The 2010 Auburn University at Montgomery softball team season finished 38-16-1 overall, fourth in the Southern States Athletic Conference and ranked 20th in the final NAIA Coaches’ Poll. Even with the loss of their first senior class, the Lady Senators have a strong incoming class and 15 returning letterwinners for the 2011 season.

“Instead of this being a rebuilding year, we’ve been able to keep moving forward with the girls that have come in,” said head coach Chris Wilcoxson. “We have some great athletes, who are great leaders, and a team with a lot of experience.” The Lady Senators were voted 23rd in the 2011 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll, and that is just the recognition they were looking for. With a tough schedule last season and the one that features 14 Top 25 teams this year, the Lady Senators want to build a certain reputation. “Being ranked within two years of having a team says a lot about our program, because we get out there and play the tough teams,” said Wilcoxson. “People have noticed us in the last two years and they are taking us serious as a program. Also, our conference is really strong and we get respect with that as well.” “We’ve played a tough schedule every year, including a tournament of the top teams in the country every year,” said Wilcoxson. “In order to build a reputation here at AUM we have to do that, we have to play good teams, and

we have got to play against good competi-tion. We could have a better record if we didn’t have such a hard sched-ule, but I think our kids have learned more and become better players because of the strength of the schedule.” With the strength of the schedule and the preseason rankings, the goal is clear this year of what the Lady Sena-tors want to achieve, and that is a conference championship.

“Our goal every year is to win the conference tournament,” said Wilcoxson. “Last year we finished the regular season tied, and then we lost due to a tie breaker. It was heart breaking, but I think it made the girls realize how much one game can affect the season as a whole.” With 15 letterwinners returning, AUM looks to its experi-enced players as leaders, and at the forefront is junior first-team All-American Brandi Richards, who holds nearly every pitching record in school history and posseses strong leader-ship on and off the field. The Lady Senators also return senior

Infield The Lady Senators have 10 infielders that will possibly see playing time this season, with first base providing the most stability across the infield. “First base will be a position that has strength with the return of Whitney Wyatt and Taylor Saint. With those two players, we have power hitters and great defenders. We are fortunately strong in that position but will have to build in that position in the future.” Wyatt will enter the season as the projected starter but will be in the line up nearly every game because of her power bat. “Whitney is a power hitter and will be playing first base,” said Wilcoxson. “She has led our team for two seasons at the plate, so I’m really looking forward to her excelling, especially in the offensive aspect of the game. She averages about 12 home runs a season and hits about .350. I would really like to see her step up this season and be a leader at the plate and in the field.” Also looking for some playing time at the first base position will be senior Taylor Saint. “She is more defensive than Whitney, and she will block more at first,” said Wilcoxson. “She is a very athletic young lady that has a lot of range and is very agile. She really does a great job of playing defense at first base.” Second base will be a collaborative effort between juniors Kacie Ryal, Danielle Kirkpatrick and Carol Ann McIntyre. “Kacie Ryal is going to make the adjustment from short-stop to second, and I really feel like she will excel there,” said Wilcoxson. “She is tall and can cover at first for the short game. Her hitting really came around this fall, and I’m excited to see what she can bring to the plate this season. I’m really looking for her to be an everyday player and a leader on the infield.” “Carol Ann will play first or second base,” said Wilcoxson. “She really helped out this fall. She is a lefty hitter, which adds another dimension to our line up, and could really be a force in conference at the plate.” Even with a new starter at second base, Wilcoxson is still excited about the right side of the infield. “I feel the right side of the infield is our strongest, because the experience and chemistry of the kids having been here for two years,” said Wilcoxson. “I feel that we are confident in our short game and pressure situation on the right side of the infield.” Shortstop will also have several faces, including Kirkpatrick, Burt and possibly Ryal, but the front-runner will be freshman Jyssica Pepper. “Jyssica has worked really hard this fall with her range, her

