ince 1958, prospective home buyers andbuilders look forward to the Parade ofHomes, an annual event that allows peopleto tour newly constructed homes, seeing thelatest innovations in home design andamenities.
The crowning jewel of the Parade ofHomes is the American Dream Home which showcasesnumerous amenities in an innovatively designed house.Located in the gated Stonechase community of Pace—thecentral site of the Parade of Homes—this year’s DreamHome has been constructed by Paragon Custom HomeGroup.
Though it is packed with luxurious features, the 2010Dream Home is somewhat more affordable to the averagehomebuyer than those of past Parade of Homes, saysMark Porter of Paragon Custom Home Group.
“We had seen for the last 10 years these Dream Homesbeing built that were pretty much unaffordable for most ofthe public going out there to look at the homes, and wepitched an idea to do a more affordable Dream Home,”says Porter. “We needed to do something that morepeople actually could go in and say, ‘I could buy thishome,’ instead of ‘Maybe someday I could live in a homelike this’.”
The Dream Home boasts 3,365 square feet of livingspace, plus a spacious 630 square foot covered backporch. A two-car garage provides additional space to thefour bedroom three bathroom home, which also includesa bonus room. All the living spaces have wood flooringwith 5 ¼” baseboard and crown molding in living areas, with the exception of the bathrooms, which are tiled inItalian porcelain and decorative shower tiles. Theappliances in the home are modern and stainless steel.
These homey features are not the only thing that makesthe Dream Home special; it also displays some eco-friendly amenities. The Dream Home is a Gulf PowerEarthCents home, which means its design has kept theenvironment in mind, helping to reduce energyconsumption and to save the homeowners’ cost of energybills. Some of the EarthCents features include the state ofthe art energy-efficient building with Owens Corning™EnergyComplete™ system, which addresses the problemof air infiltration in homes.
As always, during the Parade of Homes realtors, builders and other construction industry professionals willbe on hand to answer any questions and provideinformation to prospective home buyers or builders. Thiseducational component of the event can inform peopleabout what to look for and what mistakes to avoid in theprocess of buying or building a home.

Furniture, fabric and accessories aren’t the only things tothink about when decorating.
Lighting makes a big difference in the home. It adds beautyand drama as well as functionality. It can make a small roomlook bigger and a large room more intimate. Done right, it canhave a significant impact — and for far less money than otherdecoration options.
The Layered LookWhen it comes to illuminating a room, lighting pros
recommend thinking in terms of layers. In general, every roomshould have three basic layers of light: general or ambientlighting, task lighting and accent lighting.
Ambient LightingAmbient lighting provides overall lighting for the whole
room. Typical lighting fixtures for this layer include recessedfixtures, pendants, chandeliers and surface-mounted fixtures.
Recessed Fixtures: A basic recessed fixture, typically housing a reflector floodlight, throwslight downward in a cone shape. Placingrecessed fixtures in an evenly spaced gridpattern lets those pools of light overlap andprovide even lighting. In a room with eight-foot ceilings, place the fixtures in a grid fromfour to six feet apart.
Chandeliers: A chandelier that’s too big willoverpower a room. One that’s too small willseem out of proportion. One trick tocalculating a chandelier’s size is to measurethe width of the room in feet. Double thatnumber and you’ll get the diameter of theideal chandelier in inches. For example, aroom that’s 12 feet wide should have achandelier no wider than 24 inches indiameter.
Surface Mounted Fixtures: Surface mountedfixtures can be very functional fluorescenttypes with white diffusing plastic covers ordecorative crystal designs that can addsparkle and drama to foyers and hallways.Like chandeliers, they tend to distribute lightmore broadly than downlights, and are usefulin delivering light to wall surfaces.
Tips and Tricks—The bottom of a hanging fixture should generally be sevenfeet above the floor. If a fixture hangs above a dining table ina room with an eight-foot ceiling, the bottom of the fixtureshould hang about 30 inches above the table.—The minimum chandelier diameter for most dining roomsshould be 20 inches. It should be no greater than the lengthof the table minus 12 inches.—For higher ceiling applications, consider using spotlights toadd more “punch” to objects below.
Task LightingTask lighting focuses on a specific area of the room where
activities like reading, cooking or sewing require additionallight. It can be as simple as a pendant light over a kitchencounter, undercabinet lighting, mirror lighting or a readinglamp by a chair.
Task lighting focuses light on a specific area in which an activity takes place. In a kitchen, for example, undercabinet lighting makes it easier to do foodprep on the counters.

