One of my favorite companies, Patagonia, has a T-shirt with the slogan “Live Simply”. That slogan has been bouncing around inside of my head for a few months now because I think it cap-tures my thinking on lot of issues.

I’ve long felt that we’ve all been living be-yond our means. Economically, I think the on-going financial crisis has demonstrated all too clearly that spending more than we make, taking on home mortgages higher than we can repay, and the shenanigans by many of our financial institutions, just isn’t sustainable. But it goes further than this. Environmentally we’ve been living beyond our means as well: the amount of clean air, clean water, and clean food on earth available to future generations grows less each year.

In today’s NY Times, there’s a report that cites studies estimat-ing that 1/6 of mercury falling on North American lakes is from Asia. Incinerators in Asia burn trash and the toxic fumes get

carried through the atmosphere across the Pacific. The reality is that our actions have an effect on the entire planet and we’re not insulated from the actions of others. We’re all connected, like it or not.

Which brings me back to the slogan of Live Simply. In many ways, I think that the current

economic crisis, while incredibly painful, has been the shock needed for many people to shift to simpler lifestyles. It was only a year or two ago that the thought of weaning people off their SUV’s or convincing people in the United States to save more of

their paycheck was considered impossible. But change is here. The savings rate in the US has veered sharply from negative to positive. Conspicuous consumption is out and frugal is in.

To me Live Simply means a lot of things: driving less, biking more, consuming less, recycling more, spending less time in malls, more time in the outdoors, less time stuck in traffic, and more time with family. Living Simply also means enjoying the journey rather than surviving the rat race.

A few months ago, some of us from the office were heading across town to a Vietnamese place for dinner. Now at that time of the evening I would normally drive but on this night, we decided to all head there by bike. Our route leader took us through all these small back alleys that I’d never been through.

At one point, we stopped to pump up our tires and we hap-pened to be right in front of a hand-made chocolate shop opened by a former co-worker. Two rounds of absolutely heav-enly chocolate-covered cherries later, we continued on our way. We arrived at dinner with a sheen of drizzle and sweat, but exhilarated with the journey.

Bikes are a big part of a cleaner, healthier, simpler lifestyle. And it’s great to see so many more people joining us for the ride.

Dahon Folding System (DFS) Technology

All Dahon compact bikes follow the same 3-step folding process:

Step 1: Fold the handlepost down

Step 2: Lower the seatpost into the frame

Step 3: Fold the frame in half

LockJaw Hinge Technology

The perfect hinge is strong, light, and virtually invisible. With the LockJaw, we’re pretty darn close. Bikes equipped with the LockJaw hinge look just like regular bikes – you have to get up close and look really hard to see the hinge. The LockJaw operates with a 6 mm

Allen tool: a half turn opens the hinge; a half turn locks it securely. With the LockJaw you get the convenience of a folding bike in a package that looks just like a standard bike.

NoLift Design

Dahon’s NoLift design allows a bike to be folded without ever having to lift it off the ground. Bikes with the NoLift design fold very quickly and easily.

Magnetix Technology

Patented Magnetix technology is a simple yet ingenious system that uses magnets to hold a folded Dahon neatly together.

Sound familiar? If it does, it’s because the DFS technology we developed over two decades ago is now used by over 98% of all folding bicycles on the market. But while others have followed, we’ve continued to refine our technology and lead the way in ease of use.

V-Clamp Technology

V-Clamp technology is the strongest, simplest folding technology that we’ve ever developed and it’s found on our higher-end frames. A solid stainless steel plate maximizes surface area to securely clamp the hinge in the closed position. Stainless steel hardware and brass bushings provide outstanding durability.

ViseGrip

ViseGrip latching mechanisms are very, very strong. The patented design also makes them marvelously easy to operate. The latch is a beautifully smooth shape that fits the hand perfectly. The hinge includes a stainless steel hinge pin and brass bushings between moving parts.

