NEW YORK CITY ISFrom its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses in New York City: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights.

As Director and Head Coach of Columbia’s entire Cross Country and Track & Field program, Willy Wood can boast a level of achievement that few can approach.

Since Wood, 46, came to Columbia in 1994, he has made the Columbia Cross Country and Track & Field program competitive at the national level. Utilizing the resources of a great university in a city well-suited for track & field and distance running, he and a perennially strong staff have made Columbia a household name in track & field and cross country circles across the nation.

In 15 years under Wood’s leadership, the Columbia men and women’s cross country programs have become one of the Ivy League’s best, and are respected nationwide. Wood and his staff have since set their sights on indoor and outdoor track & field, which have made tremendous strides in recent years. In 2005, the women’s team finished third and second, respectively, in the Ivy League Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Building on that, the 2009 women’s team finished third at the Outdoor Championships, boasting one of the highest point totals in program history. All the while, Columbia’s cross country teams have continued to flourish.

The women’s cross country team has won the Ivy League Heptagonal championship four times in the past decade, and was joined by the men’s team twice, in 2004 and 2009. Representatives of the women’s team competed in six consecutive NCAA Championships from 2000-05, finishing 11th in 2002 and 13th in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Columbia won the 2002 NCAA Northeast Regionals, and finished second from 2003-2005. In 2009, the Lion women also won their 12th consecutive Metropolitan Cross Country Championship; the men have won nine of the last 12 Mets crowns.

The coaching of Wood and his staff has resulted in several individual Ivy League champions in cross country in recent years, and 14 Ivy League titles in track & field in the past three years. There have been more than 55 qualifiers for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in the last seven years, including Sharay Hale ‘12CC, who advanced to the national semifinals of the 400m run and ended the 2009 season as the fastest freshman in the nation in the 400m. Her time of 52.64 at the 2009 NCAA East Regional was a new school record, the fastest time by a member of the class of 2012, and the tenth fastest time in the nation in 2009.

Wood also guided his squad to one of the most exciting wins in Ivy League track & field history. At the 2007 Penn Relays, Columbia’s 4x800m relay team of Jonah Rathbun ‘08CC, Mike Mark ‘10CC, Erison Hurtault ‘07CC and Liam Boylan-Pett ‘08CC won the Championship of America race. It was the first time the Lions had won a title at the Relays since 1938, and it marked the first victory for an Ivy League institution at the prestigious event since 1974.

Wood is credited with the development of some of Columbia’s finest all-time athletes. They include: five-time All-American Caroline Bierbaum ‘06CC, the Honda Award winner as the nation’s leading cross country runner of 2005; NCAA outdoor steeplechase All-American Delilah DiCrescenzo ‘05CC, who made it to the finals of the steeplechase at the US Olympic Trials in 2008; Casey O’Shea ‘96CC, an All-American who competed in the Olympic Trials in the 3000-meter steeplechase; Lisa Stublic, who gained All-American honors in cross country; Caitlin Hickin ‘04CC, a two-time All-American in cross country; and 2004 graduate Steve Sundell. Sundell made All-American in both cross country and the 5000 meters outdoors. The 2003 Heptagonal Ivy League champion, Sundell also took Ivy League championships in the 3000 and 5000 indoors, and 5000 outdoors.

Wood has also added an Olympian to his resume: Erison Hurtault ‘07CC. Hurtault, a two-time All-American and 11-time Ivy League champion, became the first athlete in Ivy League track and field history to win the Ivy League championship in one event — the 400 meters — all four years, both indoor and outdoors. Hurtault had competed successfully in the 400m during 2007-08, but just missed the finals of the Olympic Trials. He competed in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, representing Dominica, a Caribbean nation where both of his parents were born.

Wood joined the Columbia athletics staff in 1994. Prior to his arrival in Morningside Heights, he served as head coach of the University of North Carolina-Asheville’s track & field and cross country programs. He was named the Big South Conference’s Coach of the Year for cross country in 1993, after leading the men’s team from eighth to third, and the women’s team from seventh to second, in each case the team’s best finish.

Prior to Asheville, Wood was head men and women’s track coach at Bethel College in Minnesota, where, in just two years, he produced eight NCAA Division III national qualifiers, two All-Americans, and a seventh-place finish at the 1992 NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Championships.

