The Bulldogs will play each of their first three contests in San Diego State’s Viejas Arena and have drawn the host Aztecs in a Friday night season-opening bout for both squads (7:30 p.m. Pacific Time). This is the first-ever meeting between San Diego State and Bryant, who will face off against three team in the span of three days to open the 2011-12 campaign. The Bulldogs will see UC Davis in action Saturday (4:30 p.m. Pacific) and will wrap up tournament play with a noontime contest against Southern Utah Sunday. MEET THE 2011-12 BULLDOGS After a dramatic improvement a season ago — the Bulldogs boasted one of the nation’s largest win turn- arounds (8) and was also one of the statistically most-improved teams in the NCAA in 2010-11 — Bryant returns a strong core of experience to the court for the 2011-12 campaign. The Bulldogs lost five letterwin- ners and two starters from last year’s squad, but return nearly every key component to its offense, most notably in the return of reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Alex Francis and starting point guard Frankie Dobbs. The pair account for more than 40 percent of Bryant’s overall scoring offense in 2010-11, and as a team, Bryant brings back 66.1 percent of its points from a year ago. The biggest loss for the Bulldogs came with the graduation of fifth-year senior and 1,000-point scorer Cecil Gresham, who could beat opponents from long range or in the paint, averaging 14.3 points per game with a team-best 70 made 3-pointers. Still the Black and Gold welcome back plenty of talent to fill the holes, including scorers Vlad Kondratyev, Raphael Jordan and Corey Maynard, as well as highly touted freshman forward Ben Altit. BULLDOGS ENTER FINAL YEAR OF DIVISION I TRANSITIONBryant University enters its fourth and final season of the mandatoryDivision I transition period in 2011-2012, also marking the final year inwhich the Bulldogs will be ineligible for the postseason. The 2011-12campaign is the program’s fourth competing at the DI level and thirdplaying within the Northeast Conference (NEC). Bryant is set tobecome the 12th full member of the NEC upon completion of DivisionI Athletic Certification this summer and is slated to formerly join theNEC for the 2012-13 season. Until the completion of its current four-year transition period, the Bulldogs are not eligible for NCAA or con-ference postseason tournament play, but are eligible for weekly andpostseason NEC honors. Bryant will also be included in the conferencestandings for the third-straight season.

THE SERIESThis will be the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and all three weekend opponents.

SCOUTING THE AZTECSRanked as high as sixth in the nation last season, San Diego State is coming off a magical year in which it wonthe Mountain West Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, all while finishing with a 34-3 overall record under 13-year bench boss Steve Fisher. It will be an entirely new lineup for the Aztecs this season, however, as the program returns without its top four leading scorers from a year ago – a loss which includes thedeparture of leading scorer and rebounder Kawhi Leonard, who was drafted by the Indiana Pacers and tradedto the San Antonio Spurs in the 2011 NBA Draft. Junior Chase Tapley represents the team’s lead offensive returnerat 8.6 points per game after finishing fifth on the squad last year.

BRYANT vs. THE MOUNTAIN WESTThe Bulldogs have faced off against a Mountain West team just once in program history, a bout that came backin the school’s Division II days. Bryant traveled to Las Vegas in November of 2005 to play the Runnin’ Rebels inan exhibition bout Nov. 12. The Bulldogs held their own in the preseason tilt, led by 13 points from Chris Burns, but fellto UNLV, 81-63, in the end.

UP NEXTBryant will finish up Basketball Travelers Classic action with a Saturday contest against the Aggies of UC Davis(4:30 p.m.) and a Sunday tip against the Thunderbirds of Southern Utah (12:00 p.m.) before returning to the EastCoast.

SCOUTING THE AGGIESAfter a 10-20 campaign with a 4-12 mark in the Big West Conference in 2010-11, UC Davis returns a core groupof players who will look to build on last year’s campaign, with senior Eddie Miller (12.5 ppg in 2010-11) leadingthe way. The Aggies will be without their top two scorers and rebounders from a season ago, but bring back lead-ing blocker Mike Kurtz, who put up 26 stuffs and shot better than 40 percent as a rookie in 2010-11. First-yearcoach Jim Les comes to the Aggies after spending nine years as the head coach at his alma mater, BradleyUniversity, where he won more than 150 games and led the Braves to the 2006 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.

BRYANT vs. THE BIG WESTSaturday’s game marks the Bryant basketball program’s first-ever contest against a current member of the BigWest.

SCOUTING THE THUNDERBIRDSWith three of its top five scorers back on the court in 2011-12, Southern Utah hopes to improve on last season’s11-win campaign. Leading the pack is junior Jackson Stevenett, who averaged a team-high 10.1 ppg on the courtlast season. Matt Massey (9.4 ppg) and Ray Jones Jr. (9.2 ppg) round out the squad’s top returning scorers, whilethe Thunderbirds welcoming four newcomers to the court this season. SUU will have to replace some depthdown low after the departure of its top three rebounders. Head coach Roger Reid is eight wins shy of his 200th-career victory, with hopes of eclipsing that mark in his fifth season at the helm of Southern Utah.