technique and her all around game,” Wilcoxson said. “By the end of the fall season, she was covering second base, throw-ing people out on the run, and she is acting like an experi-enced ball player. She really tried to take everything in that we taught her.” Third base will have split time between freshmen Cheyenna Kawala, Burt and sophomore Kendall Thomas. “Right now, Cheyenna and Taylor will be pushing for playing time at third base,” Wilcoxson said. “Chey is a very hard-work-ing kid, has good talent and is a strong kid who has worked on her game this fall. She has really adjusted to the quickness of the game and our style of play. Taylor is a lot like Danielle (Kirkpatrick). She is a very good athlete and can play multiple positions.” “Kendall is coming off a redshirt year, and the biggest thing is getting her back healthy and getting her back into the swing of things,” said Wilcoxson. “She has a great work ethic and is a force on the infield. She has really high standards for herself and really wants to help this team move forward.” Behind the plate, Kirkpatrick and senior Ashton Nelson will battle for the starting spot. However, expect each to see significant playing time at the position. “Danielle and Ashton are our two catchers; both are equally talent, but bring different aspects to the game and are each unique in their styles,” Wilcoxson said. “They both have chemistry with all the pitchers, which is a key factor, and are team leaders.” “Danielle has played many different positions for us, espe-cially when people have been hurt,” said Wilcoxson. “She is always willing to do whatever it takes to play and has a great attitude. She’s a great catcher, and she is going to really excel this year being a junior. I’m looking forward to what she can bring to the table, and I’m very happy to have kids like her in my program.” “Ashton is coming off a redshirt year and will help us from a leadership role. I think she has adjusted and matured as a player with the year off. I am really hoping for big things and that she will step up with our freshman pitcher.”

Outfield The outfield has six returning letterwinners that will bring experience, as well as versatility. Halverson, who is the Lady Senators’ lead-off hitter, also leads in the outfield as a three-year starter and is able to play either right or left field. Juniors Megan Rogers and Joanna Reynolds each excel at the plate and have strong arms. Rogers really helps in the batting order in front of the power hitters and being smart and quick on the basepaths. Reynolds makes good contact, which can put pressure on the defense. Sophomore Rachel Stuart rounds out the outfield with her hard work ethic and great footwork. She provides AUM with speed in right field and adds depth at the position. “Outfield should be the strongest position for us this

season,” Wilcoxson said. “We have five or six girls returning, half of them are lead-off hitters, and the other half are power hitters. We pride ourselves with our outfield within the con-ference, from an athletic standpoint, speed-wise, coverage and hitting-wise. We are strong there, and we have a lot of options.”

Pitching Richards, who is the first All-American at AUM in the softball program and was named the pitcher of the year in the South-ern States Athletic Conference, will be the top option in the circle for AUM this season. “Brandi is a phenom-enal pitcher and phenomenal athlete. She can play outfield, can pitch, can hit and can run. She is one of the best softball players I have been able to coach,” said Wilcoxson. “We are really excited about her being healthy this year and being able to see what she can accomplish. She is one of the hardest workers on the team and seems to never be satisfied. She is always pushing herself to do better and improve. You can’t ask for a better kid. She is very humble. We hope that she will be able to continue on the path of great success and continue to push herself.” Sophomore Jessica Perry is a developing pitcher, who looks to become a force on the mound this season. Rounding out the pitching staff is freshman Courtney Baker. Baker will be one of the main sources of innings on the pitching staff and will take on a heavy load this season for AUM. “Courtney has pitched really well this fall,” said Wilcoxson. “She has really pushed herself and has learned a lot mentally as a pitcher. I think she could be a great ball player, and I’m excited to see how she grows into a very special pitcher.”

Designated Hitter Junior Shea Driggers will be the primary designated hitter, but Kawal and Baker, as well as Burt, will see action, depend-ing on the situation. “Shea is our returning designated hitter and has been with us the last two seasons,” said Wilcoxson. “We are really look-ing for her to step up at the plate, especially with the potential and power she posses. She can really be a force to be reck-oned this year in the conference and use her experience to her advantage to hit the ball hard.”