He served one season as head coach at Kansas Wesleyan University, where he led both the cross country and track & field teams from eighth place to a Kansas College Athletic Conference title, and was chosen the KCAC Coach of the Year in both sports.

Wood earned his master’s in physical education while serving as a graduate assistant coach at Pittsburg (Kansas) State University. Wood earned his undergraduate degree in 1986 from the University of Kansas, where he was All-Big Eight in the 200 meters, the 4x400m relay and the distance medley relay. He attended Taylor University in Indiana for two years, earning NAIA All-America honors twice in the 200-meter dash. He broke 12 Taylor records in events ranging from the 50m to the 500m, as well as several relays. Wood narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympic Trials in 1992. He has run personal bests of 20.9 seconds in the 200m, 10.2 for 100m, and a 46.9 for the 400m.

Wood is the father of two daughters, Taelor and Hanna. They reside in Morningside Heights.


ASSISTANT COACHES

JON CLEMENSAssistant Coach Third SeasonMen’s Distance

During his tenure as a member of head coach Willy Wood’s staff, Jon Clemens has experienced a large amount of success while working with the Columbia track & field and cross country programs. Clemens has recruited some of the best and brightest young runners to Morningside Heights, including the core of the 2009 Ivy League Championship cross country team. Clemens led a men’s cross country squad that, after finishing second in 2008 by just three points, came back to win the Ivy League title in 2009. Three members of the team, Brendan Martin ‘11CC, Kyle Merber ‘12CC and Terence Prial ‘11CC earned All-Ivy League recognition for their performances at the meet.

A dedicated runner himself, Clemens brings a unique background to the coaching staff. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he was a member of the last Navy team to win a Heptagonal team championship in cross country; Clemens won the individual title at that meet in Van Cortlandt Park in 1996. He went on that season to qualify individually for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Tucson, Arizona, finishing 33rd and earning All-America honors. During the 1997 outdoor season, he repeated that feat, winning the Heptagonal Championship title in the 3000m Steeplechase, and finishing tenth at the Outdoor NCAA’s, earning All-America honors once again. In all, Clemens qualified four times for the NCAA’s (in cross country, the indoor 3000m, and twice in the Steeplechase) and was a five-time IC4A All-East athlete. After earning his commission as a naval officer, Clemens continued his training for the prestigious Reebok Enclave in Washington, DC. He qualified four times for the USATF National Championships in the steeplechase. Twice, he represented the US military at the World Military Championships, with a best finish of 45th overall. In addition to his running, Clemens distinguished himself as a Navy pilot and earned the rank of Lieutenant. While flying the SH-60B Seahawk, he completed two deployments and accumulated over 700 hours in the air in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. After serving overseas, Clemens returned to his passion for running and assumed the position of assistant coach at the University of San Diego. During his tenure there, he helped coach a West Coast Conference champion and improved the conference standing for both the men and women’s programs. Relentless in his desire to coach dedicated athletes, he created SOCAL United, a post-collegiate running club. While coaching this thirty-member club, Clemens helped two member-runners qualify for the 2008 US Olympic marathon trials, and two qualify for the USATF national championships.

GAVIN O’NEALAssistant CoachFourth SeasonSprints, Hurdles and Jumps

Gavin O’Neal is entering his fourth season as an assistant track & field coach at Columbia University. The 2009 outdoor season marked one of the best for O’Neal’s sprints, jumps and hurdles corps. O’Neal helped lead the women’s track & field team to a third place finish, and one of the highest team point totals in program history, shattering most of the program´s records along the way. Leading the charge were first-years Sharay Hale ’12CC and Monique Roberts ‘12BC, who both qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in their first season as Lions. After winning her first Ivy League championship in the 400m, Hale ran a blistering 52.64 at the NCAA East Regional Championships to advance to nationals. The time made her the fastest freshman in the nation, a position she would not relinquish.