To achieve multiple task lighting levelsthat accommodate simple to moredifficult activities, try using GE Reveal® 3-way bulbs, which provide clean, whitelight at three different levels.
Tips and Tricks—As a general rule, task lighting should beno more than three times as bright as theambient light. —Fluorescents under a kitchen cabinetprovide energy-efficient light for foodpreparation.—For floor lamps next to a reading chair, the base of the lamp shade should be 40to 42 inches off the floor.—Lighting fixtures at least 16 inches long, placed on both sides of a mirror, canwork best for grooming activities.
Accent LightingAccent lighting creates drama in a
room by revealing pleasing architecturalfeatures and highlighting artwork, plantsand other decorative items.
Track lighting and recessed adjustablefixtures are typically used for accentlighting. Downlights over tables andcounters can provide visual interest andhighlight decorative items. For paintingsand other decorative items displayed onwalls, lighting fixtures are usually two tothree feet from the wall (for ceiling heightsof eight to nine feet). Halogen reflectorlamps in various sizes and beam spreadsare popular light source choices.
Tips and Tricks—Accent light should typically cast aboutfive times more light on a target than thegeneral light of the room. It should beaimed carefully to prevent glare orunwanted reflections.—To highlight the texture of wall surfaceslike stone or brick, graze the wall withlight. However, if there are imperfectionsin the wall surface, then place lightingfixtures away from the wall to avoidgrazing light.
Lighting expertsrecommend using threelayers of light to make aroom look its best:ambient, task andaccent lighting.
www.pensacolamagazine.com 97
—Three dimensional objects likesculpture are often better revealed withmore than one light source.
Bulb BasicsNot all light bulbs are the same —
how do you know which bulb is right foryour fixture? Mary Beth Gotti, a lightingexpert with GE Consumer & Industrial, has these tips to help.
Choose the light quality for yourstyle.—Some bulbs, such as GE Reveal®incandescent and halogen bulbs, haveneodymium in the glass. This rare earthelement filters out dull yellow rays, making colors in artwork, wallpaper andfabric really stand out.—Halogen produces bright, crisp whitelight, and is often used by designers.Excellent for task lighting or specialaccent lighting to call attention to afavorite art piece.—Compact fluorescent bulbs use up to75 percent less energy than standardincandescent bulbs, and last up to 10times longer.
Find the right shapeThe right bulb for the fixture means
increased light output and betterfunctionality.—Use general purpose bulbs in table andfloor lamps as well as enclosed ceilingfixtures.—Decorative bulbs should be used inchandeliers, sconces or anywhere thelight source is visible.—Spotlights and floodlights are best fortrack and recessed fixtures.
Carefully chosen and well-placedlighting fixtures will help put your homein the very best light.

When Florida says “The First 72Are On You,” does it make goodsense to us?
Who is vulnerable to the next “bigone” in my neighborhood? Is it my wife,my kids or my family pets? How aboutthat old lady next door who is too weakto drive and without anyone to help herget away from potential flooding?
When a hurricane strikes, it’s notpossible for officials to tend to theneeds of the 30,000 potentiallyvulnerable households in EscambiaCounty. There isn’t enough emergencysupport to go around—especially whensome of the volunteers are in the samestraits as everyone else.
In a way, it does seem to makesense that we should take responsibilityand plan to “take care of our own” for
at least the first 72 hours after thestorm hits, regardless of whether weevacuate to a safe shelter or decide wecan stay home safely. It may take thatlong for the county and the state tomobilize support for the communities. After all, it’s a big undertaking.
We all may remember Ivan in 2004,when the storm surge tore out a lot ofhomes along the coast, the bayous andeven up the Blackwater River nearMilton. Who would have thought itwould carry the water to such highlevels so far away from the coast? Andthen there were other homes, awayfrom the waterways, that got floodedfrom the torrential rains that came with“Ivan the Terrible.” We learned somelessons, but cooperation got us throughit safely.
In spite of the occasional hurricanes(natural disasters happen everywhere inthe country), we love our sunnyenvironment and the quality of lifeavailable for us. Still, we have to beprepared, especially during hurricaneseason. What should we think of beforea storm threatens our neighborhood’ssafety?
Schedule a family discussion afterdinner some evening. Or, considerinviting some close neighbors or friendsfor coffee or cake to get some sensibleideas of what others would do or whatthey are concerned about.
This is the time to think about anddiscuss your homes, your families, clearcommunications, transportation, theneighborhood, and basically getting