BRYANT vs. THE SUMMIT LEAGUESunday’s game marks the Bryant basketball program’s first-ever contest against a current member of the SummitLeague.

OPENING NIGHTSince the inception of the Bryant men’s basketball program in 1963-64, Bulldog teams have done fairly well inseason openers, going 27-21 (.563) all-time in the first game of the year. Bryant took the win in the program’sfirst eight season tips, not suffering an opening-day loss until the 1971-72 season. But the Bulldogs haven’t beenas hot as of late and haven’t taken a victory in the season’s first contest since 2005-06, when they topped Adelphi,

70-62. Bryant is 6-6 in its last 12 season openers and is winless in its first outing in the program’s three-year DivisionI history. The Black and Gold begin the year on the road for the third-straight season, after falling to nearbyProvidence College, 96-53, in the 2009-10 season opener at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and dropping a 71-57 decisionto Cleveland State to open the 2010-11 campaign.

GOING THE DISTANCEThe 2,548 miles — measured as the crow flies — between Bryant University in Smithfield, Rhode Island and San DiegoState University in California are the most the Bulldog men’s basketball program has traveled since joining the ranksof Division I. It is not, however, the farthest the program has ever traveled. In fact, far from it. The trip to San Diegostands as the seventh-longest road trip in program history behind former opponents Chaminade University(Honolulu, 5064 miles), Alaska-Anchorage (3374 mi), Alaska-Fairbanks (3260 mi), Cal State Dominguez Hills(Carson, Calif., 2574 mi), Cal State Bakersfield (2573 mi) and Cal State Los Angeles (2564 mi). However, the trip doesbeat out such former challengers as Saint Martin’s University (Lacey, Wash., 2507 mi), the University of Puget Sound(Tacoma, Wash., 2489 mi) and UNLV (2349 mi).

Prior to arriving in San Diego, the Bulldogs logged the most Division I miles on a 1,028-mile trip to the University ofIowa in 2008-09. Bryant will also take on the University of Arizona later this season (Dec. 22) in Tucson, traveling2,251 miles as the crow flies to take on the Wildcats.

COMMON DENOMINATOROutside of the other two tournament teams, the Bulldogs and the Aztecs have one more opponent in common thisseason. Both teams will take on preseason No. 16/16 Arizona in Tucson. San Diego State will travel to The GrandCanyon State on Nov. 23 while Bryant will take on the Wildcats on Dec. 22. Bryant has no common opponents out-side Basketball Travelers Classic play with UC Davis or Southern Utah.

ALEX THE GREATThe Bulldog leader in nearly every statistical category last season as a freshman, Alex Francis returns for his sopho-more season in 2011-12 and brings with him the 14.8 points per game he averaged, a number ranked ninth in theNEC, en route to the program’s first NEC Rookie of the Year accolade. Francis not only led the Bulldogs in points andpoints per game, but also pulled down a team-leading 8.0 rebounds per outing, good for fourth among all conferenceplayers and first among league rookies. Francis also paced the Black and Gold in field goal percentage (.507, eighthin the NEC), field goals made (170) and taken (335), total rebounds (239) and blocks (16), while adding 27 stealsand averaging nearly 31 minutes per game with 23 starts on the year. The now-second-year forward recorded eightdouble-doubles on the year, including two in his first two collegiate outings, but his best outing came February 24against eventual league champ and NCAA tournament-qualifier Long Island on the road. Against the Blackbirds,Francis was nearly unstoppable, dropping in an impressive 43 points — and NEC rookie record — on 74.1 percentshooting (20-of-27) and just a trio of free throws while also pulling down nine rebounds and posting a pair of blocks. On the year, he was named the NEC Rookie of the Week a league-record six times.

LET’S BE FRANKBut the Bulldogs are no one-horse show, and teams that are able to slow Francis down will have to deal with potentscoring options such as junior guard Frankie Dobbs. Dobbs averaged a team-high 36.6 minutes per game on the floor(third in the NEC) in 2010-111 and ranked third on the team with 12.4 points per contest (18th in the league). Dobbs’s160 assists on the year were the second-most in single-season program history and ranked second on the conferencecircuit at 5.33 per game. Accurate from the field (.407 shooting percentage), from the line (.813; eighth in the NEC),and from distance (.388; 10th), Dobbs is arguably Bryant’s most versatile weapon, having also recorded a pair ofdouble-doubles on the year.