Hale advanced to the national semifinals and narrowly missed qualifying for the finals by .08 seconds. Roberts, who has re-written the Columbia high jump record books, earned a berth to the NCAA championships by finishing second at the NCAA East Regionals in high jump. She claimed regional runner-up honors by clearing 1.81m (5’11.25”), which ranked her as the number two freshman in the nation. Roberts just missed advancing to the finals of the high jump, but still ended the season ranked 13th in the country, and the number two freshman. Joining Hale and Roberts at the NCAA East Regional were first-year Kyra Caldwell ‘12CC and senior Elisse Douglass ‘09CC. Caldwell qualified for the regional championships in both the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Caldwell broke the school record in the 100m hurdles, on her way to winning the Ivy League championship in the event, becoming the first athlete in Columbia history to claim that title. Douglass won the Ivy League title in the triple jump, setting a new school record in the process, defeating All-American Jeomi Maduka. On the men’s side, O’Neal worked with Stefan Vutescu ’10CC, the 2009 Ivy League champion in both the 60m and 100m dash, and an NCAA Regional qualifier. Under O’Neal’s guidance, Vutescu became the first Columbia sprinter ever to win the indoor 60m dash, and the first Columbia male since 1951 to win the outdoor 100m. In his time with the Lions, O’Neal has coached five indoor school record holders, 10 outdoor record holders, one conference record holder, six Ivy League champions, seven Ivy League runner-ups, 16 All-Ivy League selections, six NCAA regional qualifiers, one regional runner-up, one NCAA National championships qualifier, and 42 athletes on the all-time top five lists in Columbia track & field history. O’Neal joined the staff at Columbia after working as an assistant track & field coach at Williams College. At Williams, he coached the triple, long and high jumpers, and also served as assistant strength and conditioning coach. While coaching the Ephs, O’Neal helped to produce three NCAA indoor qualifiers and seven outdoor NCAA qualifiers, resulting in seven All-Americans. Six school records were broken during his tenure at Williams, and he helped the women’s track & field program to two second place finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, and the men’s team to a fourth place finish outdoors. Prior to his time at Williams, O’Neal spent three seasons at Oberlin College. After spending the 1999-2000 season as the assistant men’s cross country and track & field coach, he was promoted to head men’s cross country and assistant track & field coach, a position he held for two years. O’Neal developed four all-conference and two all-regional athletes in cross country, 13 all-conference track and field honorees, six conference champions and three NCAA qualifiers. O’Neal graduated from Ohio University in 1999 with a B.S. in sports sciences. He was a two-time cross country team captain at Ohio, and earned first-team All-Mid American Conference honors in 1996, when the Bobcats won the MAC team title. He received his master’s in sports administration from Kent State in 2004.

Zach Richard reunited with his former coach when he joined Columbia’s head coach Willy Wood’s coaching staff in August of 2008. Now entering his second season with the Lions, Richards helped guide Megan Lessard ‘09CC to the NCAA National Championships in cross country, along with two Ivy League track & field championship titles, in the indoor mile and the outdoor 1500m. Additionally, seven of his athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional meet in the spring of 2009. Richard is responsible for recruiting the women’s distance class of 2013, of the deepest and most talented first-year classes in the history of the women’s distance program.

A political science major, Richard was captain for both the cross country and track & field teams his senior year, and was a second-team All-Ivy League honoree in the 1000m in 2007. Richard was also a member of the school-record holding indoor 4x800m relay team, a part of the 2005 Ivy League Championship cross country team, and is on seven top five Columbia performance lists. Richards assists Coach Wood with the men and women’s distance and middle distance runners, and is responsible for recruiting women’s distance and middle distance runners. He resides in Morningside Heights, with his wife, Nicole.

Amy Malsbenden joined Willy Wood’s track & field’s coaching staff in the fall of 2009 as an assistant coach and works with Columbia’s throwers. Malsbenden, who graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2009, competed in weight throw, shot put, hammer, and discus in her collegiate career. A three-time America East conference qualifier,

Malsbenden also competed for Springfield College at the NEWMAC conference championships in three events. Graduating with a BS in athletic training, Malsbenden spent two seasons as a student athletic trainer at UNH, and two seasons as an assistant track & field coach at Bow High School.

Patrick Gazzini joined the Columbia track & field coaching staff in the fall of 2009 as an assistant coach, and will focus on the sprints and hurdles group.

Gazzini, who graduated from Villanova, is a former BIG EAST runner-up in the 400m hurdles and an NCAA Regional qualifier in the same event. A native New Yorker, Gazzini was also a New York State champion in the 400m hurdles and a multiple section

and conference champion in his time at Somers High School in Westchester. Gazzini has a BA in biology from Villanova and a master’s degree in health and human performance from McNeese State. He has worked as a rehabilitation technician at Sports Physical Therapy of New York, and as a graduate assistant at McNeese State, where he headed the sprints and hurdles program on an interim basis.