SELECTING TOMATO VARIETIESWith store-bought tomatoes nearly

RIPENING TIME.If you’re buying seeds to start your
own plants, read catalog descriptionscarefully to discover “days tomaturity.” This indicatesapproximately how soon you canexpect ripe fruit once you’vetransplanted seedlings to the garden.Plants sold at garden centers areoften labeled “early,” “midseason,” or“late” to indicate when the varietyshould start ripening.
DETERMINATE VS.INDETERMINATE.
Determinate plants stop growingonce the flower buds emerge.Because of their more restrained size, many determinate varieties need nostaking or caging, but providingsupport can improve the quality ofthe fruit. All the fruit ripens within arelatively short period of time —usually about a week to 10 days. Thiscan be a boon if you’re canning, butfor the gardener who prefers to havea fewer number of tomatoes over alonger period of time, indeterminatevarieties are a better choice. Thevines continue to grow and set fruitthroughout the season and won’t quituntil the weather turns too hot or toocold to sustain fruiting and growth. HOW YOU WILL USE THE FRUIT.
When selecting a tomato variety, keep in mind what you plan to dowith the fruits. There are varietiessuited for just about every purpose —eating fresh, making tomato paste, canning, drying — even for groominginto a county fair prizewinner.
SEEDS OR TRANSPLANTS.The easiest way to get your tomato
patch started is to purchase youngplants, also called transplants orstarts. You can pick up plants atgarden centers or order them throughcatalogs or the Internet.
That said, starting your own seedgives you an almost endless list ofvarieties to choose from, allowing youto get just the type that will suit yourgrowing conditions and tastes.Starting seeds gives you a chance toexercise your green thumb earlier inthe season, and nurturing plants fromseed to harvest is a rewarding

experience. Plant seeds six to eight weeks
before the last frost date for yourregion, and place them underfluorescent lights. Contact a nearbyExtension Service office or your localweather service to find out your lastspring frost date.
DISEASE RESISTANCE.By planting tomato varieties with
built-in resistance to diseases, youcan have a bit more control over yourgarden’s success.
For instance, many tomatovarieties are resistant to soil-bornediseases such as Verticillium,Fusarium wilts and nematodes. Mostseed catalogs indicate resistance tothese diseases by putting F(Fusarium), V (Verticillium), N(nematodes) after the variety name. You’ll also see varieties withresistance to viruses such as tomatomosaic virus (T), and to Alternaria (A),the fungus that causes early blight.
Talk to a nearby Extension Serviceoffice or to other home gardeners tofind out if any tomato diseases arecommon in your area.

fter a long day of work stretches into the evening, youyearn to rest your aching body and quench your thirstfor both a refreshing beverage and some much-deserved relaxation. You’re probably tempted to stop bya local pub or to grab a six-pack of your favorite brewon your drive home. That icy, bubbly beer of choicetastes like heaven—a refreshingly chilled delight to your
palate, and the perfect accompaniment to anything from a pepperonipizza to a perfectly grilled steak.
If you’re a member of one of Pensacola’s coolest clubs—theEscambia Bay Homebrewers Association—then that trip to the pub orstore won’t be necessary to partake in the hallowed tradition of an ice-cold brew at the end of the day.
The club was formed in the spring of 1985, with the mission to sharethe art of making quality beer and wine with the community, and alsoto engender an appreciation of fine microbrewed and imported beers.
“We’re not the guys laying in the streets at three in the morning. Butwe are the guys that try the various beers and probably the ones thatmake places like Hopjack’s and Brews Brothers successful becausethey’re the ones with so many beers on tap,” says club president PatJohnson.
The membership is currently around 75 people, from all walks of lifewith one thing in common: an interest in brewing. Professionals andminimum wage workers, pilots, schoolteachers, military officers andeveryone in between bond in this group where as Johnson says if youcan make a good brew, it doesn’t matter who you are or what you dofor a living.
“We’re most impressed by what kind of drink you can brew,” hesays.
Johnson started out making wine with help from the Shady Lady, which he says is a tremendous resource for anyone looking to try theirhand at home brewing. The Shady Lady carries supplies for makingbeer, wine, cheese and liqueur, and the staff is happy to offer tips andadvice to those with questions about getting started or just brewing ingeneral.
“Wine is even easier to make than beer, because it doesn’t requireheat,” says Johnson as he shows off a homemade bottle of dry, applewine. “I usually use this to make a hard cider, like Hornsby’s. Just mix inequal parts of the wine with regular apple juice and carbonate it. Oryou could mix it with Sprite and call it a spritzer.”

