The St. Johns Builders Council welcomes you as you tour the homes in
our 2011 St. Johns County Parade of Homes. Over the years, thousands of participants
have visited the many homes that enter in this great event. I hope when you see the

fered.

Recently the St. Johns County Building Services Division has enjoyed a high level of single family home permitting activity. The activity has steadily increased beginning in January with 90 single family permits to 153 in June and 150 in July. This places St. Johns County as the fourth most active jurisdiction in the State, slightly behind Hillsborough, Sumter, and Orange Counties. This is notable given that there are 67 counties and approximately 360 separate jurisdictions. Perhaps even more remarkable, the aforementioned counties currently leading us in permitting are actually decreasing percentage-wise while St. Johns County is increasing. June and July were the best months St. Johns County has experienced since 2007. Most of the new construction is taking place in the northeast region of the county (Nocatee) and in the northwest area (Aberdeen and Durbin). As a community, we are fortunate to be experiencing this level of residential permitting in these very uncertain economic times. It is also important to note that commercial permitting levels remain steady with moderate increases. We continue to improve our online permitting system known as e Building Services. This service provides customers with twenty-four hour access to permits, inspections, and code information. Contractors are able to establish personalized ac-counts with access to their Depository Account balance, inspections and permits. In addition, mechanical, gas, irrigation, electric, and plumbing subcontractors can apply for permits through e Building Services, provided they have established an online permitting account. We also have a full-time Plans Examiner to work with our permitting staff helping expedite per-mitting for walk-in customers and applicants with small projects. Additionally, we have updated our communications system for inspection services, doing more with less in all areas. How-ever, with the current increase in residential permitting we are particularly challenged with maintaining the type of service everyone is accustomed to receiving. As with our Plans Examiner services, all our Inspectors are multi-certified and state-licensed, enabling them to perform inspections in all aspects of construction. This continues to allow us to provide the best plan review and inspection services possible. In closing, two reminders. The First Coast Chapter of the Building Officials Association of Florida (BOAF) will be hosting 14 hours of continuing education on September 23 & 24 at the St. Augustine Agricultural Center. This may satisfy all of the necessary education requirements for Engineers, Architects, Contractors and Code Officials. For additional information please contact St. Johns County Building Services at 904-827-6800. Secondly, we are expecting the new 2010 Florida Build-ing Code to take effect on March 15, 2012. As with all new code cycles, we will do our very best to disseminate information to you in a timely manner regarding changes affecting our industry.