Will Boylan-Pett ‘05CC rejoined former coach Willy Wood in December of 2009, as he became a member of Columbia cross country and track & field’s coaching staff on a full-time basis. Boylan-Pett works with Columbia’s middle distance runners.

A former captain of the men’s cross country and track & field team and four-year varsity letter winner, Boylan-Pett was an integral part of establishing Columbia’s dominance in middle distance events. His name is still prominent in Columbia record books, as he was a part of the Distance Medley Relay team that ran the third-fastest time in school history. He also captained the 2004 men’s cross country team all the way to an Ivy League Championship title, only the second in program history. A four-time scholar-athlete recipient while a Lion, he also served on the Undergraduate Athletic Council in his senior season.

Boylan-Pett, who graduated from Columbia with a degree in political science, attended Villanova University School of Law, where he graduated in 2009 with his J.D. He has also spent time at the School at Columbia University, where he served the head cross country coach of the middle school team in the fall of 2009.

Robert Marchetti joined the Columbia track & field staff in the fall of 2009, and works with Columbia’s pole vaulters. Marchetti, an alumnus of the University of New Mexico, was a WAC conference champion in the high jump in 1993, and has built an impressive coaching resume since his graduation that has included over 15 years of experience on nearly every possible level.

Marchetti got his start on the high school level, but from there, a three-year stint as the head coach at Mercer County Community college led to an assistant position at NCAA Division I Rider University. Marchetti also spent a year at Murray State Univeristy, where he led the field events group to an individual conference champion, six runners up, and two NCAA regional qualifiers. Most recently, Marchetti has spent time as the assistant track & field coach at the Shore Athletic Club of New Jersey.


FACILITIES

ARMORY TRACK AT NEW BALANCE TRACK AND FIELD CENTERBuilt as a training center for the National Guard in 1909, The Armory began hosting track & field meets by the 1920s. Over the next few decades, The Armory became the center for track & field competitions in New York City. The Armory was renovated in 1993, and is a world-class track & field facility.

Located on Fort Washington Avenue, a block west of the 168th Street subway stop, The Armory has a pole vault runway, an eight-lane sprint and hurdle straightaway, two long jump pits, two high jump areas and a throwing area. The arena seats more than 4,000 spectators.

In 2007, The Armory hosted the Indoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships for the first time since 1952. Columbia and the Armory are slated to host the Indoor Ivy League Heptagonal Championships again in 2011.

VAN CORTLANDT PARKLocated just 24 blocks from Columbia’s Baker Athletics

Complex and seven miles from the Morningside Heights

campus, Van Cortlandt Park is New York’s gift to cross

country. One of the nation’s most exacting and renowned

courses with over 20 square miles of trails to run on, it is

home to several of the East’s top running colleges and

has been the site of the NCAA national championships.

Two of the oldest collegiate cross country meets in the

nation — the Heptagonals and the Metropolitans — are

held at Van Cortlandt every year. The NCAA Northeast

Regionals are held at Van Cortlandt in alternating

years.

LAWRENCE A. WIEN STADIUMColumbia’s Lawrence A. Wien (pronounced “ween”) Stadium at Baker Athletics Complex has become known as one of the premier track and field facilities in the East. The stadium attracted more than 60,000 fans as the host of the New York Games from 1989 to 1995, and was the site of the 1989, 1999 and 2005 Heptagonal Championships, and the 2003 Metropolitan Championships. The resurfaced eight-lane Rekortan track provides an outstanding practice and competition site and the stadium holds 17,000 spectators. Columbia’s scoreboard is state-of-the-art and one of the best in the Ivy League.

The stadium’s location on the northern tip of Manhattan, at the scenic confluence of the Harlem and Hudson rivers, is one of the most striking track & field sites in the nation.


Andrea Di Trani joined the Columbia athletic training staff in July 2008 and is the primary athletic trainer for women’s soccer and indoor and outdoor track and field. Di Trani came to Columbia from Arizona State where she worked primarily with the Sun Devils cross country and track and field teams. A 2006 graduate of Marist, Di Trani earned her bachelor’s degree in athletic training, and was a two-time captain of the cross country and track and field teams.