The possibilities are endless, and Johnson’s personal mancave is highly accommodating of the infinite brewingprospects. In a cozy workshop with a water view nearSander’s Beach, Johnson builds boats, works in his garden, brews and holds club meetings. Huge sacks of bulk yeast forboth him and other club members sit on the floor andshelves wrap around the room, lined with an array of differentbottles—some full, some empty—and other containers ofvarying shapes and sizes. There are small bottles of flavorings, brewing and bottling equipment and sundry other curiositieslike Johnson’s stores of goods he canned himself—everythingfrom chicken to more peculiar things like tamales andblueberry pie.
Homebrewing may seem a daunting task, but once you’veinvested in the initial equipment needed for the process, youcan create your own brews for less than one dollar per bottle.
“If you drink it, you may as well make it,” says Johnson ofthe financial benefits of homebrewing. The process starts with a mixture of barley, water and hopswhich is boiled for about an hour, then quickly cooled. Thenyeast is added to the mixture and it is placed in a fermenter. After a week to 10 days, add sugar to the fermented brew, which the remaining yeast will convert to carbon dioxide inthe bottle, then bottle your creation, carefully “racking” thebeer by siphoning it to remove the sediment created by thefermenting process. After another week or so, you shouldhave beer. Of course, there are variations in ingredients tomake different varieties of beer.
Johnson has stores of some different beers he’s brewed, everything from a light pale ale to a dark, heavy stout with thelook and flavor of coffee. Club members use all natural
ingredients in their concoctions and Johnson says they caneven be made organic if the maker so chooses.
“Beers are a lot like going out to eat—I wouldn’t want toeat a hamburger at every single meal,” says Johnson. “I’mgoing to vary things. I may not be a big stout drinker, butonce in a while, I enjoy a stout.”
You may know the Homebrewers as the folks behindPensacola’s annual Beer Fest at Seville Quarter. Beer Fest is abeer tasting event featuring more than 30 brewers and around300 beers, and it’s the club’s only moneymaking event of theyear. While they do hold a huge variety of annual events inthe area, the club doesn’t pocket as much profit as they giveback to the community.
“The money from Beer Fest that we don’t spend, we givethe vast majority to charities,” says Johnson.
The group also takes good care of its helpers, withorganized pub crawls for Beer Fest volunteers and a party forvendors who make the trip to Pensacola for the festival.
Another event in which the EBHA participates is NationalBig Brew Day, which recently passed on May 1.
“National Big Brew Day is where across the nation, guysget together, and there’s a different recipe for the event eachyear. Everybody will brew that beer on May 1,” says Johnson.“Does it really make any difference? Probably not, but it’sanother excuse to brew beer.”
Members also take part in various beer contests—on boththe local and national levels—throughout the year, sometaking home national awards.
For an organization that seemingly revolves mostly aroundmaking beer, drinking beer and just having a good time, almost all of their events benefit different charities including
Left and far right: The Escambia Bay Homebrewers' brewing systems. Center: The world famous Chuggerboat that a team ofHomebrewers used to win the "Anything That Floats" race at Bamboo Willies on the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk (with the required beer keg in the boat's window).

Sertoma, Big Brothers Big Sisters andthe Independence Fund, which is anorganization that provides wheelchairsto wounded veterans. Most recentlythe Belmont Arts Center has beenadded to the list of beneficiaries withfunds donated as well as beer for theHot Glass Cold Brew functions.Furthermore, they participate in theFriends of the Saenger Haunted GhostTours each year, providing beer andwine and donning costumes to helpwith the tours.
“We do a lot of giving back to thecommunity,” says Johnson. “In fact, Iwould venture to say there’s probablymore of that going on in the club thandrinking.”