Chris Wilcoxson enters her third year as the head coach of the Auburn University at Montgomery softball program, having built the program from the groud up. In her first season at the helm, Wilcoxson helped the Lady Senators to a 31-22-1 overall record, including a 19-12-1 mark in the Southern States Athletic Conference and a fourth-place finish in the league. Last season, the Lady Senators improved to 38-16-1, ending the season ranked 20th in the nation. In Wilcoxson’s coaching career at the college and prep level, she holds an overall record of 280-151-2. She holds a collegiate record of 155-116-2, having won more than 30 games in four straight seasons. Prior to AUM, Wilcoxson had a three-year stint at Reinhardt College in Waleska, Ga., where she launched the Eagles’ softball program in 2005. At Reinhardt, she compiled an 84-80 overall record, including a 55-31 record in conference games. In only her second year at the helm of the Reinhardt program, Wilcoxson was named the 2006 Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Coach of the Year follow-ing her team’s third-place finish in the SSAC regular season and runner-up finish at the conference tournament. The Eagles were ranked No. 21 in the final NAIA poll that year and ended with a third-place finish at the Region XIII tournament. During her collegiate career, the Loxley, Ala., native has coached 24 All-SSAC play-ers, eight SSAC All-Freshman team members and three All-Region XIII players. Four All-Americans have benefited from her tutelage, including two-time All-American pitcher and two-time SSAC Pitcher of the Year Brandi Richards. Wilcoxson has also instructed 16 SSAC All-Academic team members along with five NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Prior to Wilcoxson’s move to Reinhardt, she served as head coach at Palmetto High School in Florida,

where she coached from August 2000 to May 2004. She won two District 15 titles and was selected to coach the Florida West All-Star team twice. Her squad set a school record for victories in 2003 with 30, and her teams ranked in the top five of the state’s 4-A ratings in each year of her leadership. Wilcoxson began her coaching career in 1999 at Eufaula High School, where she established a school record for wins in a season with 29 in 2000 and finished as district runner-up and sub-state finalist. A two-time team captain at Auburn University, Wilcoxson was a three-year starter for the Tigers during the AU program’s first three seasons in existence. She hit the first home run in Tigers’ softball history and was selected to the Southeast-ern Conference All-Academic team twice. Wilcoxson led Auburn in home runs in 1997 and closed her playing career in 1999 by leading the team in at-bats, triples and stolen bases. She currently ranks third in the Auburn record book in career stolen bases and triples. She transferred to Auburn following her freshman year at Huntingdon College, where she played varsity softball and volleyball. A 1994 graduate of Robertsdale High School in Robertsdale, Ala., Wilcoxson was a four-year starter in softball, volleyball and basketball. She was inducted in the RHS Hall of Fame in 2006 as the winner of 12 letter awards in varsity sports. Wilcoxson and her husband, Amon, are the proud parents of three children, Easton, Auburn and Rylee.

Holly Currie returns for her third season with the program as an assistant coach fol-lowing a standout playing career at Auburn University. In her first season with the Lady Senators, Currie helped guide the 2008-09 team to a 31-22-1 overall record and a 19-12-1 record in the SSAC, earning a fourth-place finish in the conference. Currie also coached the Pitcher of the Year Brandi Richards and had the No. 1 pitching staff in the conference. Last season, Currie guided the Lady Senators’ pitching staff to a school-record 38 wins and a team earned run average of 1.92. Currie is a native of Pisgah, Ala., and graduated from Auburn in 2007. She had a sto-ried career with the Tigers and left Auburn as the all-time leader in wins (60), strikeouts (782), appearances (143), innings pitched (644), games started (105) and saves (11). She was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week on two occasions and was the last AU pitcher to hurl a perfect game when she

turned the trick in 2005. She threw a school-record eight no-hitters in her career. Currie was a two-way player for the Tigers and finished her career at the plate listed among the top 10 in 12 categories. She finished with 36 home runs, which is third all-time, and 151 RBI, which is sec-ond. She also hit .317 for her career and had a slugging percentage of .560. Her collegiate honors include being named All-SEC, All-Region and, in 2005, to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Louisville Slugger All-American team. She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2005 and 2006. In 2007, she was named an All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Prior to Auburn, she played for Pisgah High School, where she helped lead them to the Alabama State Championship three straight years and was named State Tournament MVP all three years. She was also named Alabama Player of the Year as a junior and senior, and she won prestigious Miss Softball of Alabama award as a senior. She was named Gatorade Player of the Year for 2003 and was a two time All-American, who set Alabama state records with 159 career wins and 1,730 career strikeouts.Currie also played basketball and was named State Tournament MVP after leading Pisgah to the 2003 title.