Radius V Handlepost

Handleposts are very long levers that exert a lot of force on bearings and tubes. If they are not well designed or properly manufactured, they can flex alarmingly. The Radius V features patented Fusion technology that integrates frame, fork, and handlepost into one stiff, strong unit. V-Clamp technology utilizes a stainless steel plate to clamp the entire assembly securely.

Turtleneck Seatpost Collar

The Turtleneck seatpost collar is an elegantly-designed, functional piece of bike gear. The extra long lever applies more tightening force with less effort. The brass bushing makes it more durable. Stainless steel bolts are rust proof. And, a small 2.5 mm lock bolt even locks the collar securely in place.

Dahon Andros Stem

The revolutionary Andros Stem features 2D adjustment, up and down, forwards and backwards, with a single quick-release lever. BioLogic II Frame Geometry

Small wheel folding bikes have a reputation for “twitchy” handling – but “twitchy” handling is more the result of poor frame geometry than small wheel size. BioLogic II frame geometry inspires confidence with its stable handling and is the result of almost 25 years of refinement by the product team at Dahon.

GroundFloor Frame Design

Traditional bike frames with high top tubes can be intimidating to new cyclists or riders with injuries. Protecting your modesty if you’re wearing a dress (or kilt) can also be problematic. Dahon GroundFloor frame designs feature a very low step-over height so getting on and off a bike has never been easier.

UpRide Frame Geometry

Riding a bike hunched over and stretched out is fine if you need to go fast. But that’s not what you want when you just want to head down the street for a coffee. Enter UpRide frame geometry, which puts your body in a naturally comfortable upright position, with your head high, neck and shoulders relaxed, and your legs optimally positioned to use gravity to push down on the pedals. Kore T-beam Saddle

Kore saddles with T-beam technology feature two unique advantages over traditional rail saddles: best in class strength to weight ratio and 7 cm of fore/aft adjustment. T-beam saddles are as light as a Titanium rail saddle but are strong enough to be used by some of the best downhill and freeride racers in competition. And because T-beam saddles offer a lot more fore/aft adjustment, riders can dial in their preferred riding position – laid back for easy cruising, or tri-style for big ring mashing.

BioLogic Arx Grips

BioLogic Arx grips support for the palm of your hand and position your wrists to minimize numbness during long rides. The ergonomic support lets you relax your hands more during rides, resulting in less fatigue and more control when you need it. The grips lock into position on the handlebars and a triple density design puts a soft compund rubber just where you need it.

AutoLok Technology

AutoLok technology improves safety. Folding hinges with AutoLok technology automatically lock shut when the lever is closed. Simple and safe.

Fusion Technology

Traditional bike technology wasn’t designed for the long handleposts found on folding bicycles. Lots of folding bikes have flexy handleposts that aren’t fun to ride. That’s why Dahon developed patented Fusion technology which fuses the frame, fork, and handlepost into a single, strong structure.

GreaseFlow Technology

Switzerland, the land of precision time pieces, is a place where quality and durability are valued above all else. Fitting then that this latest technology was proposed by our Swiss Product Team member. GreaseFlow technology makes lubing and caring for a Dahon easier than ever. It incorporates a grease port in the hinge and grooved pivot pins. Using a standard grease gun, grease can be injected into the hinge pivot and streamed through the interior grooves. Contaminants and water are purged so the hinge action stays silky smooth.

Boost Technology

Boost Technology is a powerful electric propulsion system that was designed by Dahon and Japanese engineers over a period of two years. The Boost system adds a “boost” of power with every stroke of the pedals, measuring the amount of force that the rider puts in and then multiplying it. Three custom-tuned power curves or “boost modes” are available. Advanced electronics and lithium ion battery technology make the Boost one of the lightest electric systems on the market. A fully equipped Dahon bicycle with the Boost system weighs as little as 20 kg. Best of all, Boost technology allows a bicycle to function just like a normal bicycle: turn the system off and the bike rides and handles like a normal bicycle.