ELIAS LEVANWAYAthletic Trainer • Cross CountryElias Levanway was the newest addition to the Columbia athletic training staff in August, and will work primarily with men’s basketball, cross country and the men and women’s tennis programs. Levanway comes to Morningside Heights from Iona, where he spent the past two seasons as an assistant athletic trainer. A 2004 graduate of Vanguard University of Southern California, Levanway earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training and most recently earned a master’s degree in performance enhancement and injury prevention from California University of Pennsylvania.

JIM GOSSETTAssociate Athletisc Director for Sports Medicine • Head Athletic TrainerJim Gossett is one of the best-known and most highly-honored athletic trainers in the nation. Gossett is in his 30th year at Columbia, his 29th as head athletic trainer. He administers a staff of seven full-time assistants that works with all 29 Columbia teams and oper-ates modern training facilities on the main campus and at Baker Athletics Complex. He has worked with most of Columbia’s teams, but has been particularly identified with football, soccer, fencing, rowing and wrestling. Gossett has worked with several championship squads, including the men and women’s fencing team, which won two NCAA championships while he was associated with them. He worked with men’s soccer and wrestling from 1979 to 1983, when they won a combined seven Ivy League titles and made two trips to the Final Four. As a well-known athletic trainer in the New York Metropolitan area, Gossett was selected recently to serve as a spokesperson for Gatorade, Inc., and the National Athletic Trainers Association. His role is to promote healthy practices in order to prevent heat-related illness during the hot weather months, and to serve as a resource, including on-air interviews, for CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox

television affiliates in the New York area. The New York State Board of Regents reappointed Gossett to the State Committee for Athletic Trainers. His five-year appointment is to the State Board for Professions, which regulates athletic trainers in New York State. On the national scene, Gossett was the head athletic trainer for the United States fencing team in the 1991 World University Games in Sheffield, England, and spent three seasons as trainer of the U.S. National Lightweight Crew. He was athletic trainer for rowing at the 1988 Olympic Sports Festival, and for track & field at the 1987 Festival and Pan American Games. He also spent four summers as athletic trainer for the ABCD/Nike basketball camps. Gossett has been frequently honored for his work. In 2004, he was presented the Dan Libera Service Award for outstanding contribution to the Board of Certification, while in 2003, he was honored by the National Athletic Trainers Association with the Most Outstanding Athletic Trainer Award, for which he was nominated and chosen by his peers, and received the All-American Football Foundation’s Outstanding Athletic Trainer Award. Previously, he had been honored by the New York State Athletic Trainers Association with the Thomas J. Sheehan, Sr. Award, its highest honor, and by the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association (EATA) with the Joseph A. Blankowitsch Award. A former president of the EATA, he was further honored with the 1994 Cramer Award for outstanding service, presented by Cramer Products in conjunction with the EATA. Gossett, a native of Indianapolis, attended Indiana State University, graduating in 1978. He joined the Columbia staff in August 1979, shortly after receiving his master’s degree from the University of Arizona. Jim and his wife Dianne, the former director of the Baker Athletics Complex, now manager of Columbia’s famed Nevis Laboratories, live in Ardsley, N.Y., with their 18-year old son, Bryant, who attends Hofstra.

CAT WADEStrength & Conditioning CoachCat Wade, a former soccer goalkeeper at Oklahoma who has previous experience at Houston and Syracuse, joined the Columbia staff in July 2009 as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. At Columbia, Wade will work primarily with fencing, golf, track sprinters and jumpers, archery, men’s swimming, lacrosse, vol-leyball, women’s tennis and field hockey. Wade comes to Morningside Heights after spending the past year at the University of Houston, where she worked primarily with the women’s swimming and track teams. At Houston, she worked alongside the 2008-09 Conference USA Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year in Mark Taylor. She also assisted with all the strength and conditioning aspects of the Houston football team’s pro-day training and assisted with the women’s basketball team’s strength program. Prior to joining the Houston staff, Wade spent three years as a graduate assistant at Syracuse, where she earned her Master’s degree in exercise science in June 2008.

