2011 Fiesta Bowl Internship Portfolio

The three-day cross-country drive from one sunny location to another began my six-month journey with the Fiesta Bowl. The following projects were complete during my internship.

OverviewThe Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge is an academic contest for Arizona youth in 5th-8th grades that tests their knowledge of space technology. A preliminary round of competition took place over a three day period, with the top teams from each day advancing to a final round on a later date. NASA astronauts from STS-131 made presentation to the finalists.

StrategyTo make an age appropriate theme for the challenge that was not gender specific. A magazine for the event containing the pictures of the teams, signage and shirts were requested.

ConceptTo use illustrations of planets and space shuttles with lots of movement, and I chose a blue and orange color scheme to allude to being deep in space.

The Aerospace ChronicleThe Aerospace Chronicle is a thirty-two page magazine for participants and visitors at the Aerospace Challenge preliminaries and finals competition. The Chronicle features all 215 participating teams, solar system facts and feature articles on NASA astronauts.

2011 FiesTA Bowl inviTATionAlOverviewThe Fiesta Bowl Invitational is an elegant New Years Eve celebration complete with entertainment, dining and a silent auction that benefits local charities.

StrategyTo create a sophisticated look for the event that subtley incorporated college football into the design.

ConceptThe inspiration for the event was the countdown for the New Year and how it is relevant to a kickoff at the start of a football game. The simple “3..2..1” connected the Invitational to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl game in a subtle and elegant manner.

The Big huddle pregAme pArTyOverviewThe Big Huddle is the ultimate tailgating experience. Football fans from all over the country gather o kick-off their college experience at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona prior to the Insight Bowl.

StrategyTo create a non-team specific feel and fun environment for football fans to enjoy. It is important to keep the collateral team neutral prior to the announcement of the teams. The design must also incorporate team specific elements at the event.

ConceptTo create consistency amongst the two events. A bright blue was used as the main color for the event to remain team neutral. Similar design elements were used in the Insight Bowl collateral pieces.

23rd AnnuAl insighT BowlOverviewThe 23rd Annual Insight Bowl held at Sun Devil Stadium features a Big Ten vs. Big 12 match-up that is televised nationally on ESPN. The Insight Bowl remains one of the best values for a major sporting event.

StrategyThe challenge of the Insight Bowl is to make the growing prestige of the game reflect in the branding and advertising pieces.

ConceptThe tagline “Big Ten, Big 12, Big Game” was created to allude to the best matchup in the bowl’s history. A texture and color scheme were chosen to emulate the checkered pattern in the Insight Bowl logo.
