The 2014 Southeastern Louisiana softball team will look to build on last year’s successful campaign that saw the Lady Lions set a single-season school record for victories and make its first Southland Conference Tournament appearance since 2008.

Southeastern returns five starters from the 2013 squad, which finished with a 32-22 squad. With three All-Southland Conference return-ers and a group of talented newcomers on this season’s roster, the Lady Lions have high hopes for the upcoming campaign.

The Lady Lions will return three start-ers in the infield. At third base, preseason All-Southland third baseman Megan Moore returns to hold down the hot cor-ner. A pair of seniors – second baseman Megan McCollum and first baseman Tori Sheppard – will provide Southeastern with a veteran right side of the infield. Sophomore Amber Sather, who led the team with 11 home runs and was named to the All-Southland and All-Louisiana teams as a fresh-man, will split time with Sheppard at first and serve as the designated player when Sheppard is in the lineup.

Southeastern head coach Pete Langlois is confident in his infield corps.

“We’re excited about the talent we have returning in the infield,” Langlois commented. “We expect Amber and Megan Moore to be consistent producers in the heart of our lineup. Megan McCollum is as good defensively as any second baseman we’ve had here. She battled through injuries all last year and if this fall is any indication, we expect her production to return to the standard she set as a sopho-more,”

“We expect Tori to have a very good senior year,” Langlois said. “We trust her knowledge of our defensive philosophy and her ability to run our infield.”

Southeastern will have new starters at the key positions of shortstop and catcher. At short, junior Spencer Adkinson, a transfer from Faulkner State College, has the inside track on the starting position. Behind the plate, senior Caitlyn Fowler and freshman Lacey Fritz will compete for playing time.

“Spencer is an outstanding athlete, who we think can step in and be an effective short-stop,” Langlois commented. “At this point, Caitlyn’s ahead of Lacey defensively, but Lacey is more dangerous at the plate. We expect both of them to see time early in the season.”

In the outfield, Langlois will look to replace 2013 All-Southland seniors Michelle Duhe and Kelsey Nichols. The lone holdover is sophomore Katie Lacour, who posted a .380 batting average as a freshman – the highest by a Lady Lion since 2009 – on the way to earn-ing All-Southland and All-Louisiana honors.

“We lost a great leadoff hitter and center-fielder in Michelle,” Langlois said. “Fortunately for us, we have Katie to serve as a capable replacement in both spots. Katie had a tre-mendous freshman year and we expect her to continue to be a tough out day in and day out.”

The favorites to handle the corner outfield spots are senior Jessie Browne and fresh-man Brittney Tschoepe. Senior Logane Fuselier, sophomore Amanda Livaudais, sophomore Sloan Jenkins and freshman Mychal Truxillo will all compete for playing time in the outfield.

“We feel like we need to find a way to have Jessie’s bat in the lineup day in and day out,” Langlois said. “The firepower that a middle of the order that features Jessie with Amber, Megan Moore and Lacey brings is pretty entic-ing. Brittney may be the best pure athlete on our team and she really stood out in the fall. We’re fortunate with our depth in the outfield. We have a talented group that all are capable of helping us which is a good problem to have.”

In the circle, sophomore Taylor Bishop (8-9, 2.15 ERA) and senior Rachael Hellyer (11-2, 2.62 ERA) return to give a veteran pairing at the top of rotation. Junior Tori Stamper, junior Teresa Lemos, freshman Kasey Nielson and Adkinson could also see time in the circle, according to Langlois.

“Taylor is our ace and she proved what she could do towards the end of last sea-son,” Langlois said. “Rachael led us in wins last year and we expect her to be a valuable member of our rotation as a senior. Tori really impressed us in the fall and we think Kasey’s unique style will also make her useful in big situations.”

Southeastern was picked to finish fifth and sixth by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, respectively, in the Southland Conference preseason polls. The top six teams will advance to the Southland Conference Tournament, which this season will be hosted by the Lady Lions at North Oak Park.

“We really feel good about where we are heading into the season, especially offensively,” Langlois said. “We’re going to need hold up in the circle, which we’re confident that we can. The opportunity to compete for a Southland Conference championship in front of our home fans is one we have to take advantage of.”

Head Coach Pete Langlois20th Year at Southeastern

Southeastern Louisiana, 1992

After 19 seasons at the helm of the Southeastern softball program, head coach Pete Langlois is the winningest coach in school history. His 2013 squadreturnedtotheSouthlandConferenceTournamentafterafive-year absence.

Langlois is no stranger to postseason play, having led eight teams to the conference tournament as a member of the Southland Conference and the Trans America Athletic Conference. During his tenure, the Lady Lion program has continued to grow and improve.

The upgrading of Southeastern’s home facility, North Oak Park, has been one of the top accomplishments of Langlois’ tenure. The facility has had a press box, upgraded dugouts, a brick fence along the foul lines and a new scoreboard installed over the past three seasons. In the offseason leading up to the 2010 season, turf was laid in the team’s gym area to give the Lady Lions an indoor hitting facility. New out-door batting cages and a new ticket booth/entrance were also added. Southeastern’shomefieldisconsideredtobeoneofthetopfacilitiesinthe SLC and the immediate area.