BioLogic FreeDrive

The BioLogic FreeDrive encloses the bicycle chain to keep the rider’s clothing protected from grease and dirty spray. The FreeDrive’s ingenious design moves with the chain so it is friction free, unlike with some other chain protection methods. It also reduces chain vibration and noise. With a FreeDrive, you can say goodbye to bulky chainguards.

Dahon Neos Derailleurs

Traditional rear derailleurs weren’t designed for small wheels: long cages leave little ground clearance and large parallelograms protrude awkwardly from the frame, vulnerable to damage. To solve these problems, we developed the Neos line of derailleurs. The revolutionary low-profile design mounts directly to the chain stay with the body of the derailleur tucked underneath, protected from damage. In recent years, Shimano has seen the logic of such low-profile designs and has begun to incorporate it. The Neos’ ultra-short cage delivers crisp, lightning fast shifts, and as an added benefit, doubles the amount of ground clearance. (Note for adjustments: the Neos is a Rapid-Rise derailleur)

The Matrix is an urban bike that will take on anything you throw at it. Drop it down on the nastiest potholed roads and the hydraulically-damped fork and Big Apple tires level everything out. Integrated Phone/GPS ChargerDesigned into the Ios XL is the newly developed BioLogic ReeCharge , a device that will charge iPhones, iPods, GPS units, or just about any small electronic device, through a USB port. The ReeCharge incorporates a Lithium polymer battery that stores power generated by the dynamo hub when the bike is ridden. Proprietary circuitry converts and regulates the intermittent power generated by the dynamo. The battery then outputs a stable current to safely charge electronic devices. With the ReeCharge, cyclists never again need to worry about running out of power.

The Perfect FitSince Dahon developed the original Hon Folder 25 years ago, folding bicycles have allowed users one dimensional adjustment of the handlebars, up and down. With the new, patented Andros stem, riders have an additional dimension of adjustment – forwards and backwards. With the two dimensions of height and reach adjustment, riders can find their optimal riding position on the bike. They can choose an upright position for more comfort or when riding in traffic, or an aero position for a sportier, faster ride. A single quick release adjusts both stem and handlebar position.

Integrated LightingMost bicycles feature bolt on lights that look more like an after thought than a central and important feature of the bicycle. Ios bicycles feature a Valo light that is integrated into the design of the bicycle. The position of the Valo light is similar to the front light of a scooter or motorcycle; it is located centrally, in the middle of the handlebars, and high up for good visibility. Dahon developed the Boost over a two year period with a Japanese technology partner. Sophisticated motor and torque sensors add power in proportion to the force the rider applies to the pedals. A 3×3 gearing system allows for nine different riding modes ensuring the Boost can easily meet the power assist requirements of every rider.

Unlike many electric bicycles, the Boost rides just like a standard bike with the electric drive system turned off.

The system is based around a 250W motor and has a top speed of 25 km/h. The lithium polymer battery is extremely light and does not suffer from any memory effect.

Arx Grips

BioLogic Arx grips support for the palm of your hand and position your wrists to minimize numbness during long rides. The ergonomic support lets you relax your hands more during rides, resulting in less fatigue and more control when you need it. The grips lock into position on the handlebars and a triple density design puts a soft compund rubber just where you need it.

Chime Brake Lever

BioLogic Chime brake levers feature a cleverly integrated bell with a sweet, clear chime. The ergonomically shaped levers mold perfectly to the curvature of your hand for easy modulation. The final touch is a soft Kraton insert in the lever: they improve grip in hot or wet weather, and in cold weather you won’t find your fingers freezing to them.