At Syracuse, she worked in the strength and conditioning department, managing the women’s soccer strength and conditioning program and assist-ing with all aspects of the women’s basketball strength and conditioning program. Over three seasons, she also served as a graduate assistant with the women’s soccer team, training the goalkeepers while assisting in several other areas within the program. Wade also has experience working with Texas Select Volleyball, Athletic Evolution in Boston and Strength in Motion in Syracuse. She holds CSCS, CPR and SCCC certifications. A four-year starter in goal and two-time captain at Oklahoma, Wade is the Sooners’ record holder for goals against average, career saves, saves in a season and career shutouts. She graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

COLUMBIA CROSS COUNTRY/TRACK & FIELD

At the 2007 Penn Relays, Columbia’s 4x800m relay team of (L to R) Mike Mark, Liam Boylan-Pett, Erison Hurtault and Jonah Rathbun won the Championship of America race. It was the first time the Lions had won a title at the Relays since 1938, and it marked the first victory for an Ivy League institution at the prestigious event since 1974.

Erison Hurtalt ‘07CC, a two-time All-American, became the first athlete in Ivy League track and field history to win the Ivy League championship in one event - the 400 meters - all four years, both

indoors and outdoors. In 2008, he competed in the Bejing Olympics, running the 400m for Dominica, a Caribbean nation where both of his parents were born.

At the 2008 Ivy League Championships, Melissa Ikono ran a blistering 11.63 in the 100m dash, breaking the school record, meet record and league record. Ikono, one of the best short sprinters in

recent history, also holds school records in the indoor 60m dash and the outdoor 4x100m relay.

Caroline Bierbaum was named the recipient of the Honda Award in 2005, an award which is given to the nation’s most outstanding athlete in women’s cross country, according to results of national bal-loting among 1,000 NCAA member schools. In 2004, she became the first Columbia woman ever to win the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship in cross country, and in 2005, she won the title again, breaking a meet record that had stood for over two decades. She accepted her award from Carolyn

Schlie Femovich, Executive Director of the Patriot League.

All-American Delilah Dicrescenzo competed in Steeplechase at the 2008 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. The Chicago native completed the race in a time of 9:56.44, receiving one of six “wild-card”

berths into the finals. Dicrescenzo also finished fourth at the 2009 USA Cross Country Champion-ships earning a spot on USA Track & Field’s national team. DiCrescenzo was one of six women representing the USA at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan.

DiCrescenzo is one of only two athletes sponsored by Puma in the United States.

Sharay Hale ‘12CC is an Ivy League champion in the 400m. In 2009, Hale advanced to the NCAA National semifinals of the 400m, and ended the 2009 season as the fastest freshman in the nation. Her time of 52.64 at the 2009 NCAA East Regional was the fastest in the class of 2012, and the tenth fastest in the nation that year.

Osamuede Iyoha ‘08BC holds two program records in hurdles. In 2007, she set the 100m hurdles record outside, and in 2008,

she set the school record in the 60m indoor hurdles.

Caitlin Hickin ‘04CC is one of the most decorated runners in Columbia history. She was the first female cross country runner in Columbia’s history to recieve All-American honors, in 2001 and 2003. A six-time All-Ivy League selection, Hickin led the women’s cross country team to Ivy League Championships in

2002 and 2003. She also won six Varsity C awards in track and cross country, and was given the Connie S. Maniatty Outstand-

ing Senior Scholar- Athlete Award in 2004.

Erin Raggio set school records in both the indoor and the outdoor 800m.

Devon Martin ‘90CC holds the outdoor record for the 1500m. Named one of the 25 Most Infuential Athletics Alumnae in 2008,

Martin was Columbia’s first female runner to compete at the NCAA championships in Cross Country and Outdoor Track. A

two-time All Ivy League selection, Martin is a current World and American record holder for the 4x800m relay in the 35-39 age

group.

Michelle Kercado held both the indoor and outdoor records in the pole vault.

All-American Carman Ballard ‘08CC competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championships three times, and holds the

school record in the indoor mile run, with a time of 4:46.59.

Ben Johnson (above), the greatest short distance sprinter in Columbia history, ran 6.1 seconds for the semifinals of the

60-yard dash at Madison Square Garden in 1938. In the final, he was clocked at 6.0, but the officials denied Johnson the new time, because, according to an article written by Lew King, the

records committee would not believe that anyone could run that fast. He was credited with a time of 6.1. Johnson’s school record

in the 60 meter dash (6.80), set in 1939, has stood for almost seven decades.

ADMINISTRATION


Lee C. Bollinger was named President of Columbia University in June 2002. He is also on the faculty of Columbia’s Law School. From November 1996 to 2002, he was the President of the University of Michigan. He also served as Provost, and Professor of Government, at Dartmouth College from 1994 to 1996; and from 1987 to 1994 he was the Dean of the University of Michigan Law School.