BLAME IT ON MY YOUTHOnce again, the Bulldogs will field one of the youngest lineups in the nation in 2011-12. With no seniors on the roster,Bryant brings on three players with no collegiate experience and will boast just 17 years of returning experiencewhen the team hits the court for Friday’s opener. The Black and Gold average only 1.13 years of post-high schoolplaying experience (including junior college and transfer years) per player in 2011-12, the 16th youngest roster inDivision I and the youngest in the Northeast Conference. The Bulldogs will also not play a younger team at any pointin its scheduled 2011-12 slate. The most inexperienced team in the nation? UC Irvine, with 0.71 years of experienceper player.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCKA redshirt, a walk-on, a true rookie and a pair of transfers all join the Bulldog roster in 2011-12. Redshirt freshmanTroy Robinson becomes an active member of the roster after sitting out last season, and he is joined by highly tout-ed recruit Ben Altit, who comes to Smithfield after excelling as a member of the Israeli Junior National Team andclub team Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Altit averaged 20 points and 10 boards per game as a consistent starter for Maccabi, lead-

MAYNARD COMPETES IN WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMESSophomore guard Corey Maynard didn’t get to spent too much of his summer in hisnative Australia. Instead, he spent part of his break playing basketball in Shenzhen,China, competing in the 2011 World University Games for Team Australia. Maynardappeared in all seven games, earning starts in three of them while averaging betterthan 20 minutes per game of floor time. The shooter led the team with 14 assists onthe tournament and finished second on the squad on the boards, averaging 4.4rebounds per outing. Maynard put up 7.3 points per game and shot at a 41.9 percentclip from the floor. Maynard also went 7-for-18 (.389) from 3-point land and 8-of-10(.800) from the free throw line while picking up five steals as Team Australia finished15th overall with a 3-4 record. The Aussies earned wins over Hong Kong (103-51),Canada (63-61) and Mexico (71-68) while suffering losses to eventual championSerbia (72-67), Turkey (82-74), the Czech Republic (78-69) and an overtime defeat atthe hands of Israel (88-83).

BULLDOGS TAKE ON TOUGH SLATE AGAIN IN 2011-2012For the fourth-straight season at the Division I level, O’Shea and the Bulldogs will takeon another challenging schedule in 2011-12, one that includes such powerhouses asthe University of Arizona, San Diego State, Notre Dame, Boston College andProvidence. Bryant will host 11 home games and will open the season at the BasketballTrevelers Classic in San Diego, Calif. hosted by San Diego State University.

DOBB-LE YOUR PLEASURELast season, Tim O’Shea and the Bulldogs got Frankie. This season, Bryant gets Happy. The older, wiser, experienced version of his athletic and talented son, it was Happywho made junior starting point guard Frankie Dobbs what he is today — literally. Andin 2011-12, the Dobbs factor has doubled, as Happy Dobbs, Frankie’s father, joins theBulldog coaching staff to help teach the rest of the team a bit of what he knows. A for-mer collegiate head coach at Brown (1991-99) and Oberlin (2002-06) and formerassistant at Boston College, Cleveland State and Dartmouth, Happy Dobbs was a four-year starting point guard at Villanova from 1980-84, leading his team to four-straightNCAA tournament appearances.

WHERE IN THE WORLD?The Bulldogs change up their look again this season, most notably in the orgins oftheir personnel. Despite the school’s home in Smithfield, R.I., Bryant boasts not a sin-gle player who can be called “homegrown talent.” Surprisingly, with no one on the 15-man roster hailing from the Ocean State, there is just one Bulldog — Troy Robinson ofRoslindale, Mass. — who even call the New England region home. All-in-all, theBulldog roster is spread across 10 different states and four countries, touching every

corner of the globe.Maryland leads the way as the only state with multiple constituents (Jordan, Smith).Nine additional players all come from different states, some farther — Hawaii

(Matthews) and Minesota (Starks)— than others , Massachusetts(Robinson), New Jersey(Calandrillo), Pennsylvania(Harris), Ohio (Dobbs), Vermont(O’Shea), New York (Francis) andVirginia (Herzing).

Bryant also lists a quartet of interna-tional players on the 2010-11 roster, coming from three different edges ofthe map. Freshman Ben Altit comesto Smithfield all the way fromHerzeliya, Israel to join the Bulldogranks. He is joined by Russian-bornjunior Vladyslav Kondratyev, wholeft Russia at a young age and nowmakes his home in Nikolayev,Ukraine. A pair of Australian sopho-mores in Claybrin McMath(Adelaide, Australia) and CoreyMaynard (Adelaide, Australia)bring an entirely different culture tothe Bulldog sidelines, making thegroup as diverse as ever.