On the LeftBrandi Richards has earned All-America honors during each of the past two seasons. Last season, she tossed 10 complete games, finishing with a 13-6 overall record and a 1.14 earned run average. She struck out a team-high 181 batters in just 111 innings.

On the RightDanielle Ryan set a new school record with 16 victories last season for the Lady Senators. Ryan finished the year 16-6 with a 2.70 earned run averaged, while allowing opponents to hit just .222 against her overall.

Community Service

The AUM softball team takes pride in their work ethicon the field, but also in the community. This offseason theLady Senators participated in the Commerce for Canines,Volunteer Day at Brewbaker Elementary, and KaBoomBuild a Playground projects, just to name a few. The second annual Commerce for Canines kicked offwith a dog parade through downtown Montgomery toraise awareness and money for the Montgomery HumaneSociety. Twenty-two dogs from the shelter walked withthe players around downtown in hopes that they would beadopted. Another community service project the team was in-volved in was Volunteer Day at Brewbaker Elementary. OnOct. 22, the AUM softball team and the community-basedorganization integrated students with special needs with the Lady senators to make sandwiches for individuals within thecommunity. The lunches were made and delivered to the Friendship Mission Church, which is a PCA Presbyterian churchand shelter located on the western side of town providing daily worship services, housing the homeless and feeding thehungry. On Saturdays, the church and shelter provide over 90 sack lunches, filled with two sandwiches and plenty ofsnack items. Coaches and players also put forth their efforts with the KaBoom Build a Playground project and the City of Montgom-ery to build a new playground at Oak Park. The girls helped assemble the play equipment, fill the area around theplayground with sand, and worked to make the park a better place to play for the kids.Other projects that the team has been involved in was the MacMillian MagnetSchool Reading Night, the City of Montgomery Dragon Boat Races, the ChampionshipToy Drive and volunteering at the LPGA golf tournament held in Prattville.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYAuburn Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the sur-rounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities.In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of

Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association.

AUM ATHLETICS FACILITIESSince the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University at Montgomery has been known throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness on the field and court of play. Fur-thermore, AUM offers some of the best facilities in the South-east to accommodate that competitive spirit.The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a refinishing of the gym floor as well as the installation of new bleachers that seat 2,760.The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes

with the newly built on-campus softball field, on which the AUM softball team was able to play all home games during the 2010 season. The field is part of the AUM Softball Complex, which will eventually include a press box, concessions stand, locker rooms

Auburn Montgomery Chancellor John G. Veres III is no stranger to AUM, having received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology in 1976 and 1978, and he has worked for over 30 years with the university. Veres has been serving as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006.

“I’m proud to be an AUM graduate and the first graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor” says Veres.

Veres received his Ph. D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology in 1983 and has published extensively on human resources management topics, including over 40 articles in scholarly journals, as well as nine book chapters, two edited volumes, numerous technical reports and a book entitled “The Challenge of Front Line Management: Flattened Organi-zations in the New Economy.” He has consulted in over 80 employment discrimination lawsuits, testifying on assessing adverse impact, selection procedure validity and other issues on equal employment opportunity. He currently serves as special master to Federal District Judge C. Lynwood Smith in the Northern District of Alabama, and has served as the Court’s expert to federal district courts in Arkansas and Georgia. He has long been involved in community affairs.

He currently serves on the boards of directors of the Alabama Technology Foundation, the Alabama World Affairs Council, the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, the Montgomery Area YMCA, the Catholic Housing Authority of Montgomery and the River Region United Way. Veres was also the inaugural recipient of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance;s H. Roe Bartle Presidential Leadership Award, an award presented for based on support of nonprofit managa-ment education.

