’s first all-league honorees since the 2005 season and the first teammates to earn post season recognition since 2003 . During Frugoli’s second season in Kansas City, he led the ‘Roos to a 12-20 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the Summit League . The 12 wins more than doubled his 2007 win total, and they were the most victories for the program since the 2002 season. McQuin became Frugoli’s first recruit to earn Summit League all-Freshman team honors after leading the squad with a .263 hitting percentage to go along with 233 kills . In his first season with the Kangaroos, Frugoli guided the team to a 5-27 overall record and a 2-14 mark in Summit League play . The squad started out the season with a 3-3 overall record, and it pushed ORU to a five-game match in October before ul-timately falling by the 3-2 score. It was the first time that UMKC forced a decisive fifth game with ORU since the 1993 season. In the classroom, two of Frugoli’s first three squads earned the AVCA Academic Team Award for having at least a 3 .30 cumu-lative team grade point average . In his three years with the ‘Roos a total of 32 student-athletes have been named to The Summit League Academic all-League team and 14 were selected to the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence . Additionally in 2009, Frugoli’s squad was one of just 49 teams in the nation to be recognized as a part of the NCAA’s academic reform program . Prior to moving to UMKC, Frugoli was primary recruiter

at Baylor University for three seasons . During his stint in Waco, he was the primary recruiter that brought in seven players that were ranked among the top-150 and the No .1 player from the state of Texas . The Bears’ 2006 class received national acclaim, as it was tabbed as the No . 16 ranked class in the country . During his time on the sidelines, Frugoli helped the Bears increase their RPI from 196 to a season-high 32 in 2006 . Ad-ditionally, he helped the squad to several victories over top-25 programs . The team also thrived in the classroom, as it received several academic all-District awards with a team grade point average of 3 .3 . Prior to joining the BU staff, Frugoli started the first men’s volleyball program in the state of Nebraska at Peru State College, and his team was ranked No . 7 in the nation when he departed . He was also in charge of the women’s program that was the conference runner-up with a 12-6 record in 2003 and advanced to the first MCAC conference final appearance in school history. During his year on the sidelines, Frugoli coached one honorable mention all-America selection, four all-conference selections and three Academic all-Americans . From 2000-03, Frugoli served as the head coach at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, S .D ., where he led his team to a top-10 NAIA regional ranking . He coached six all-conference, one all-Region and five Academic all-Americans in his three sea-sons . Frugoli also coached at the high school and club levels in Las Vegas from 1993-2000, including serving as director of opera-tions of All Sport Las Vegas Volleyball Club, Nevada’s largest club program, during that entire span . He compiled a 82-28 overall record during his time at Las Vegas High School . Additionally, his men’s team won the 1999 conference championship, and he was voted as the conference’s coach of the year . Frugoli received a bachelor’s degree in business administra-tion from UNLV in 1992 and a bachelor’s degree in education in 1996 . He also earned his master’s degree in educational leader-ship from the University of Sioux Falls in 2002 .