Never forget your bike pump at home again. The BioLogic PostPump is an ingenious combination of a seatpost and powerful floor pump. Dahon Valo

Valo means “light” in Finnish and we chose this name in honor of our Finnish product designer who conceived this wonderful new product. The Dahon Valo is a handlebar light designed for the Andros stem. It tucks snugly between the dual arms of the stem protected from damage and always angled correctly. The high efficiency LED emits 10 lux of light but uses only 1/4 the energy of a halogen bulb so there’s full brightness even at walking speeds. The SafeStop feature keeps the light working even when you are waiting at a stop light. A must have if you have a bike with an Andros stem and a hub dynamo.

CarryOn Cover

The ingenious CarryOn Cover takes folding bicycles to another level of portability. The CarryOn is a lightweight cover that slips over your bike and let’s you carry the entire package with a comfortable, padded shoulder strap. It’s perfect for those large train stations that require you to bag your bike. When not in use, the CarryOn stuffs into its own saddle bag – always ready, but never in the way. The Body Bag is a long and flat storage bag for a Dahon bicycle. It’s perfect for use in storage lockers, closets, or behind your sofa. It’s suitable for bike rental stores or tour outfits that need to pack bikes quickly and compactly for storage or transit to a ride location. Tour Bag

The Tour Bag is a quality, waterproof bag that connects directly to the Dahon Luggage Truss. It’s made from premium TPU fabric and features welded seams for true waterproofness. It’s big enough for an SLR camera, lunch, and a spare shirt. Because the Tour Bag connects to the frame of the bicycle (as opposed to the handlebars), it doesn’t affect steering. Racks Luggage Truss

Many Dahon bikes feature a luggage socket on the frame head tube. The Dahon Luggage Truss is designed for this socket and features a connection adapter that is compatible with bags and baskets from Dahon as well as such brands such as Rixen & Kaul, Ortlieb, Jack Wolfskin, Agu and many more. The Luggage Truss is extremely stiff and can hold loads up to 10 kg. Because the Luggage Truss mounts directy to the frame, luggage that is connected to the Truss won’t affect your steering. With a clever QR design, bags and baskets take only seconds to mount and unmount - perfect for riding to the supermarket, unclipping your basket, and heading inside for shopping.

Luggage Strap

Believe it or not, we went through about fifteen samples and a year of testing to find our new Luggage Strap. Although they may look the part, cheap straps don’t have enough elasticity or stretch out and no longer function. Our new Luggage Strap has excellent elasticity and rebound and we couldn’t be happier with it.

ArcLite Rack

The ArcLite rack features large gauge aluminum tubing for excellent strength at a low weight. The ArcLite also includes an elastic luggage strap that clips into integrated brackets. Includes a bracket for a light or reflector. Available versions for most 16” and 20” Dahon folding bicycles.

Traveller Rack, Front

Built from large gauge tubular aluminum for strength and stiffness. The design features a very low-center-of-gravity for excellent stability when loaded with panniers. Works with all Dahon non-suspension 20-inch front forks and fits most front panniers. 10 kg (22 lb) load capacity.

The Traveller Rack is the ultimate rack for long-distance excursions. The rack easily accomodates side panniers and a rack top bag. Kinetix Pro Wheels are the lightest and fastest compact wheels in the world. Radius V Comfort Handlepost

For riders who prefer a more upright riding position or who find our standard handlepost to be too much of a stretch forward, the Radius V Comfort Handlepost positions the handlebars closer to the saddle than the standard Radius handlepost. Same solid construction, mount and assembly as the standard Radius V Handlepost. Compatible with all 16” bikes and most 20” bikes with telescoping Radius V handleposts. It’s another way to get just the right fit on a Dahon bike.

Merino Jersey

The Dahon Merino Jersey is perfect for cold winter riding, or hitting the pub after a ride. The Merino jersey is made from 100% superfine New Zealand Merino wool, a natural fiber which wicks sweat (so you stay dry) has antimicrobal properties (so you don’t stink) and mechanical stretch so it fits snugly to your body (so you look good). The Merino Jersey is soft and itchless against the skin. The Merino Jersey features a hidden zip back pocket with an internal iPod pocket.