A leading scholar on free speech and First Amendment issues, he is the author of numerous books, articles and essays on these subjects, and he teaches an undergraduate course, “Freedom of Speech and Press” at Columbia each year. Bollinger is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He is a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a trustee of the Kresge Foundation, and a Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company of Great Britain.

Bollinger was the named defendant in the twin Supreme Court cases—Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger (2003)—which respectively affirmed and clarified diversity as a compelling justification for affirmative action. For this leadership, he received the

National Humanitarian Award from the National Conference for Community and Justice and the National Equal Justice Award from the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He received the Clark Kerr Award, the highest award conferred by the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, for his service to higher education, especially on matters of freedom of speech and diversity.

Since graduating from the University of Oregon and Columbia Law School, where he was an Articles Editor of the Law Review, he has earned several honorary degrees. After serving as law clerk for Judge Wilfred Feinberg on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the Chief Justice Warren Burger on the United States Supreme Court, he joined the University of Michigan Law School faculty in 1973.

Bollinger was born in Santa Rosa, California, and raised there and in Baker, Oregon. He is married to artist Jean Magnano Bollinger, and they have two children.

DEBORA L. SPARPresident, Barnard CollegeDebora L. Spar was named President of Barnard College in June 2008. She is the Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration and has been Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Development at Harvard Business School. In one, she epitomizes the teacher-scholar model that is the linchpin of Barnard’s superb faculty. In the other, she has been a stellar administrator who has brought innovative leadership to governance issues. And despite the demands of both, she has also devoted herself to the concerns of social justice that are so important to our students; she has served as Chair of the Harvard University Committee on Human Rights and is the creator and Chair of Making Markets Work, a program to develop leaders in both the private and public sector in African nations.

As Senior Associate Dean, Professor Spar was responsible for distributing nearly $20 million in research funds by working closely with faculty on their project goals and demands. She instituted a fellowship that allows faculty

members to live abroad to work on international research, and a program that brings visiting scholars from other countries to Harvard. Professor Spar also developed a new policy on family leave and led the effort to develop a part-time tenure track.

Professor Spar has been awarded the Student Association Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching and often serves as an advisor for students on research projects. She is the author of dozens of the case studies that are used in Harvard Business School classes. These reflect her expertise in both international affairs and ethical issues, and include “The Pharmaceutical Industry Responds to AIDS,” “Union

Carbide’s Bhopal Plant,” and “Nike and International Labor Practices.” She frequently acts as a consultant for multinational corporations, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

Professor Spar has written four books and co-authored two. Her most recent, “The Baby Business,” was published in 2006 and explored

the economic, political and social issues surrounding reproductive technologies. She has appeared on 60 Minutes, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, ABC World News Tonight, and in many newspapers and magazines. Her own articles have appeared in publications ranging from The New England Journal of Medicine to Foreign Affairs to The Review of International Political Economy.

Professor Spar received her doctorate in government from Harvard; her thesis on international commodity cartels was published as a book in 1994. She is a 1984 graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She is married to Miltos Catomeris, an architect whose specialty is academic, institutional and corporate campuses. They are the parents of three children.

DR. M. DIANNE MURPHYDirector, Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education

Ivy League championships, including the first title in nine years for

men’s golf and the first in 31 years for baseball. To cap a memorable

year, Murphy was named the Football Championship Subdivision Administrator of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators.

In 2008-09, men’s golf and men’s tennis continued their excellence

within the Ivy League as the Lions won their second straight Ivy League title in men’s golf and the second league championship in three years in men’s tennis.

Murphy came to Columbia after six years as Director of Athletics and

Recreation at the University of Denver, where she led the Pioneers’ program from NCAA Division II to one of the nation’s top Division I athletics programs. Under Murphy’s leadership, eight Denver sport programs made NCAA tournament appearances and, on four occasions, Denver teams won a national title.In 2003-04, Denver enjoyed its best season when it won the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, placed third in the NCAA Skiing Championship, and advanced to NCAA tournaments in women’s soccer, women’s tennis, and men and women’s golf.

The scope of Denver’s athletics excellence was recognized

nationally through the United States Sports Academy’s Directors’ Cup, which recognized the best overall athletics programs in the nation, determined by an award of points based on teams’ finishes.