Over the past 13 seasons, Langlois’ teams have produced a bevy of individual accolades including 47 all-SLC selections (six firstteam)and46all-Louisianapicks.In2004,SummerDelaneuvillewas named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year, while Karin Smith - the school’scareerleaderinhomeruns-wasnamedfirst-teamall-SLCandall-Louisiana. Duhe was named to the Academic All-District VI squad, marking the third of four straight years that one of Langlois’ players made the squad.

In2008,SherrillwasafirstteamAll-SouthlandConferenceand All-Louisiana selection. Rachel Ray, who became the school’s career strikeout leader as a senior, made her third appearance on the All-SLC team. Senior Brooke Lockhart was named to the Academic All-America team and helped Southeastern break the single-season home run record for the second straight year, hitting 43 home runs as a team.

The 2013 team returned to the league tournament for the firsttimesince2008,settinganewsingle-seasonschoolrecordwith32victories. The Lady Lions eliminated league champion McNeese State fromthetournament,earningitsfirstpostseasonvictorysince2002.Michelle Duhe, Kelsey Nichols, Katie Lacour, Megan Moore and Amber Sather all earned All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana honors.

In2007,RaywasafirstteamAll-SLCchoiceandAricaRodri-guez was named Louisiana Newcomer of the Year.

Most noticeably, the squad tied the then all-time record for single-season wins with 31, set a new mark for winning percentage in a single year winning 59 percent (31-22) of its games and won more conference games than ever before (16). The team also tied the school-record for wins in the post-season tournament with two as theLadyLionsknockedoffthesecondandthird-seededteamsfinishingwith a 2-2 record and nabbing third place honors.

The2002seasonwasn’tquiteasgoodas2001,butthefinishwas almost sweeter for Langlois as his team headed back to the South-landConferenceTournamentafterafifthplaceleaguefinish.TheLionsdidn’t win quite as many games or set as many records as the ‘01 squad, butthe2002teamdid,forthefirsttimeever,makeback-to-backtripsto the Southland Conference Tournament and came within one run of knocking off top-seeded and tournament host Northwestern State in thesemifinalstofinishthirdintheeventforthesecondstraightyear.

In 1998, Langlois led the Lady Lions into the Southland Con-ference and set the school’s then all-time record for wins with 31 and a berth in the SLC tournament while also setting numerous standards in the record books.

And the Southland Conference is certainly a place where the softball mentor is no stranger. As a former pitching and hitting coach for Nicholls State, Langlois contributed in the Lady Colonels’ phenomenal season of 1994 when they posted a 51-15 season and were Southland Conference Co-Champions.

Following his stint at Nicholls, Langlois joined the Southeast-ern staff as an assistant coach in 1995 under then-head coach Corrie Hill. After Hill resigned to take a similar position at Baylor University in the middle of the season, Langlois was the obvious choice to lead the Lady Lions.

Langloispickedupthedutiesasinterimheadcoach, finishingthe season with an overall 19-27 record, 11-18 with him at the helm. He was appointed as head coach following the season in June 1995.

In his time at Southeastern, he has guided two All-South Re-gion players, 29 All-Louisiana team members, 52 all-Conference players, 21 conference all-Academic team members and four CoSIDA Academic All-America honorees.

Before entering the collegiate ranks, Langlois was a successful club coach in his native Baton Rouge.

Langlois received a bachelor’s degree in business education from Southeastern in 1993. He is the proud father of daughters, Malorie (14) and Macie (10). Langlois married the former Yvette Miller in May 2008andthecouplewelcomedtheirfirstson,Jacques,inFebruary2011.

SoutheaStern LouiSiana univerSity SoFtbaLLOn December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Committee on Infractions has accepted summary disposition of the infractions case originally self-reported by Southeastern Louisiana Univer-sity almost one year prior, largely agreeing to the penalties self-imposed by the university. As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the university self-reported to the NCAA that 137 student-athletes competed without meeting eligibility requirements between the academic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with a majority of the violations occurring in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Most of the student-athletes failed to meet academic eligibility requirements to compete under NCAA rules. 86 percent of the student-athletes identified in the case went on to graduate from Southeastern or left the univer-sity in good academic standing. Athletics staff members responsible for academic advising and eligibility certi-fication during the time of the violations are no longer associated with the university. No current student-athlete at Southeastern participated while ineligible. Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victories in which ineligible student-athletes participated, scholarship reductions, and imposition of a two-year probationary period. The NCAA extended the probationary period to four years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financial penalty of $25,000. The probation terms do not include any postseason bans. Following identification of the infractions, Southeastern has implemented corrective actions that include the appointment of an assistant to the president for athletics compliance, the addition of a new compliance coordi-nator, the implementation of academic tracking software to strengthen the certification process and streamline monitoring, changes in the eligibility certification process to include oversight by institutional offices outside the Athletics Department, enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, and implementation of new procedures to improve academic advising of student-athletes. “We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us. These infractions occurred years ago, and current coaches, staff and administration are absolutely committed to ongoing compliance with all NCAA rules,” stated Athletics Director Jay Artigues.