Veres is married to the former Beth Louise Sullivan. They have three children – Erin, John and Olivia – and two grand-children, Cole and Lena.

Steve Crotz is entering his third year as full-time athletics director at Auburn Montgomery after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. In his current capac-ity, Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to inaugurate a softball program, as well as to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer.

“Under his leadership, private contributions have increased significantly,” said Chancellor John Veres. “As we find ourselves in troubling economic times, his combination of commitment to excellence and finan-cial acumen serve us well.”

Crotz was no stranger to AUM before serving as athletic director. For 12 seasons, Crotz served as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two conference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa-tion National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up finish for the 1999-00 season.

Prior to AUM, Crotz spent five years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball coach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., and in October 2009 was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame.

Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Missouri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the former Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgomery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

Montgomery is at once a friendly southern city of grace and charm and a dynamic leader for economic growth and strength in the Southeast. Historic homes rest in peace-ful repose next to towering modern structures of glass and steel with perfect harmony. Lush city parks boasting world-class sports facilities are nestled just a short hop

from a network of roads, rails and runways that transport people and goods through-out the country. Montgomery really does have something for everyone. As Alabama’s Capital City, Montgomery is the seat of state government and the catalyst for decisions that are far-reaching, not just when the legislature is in session, but throughout the

year. People from throughout the state and even the na-tion come here to meet with lawmakers and present their idea or lobby their position, hoping to influence the direc-tion of progress in the coming years. In addition to its turnkey position in governmental affairs, Montgomery holds a unique position in concerns of military training, technology, defense and education as the location of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Maxwell Air Force Base is the home of Air University, one of the military’s premiere educational facilities. Officers from all branches of the armed forces attend classes here. Gunter is the location of the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG), which provides technical and customer service support as well as acquisition and program management oversight of over 160 Combat Support Information Tech-nology (IT) systems. The ELSG also manages the Air Force standard desktop environment, and serves as the USAF lead for software program management under the aus-pices of the Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative. Montgomery is a city of vast economic diversity, with state government, the military, regional government, wholesale and retail trade, agricultural support and indus-try providing a well-balanced economic environment. The city’s role as a regional trade center is firmly established, serving as a wholesaling and distribution gateway to the Southeast in addition to the 22-county central Alabama

area. In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyun-dai would locate its first United States automobile manu-facturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-square-foot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyundai’s first North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physicians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers and more. Additionally, there are many walk-in clinics that offer gen-eral medicine and private practice physician offices with services ranging from family practice to internal medicine and ophthalmology. Montgomery and surrounding area veterans also are served by the VA Medical Center.

Things to See and Do Montgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activities for people of all ages and interests. The city has

been dubbed the “birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights.” It was the first capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the telegram was sent that started battle in the War Between the States. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the Nation-al Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson

Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. The Rosa Parks Library and Museum provides a glimpse into

this important event that shaped the destiny of a na-tion, along with its Children’s Annex, which provides a background on segregation through an interactive “time machine” exhibit. Visitors also should stop at the Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, de-signed by famed architect Maya Lin. The center, operated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-the-art exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for edu-cational activities and a section dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgomery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from five different continents, including an African elephant ex-hibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Alabama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of information. Children will be especially delighted by the archives’ “Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, costumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattle-

men’s Associa-tion “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cow-boy culture and livestock produc-tion. Shopping is also a popular pastime. Mont-gomery has unique boutiques tucked away into historic districts like Old Cloverdale and the Mulberry District, as well as first-class shopping malls and centers.

Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at EastChase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants. And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim.

Sports and Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Base-ball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 million baseball stadium opened

in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riverfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks and Recreation Depart-ment operates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such activities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fitness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and col-lege baseball games. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The trail is rec-ognized as one of the finest golf experiences anywhere.

The NAIA and Southern States Athletic Conference

The 2010-11 academic year marks the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institu-tions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Inter-collegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State Univer-sity, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its 16 member institu-tions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed na-tional titles, while 22 teams have finished national runners-up. Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Au-burn Montgomery has been a member of the National As-

sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 19 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to of-fer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character develop-ment. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an op-portunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Charac-ter program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsman-ship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.