The University of Denver finished among the nation’s top third of

athletics programs in each of its six years since becoming a Division

I member in 1998-99. In 2004, the Pioneers set a University record when they finished 58th in the Directors’ Cup, in the top 20 percent

of all NCAA Division I schools.

Denver’s athletics program served as a model for national and regional academic, as well as athletics, excellence. The Pioneers

gained numerous academic honors, among them the Sun Belt Conference Graduation Rate Award, which it earned for five consecutive years. Prior to joining the University of Denver, Murphy served as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Cornell University from 1995 to 1998. When Columbia University President Lee C. Bollinger set out to hire a new athletics director in 2004, he knew he needed someone with the vision to attain national excellence and put

Columbia Athletics on par with the rest of the University, one of the greatest in the world. Five years later, there is little doubt that Dr. M. Dianne Murphy was the perfect fit for Columbia.

Now beginning her sixth full year as

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, Murphy has presided over the three most successful years in recent Columbia

Athletics history, including tangible improvements in football, men and women’s basketball, and a combined 11 Ivy League titles over the past three years – the most in any three-year span in school history.

Murphy has been Columbia University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education since November 2004. In five

years at the helm of the athletics program at Columbia, she has demonstrated the same passion and commitment to achieving excellence in intercollegiate athletics that has marked her entire

career as an athletics administrator.

She has overseen a number of initiatives aimed at transforming the experience of Columbia’s more than 800 student-athletes. She has

undertaken a complete strategic planning process aimed at short- and long-term excellence in athletics.

She has attracted several new high-level head coaches and administrators to the program, and spearheaded the creation of the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame, which had its inaugural ceremony on February 18, 2006. The second Athletics Hall of Fame class was inducted on October 2, 2008.

During the 2008-09 academic year, Murphy spearheaded the celebration of the Columbia-Barnard Athletic Consortium Silver Anniversary, honoring 25 years of women’s athletics

at Columbia. She also initiated the Leaders for Life program, designed to provide comprehensive leadership training to student-athlete representatives from all 29 of Columbia’s varsity sports programs.

In 2006-07, women’s golf won an Ivy League title in just its fourth season as a varsity program, and women’s soccer won its first-ever Ivy League crown. The All-

American Football Foundation recognized the success of the football program under Murphy, and, in March 2007, selected her as one of two recipients of the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award for excellence in

football.The Lions’ trend of success continued in 2007-08, when four Columbia teams won

and promotions, sports information and alumni and booster activities. She helped hire football and basketball coaches and was an advocate for the coaches. Cornell enhanced its equity initiatives and increased its fundraising revenues under her guidance.

From 1988 to 1995, she was the assistant

athletics director at The University of Iowa, serving as the university’s lead administrator for external activities. She worked on behalf

of Iowa’s coaches, and was effective in enhancing a strong compliance program.

Murphy began her athletics administrative career in 1987-88 as the assistant athletics director at Kentucky State University. From 1986 to 1988, she chaired the school’s Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, served as an associate professor and advised undergraduate students.

Prior to becoming an athletics administrator, Murphy coached basketball for 13 years. She was the head women’s basketball coach at Shorter College (1973-76), Florida State University (1976-79) and Eastern Kentucky University (1979-86).

Murphy was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Administrator of the Year in 2004. She chaired the NCAA Division I Basketball Issues Committee from 2002 to 2004 and currently is a member of the State Farm Wade Trophy Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Committee. She also served on the NCAA Certification and Diversity

Committee and the Board of Directors for the Women’s Collegiate Sports Awards, the organization that presents the Honda Award and the Honda-Broderick Cup.

She is active in several national organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the WBCA. She was named NACWAA’s Division I (Football Championship Subdivision) National Administrator of the Year for 2007-08 and served as NACWAA’s president during 2002-03. In 2004, NACDA honored her as the General Sports Turf West Athletic Director of the Year. The All-American Football Foundation has presented her with the Senior Sports Administrator Award.

At Columbia, she helped initiate the University’s Sports Management master’s degree program. She serves on the faculty as an instructor.

Murphy holds a Ph.D. in administration and curriculum from Florida State (1980), and master’s (1973) and bachelor’s (1972) degrees from Tennessee Technological University. The Tennessee Tech Alumni Association honored her with its 2005 Distinguished Alumna Award.

Florida State presented her with its ”Grad Made Good“ award at its 2005 Homecoming.

She lives in Manhattan, near the Columbia campus.