Athletic AdministrationAfter a successful eight-season stint as Southeastern

Louisiana University’s head baseball coach, Jay Ar-tigues was named the school’s Director of Athletics

on Oct. 14, 2013. Named one of the rising head coaches in the college game prior to the 2013 season, Artigues compiled a 276-188 won-loss record in his eight years in charge of the Southeastern baseball program. Under Artigues the Lions established themselves as a growing force in the region having posted marquee victories over LSU, Tulane, South Alabama and Southern Mississippi. In 2010, the Lions posted a three-game sweep at Mississippi State and in 2012 added a two-game sweep of the Bulldogs, compiling a five-game win streak against the SEC power. Since Artigues took over the reins of the program, the Lions have produced three All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, a Capital One Academic All-American, the NCBWA National Stopper of the Year, the Southland Conference’s Player, Hitter, Relief Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference and Southland All-Academic players as well as Southeastern single-season and career record holders. Artigues, a native of Bay St. Louis, Miss., inherited a program that had not finished above .500 since 1998; after a 23-32 finish in his first year at Southeastern the Lions posted seven straight 30-plus win seasons, a school record 40 wins in 2010 and consecutive appearances in the Southland Conference Championship Game (2012 and 2013). In 2012, Southeastern racked up several national, regional and conference awards. Advancing to the champi-onship game of the Southland Conference Tournament, the Lions posted the second-highest win total (39-21) in school history and equaled their best conference finish (20-13, second overall). Leading the way were conference player and hitter of the year Brock Hebert, relief pitcher of the year Stefan Lopez and freshman of the year Andro Cutura. Lopez was named the 2012 National Stopper of the

Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association after establishing both Southeastern and the Southland’s single-season and career saves records, while he and Hebert each earned four All-America honors. Cutura, who won his final six decisions, was also named a Freshman All-American. Former Lion Wade Miley, a 2009 first-round pick of Arizona, represented the Diamondbacks in the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and was a finalist for the Na-tional League Rookie of the Year Award. He was honored by the Sporting News as their Rookie of the Year for the National League. In 2011, the Lions garnered national attention as they took two of three games from Florida International to open the season and ended Garrett Wittels attempt to break the Division I consecutive-game hit-streak record. The next weekend Southeastern earned wins over SEC-power Alabama, Central Florida and South Alabama. Artigues was named the LSWA Co-Coach of the Year in 2010 as the Lions set another school first after being nationally ranked at the Division I level. The Lions were nationally ranked for eight straight weeks, reaching as high as No. 17. Southeastern opened the 2010 campaign by winning its first 11 games en route to a school-best 40-19 overall re-cord and 21-12 mark in Southland Conference play. Besides its sweep over Mississippi State, Southeastern also posted a two-game sweep of in-state rival UL-Lafayette as well as wins over South Alabama and Tulane. Prior to becoming the 15th head baseball coach in Southeastern’s history, Artigues spent four seasons at Pearl River Community College where he posted a 168-51 record. The Wildcats won three conference championships and advanced to the JUCO World Series during his tenure. In his final season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats to a school-record 46-12 mark and a No. 1 ranking in the final JUCO national regular-season poll. In his first season at PRCC, Artigues led the Wildcats

to 42 wins and a berth in the JUCO World Series in Mil-lington, Tenn. PRCC finished the year as the South Division Conference Champions, Region XXIII Champions and Central District Champions with Artigues earning Region XXIII and Central District Coach of the Year honors. Before returning to Pearl River In 2001, where he was a two-year letter winner and was a first team All-State and All-Region selection, Artigues spent three seasons at Bossier Parish Community College and posted a 107-57 record. In his final season at BPCC, Artigues led the Cavaliers to a school-record 46 wins and a No. 8 ranking in the final NJCAA poll. Artigues began his coaching career in 1992-93 as an assistant at Spring Hill College where he worked with the team’s hitters and infielders. He served as Dean of Students and head baseball coach at St. Louis Catholic High School in Lake Charles, La., where he led the Saints to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 1996. Artigues moved to Hammond in 1996 and served as athletic director and head baseball coach at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, leading the Falcons to the 1997 state playoffs. Artigues then moved on to the college ranks accept-ing a job at UNO where he was a volunteer assistant coach in 1998 under Tom Schwaner. As a player, Artigues spent two seasons at PRCC where he was an All-State and All-Region selection. He then went on to play two seasons at Belhaven College where he was an All-Conference selection as a second baseman. Artigues graduated from Belhaven in 1992 with a B.S. in Business Administration and earned a Master’s Degree in Sport Coaching from the United States Sports Academy in 1993. He holds the highest single-season on-base percent-age (.538) and sixth-highest career batting average (.375) in Belhaven history. Artigues and his wife Rachel are the parents of two sons, Christopher “Champ” (13) and Casey (10).