HEAD COACH TIM O’SHEATim O’Shea (Boston College ’84)begins his fourth season at the helmof the Bryant University men’s bas-ketball program and his 11th year asa head coach in 2011-12. O’Shea ush-ered in a new era for Bryant basket-ball in 2008-09, guiding the teaminto Division I competition for thefirst time and leading the Bulldogs toan 8-21 record. Injuries and stiff competition devastated the 2009-10 Bulldogs, whofinished the season 1-29, but the Black and Gold bounced back in impressive fashionlast season, going 9-21 overall while earning seven conference wins. Before arriving inSmithfield, O’Shea was previously the head coach at Ohio University for eight seasons. He was also an assistant coach at the University of Rhode Island (1988-1997) andBoston College (1997-2001), his alma mater. O’Shea is approaching his 150th-careervictory as a head coach.

FRANCIS’S BIG NIGHTNow-sophomore forward Alex Francis had one of the most impressive performancesin program history February 24, 2011. The Harlem native dropped a career-high 43points on top-seeded Long Island University on the road, marking the most pointsscored by any player in the Northeast Conference on the 2010-11 season. But that’snot all.

Francis scored more than half of the Bulldogs’ points that night, even as the team tiedthe program’s Division I record for points in a game (85). The 43-point output cameon 20-of-27 shooting from the field and came against the top team in the conference,an LIU squad that was at the time ranked No. 18 in the nation in the Mid-Major Top-25 poll. It also came with the help of just a trio of free throws (3-for-4). But that’s notall, either.

The first-year forward’s career performance was the third-highest individual scoringeffort in school history and the most points scored in a single game in the program’sDivision I history. His 20 made field goals rank second all-time in that category andare also tops since the Bulldogs joined Division I. Keep reading.

Moving out to a conference perspective, Francis set a new rookie record for pointsscored in a Northeast Conference matchup, is tied for ninth on the all-time NEC sin-gle-game charts and set a new all-time league mark with his 20 made field goals. His43 points bested the previous scoring mark of the season (38 by Quinnipiac’s James

Johnson vs. Robert Morris on Jan. 27) and are themost points scored since LIU’s Antawn Dobie set thecurrent NEC record with 53 points against St. Francis(NY) back on Feb. 22, 2003.

Francis also made waves on the national scene withhis outpouring of points. The 6-foot-6 forward record-ed the highest single-game output of any freshman inDivision I on the entire 2010-11 season, His 43 pointsalso tied him for sixth-most in a game by any DI play-er, and his 20 field goals ended up good for tops inthe country. Historically, Francis’s 43 points are themost recorded by a freshman since Michael Beasleyscored 44 against Baylor back in 2008. Also, sinceFrancis didn’t get the start in the game, his record-set-ting night also tied as the second-most points scoredoff the bench in Division I in the past 15 seasons.

BUZZING INThe Bulldogs were one of the most exciting late-gameteams in Division I in 2010-11, making last seasonanything but boring. Bryant won a trio of games onbuzzerbeaters and earned another two victories inthe final five seconds. Frankie Dobbs, Alex Francisand Raphael Jordan all recorded buzzerbeating,game-winning baskets in 2010-11, and the teamhopes to keep the clutch shots coming this season. Those three buzzerbeater wins mark the only suchvictories in the program’s three-year Division I histo-ry, but since joining the DI ranks prior to the 2008-09season, Bryant has recorded seven wins in the finalfive seconds of a contest.

ALMA MATTERSBryant will play the alma mater of two of its coachesduring the 2011-12 season. Head coach Tim O’Sheaand assistant coach Dwayne Pina are both BostonCollege graduates, while O’Shea and assistant coachHappy Dobbs also coached at Conte Forum. O’Shea, who donned the Maroon and Gold from 1980-84,helped the Eagles to two Big East regular-season titlesand four postseason tournaments, including a pair ofruns to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and one to the EliteEight. Pina, who played for O’Shea at BC from 1997-2000, earned Defensive MVP and Top Playmakerawards in his time with the Eagles, starting in 38games and appearing in 78 as a guard. The Bulldogsplay the Eagles on Dec. 18 at 1:00 p.m. Bryant willalso play Dartmouth (Nov. 19. 7 p.m.) and Brown(Jan. 23, 7 p.m.), both programs where Dobbs spenttime on the bench, as well as Yale (Dec. 7, 7:30 p.m.),where O’Shea also made a coaching stop.

FAMOUS FATHERSBryant juniors Frankie Dobbs and DanielCalandrillo both have close family ties to the collegebasketball world. Dobbs grew up around the colle-giate game, particularly the college game in RhodeIsland, where his father, Frank “Happy” Dobbs, now aBulldog assistant coach, served as the BrownUniversity head men’s basketball coach from 1991-1999. Dobbs came to Brown after assistant coachingstints at Dartmouth and Boston College and a suc-cessful career as a four-year starting guard atVillanova from 1980-84, after which he was draftedby the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers. Calandrillo alsocomes from a line of BIG EAST stardom. His father, also Dan Calandrillo, scored 1,985 points for Seton
